In a collection of 30 articles, Unsolved Mysteries of American History takes some of the most notable quandaries of the American past and tries to offer some solid answers, or at least alternate explanations. Paul Aron takes on the serious ("Why did Truman drop the bomb?") as well as the frivolous ("Did Babe Ruth call his shot?"). The book is written to entertain, but Aron provides a bibliography for further reading at the end of each essay, and steers readers to heavier tomes if they wish to dig deeper into the various subjects.

A FACT FILLED EASY TO READ TRIP THROUGH HISTORY.......2007-04-28
I'm not a huge history fan, but on a whim I decided to check out Paul Aron's Unsolved Mysteries of American History. I was most interested in the theories surrounding the Disappearance of the Roanoke Colony. However, before long I found myself immersed in everything from: Did Babe Ruth Call His Shot to Was Amelia Earhart a Spy to Who was to Blame for Pearl Harbor. All in all 30 different US mysteries are covered over a timeframe of centuries.
The nice thing about this book is that Mr. Aron doesn't just give you "an answer". He has clearly researched all of these topics and looked at each question from numerous points of view. All of his research is cited and allows the reader to continue on their interest in any topic. The other nice approach to this book is that each question is covered in 5-8 pages. It's an easy book to pick up and read when you have a few spare minutes to fill.
I felt like I learned some new information and I was entertained. What more could you ask for in a book?
Provides great summaries of mysterious turning points in our past.......2006-08-29
Great, short book. Very fun reading. Aron provides both the traditionalist and revisionist viewpoints on mysteries discussed. It's refreshing because he's neither an in-your-face revisionist conspiracy theorist, nor a staunch traditionalist. At least, if he resides in one camp or the other, he provides unbiased essays on many unanswered questions throughout our history. The book really makes one want to dig into the evidence and explore the mysteries further. He discusses the Rosenberg trial, Kennedy's assasination, Lincoln's assasination, The conquest of the Aztecs, Norse Vinland, and many other interesting topics. Several references are provided at the end of each chapter, which help catapult further reading on particular topics of interest. Overall, this is a great, concise book.
Well-Balanced and Entertaining Analyses.......2006-05-26
In 30 chapters, the author poses 30 questions, one per chapter, pertaining to unsolved issues in American history. In each case, the available information is presented and analyzed. Radically different views are each given their due consideration. Then, the author finishes the chapter with his well-balanced conclusions about the most likely answer to the question initially posed. Each chapter is followed by a list of references, along with the author's comments on most of them. The book is well-written and in a very engaging style. All this, combined with the odd tongue-in-cheek choice of words in appropriate places, makes this book a most entertaining and informative read. I recommend it to anyone with a fascination for real-life mysteries.
Fact Or Fiction Is Hard to Prove in These Cases........2005-08-29
These are selected from the book as some of the mysteries which appealed to me the most:
Benedit Arnold had been a hero of the Revolution, credited with courage under fire. He and Ethan Allan had a joint command at Fort Ticonderoga in May, 1775, in New York. He used his positions to futher his moneymaking schemes. He was known as a greedy profiteer (had a craving for money) who had no ethics whatsoever. He was not chivalrous when it came to the opposite sex. He was almost court-martialed.
His name became synonymous for 'traitor,' as he was negotiating with the British 'to turn traitor' long before it was thought. His commanding officer did not like him, left his name out of an official report; he was constantly at odds with other revolutionary leaders. More facts can be found in Clare Brandt's 1994 THE MAN IN THE MIRROR.
In 1806, Meriweather Lewis (aged 32) was a national hero. He and Clark had just returned from their epic journey across the continent at the orders of Jefferson, a former neighbor of Lewis in Virginia. Three years later, at 35, he was shot twice in a boarding cabin on the Natchez trace in Middle Tennessee (Maury County), a place called Grinder's Inn.
James Neelly accompanied him from Memphis on his way to Washington, D.C. Neelly was left behind on October 9, 1809, but his servants were still with Lewis when he died. It was a coverup by Clark who wanted all of the credit for what they had discovered out West. Lewis' money was gone (robbed). Both Neelly and Grinder were lying about the events which had transpired.
Many historians concluded that Lewis could not have killed himself. By temperament, he was a fighter, not a quitter. There were a lot of "perhap"s and no definite evidence that he killed himself. That's why it's called Grinder's Switch to this day: birthplace of Minnie Pearl. Read David L. Chandler's 1994 THE JEFFERSON CONSPIRACIES but do not depend on UNDAUNTED COURAGE by Ambrose as his opinions could not be trusted. He wrote the modern type of history with much use of his own imagination.
David Greenglass gave Harry Gold a crude drawing of part of a plutonium-fired implosion device from the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos, New Mexico near Albuquerque. Greenglass, brother of Ethel Rosenberg, falsely accused them as a court deal to get out of being imprisoned. He signed his own sister's death warrant with his lies. There was no evidence at all that she had participated in any spying even though she had a very close relationship with Julius. They were the parents of two little boys.
She was the scapegoat in 1951, executed in SingSing Prison --similar to the way Mary Sarratt was hanged for something she did not do in 1865. FRAMING HISTORY (1993) is interesting as a work of criticism but not history.
Paul Aron followed up with MORE UNSOLVED MYSTERIES OF AMERICAN HISTORY, and wrote DID BABE RUTH CALL HIS SHOT, UNSOLVED MYSTERIES OF BASEBALL.
Great book! Must read for casual history buffs........2005-08-04
Paul Aron's book is a very good one. He tackles many questions and answers them succinctly. It's an enjoyable book.

This book has to be one of the best primary source collections for the field of Medical Anthropology. Illustrates many of the themes running through the heart of the field fabulously, although it could have been organized better. Highly recommended.

A splendidly rich set of reflections on living with pai.......1998-06-17
This is an extraordinary book, serious and varied and passionate; I recommend it to anyone who has encountered pain, and would be happy if all doctors had to read it in medical school. It argues that modern society no longer has any effective ways of coping with suffering - especially chronic pain -, of finding meaning in it, and explores some of the ways people in the past learned to live with - and learn from - pain, pain understood not as an enemy attack on human lives which ought to be pain-free, but as a part of life which must be lived with and which can be meaningful in itself, not just a deprivation of meaning.
Book Description
A comprehensive survey of the therapeutic, historical, and cultural uses of cannabis in traditions around the world.
⢠The most complete visual record of cannabis culture ever published.
⢠Christian Ratsch is one of the world's foremost ethnopharmacologists and is the current president of the German Society for Ethnomedicine.
Marijuana Medicine explores the role of hemp in medicinal systems spanning the globe. Cannabis has accompanied the development of human culture from its very beginnings and can be found in the healing traditions of cultures throughout Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Even today it is an important part of many Asian healing traditions: in Ayurveda cannabis is praised for its tonic and aphrodisiac qualities and in traditional Chinese medicine it is cited as a superb antidepressant. It also remains a significant part of the healing and visionary traditions of Latin American curanderos and Brazilian, Nepalese, and Indian folk medicine. Modern research has confirmed the effectiveness of marijuana's application in treating such diseases as asthma and glaucoma. Christian Ratsch profiles the medicinal, historical, and cultural uses of cannabis in each of these societies and medical systems, providing remedies and recipes for those interested in how cannabis can be used to treat specific conditions.Â
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating ethnobotany.......2004-02-07
This fascinating book considers the role of cannabis or hemp as medicine in a multitude of cultures from around the world. The author looks at the historical role and medicinal and cultural uses of hemp in these societies.
The introduction deals with botany, taxonomy, chemistry and pharmacology and also looks at the literature and research, providing an impressive bibliography.
Some of the interesting chapters include information on shamanism in Nepal, hemp in the Chinese herbal arts, Vijaya in Ayurvedic medicine, Bhanga in Indian and Nepalese folk medicine and the use of the plant in Africa and the Americas.
Each chapter includes recipes and remedies that contain hemp from these traditions for various disease conditions. The plant has a long history as herbal medicine with a multitude of applications.
The author discusses the German saint, seeress and musician Hildegard von Bingen and German medieval medicine, and provides one of her hemp containing remedies for stomachache. The role of hemp in Alchemy, Rastafarianism and Homeopathy is also investigated.
A list of diseases which hemp is used to treat is provided, from abdominal pains to wounds, whilst the bibliography includes books, articles, periodicals, multimedia and website addresses.
The text is enhanced by black and white illustrations whilst the beautiful full colour plates include botanical illustrations, photographs, paintings, album covers, T-shirts and buttons. There is also an impressive painting by Alex Grey of the hemp goddess.
The book includes a glossary of terms and concludes with an index. Every chapter has its own bibliography. This is a valuable reference and source book and provides a spellbinding read.

Book Description
A compulsively readable explorer’s journal of the hidden territory of pain, as profound and insightful as the work of Oliver Sacks and Sherwin Nuland.
A bee sting on the lips was the tiny lance that set Marni Jackson off on a four-year exploration of the many ways in which we suffer. Exiled for an afternoon in the country called pain, she realized that no one had the words to describe her condition although it was as familiar as a headache. A fusion of emotion, nerve and memory, pain inspired only questions.
“Why do we still distinguish between mental pain and physical pain,” she asks, “when pain is always an emotional experience? Why is pain so poorly understood, especially in a century of self-scrutiny? Hasn’t anyone noticed the embarrassing fact that science is about to clone a human being but still can’t cure the pain of a bad back?” North Americans spend $24 billion a year on pain relief while chronic pain is on the rise. If pain is the reason why most people visit the doctor, why are most doctors so bad at addressing the problem of suffering?
Pain: The Fifth Vital Sign dives back into the history of pain and forward into the possibilities of pain genetics, bringing us stories of both people in pain and the pain pioneers: eccentrics and artists, wrestlers and writers, ministers and mothers, psychologists and philosophers, nurses and doctors. Marni Jackson has created a definitive, heartfelt, funny and beguiling portrait of a condition we can’t live with — and can’t live without.
Customer Reviews:
An encouraging, comforting sort of book.......2003-03-12
I read this book and felt so encouraged. I have suffered with debilitating chronic pain for more than 4 years. Marni Jackson knows what those of us who suffer are going through. This book is a real page-turner for those interested in this ambiguous subject. Pain is such a vague, subjective experience and the author points this out through stories and anecdotes. Her witticisms and practical insights are true gems. I felt less alone in the world of chronic pain after reading this book. If you need a little encouragement, or know someone who does, please read this book. It is well worth the investment!

Largely just copies of academic journal articles.......1999-03-05
Text contains several typos that will lead to creating complete poison (at best) or certain death of the chemist (at worst.) The entire "book" consists mainly of articles copied straight out of journal articles. The legal procedures are outdated, the information inaccurate, and generally inapplicable to anyone with more than just a benign curiosity in the subject material.
A largely irrelevant, outdated "underground" publication..........1999-03-05
One of the first and most famous of the "underground" publications dealing with clandestine synthesis of LSD, et al. Largely journal entries that have been copied over verbatim from journal articles. Legal information is extremely outdated and many "recipes" contain dangerous typos a la the Anarchist's Cookbook that will most likely lead to failure of synthesis or death of the chemist if actually attempted.

Customer Reviews:
The THC book.......2003-12-23
If you want to know about THC then this is the book to get about just that. Be warned! This is heavy on the chemistry and is mostly devoted to that science and so if you do not know much about chemistry then you may only get the benefits from the sections on processing and potency.
Cannabinoids and more cannabinoids..........2003-12-12
If you like science and chemistry and cannabis then this is the book for you. It is everything about cannabinoids (the main psychoactive ingredients in cannabis). This is an excellent resourse for the chemistry minded cannabis lover.
Good scientific review.......2002-03-18
This book uses data collected from the pre-Reagan ban on marijuana studies to make good informed conclusions about cannabis. It dips into most everything but I wanted more genetic information.
An excellent resource........1999-10-11
Fully descriptive in the biochemistry of the cannibinoids, including the environmental conditions leading to degradation of THC to CBD and CBN. Also details procedures of organic syntheses of compounds.
Very comprehensive and informative!.......1999-01-15
This is a treatise that extends beyond the normal boundaries of cannabis growing allowing the novice and veteran alike a new and innovative approach. It's multitude of High quality tables and graphs cuts across all boundaries and then some. Comes highly recommended to the newbie and veteran alike, no matter whether or not you're a newbie or veteran!

A new poet for new generation.......2006-10-19
Albert Gibbs seems to be a young poet who can help define his generations search for love, life, and culture. His brief poems are a small glipse into his soul, but don't let the length of the book fool you, every page is more meaningful and deep than the last. I highly recommend this book to anyone who desires to learn more about themselves and is on the same quest young Albert gives us in Observations.
Poems for real women .......2006-09-20
"A real woman" is my favorite poem. In this book you'll find great observations on love, pain, life, and culture. Albert proves he truly is the observer. Women if you want conversational love poems this is the book for you. The words may come from a young man but they are laced with ripe age old wisdom regarding relationships. He asks the questions with humor, addresses the culture with courage and shares the lessons of forgiveness. He opens his heart and displays his "Regrets" which is an admirable piece given it's honesty. If you've ever been hazed I'm certain you'll appreciate "Haze me" and if you've been on the poetry scene and have had enough of your share of sex poems then "More then just another pussy eating poem," is a must read. Thanks Albert for giving us "real women" so much more indeed.
I can relate.......2006-04-06
The book observation is not only one that provokes thought, but also one that you can relate to. It's good to see a young black man express himself. It's also reassuring to know that others have gone through similar experiences that you have. If you like poetry, you will love this book...very well written!
Reading this book is time well spent!.......2006-04-02
While reading this book, you must throw yourself headfirst into Albert Gibb's poetic journey. "Observations" is like one of those chocolates nestled in brown paper cups -- a exceptional poetic confection that melts in your hand, your mouth and your head! It's time well spent. This is a highly recommended read.
Must Have.......2006-04-02
Observations explores the depths of love, pain, life and culture relating it to everyday experiences. This book indulges the imagination and every poem is a climax to the next. It is definitely one of those books that you can read through once and revisit it over and over again! It's realistic content is a must have on your book shelf.
