From the rise of Greece to the fall of Rome, this superbly illustrated volume is a wonderful account of the warriors and battles that dominated Europe and the Near East for more than 1,000 years. The story begins at Troy, drawing upon Homeric legend and modern archaeological evidence. It continues through Greece's Persian and Peloponnesian Wars, Alexander the Great, Rome's Punic Wars, Hannibal, Julius Caesar, and the barbarian invasions. Although John Warry's text is worth reading, the color drawings of uniforms, equipment, weapons, warships, siege engines, and more are the real highlight and make the chronicle extremely accessible. Warfare in the Classical World will excite both readers who have a mature interest in the period and, although it's not a kids' book, children becoming acquainted with ancient history for the first time.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent introduction to ancient warfare.......2007-05-13
This is an excellent introduction to ancient warfare. It is lavishly illustrated, and provides excellent diagrams to support some of the concepts such as how a phalanx of Greek infantry manoevered and then moved into combat. The book covers the technology of the times, but also looks at tactics and gives an overview of the politics that lead to the various conflicts. I would higly recommend this book for beginners in the field of ancient warfare such as myself. My only reservation, is that while the primarary authorities are extensively referenced in the text, I would have liked to see a bibliography (although the glossary is great too!) Highly recommended for beginners or those with a general interest in the topic.
Great Read.......2007-03-29
Loved the book. The sketches and battle tactics illustrated made them come alive for me. Gave me a much better insight into the whole thing. And the delivery was fast, even with free shipping.
The Best Resource Available on Ancient Warfare.......2007-02-09
As I researched the equipment and modes of Greek warfare while writing the historical novel "Maccabee," I consulted numerous excellent sources, but John Warry's book was without a doubt the best. It became my virtual bible for the staging of the battle sequences between the Jews in the Maccabean Revolt and their Syrian enemies who employed the Greek methods that had worked so well for Alexander the Great. Warry's explanations of military techniques in their historical context as well as the wealth of illustrations makes this a valuable resource for anyone interested in ancient warfare.
Must have if you are interested in ancient wars.......2006-12-08
I just got this for my son Shawn and I ended up reading it first. I am sure during this X'Mas both of us will want to fight for the book. The pictures and the drawings are of the highest qualities. I love the descriptions of major wars. I just wish that the author has given it more explanation of the drawings for the major battles like adding more legends. Also, it is kind of hard to read/understand the numbers and types of soldiers for both sides on the battlefield. But all in all, this is a great book that I suspect I will read and re-read many times.
All you wanted to know about Greek and Roman Military!.......2006-03-19
This volume contains details of battles, of famous strategic details that are hard to find in other books. There are pages on the uniforms and weaponry along with the organization of the entire armies of the times.
Great Book for the Military Buffs.

Useful Reference Work.......2007-01-19
This book is a useful reference work for anyone interested in ancient or military history. It is well written and highly entertaining. The book covers warfare from ancient Greece and Persia, through the world of Alexander, to that of the Roman Empire. Each chapter discusses the ancient sources upon which that chapter is based, the political situation of the time, weapons and tactics used, and some of the important battles of the period. The book is thus a good review of ancient history (but far from a detailed or comprehensive one) and a good review of the military history of the ancient world. There is a lot of information that is not readily available in other sources (such as the evolution of the Phalanx and the changing size of a Roman Legion.) Naval warfare is discussed as well as land warfare. My only criticism is a lack of any illustrative material of any kind. The book is also a little weak when it comes to the fall of the Roman Empire. (This period is covered, but not in as much detail as earlier epochs.)
A classic introduction to warfare in the Classical World.......2001-11-19
This is a wonderful book. It reads well and has superb illustrations of the fighting men and their weapons. It gives one a real feel of the era and the men who fought in them. It is also not too long and doesn't bore you with dry detail. Of course it is not as detailed as the serious studies on the eras such as Webster's and Bohec's studies of the Imperial Roman Army but then again it is not meant to be. It accomplishes what it sets out to do which is put you in the basic know on warfare in ancient Greece and Rome and also has much detail on their respective foes such as the Persians, Scythians, Gauls etc. However I still don't understand why it is termed an encyclopedia since it doesn't follow the standard alphabetical format (although an encyclopedia doesn't necessarily have to...I was just wondering?). Great book anyway and well worth the purchase. Peter Connelly's book "Greece and Rome at War" is also in the same vein but somehow I still prefer this one.
A well researched introduction to the period. Recommended........1995-09-25
A very well researched and clearly written account from
Homeric times to the fall of Rome. The text is consise
and excellently illustrated. Tactics and the political
background to military strategy are discussed in depth,
and pointers to original and secondary sources provided.
The sections on siege and naval warfare are particularly
good.

I found the text of this book to be too simple with very basic information but the photographs are great. It is suitable for those in grades 3-5. The simplicity of this book is compensated with the 60 step-by-step projects it includes which are a learning experience in themselves, quite easy to do and great for school projects. To list a few models one can make: Pyramid,Harpoon,Axe,Bow drill,Parthenon, Wooden Henge,Temple,Canoe and Boat. Other interesting projects include ancient food recipes, dyeing cloth, tiles mosaics, masks and clothing

A Historical Atlas of the Jewish People, edited by Eli Barnavi, is one of those rare books that can literally make a reader gasp with delight and horror. It may even be the best one-volume history of Judaism in print. Beginning with "The Migrations of the Patriarchs," and continuing to the present day, the book's chapters include historical maps, timelines, illustrations and photographs, and narrative essays by leading historians (such as Moshe Idel) that help readers not only understand but visualize the movements of the Jewish people. The editors have chosen not to structure the story as leading inexorably to the Holocaust and the rise of Israel, although both events are covered in some detail. Instead, they have depicted the rich variety of lives established by the Diaspora in such far-flung places as China and England, and have been equally attentive to the joys and triumphs of Jews, both in everyday life and in national cultures, as to the considerable tragedies Jews have endured. The text of this book is smart and readable, but the real joy of the atlas is its illustrations, many of which are rarely seen, such as 20th-century artist Abel Pann's depiction of the creation of Adam, "He breathed into his nostrils the breath of life." It's the kind of image that reminds you that life really is a gift, and makes you savor it. --Michael Joseph Gross
Book Description
The history of the Jews spans more than two millenia and encompasses most parts of the globe--an extraordinary saga which is set forth pictorially in this comprehensive, and richly illustrated and designed volume. With hundreds of brilliantly detailed maps, photographs, and drawings, and chronologies and commentaries by leading experts,
A Historical Atlas of the Jewish People is both an authoritative reference work and a sumptuous gift volume.
Customer Reviews:
This atlas succeeds beautifully.......2007-08-24
Few of the world's peoples can boast of a history as long and as varied as that of the Jews, or one encompassing such a range of achievements and tragedy. It spans more than three millennia and has touched most parts of the globe. This text sets forth this history graphically-in nearly a thousand detailed and accurate maps, brilliantly reproduced drawings, photographs, and paintings; plus chronologies and commentaries by dozens of leading experts. The result is a triumph of the bookmaking art-a comprehensive and dependable reference work.
Beyond the strictly historical, the Atlas also deals with many fascinating and important aspects of jewish culture-languages, literature, art, and music.
a great bar mitzvah gift.......2006-11-10
great information, nicely displayed. i wish i got one for my bar-mitzvah!
Excellent Overview of History and Culture.......2006-04-24
Professor Barnavi has done a great service both to Judaism and any students who are inclined to further their understanding of it. As a Christian proponent of this ancient faith upon which our own is based, I have found it an invaluable resource in my ecumenical studies involving history and development of Ancient and Modern Jewry and the vast knowledge accumulated over the thousands of years of its existance. It is a concise coverage of every age of its progression, along with a magnificent garnish of photographs and illustations which bring the entire process to life. I highly reccomend this book.
Heavily researched, beautifully depicted, fascinating and encyclopedic .......2006-01-20
This gorgeous coffee-table sized book would alone get my five stars for its detailed but clear maps and its breathtakingly diverse array of figures and illustrations depicting the major events of over 3,000 years of Jewish history. As it is, it provides detailed, well researched and very readable historical synopses of Jewish life throughout the world over this period, with each folio (two facing pages) a separate topic. Each folio includes the historical synopsis, usually a map, a series of other illustrations, including photographs, art, and other figures, and at the bottom of every page appears a time line highlighting important dates relevant to the topic. The topics range from the dawn of Judaism to present-day issues in Judaism, from Chinese Jews to the Jews of King Solomon's era, to Jewish farmers in Eastern Europe. You need to see this book in its entirety to believe it. If you ever wanted to an excellent and fascinating introduction to Jewish history, I don't think you can get better than this rare, colorful, scholarly and very engaging book. I'm so enthusiastic about it, I've bought it as a gift three times over.
An excellent, informative and beautiful work.......2005-09-19
This presentation of the history of the Jewish people through text, maps, charts, drawings, photographs, etc. is beautifully done. It is an excellent reference work for readers of all ages, a beautiful 'coffee table' book and a pleasure to use.

Kass asks the fundamental question "do we wish to live longer in order to live better, or do we wish to live better in order to live longer?" By going through the roots of medicine and the hippocratic oath, Kass shows what the healing arts are meant to be, and he exposes what the curing industry is rapidly becoming. Kass also takes an indepth look at science itself as it relates to research, ethics and the most basic levels of the human condition.

Book Description
Parks and reserves are on the front line in the campaign to conserve biodiversity on our planet. It is increasingly clear that these protected areas have limited future prospects without the cooperation and support of local people, especially in developing countries. Integrated Conservation and Development Projects (ICDPs) set out to reconcile park management with local needs and aspirations -- by emphasizing social and economic development among local communities -- and have managed to attract the lion's share of the funding for biodiversity. But so far the results have been disappointing. Important unanswered questions remain, and there is little consensus on when or where an ICDP approach to protected area management is appropriate and likely to be effective. Some conservationists argue that the ICDP focus on development dilutes biodiversity conservation goals, whereas others argue that the inward-looking protectionist alternative is doomed to failure.
As the struggle to balance conservation and development continues, the need to evaluate what works and what doesn't becomes increasingly important. This book draws on the lessons from the ICDP experience to inform the next generation of biodiversity conservation programs, including those concerned with the alleviation of poverty as well as those working at landscape scale. The contributors explore the theoretical and practical challenges to better inform conservationists and decision makers of the role that conservation and development approaches can and should play in conserving biodiversity.

Book Description
"If 'in adversity is hidden opportunity' then lurking around the corner must be the Mother of All Great Chances." With our environment on its knees, our great myths and cities crumbling, Ferenc Mate argues in this passionate, darkly funny book that now is the time to begin our lives anew, on a more human scale. With our lust for mechanized "progress" we have damaged and endangered not only our planet but also our communities, families, and even friendships. He warns that our environmental movement by itself is as effective as "trying to stop a freight-train with a feather." He argues for fundamental change--by each of us. We must place simple human needs and the human spirit far ahead of material wealth. We must rethink our concepts of career, home life, habits, and what we call security and success. And we must resurrect our foundations: the small town, the family, and a dignified caring self. Only then will our earth become the paradise we once had and mistakenly took for granted.

Helped me in my quest to be a better human being...........2007-04-18
If you are a spoiled rotten, overfed, overspent American like I was, you have to read this book! It is truly life-changing. I want to buy a copy for everyone I know and make them read it. Those who do not like the message are just afraid to change. It will take drastic measures to get us out of the mess that we are in, I think this should be required reading for all of us. Excellent!
A reasonable argument.......2007-02-21
I had mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand, the writing is excellent and the author has some good ideas. On the other hand, he has a lot of complaints about the U.S. and his main solution seems to be that everyone should just get rid of their cars, pack up and move to the country, not realizing that there are many who cannot afford to do that. What about people like me who make $728/month working for one of our "great" public schools that also happens to be 10 miles away from where I live, with no public transportation, and therefore requiring the use of a car? What about people with disabilities who may not be able to get around without a car? I also noticed the author was born in Hungary, has lived all over the world, and now lives in Tuscany, while at the same time using the words "we", "our", "us" (referring to Americans) throughout the book. I would have given the book 4 stars because the writing and ideas are really good, but I just couldn't get past the fact that this was a foreigner telling "us" what "we" should be doing, while living in the Promised Land of Tuscany. And even though he had some excellent ideas for change, I think he's living in fantasy land, because most of these changes probably will never take place.
Read it, then read it again.......2005-12-13
I bought this book at a used bookstore - I feel sorry for the person that gave this gem up. This book is one that will have you questioning everything material that is in your life - and just how important it is to you. I love the book because you don't have to read it (the chapters) in order. Pick out one that interests you and read it - every chapter is an eye-opener.
WE NEED THIS BOOK MORE NOW THAN EVER.......2004-11-04
Today, the day after the election, I took this book off the shelf to read again. This country might be on fast slide down to disaster and I want to be reminded about what I can do to live a reasonable life. There is no stopping the slide now, it's out of control as proven by the election outcome. We have to hope to live through it. I love this book even though I know everyone can't move to the country (or to Italy, as Ferenc did) but we can do our best to live less a consumer and more a reasonable
life wherever we are.
my future existence.......2004-09-22
Recently read this book, and I look forward to early retirement (as soon as my last child is educated). My husband and I plan to move to remote British Columbia, Canada and 'drop off the grid'. I am a Canadian (in the US for 8 years), and I can't wait to go home to a more 'calm' existence. This country is too fast, too extreme, too money driven! People act and react before they think. I am now married to an American and he wants to move to Canada as well. This book well describes how society has 'gone off the deep end' with everything. The world have 'over-engineered' every aspect of human existence. I feel anyone who doubts the way society is heading would benefit from reading this book. I loved it.

Strategic Environmental Assessment: A Sourcebook & Reference Guide to International Experience
ASIN: 1844074536 |
Book Description
Strategic environmental assessment (SEA) is a fast growing and rapidly evolving professional field driven by both advances in theory and method and by regulatory requirements in Europe, North America, Australasia, South Africa and increasingly across Asia. However, to date, analysis of existing practice and associated reporting has remained far from systematic and there has been a clear need for a comprehensive textbook to facilitate teaching, learning and practice in this burgeoning field.
This textbook, the first of its kind, provides for a state-of-the-art review of SEA theory and practice and promotes a more systematic approach to SEA. It is written for a wide student, professional and academic audience and aims particularly at supporting the development of SEA modules in undergraduate and postgraduate planning, environmental assessment, engineering and law courses. It provides an overview of the fundamental principles and rules of SEA, reports systematically on international SEA practice and theory and pushes the envelope by developing the theory. Supporting material includes boxed examples and case studies from around the world, extra reading suggestions and a glossary of terms.
This is the essential book for all students, professionals and academics in strategic environmental assessment and environmental impact assessment and follow-up world-wide.

Book Description
Increasingly, national parks have come under environmental attack from sources outside the parks, beyond the jurisdiction of the Park Service. Smog from neighboring cities now obscures famous vistas. Noise and water pollution from nearby industries spills across park boundaries. Acid rain eats away at old-growth forests.
John Freemuth sees these new external assaults as political problems. In this volume he examines the questions they raise, traces the shifts in government action that have accompanied waves of citizen activism, and uncovers evidence of ineffective legislation, inept implementation, and the potent political power of pro-development forces. He finds the Park Service hamstrung by unclear, conflicting priorities and bureaucratic inertia imposed from above. Finally, he analyzes a diverse set of political strategies that have been and are being used to deal with the threats to our national parks, evaluating each in terms of environmental effectiveness and political feasibility.
This book is part of the Development of Western Resources series.
