5 out of 5 stars Great book for first-timer and DIY'er........2005-09-01

If you are attempting your first drywall project, haven't hung it in a long time, or want to know how to do it better, then this is the book for you.

Besides just hanging drywall, this book goes into:
    Selecting the drywall
Preparing the wall (masonry, wood, steel)
    Cutting holes
    Repairing damaged drywall
    Fixing popped nails and screws
    Soundproofing

Sure, if you are a professional installer you may find the book a bit trite, but the weekend warrior should find it very useful. The first paragraph in the book: "This book is written for the do-it-yourselfer who brings beginning to intermediate building skills to drywalling projects large and small." I think that says it all.

If you have never hung drywall before this book will have you doing your first project this weekend. I highly recommend it.

2 out of 5 stars Light on the art of drywalling..........2003-07-07

This is a great broad overview of the drywalling process. Lots of pictures of these two guys in blue and red. However, it doesn't tell me what I want to know, the art of getting two boards taped together. The taping chapter needs to be tripled in size.

3 out of 5 stars Good Overall Drywall Book.......2002-10-25

This book gives a good overall treatment of the drywall process. It covers tools, supplies, and techniques. However, a few of the layout drawings are hard to understand, particularly those on ceilings. It could also benefit from including more detail on topics such as finishing.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, very thorough.......2000-07-28

As someone who has had a little rudimentary drywall experience I found this book to be an excellent and thorough treatment of what is possible and how to do it. The illustrations are great, including photographs, structural drawings and drawings of workers in action. These drawings are especially well done and show you how to hold and use tools most efficiently in step-by-step procedures.

As you would expect, the book begins with tools and materials. The basic hand tools are described along with sophisticated professional equipment for drywall handling. Ways to efficiently and safely handle large sheets are shown. Drywall comes in a wide variety of types and sizes that are not "off the shelf" items at your lumber yard, but can be ordered. Here you will find out when and why you should use these specialty items that can be very advantageous in the right situation. Also covered are all the various fastening and corner treatment options and the advantages of each.

There is a detailed section on preparing walls and ceilings, including framing repairs or modifications that might be needed. This includes enhancements such as adding a niche and soundproofing. Preparation for drywalling over masonry and with steel framing is also covered. Then the techniques of measuring, cutting and hanging the drywall are presented. Special situations such as curved or irregular walls, stairways and arches are emphasized. This book shows you how to handle the difficult applications.

Drywall finishing, troubleshooting and repairs are also covered in detail, including a number of textured finishes that can be applied directly to the drywall. Many of these can be done using joint compound and they add an easy but sophisticated premium touch to your walls. Written with a personal touch, expert tips throughout and a "can-do" attitude, this is the book you need to get those walls up safely and securely.

    5 out of 5 stars A "must" for all do-it-yourself drywall installers!.......2000-03-04

Drywall: Pro Tips For Hanging And Finishing features more than 380 illustrations and color photos to guide the reader through any drywall project. Drywall provides information on tools, equipment, materials, and select chapters present step-by-step coverage on preparing walls and ceilings, and the importance of measuring correctly. Of special utility is the information on hanging drywall in tricky areas like stair and curved walls, and the chapter on troubleshooting and repairs. Ideal for the do-it-yourself home remodeler, Drywall is the only "how to" instruction and reference book that will be needed.

3 out of 5 stars Good reference but too detailed for most readers........2003-05-17

This book is a valuable reference, however, I think it is probably too detailed for most readers. If you're a warehouse manager or plant manager looking for information on improving your material handling and storage areas you may not appreciate having to wade through enormous amounts of technical specs and references to obscure material handling techniques just to find the information you needed. I'm not saying that this book does not have valuable information, only that it also has enormous amounts of information that you probably don't need. If you're a material handling engineer, you may want to have this on your shelf. But for the rest of us, try the book listed below.

The same author has another book "Warehouse Distribution & Operations Handbook" ISBN 0070440026 that is outstanding, and I would recommend buying it first.

    Book Description

A Handbook on Hanging is a Swiftian tribute to that unappreciated mainstay of civilization: the hangman. With barbed insouciance, Charles Duff writes not only of hanging but of electrocution, decapitations, and gassings; of innocent men executed and of executions botched; of the bloodlust of mobs and the shabby excuses of the great. This coruscating and, in contemporary America, very relevant polemic makes clear that whatever else capital punishment may be said to be--justice, vengeance, a deterrent--it is certainly killing.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Handbook on Humor about a Sordid Business.......2007-01-28

Charles Duff wrote a charming book on executions and in particular English hangman. This book is a feigned tribute on executioners and in particular English executioners. Mr. Duff is arguing against capital punishment, but he does so without the cant of political correctness. Anyone who enjoys good humor will appreciate this book.

Mr. Duff presents vivid details of the English hangmen's "art" and uses hunmorous anecdotes of their fine craft in dispatching malafactors. There are humorous examples of how the English hangmen used mathematics and careful study of the intended victims so that executions can be as painless and as quick as possible. Mr. Duff traces the improvements in public executions since Anglo-Saxon England and after the Conquest (1066). He comments on "Merrie Ole England" when the Tudors used hanging along with drawing-and-quartering which some of the English refer to as "The good old days."

Mr. Duff cites examples of State sponsored executions whereby the condemned was actually innocent, but the State or Crown had to have their "pound of flesh" regardless of errors in justice. Mr. Duff cites examples where "court experts" were either wrong or perjured themselves so that an execution could take place, the hangmen could maintain gainful employment.

Readers should note that at the turn of the 19th century (the 1800s), there were 210 offenses for which hanging was the punishment for the crime. These crimes included poaching on royal land, theft of five shillings (less than the value of a dollar), etc. Mr. Duff cites associating with gypsies as a capital offense, but he could not understand why associating with politicians was not included.

For sheer humor, Mr. Duff uses a hypothetical case of the owner of butcher shop who caught his wife having an affair with an employee. Mr. Duff's description of the blow-by-blow brawl is amusing to say the least. This amusing anecdote starts on page 92.

Mr. Duff also feigns and enterprising spirit when he suggested that film directors, television executives, media sponsors use their talents to publicly present executions to the fun and amusement of a population with morbid interests in such events.

Mr. Duff pretends to show the shock of unemployed executioners just because of botched executions which resulted in decapitation, prolonged suffering, etc. However, Mr. Duff uses the judges' instructions that the condemned be hanged until dead regardless of the time or suffering.

The one reviewer who wrote that he or she were appalled by this book either did not read it, or they have no sense of humor whatsoever. The idiotic comment the reviewer made that men like Mr. Cooper are disappearing is in incredible bad taste. The fact that such men have used humor to deal with tragedy is a sign that civilization is not dead.

Again, this book was written as feigned praise for executioners. Mr. Duff was opposed to capitial punishment which is often debated. This reviewer favors capital punishment in extreme cases, but Mr. Duff's book gives readers who can think and apprecaite humor something to ponder. While the book did not change this reviewer's mind, it sure made him think

4 out of 5 stars Let's hear it for diatribe in this case.......2002-11-16

I was delighted to find this obscure work of polemics on capital punishment throughout history and up to the (author's) present. Undertakes a diatribe on captial killing without the reactionary alarm on one hand and the sanctimonious philosphical, social, historical, and otherwise casuistic justifications of Foucault on the other. Actually quite useful when taken as an antidote for Foucault's overwrought "Discipline and Punish." Postmodernists who want to casuistically revel in the delights of capital punishment can go back to their Heavy Metal magazine and their coffee table Witkin.

Not exactly art in any sense, this is nevertheless one case where diatribe serves as a welcome comic relief against what is a grotesque side of civilization. There is nothing so sacred about capital killing that we can't poke a little fun at its excesses and abuses too. And for the yo yo reviewer below, let us know when you actually read the book and get near a review.

    1 out of 5 stars Mad as a hatter.......2002-06-20

Charles Duff was obviously an inteligent man, so why would he write such dribble. I felt the book could have been summed up in the first few pages, thank God there are few left in the world with beliefs like him.

    1 out of 5 stars Mad as a hatter.......2002-06-20

Charles Duff's was obviously an inteligent man so why would he write such dribble. I felt the book could have been summed up in the first few pages, thank God there are few left in the world with beliefs like him.

4 out of 5 stars Well, it's wry british humor against capital punishment.......2001-12-23

This is a great manual if you want to hang yourself; you know, amatuers simply strangle and suffocates to death, but that's not how the pros do it. The proper way to do it is to drop enough distance so that you break your neck, and then you don't want to drop TOO far because your neck would fall off (that's ugly, you know). To achieve this, a hangman has to know exactly how long the rope is, and how heavy the extra weight should be, and other huge knowledge base. In fact, it's more an art, because capital punishment doesn't do any good, no one's allowed to see it, it's stigmatized, and its there as an absolute pure art. Now, why don't we put more use to it? Why not make it into the nation's favorite TV show? If the court channel is so popular, imagine what a hit your Execution channel would be!

The book goes through all of this in your typical British Humor, and it's great. And if you are smart, you'd realize that this book is actually a book against capital punishment, backed with figures and facts. I myself is not against the death penalty, but the book does make you think. Great book.

Don'd read the preface by this whoever, though. It is boring and just plain stupid PC, and it makes you not want to read the book at all. It doesn't have any sense of humor, it tries to push the same ol' conclusions in a hastly manner, a real disgrace. Rip it out. Just go for the actual thing! If it hadn't been for this, I would have gave the book 5 stars.

                Book Description

This book aims to present a coherent exploration and review of both the principles and practice of MAV, as well as the research outcomes which support and illuminate practice. It is not a treatment manual, but it does present a foundation for understanding the principles and practice of MAV, both within specific medical specialties and generally in health promotion and disease prevention. The text reviews core aspects of pathogenesis and diagnosis in MAV, details daily and seasonal routines for disease prevention and describes purification therapies.

                1 out of 5 stars Not a useful text.......2006-06-25

This book is essentially a 163 page advertisement for the products and services marketed by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi (founder of Transcendental Meditation) and his organization. Though it provides a good introduction to the foundations of ayurveda (which can be found in scores of other books), this book provides almost no information for health professionals who wish to adopt ayurvedic methods into their practice, nor to laypersons who wish to use ayurvedic principles for better self care.

Although written by two MDs, Contemporary Ayurveda only serves to reinforce the notion that complementary and alternative approaches to medicine are the domain of hucksters and charlatans. Those with a sincere interest in ayurveda would do better with the books of Vasant Lad or Scott Gerson.

5 out of 5 stars Very good book, simple but very deep.......2003-07-21

This is one of the books that I used in the Diploma of Maharishi Vedic Approach to Heath that I did in Australia in 1998.
Amongs all the book that I read this is one of the best.
It is well written, simple (if you donno anything about ayurveda) but goes quiet in to dept.
                Very very good book.
I suggest it to everyone, from the person that never read anything about ayurveda to the person who already have some knowledge and whish to explore the purity and simplicity of Maharishi Ayurveda.

4 out of 5 stars Very good combination of practical & scientific.......2002-09-27

I bought this book on Amazon after it was recommended to me by a local medical doctor who is also trained in Ayurveda and incorporates Maharishi Ayuvedic practices in his clinic. I have been frustrated with the bulk of Aurvedic texts available on-line and in my city, which barely skim the surface of Ayurveda and certainly don't attempt to review the scientific literature on Ayurveda. I found this book to have a reasonably good coverage of the history of Ayurveda, a quite good presentation of the theoretical base of Ayurveda (though they perhaps go a bit over the top trying to link quantum physics to Ayurveda-- I myself am not trained in quantum physics, and I respectfully doubt the authors are...), and a good coverage of practical Ayurveda, with a liberal and much-appreciated sprinkling of well-documented references to the scentific literature on Ayurveda. Recommended for those who'd like to have a solid base on which to build their study of Ayurveda.

3 out of 5 stars good effort for Ayurveda.......2000-06-20

i was thinking that there is nothing to read about ayurveda through internet. no one site shows any hing about the oldest method to live healthy and balance therapy to treat the disased without harming as modern medicine does. i would like to suggest maharshi that there must name of aaurveda seperately on each search engine like YAHOO,MSN,NETSCAPE,AOL ANDetc. i am pleased with the effort.

                Book Description

For well over 30 years, Audrey Tournay has rescued and raised beaver kits. She successfully did what wildlife biologists told her was impossible: she reintroduced them to the wild.

Tournay is founder of the Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, where orphaned or injured moose, raccoons, ravens, skunks, foxes, fawns, woodchucks, muskrats, wolves, a lynx -- even a full-grown adult lioness -- have come into her care. Yet Tournay has a soft spot for beavers. That soft spot has occasionally been her bathroom, a makeshift den behind her woodstove, or on her lap. Her hands-on interaction with many beavers has given her a special understanding of these often misunderstood wetland animals.

These wonderful, moving and often very funny stories reveal life with one of North America's most intelligent, innovative, and inventive wild creatures.

                5 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2003-11-16

This is the story of one woman's crusade to save beavers. The writer runs the Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary in Ontario, Canada. It's a sanctuary that accepts all kinds of wildlife and nurses and nurtures them until most of them can be released back into the wild. But the writer has a special affinity for beavers and in addition to the regular work of nursing and nurturing she and individual beavers do a whole lot of education, especially in schools.

The writer is both literate and passionate about her subject. For many years she has been called upon to deal with the aftermath of human interaction with beavers. Farmers dynamite dams and she gets a phone call from a concerned observer "All the beavers seem to be dead except this one kit who is hurt/burned/starving. Can you help?" And so arrives Quibble, or Casey or Cassidy. One beaver at a time to be healed physically and emotionally as best a human can.

Transposed upon this "one at a time" are the facts and statistics: Canada was explored and developed in order to obtain beaver pelts. The beaver appears on the Canadian nickel not because it embodies the virtue of hard work but because it was once the back bone of the Canadian economy. And the writer points out that even now trappers in Canada "harvest" between 150,000 and 184,000 beaver pelts every year. (I'm Canadian, by the way, but it isn't just Canada that traps animals.) And these numbers don't count the number of beaver dams dynamited because they are inconvenient for farmers, home-owners and city planners.

The strength of this book lies in the juxtaposition of the mindless dreadful cruelty of mankind and the quiet humanity of rescuers and nurturers like the writer. (How can you fathom the mind of a reporter who turns up to do a story at the Wildlife Sanctuary wearing a beaver coat?) I loved this book. I laughed, I cried and I ended up angry and sleepless. Thank you Audrey Tournay and Boston Mills Press for a book I shall long remember.
