I hated this book!!!! It's just about 2 kids and they wonder from place to place. This book is about Jack and Annie who go to the native times. It's not that interesting. But the series is that they just have to point to the book cover and say " I wish we could go there". Then the tree house teleports to the same place. There is a woman named Morgan who sends them there to find things like ( the four M's. Or 4 gifts). Then of course there going to find it and return home but....... when they come home time hasn't changed a bit. They go home and sleep. If you want to read the worst book ever in the world pick up this book today and you'll hate it. But if you want a good book then pick up " Magic Tree House #32" or anyother book in the "30's".

MY BOY LOVES READING IT.......2007-01-07

My 1st grader hates to put it down, he would rather read Magic Tree House books, than play video games. He even reads them to his class and explains the story for show and tell. In his kindergarten class the teacher would also let him read the Magic Tree House books out loud, not to give her a break, but to promote reading out loud. Great books!

Magic Treehouse books have been an excellent incentive for my 6 year old to read. At first I was reading them all to him, now he's reading them for himself. They are the perfect combination of adventure, education, and danger! This particular one is one of his favorites.

Would you ever want to be chased by a big buffalo? I read a book about two kids that did. It is called Buffalo Before Breakfast by Mary Pope Osborne. This book is about a boy named Jack, a girl named Annie and a dog named Teddy. They travel back in time. This story is also about the buffalo and Native Americans. This is a really cool book. One of my favorite parts is when they saw a huge heard of buffalo. I also liked this book because I am a child and I would like to travel back in time. In this book I think that the author wants to share what Native Americans used to do. You should read this book to see if Jack and Annie, along with Teddy, get back to their own time!

The story of a Polish-American family running a business at Sycamore and Herman Streets, Buffalo, NY in 1947. A brilliantly written record of time and place, describing the unprecedented cultural transformation of Post WW II America. Probably one of my 10 favorite books I've ever written.

I'm so glad to see this fine book back in print. I'd strongly recommend it to anyone with an interest in post WWII America, the contributions
of the working class, the decline in the industrial economy, the urban to suburban shift or anyone with an appreciation of what a thriving place Buffalo was in the post WWII period. Pick up a copy before it disappears from print again!
Klinkenborg does a masterful job of weaving all of these themes together and from this reader's standpoint it's as if he was there.

This is the best book ever written about Buffalo, the best book, fiction or nonfiction, that uses Buffalo as background. The decline of a proud city, enabled by its matter of fact certainty about destiny and greatness, is recounted with intelligence and a generous style. The sadness of change is inescapable, but people's memories, especially those of Polish Americans, create a light that still shines in the city's shadows.

I purchased the Magic Tree House audio set because my four-year-old daughter is always asking me to tell her stories. Sometimes, I just can't get my imagination going, so I thought this would fill in my blank moments. And, in fact, it has done a wonderful job of it. We play them in the car while driving around. They really captivate my daughter. The subject matter is very interesting to children: dinosaurs, mummies, castles, pirates. The stories increased her interest in these areas.

The CDs have also given me new ideas for stories--using the characters from Magic Tree House--and in other ways stimulated creative interaction between us. They have increased her vocabulary as well.

It is also a great way to motivate her to get in the car when we had to leave: "Come on, let's go hear a story!", I say.

I also love the fact that they are not the Disney-fied, commercialized versions of stories. I intend to purchase all of Osbourne's Magic Tree House CD sets.

My one comment toward improvement would be to put each story on its own CD. This set has four stories on 3 CDs, which is not quite as convenient when wanting to locate/isolate a particular story.

Basics for Time Travel.......2005-04-27

When I was eight I read these books. I am now 12 and in 6th grade and i say these books are great.I recomend these for kids instresed in science or the world.I am currenly reading Stephen Hawking's " A breif History of time" which is a great and understandable book for anyone. These books inspied me to be a Theoretical Quantum physicist. it got me into the fasinating subject of time travel and Unifeild Feild theory.The boottm line is these books are filles with adventure and fun.

Since I like scary stories, I really, really liked this one. The best part was when they heard a ghost playing the piano. The ghost's name is Lonesome Luke.

Fins Up for Dolphins at Daybreak.......2001-10-21

My name is Grant. I am in third grade. Last week I read DOLPHINS AT DAYBREAK because it looked like a really exciting book. DOLPHINS is my favorite Magic Treehouse book so far. I have already read VIKING SHIPS AT SUNRISE and CIVIL WAR ON SUNDAY. I would give all of the Magic Treehouse books I have read 5 stars, but I like DOLPHINS best because I love dolphins and the submarine adventure was really exciting!!!

Here's a bit of what happened: Annie was curious about the mini-submarine and talked Jack into exploring it. Inside the sub Annie pushed the wrong button and it started to go down to the bottom of the sea. They saw an Octopus, which started to grab the submarine...they also saw a hammerhead shark...

That's all I will tell you or it will spoil the story for you.

Night of the Ninjas.......2001-10-11

Night of the Ninjas is easy to read with short chapters and pictures. This book can hold the interest of children from 8 on up. The characters are fun and children can relate to them. The characters are a brother and sister, so this book will be of interest to either boys or girls. I have found that the Magic Tree House Books make children want to learn more about history.

The buffalo.......2006-10-24

Here's an excellent history of the buffalo on the North American continent, from its pre-historic migratory days (it roamed as far east as Virginia and the Carolinas) to the more recent efforts by conservationists to re-establish the herds in the Dakotas, Montana, and Canada. In short and well-focused chapters, Haines recounts the relationship between the buffalo and the Native Americans, especially the Plains Indians, who relied so much on the animal for food, shelter, and clothing. Haines explains how the Indians hunted the buffalo (methods included a circling concept where isolated animals were ganged up on by numerous members of the tribe at once and, of course, the buffalo jump, where animals were herded off steep precipices in droves to their deaths); he also shows how they prepared just about every part of the animal for either food or clothing. The overwhelmingly destructive forces of whites are also portrayed, especially where the railroads encroached on the land and towns were established. A few chapters wander off the subject a bit as Haines attempts to give a history of major western concerns - the chapters on the Santa Fe Trail, the Mountain Men, and the Oregon/California Trails have little to do with the buffalo. But all in all, this is an excellent, informative history of the buffalo and its role on the American scene. Recommended.

If you're looking for something beyond the usual royal biographies, or as a companion to UK history, this could be it.

Here's the lowdown on 1000 years of coronations stretching back to the crowning by St Dunstan of the Saxon King Edgar in Bath Abbey in 973 - which, incidentally, provided some of the words still used today - to the crowning of Queen Elizabeth II on 2 June 1953. Nice bite-sized nuggets, each monarch being handled individually. Coronations of noteworthy consorts are include e.g., Anne Boleyn.

It helps if you have a passing acquaintance with some of the history. But it's not essential. Hilliam places each individual coronation and monarch in context, in easily readable narrative. There's plenty of trivia, both familiar and non.

The content ranges from sumptuous to humorous - such as a splendidly-attired Piers Gaveston outraging envious fellow courtiers by carrying the St Edward crown at the coronation of his King and lover, Edward II; or Queen Victoria's Archbishop of Canterbury accidentally omitting a couple of pages and being forced by her to return to the beginning of the section. There are various one-page topical essays, e.g., one on the original King's Stone at Kingston, whereon crownings reputedly first occurred, and another on the Stone of Scone - now returned from Westminster Abbey to its native Scotland.

The appendices include a simplified, but useful, genealogy, plus the Form of the Coronation, and also a rundown of the regalia (i.e. crowns, sceptres, spurs - the lot, which may be seen in the Tower of London).

This is genial, informative, entertaining - and fun.

Not ideal for planning biomedical studies.......2006-08-20

I have found it very difficult to identify a good book on study design for the biomedical industry as most are too focused on engineering/manufacturing applications. Though this book does discuss many different study designs and their theoretical underpinnings well, it does not do a very good job of explaining the issues of sample size and power. These issues are critical to designing studies in biologic settings.

If one is planning experiments on animals, it is mandatory to design studies that minimize the number of animals required to answer the scientific question at hand--given pre-specified levels of statistical power and effect size. Similarly, when experiments are conducted on humans (i.e. clinical trials) it is important to include enough patients so that adequate precision is obtained. I wish this book discussed better how to find the appropriate number of replications required to optimize experimental conclusions (like the interactions terms in a factorial experiment, for instance).

Long-awaited update to a classic.......2005-10-17

This is the best applied book in any scientific or mathematical subject that I have ever read. The reviewers who are looking for equations and the typical assumptions-theory-proof presentation just picked up the wrong book.

If you're interested in applying experimental design to real-world problems, this book is indispensable. The authors help you get inside the math and really understand the important and often profound issues. It is easy to write a book that regurgitates equations and proofs; it is a major accomplishment to bring to bear decades of practical insights.

I still need to read the 2nd edition in detail and I plan to spend as much time as needed. Based on my brief reading of selected sections, the authors have retained the same style which has made their 1st edition a classic.

Not recommended as a text book.......2005-10-14

As a text book, this book will drive students crazy. Despite the typos which can be found not occasionally, I found the authors wrote most of the examples using large paragraphs but hard to comprehend.Pretty often the results they generated comes from nowhere. No clear deduction, some times even no equations, just tell you some meanlingless number. The authors must have treated students as experienced as they are, therefore they omit most of the important details for a student to follow. Obviously, by using computer software, they can easily get answers from problems they made without bothering write down how they can get it by pencil and paper.

My suggestion is that if ever you want to learn some statistics, get some books which are clearly written and well illustrated. This book is obviously overrated.

This edtion is full of typo and mistakes--much worse than the first edition.......2005-09-29

This book is supposed to be a great text book desigend for the course--EXPERIMENT DESIGN. However, after using it for the first 2 weeks, we found it is very obscure in telling the basic concepts and the examples are long but distractive. I have to read other books to learn the basic concepts to understand what this book is telling. My reference books are 'PROBABILITY AND STATISTCS FOR ENGINEERS AND SCIENTISTS', by Ronald E. Walpole 7th edtion and 'Probability, random variables and stochastic processes', by Athanasios Papoulis, 4th edtion.

What's more, this book is unique in that it has the most typos I have ever found in an textbook.

For example:

Chap 2. Problem 14. line 3 pp 65, the "probablilty shoulde be about 1 'change' in 500".

Chap3. Ex3.6 line3 pp84," the corresponding 'scabbed' t distributions".

Mistakes are almost in every chapters. When you read, you will found more, enjoy them.

A Great Book Updated.......2005-07-26

A classic updated. The first edition, written in 1978, has 8 ratings of 5 stars and one of 4 stars ("due to it's age") on Amazon.

As Six Sigma grew in popularity many more organizations discovered the power of design of experiments, as developed by Sir Ronald Fisher. George Box, was his student. He built on the ideas of Fisher and together with the other authors created a book that had already become the classic reference for designed experiments and how to apply statistics to improve results before the term "Six Sigma" was coined. The new edition retains the clear and friendly writing style of the original and adds some new tools to the experimenters toolbox (as mentioned in the publishers text above).

I am biased as my father was one of the 3 authors of the original book and the second edition is dedicated to him. Luckily, you don't have to take my word for it, many others regard this book as the primary resource for design of experiments.

Statistics for Experimenters is a tool that is used frequently (not a book gathering dust on the shelf) by many experimenters, engineers, Six Sigma experts and others as they use experiments to learn, innovate and improve.

Gertrude Cox and William Cochran were both famous statisticians who were extremely good writers. This was the book on experimental designs in 1958 with a wealth of information on randomized block, factorial and fractional factorial designs. It is still a very useful and practical reference. However it does not include the modern advance in robust designs that can be found in a text like the recent one by Wu and Hamada. Box, Hunter and Hunter "Statistics for Experimenters" is another excellent text on the classical and practical designs in engineering and agricultural experiments.

Any serious student of factorial experimental design techniques should definitely read this book. It has a level of detail and sufficient explanation to move any practionier's competence along to the next level.

This book, however, is a bit too technically oriented for the begineer.

An excellent primer for anyone going into behavioural science, or those clinicians who feel like doing some quality research. Barlow and Herson do an outstanding job of exploring the relatively complex area of n=1 research.

This book is a very well-written introduction to methods in psychological research. Goodwin's style is friendly and often humorous. The information he provides is interspersed with case studies, historical antecdotes, and other "real-world" examples of research principles being put into practice. I found the reading to go extremely fast and painlessly.

Goodwin covers such topics as the goals of scientific research, types of experimental research, the fundamentals of experimental design, ethics, subject sampling, types of measurement, assessing validity, and analysis of results. He does not go into great detail about statistics or computational analysis, as this is really meant to be a general introduction to methodology of designing research experiments.

Each chapter begins with an overview, so you have a sense of what to expect ahead. He also provides study questions at the end of every chapter which are very helpful to work through. They are in various forms: multiple choice, short answers, essays, etc. so you can practice describing the topics to be sure you understand the material. There is also a study guide published for this textbook, which I would recommend getting if only for additional practice.

Having a thorough grasp of research methods is critical for any student of psychology, and this book is probably required for many methods classes in universities. Luckily, it's a great textbook to use and makes research methodology interesting and enjoyable.
