    Book Description

This detailed encyclopedia is the first to explore the many peoples of early European civilization. Viewed as "barbarian" through the lens of ancient Greece and Rome, these civilizations were responsible for such accomplishments as the rise of farming in the Neolithic era and the building of Stonehenge. Coverage extends from prehistoric origins through the early Middle Ages (8000 B.C. to A.D. 1000) when tribal movements helped define the end of ancient culture and the rise of the modern European world. Arrange topically and chronologically Ancient Europe, 8000 B.C. to A.D. 1000 features include 200 illustrations (including the black & white images, color images, and line drawings); 70 maps; a chronology; index; two eight-page color inserts; cartographic endpapers; glossary of key archaeological terms and more.

Thanks to films like The Ten Commandments and The Prince of Egypt, Egyptian Pharaoh Ramesses II (1301-1235 B.C.) is forever seen by the Western world as a heartless, bloodthirsty tyrant who lorded over Hebrew slaves until he was bested by Moses. French scholar Bernadette Menu's small but detailed book sets the record straight about this much-maligned leader, who reigned for an astonishing 66 years as the absolute ruler of a domain stretching from the present-day Sudan to Syria and built great statues bearing his likeness, which continue to inspire awe. "He was blessed with exceptional longevity, was spouse and lover of the most beautiful women of his time, husband to four or five of his own daughters and father to some 100 children," Menu writes. "He was a pious ruler and bold general ... [and] an enthusiastic patron of art and architecture." Through artwork, masonry, and texts by Greek historians and Egyptian scribes who recorded his exploits--and through the research of modern Egyptologists--we discover Ramesses's early successes in foreign policy and diplomacy. There's also the marvel of his massive funeral temple, the Ramesseum, and his eternal resting place in the Valley of the Kings. Menu's exhaustive work and the numerous accompanying photographs illuminate the true character of a misunderstood giant of the ancient world. --Eugene Holley Jr.

        5 out of 5 stars A helpful little companion.......2002-10-19

The benefits of this series is that they provide a good amount of info for the casual reader, along with great illustrations and useful texts. I got this particular book on Ramesses for my mom who is reading the bestselling historical fiction about him. The illustrations alone are worth the price of the book -- often of the same caliber as those hideously expensive coffee table books. The text is fine, albeit brief... but again these books are primarily for general readers and great in that regard. This book would also be great for younger readers who have been struck by the "Indiana Jones" bug. Interested readers may also wish to check out the Cleopatra book from this same series, which deals with the last gasp of Egypt as an independent power.

5 out of 5 stars Great, concise, factual........2001-10-10

For all who love Egyptology, this little book is great. Very helpful, with lots of clear pictures. A delight!

4 out of 5 stars Value in a small volume.......2001-01-20

I bought this book after my trip to Egypt. What the other reviewers say is absolutely true- this is a thoroughly enjoyable, well-documented book about Ramses II, his accomplishments (real and self-aggrandized) and greater Egypt at the time, with historic detail that further illustrates the WHYs and HOWs of the Ramses phenomenon, and not pedantic at all. It is also copiously and beautifully illustrated. - So, how come the very low price and my four star rating (instead of five)? This book is about thin pocketbook or field-guide size, one of publisher Harry Abrams' "Discoveries" series, so the sumptious illustrations are quite small, and some eye strain may be necessary to grasp the detail. This book is light enough you can take it on your trip to Egypt. Buy it with the knowledge that this is not your coffee table souvenir book of your once-in-a-lifetime Egypt trip; full size would have earned it five stars plus in my book.

4 out of 5 stars Some Truth about Ramesses.......2000-08-16

Finally, a book which without being overbearing gives the reader a great overview of the amazing man known as Ramesses II! Well written and enjoyable to read, "Ramesses II, Greatest of the Pharaohs" is a beautifully illustrated guide to the life of one of history's most interesting men. I was very impressed with the attention paid to the gods and the impact they had on the kings of the 19th dynasty, as well as the listing of Ramesses known advisors, sons and wives. All in all, a very enjoyable book for those with an interest in Ramesses and Ancient Egypt.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent overview of the mighty King of Egypt.......2000-08-07

This is one in a series of books which overviews significant people and events in history. In this book the life and accomplishments of Ramesses II is chronicled and given in good detail. Not only is the book about Ramesses but attention is also give to what an average Egyptian's world was like during the reign of Ramesses II.

The pictures in here are outstanding from Abu Simbel to Piramesse and ultimately Ramesseum, his mortuary temple, the pictures are clear and the colors are excellent. Ramesses life is shown on temple walls, statues and other records. This was truely a great and powerful king. His empire was vast, yet he could govern it with an iron fist if need be. Ramesses's mummy is one of the most photographed mummy's of today, yet I wonder if given life, what he would say and it would be fascinating to listen to his life and accomplishments.

The Egyptian gods are also detailed here, as they were most important in an Egyptian's daily life, from Pharaoh to slave. Also given in the book, is the possible relationship between Moses (Egyptian word for Moses is "Mes") and Ramesses.

Overall, this is a fascinating read and highly recommended to all amatuer and professional Egyptologists.

We'd better get used to chaos because it certainly isn't going anywhere. Mathematician Ian Stewart--who is also a very talented writer--shares his insights into the history and nature of the highly complex in Does God Play Dice: The New Mathematics of Chaos. While his delightful phrasings will draw in nearly every reader, those with a strong aversion to figures and formulae should understand that it will be slow going. Chaos math suffuses everything from dreaming to the motion of the planets, and Stewart's words can never match the precision of his numbers. Persistence pays off, though; there are so many "aha" moments of insight herein that it almost qualifies as a religious text. The second edition has been partially revised in the wake of 1990s research, and three exciting new chapters report on prediction and other applications of chaos mathematics. --Rob Lightner

        Book Description

"You believe in a God who plays dice, and I in complete law and order." Albert Einstein The science of chaos is forcing scientists to rethink Einstein's fundamental assumptions regarding the way the universe behaves. Chaos theory has already shown that simple systems, obeying precise laws, can nevertheless act in a random manner. Perhaps God plays dice within a cosmic game of complete law and order. Does God Play Dice? reveals a strange universe in which nothing may be as it seems. Familiar geometrical shapes such as circles and ellipses give way to infinitely complex structures known as fractals, the fluttering of a butterfly's wings can change the weather, and the gravitational attraction of a creature in a distant galaxy can change the fate of the solar system.

This revised and updated edition includes three chapters on the prediction and control of chaotic systems. New information regarding the solar system and an account of complexity theory is also incorporated. It is a lucid and witty book which makes the complex mathematics of chaos accessible and entertaining.

4 out of 5 stars Great if you are new to the study of chaos.......2007-06-25

This is a good book for those who are either starting to learn about chaos and nonlinear dynamics or those who would just like an overall view of what the subject is about without getting bogged down into heavy-duty math. This book has two distinct themes. One is to explain the mathematical concept of chaos, and why it is both natural and inevitable. The other is to ask the rather long question "Does the mathematical model of chaos exist in the real world, and does it help us understand some of the things that we see?".

This book covers a variety of subjects that might at first seem unrelated - mathematical history, various chaotic models, weather patterns, applications - but by the end of the book everything comes together to give you a good overall view of the field. This second edition is mainly different from the first in the added three chapters on applications. These chapters cover prediction in chaotic systems, the control of chaotic systems, and then there is a speculative chapter that attempts to explain how the concept of chaos might lead to a new answer to Einstein's famous question which is also the title of this book.

This book requires more imagination and an ability to visualize than a talent for mathematics, and it makes a good introduction to more technical books on the subject such as "Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos" by Strogatz. Of course, that book requires much more in the way of mathematical maturity. This book looks more at the forest, the Strogatz book looks more at the trees.

        4 out of 5 stars A great intro to non-linear dynamics.......2006-03-26

I read and thoroughly enjoyed the first edition and purchased the second for the three new chapters. This book is a fun romp through the subject matter, just mathematical enough to get the gist wthout getting bogged down. I read this book for the overview of the subject and am now going through the Strogatz textbook for the details.
One thing to be aware of is that the original books published by Blackwell are preferable to the Penguin reprints. The Penguin books have *much* smaller text and figures.

5 out of 5 stars Stewart is a reliable guide to chaos.......2006-02-02

Although chaos was a hype some years ago, it still is relevant to many branches of the physical and mathematical sciences. For non-mathematicians, like myself, it is quite difficult to get some good, solid, reliable information about what chaos theory is all about. Ian Stewart is that source of reliable information, and if you want to know what chaos is about, read this book first.

Stewart's approach is down-to-earth, leaving all the mystical ideas about the interconnectedness of the universe, behind. However, that does not mean that his writing is dull in any way. On the contrary, one can feel Stewart's enthousiasm for the mathematical weirdness of chaotic systems on every page. And the informal language and many puns make it a delight to read this book.

Stewart describes how chaotic behavior was discovered in the late 1800s but was forgotten for nearly a century. He describes how mathematical chaos relates to chaotic features of the empirical world such as the butterfly effect (quite a difficult subject, but Stewart does a magnificant job here). And he points to some of the ramification of chaos for our thinking about the universe (determinism and all that stuff).

All in all - a book that will make you think about the world in a different way.

5 out of 5 stars Good tasting without indigestion.......2003-12-22

(1st edition '89) Stewart's book gives the reader as strong a flavor for the constructs of chaos as possible without formulas everywhere. The author makes great use of figures to depict ideas and even gives readers home-projects to test for themselves. Further reading is given (with difficulty levels indicated) for the brave-hearted. Unfortunately, the book is lacking as a reference due to it's vague table of contents and sparse index. But as compared to Mark Ward's "Beyond Chaos", Stewart gives the reader a deeper understanding of the subject matter. Overall good read.

5 out of 5 stars The best chaos for layman.......2002-06-05

This mesmerizing historical overview of nonlinear science, full of seedy ideas and fascinating expositions (from heartbeat to weather forecast) is well worth reading. One of those "aha !" books that will broaden your understanding of the universe (and the rest), it is very "visual" and..well, a friend of mine said she considered it a "mental thriller" since it touches on the great old questions of determinism and predictability. As for "mathematics" in the title- don't be put off. The book is virtually mathless.

        3 out of 5 stars A low level introduction.......2007-07-10

This book disappointed me - it is written at such a low technical level, with virtually no math. An opportunity squandered.

5 out of 5 stars A thorough explanation of chaos theory.......2004-04-24

The best mathematical models for many physical events rely on chaotic formulas and the number continues to grow rapidly. It now appears that some exposure to chaos and fractals will be a necessary component of the education of all future applied mathematicians. Given the simplicity of many of the equations, it can be strongly argued that chaos should be an early component of all mathematics education. Also, programming a computer to generate the images is very simple and a lot of fun.
To study chaos, you need a place to start, and this book will point you in the right direction and give you a brisk tail wind. The author, best known for his mathematics columns in Scientific American, writes with exceptional clarity. There are very few equations, as Stewart relies extensively on the verbal explanation. While computer generation is mentioned, only one very short BASIC program is given.
The material is pretty standard for introductory chaos and could serve as a textbook for a non-mathematical course in the subject. It would also be valuable reading for a course in the philosophy of science. Fairly extensive historical backgrounds are given for many of the initial discoveries.
If you have heard about chaos and want to know what all the excitement is about or are looking for reading material for a class you are teaching, this book is an excellent place to explore.

3 out of 5 stars Fighting religion with religion.......2000-06-27

This book is almost religious in its championing of Darwinian evolution. It is a shame that what are actually sound scientific points are presented with a religious fever that distracts or is even counter-productive in coverting open minded believers in creation.

        5 out of 5 stars Mind-Blowing Maths for kids!.......1999-11-26

Not being particularly mathematically minded, I found some sections of this book a bit of a struggle. Nonetheless, Stewart's somewhat disarming, slightly off-the-wall style of writing is very engaging, and on the whole the book is very readable. The implications of chaos will become clearer in the next decade or so I should imagine, so this book is timely and topical. A definite "must read".

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent non-mathematical introductory book.......1999-08-22

It was one of the first books on chaos I read before take more advanced papers and books, and it is very clarifying in the basic ideas of this new and amazing world. I strongly recomend it for beginers and science's lovers.

          Book Description

The purpose of this book is to give hope to those people who have cancer or a debilitating degenerative disease and to disseminate important information of an experimental treatment that is available today, a treatment that we believe is the most cutting-edge technology available in the world today and will be the basis of treatment of many diseases (now classed as incurable) in the future.

This is a true story of one man's struggle and triumph against a recurring malignant lymphoma.

My husband was diagnosed with his third recurrence in the stomach and bone marrow. He had a sub-total gastrectomy in 1992, radiation therapy in 2003 and chemotherapy in late 2004.

By July, 2005, he was losing weight, tired all the time, very pale and in extreme pain. The next treatment was going to be high-dose chemotherapy with a bone marrow transplant. Instead he had a purified, potentiated cord blood stem-cell treatment without any chemotherapy.

Four months later he is in great health:

he has gained 11 kilograms in weight
he does not have any pain
he has an abundance of energy
he is no longer pale and gaunt
he has muscles and is strong

In short, he does not have any symptoms of the cancer and has his quality of life back.

"We live in a society largely ignorant of both the aims and the limitations of science. On the one hand, we are subjected by the media to a caricature of science, which uses its authority to pronounce where its writ does not run. " Sir Robert Boyd, FRS, London University

                Does God Play Dice?
Ancient Greeks would not object to the idea that their minute universe is generally governed by chance, making the Gods play dice quite literally, by throwing dice in their temples, to explore the will of Gods. Romans followed suite, and Emperor Claudius even wrote a book on the art of winning at dice.
Questioning the probabilistic nature of the quantum theory, since random events are impossible to predict precisely, in view of Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle, Einstein comment on the pagan practice was, "I shall never believe that God plays dice with the world." In opposition to Einstein's comment, Stephen Hawking replied, "Not only does God play dice," adding, "but... He sometimes throws them where they cannot be seen!"

                Limits of Science:
Realizing the limited nature of science opens the gate to an understanding of God, which complements the scientific truth and gives life, love and peace. Schrodinger believed, like most great scientists that science has limits; it knows nothing of beauty and ugliness, goodness or evil, God and eternity. Toward the end of his career he made a statement, "I am very astonished that the scientific picture of the real world around me is very deficient. It gives us a lot of factual information, puts all of our experience in a magnificently consistent order but it is ghastly silent about all and sundry that is really near to our heart, that really matters to us."

                Science and Faith:
Science commands the truth, only in matters that can be objectified; while in the spiritual world, where goals, values, and purpose are located, science has little to add. It is a dry lean life that is restricted absolutely to the scientific standard of proven truth, where we are merely a colossal system of conscious atoms, but without meaning or purpose. "Only love has no limits. In contrast, our predictions can fail, our communication can fail, and our knowledge can fail. For our knowledge is patchwork, and our predictive power is limited. But when perfection comes, all patchwork will disappear.'' (1 Cor. 13:8-10)

                Scientific Theology Essays?
John Houghton, Oxford's professor of atmospheric physics, and director of the pioneering Meteorological office, agrees with Einstein that, "Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind." He instructs the reader on a search of modern scientific concepts of 'Space and Time', from the 'Big Bang' through 'A fifth dimension', in twelve enlightening lectures, in George Gamov engaging style and Asimov's clarity.
Houghton articulates scientific discoveries, homogenizes science and faith, with his approach to represent faith to the scientific academia as the binocular vision of God's two revelations. This is his own venue of the four attitudes currently held, and since are further developed by the 'Intelligent Design' believing scientists movement. The science pioneer introduces the reader to some of the most inspiring science books, which made popular such terms like; anthropic universe, dimensions of space, Doppler shift, entropy, quantum theory, man-machine interface, Newton rings, supernovae, utilizing clear visual graphics, in both photos and sketches.

                Science Apology of Faith:
It amazes me how could such a pioneer Science Catechist, preach faith with the advanced tools of scientific discoveries, while guarding his scientific objectivity and religious integrity, beyond the limits of Christian doctrine. He demonstrates highly scientific theology, recently advocated in Thomas Torrance writings. The author skillfully uses biographical notes of believing scientists, to make the narratives of his chapters personal, even with a photo of Faraday's cozy laboratory, that help him come to his smooth scientific access to faith. Still, he does not shy away from seeking the authority of Einstein, Hubble, Maxwell, Pauli and Scrodinger, while at the same time quoting Athanasius, Hilary of Poitiers, R. Neibuhr, St. Paul, Polkinghorne, and T. Torrance.

This is an account of how shear luck and personal fortitude can enable a person to survive and continue to learn and grow under the most horrendous conditions.

As with all holocaust stories, from the beginning one knows the outcome, which in this case is happy. The middle and necessarily horrible part is told forcefully, but with a degree of detachment which makes it bearable. The tone reminded me of Frank McCourt's in Angela's Ashes.

The story of how the author put together a very successful life afterwards is fascinating. She also has sympathy for those who were not able to cope with the aftermath, and has substantial insight on the effects of the experience on herself and on her family.

In summary, very well written and an important addition to the record being left by this generation. They must tell their stories so that it never happens again.
