I would like to attract your attention to the online polls that Time Magazine did before issuing this book. In these polls, in two different categories (one of them is Leaders & Revolutionaries), the voters chose Ataturk who is not only the founder of Turkish Republic but also an idol for all countries that had been living as colonies of industrialized countries. Another inconsistency about this mistake is that Time Magazine declared that The Foundation of Turkish Republic (October 23, 1923) is one of the biggest days of "80 Days that changed the world" (another collector's edition book). They selected this event as that much important but did not add it in this book. It is incomprehensible.

2 out of 5 stars Not Very Enlightening.......2002-09-14

When I first obtained this book, I expected more and was, to say the least, disappointed on many levels. Perhaps a bit more inclusion, perhaps a bit more insight, and perhaps a bit more reasoning as to why these people are "The Most Influential People of the 20th Century would have made this a better book because, in some ways, the book is semi-informative. Still, the book, with its inclusion of the mainstream "notables" that don't have the power to bring controversy to the table, leaves many figures in the shadows that should have been, could have been, and perhaps were in many - except the Time Book's staff - people's minds, the most influential people in the 20th century.
The List, in case you're a fan and want to read some 3-4 page blurbs on these individuals, is broken into two categories:
(1) Leaders and Revolutionaries: Theodore Roosevelt, Lenin, Margaret Sanger, F.D. Roosevelt, Hitler, Churchill, E. Roosevelt, Gandhi, David Ben-Gurion, Mao Zedong, Ho Chi Minh, M. L. K. , Pope J.P. II, M. Thatcher, Ayatollah Puhollah Khomeini, R. Reagan, Lee Walesa, Gorbachev, N. Mandela, and The Unknown Rebel.

(2) Artists and Entertainers: Picasso, Corbusier, Graham, Chanel, James Joyce, T.S. Eliot, C. Chaplin, Spielberg, M. Brando, Igor Stravinsky, L. Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, Rodgers and Hammerstein, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin, Lucille Ball, Jim Henson, Oprah, and Bart Simpson.

As you can tell, this list is a bit lacking and, in many cases, a few pages doesn't do the person it covers justice. Still, if you like little snippets that candycoat the past by glossing over the transgressions of the those in favor and casting stones at those who aren't, then you may, somehow, find this book more enlightening than I did.

A truly exceptional, insightful, brilliantly written and presented commentary on the key figures of the last century. Perhaps slightly biased towards Uncle Sam, but still a book to treasure for yourself and your children (to be!)

Book Description

For more than a thousand years before the arrival of the Slavs in the sixth century AD, the lands between the Adriatic and the river Danube, now Yugoslavia and Albania, were the home of the peoples known to the ancient world as Illyrians. This book, now available in paperback, draws upon the considerable archaeological evidence that has become available since the Second World War to provide an account of the origins, culture, history and legacy of the Illyrians.John Wilkes describes the geography of Illyria and surveys the region in the prehistoric, Greek, Roman and medieval periods. He discusses Illyrian art, material, culture, religion and customs. A chapter examines the Illyrian language, of which little trace survives, and its connection with other Indo-European languages. Professor Wilkes also scrutinizes the linguistic evidence for the Illyrians' relatedness to other peoples - Thracian, Italic, Greek and Celtic. He concludes with a discussion of a possible survival of an Illyrian native culture in the Roman and Byzantine periods.

2 out of 5 stars Nice Cover- but where is DEA?.......2005-12-02

Ok let me start with this.Shouldn't the head of "DEA" be on the cover of the book lol. That is the most famous Illyrian statue in Albania.

Well...since there's not that many books in English about Illyrians, no wonder we are obligated to read whatever book that has Illyria or Illyrians on the tittle, thinking... maybe it will be usefull. It's not the case with this book though... Who said there's little known of Illyrians? Have u ever gone to Albania? Ever visited tenths of ancient museums dedicated to Illyrians? We didn't just made them up lol. Have u ever heard of a sllav called Ilir or Teuta or Agron? lol Shoot! The author just forgott to mention that if there is a reason sllavics wanna be known as "Illyrians" is just to prove the Europe, that they're just as old as the rest of it is (U won't understand why that's so important, if you're not europian).
Anyway...if this author was so serious about Illyrians, he shouldnt have started his book with such a phrase as "...they spoke a language of which almost no trace has survived"
He should have known that different from the Bosnians, Serbians,Macedonians, etc whose languige is that of slavic, Albanians of TODAY do have a very unique language that is not spoken or related to any other language in the world today. Is one of the only seven languages in the world to do so. There is no doubt, Albanian language is so uniqe because has its origins in Illyrian language.

The reason why the Illyrian history is overshadowed, is because they lived between 3 great empires that constantly tried to "be" the world, while Illyrians and Albanians are known of, never occupying another territory, unless is for defense.

As the desctruction of Romans,Greeks and Macedonians was not enough, the Turkish empire destroied everything it could, while building NOTHIN', not even a freakin' mosque (in Albania). This didn't happen in Greece or Italy, at least not at this level.

If I'm coming up as a fanatic-patriotic-person lol I'm sorry, that's the last thing I wanna come up as. I just wanna see a work done properly. In my country writing a book doesn't mean dollars, means responsibility and importance. You can't write history or talk about other countries based in your beliefs, history is FACTS and facts are all over Balkan, which the author should have visited and lived in, before sendin his work for print.
Albanians are never known for SHOW-OFFS thats why we don't really care about sllavics or greek theories. We know who we are, it's them that desperately for centuries have tried to be us.
Such a shame!

1 out of 5 stars arber.......2005-05-17

this book shows how people still try to erase albania from the map. my name is arber which was also the name of tribe who lived near "durrahchium" today's durres , i have two uncles whose names are ilir, my aunt's name is teuta, my two best friend's name are agron and genti, we didn't just started to use this names, this names have servived in our life from illyrians like most of our folk dances. for example the war dance, were two warriors dance holding swords to the sound of drums, or the dance were man and women hold eachothers hand and dance in circles. as you should know illyrians were not a unified body of people who spoke the same language but with different dialects, like in albania today, and in some cases they loked different. they were discribed as tall blueeyed which you can see in northern albanians and kosovars today, also short with dark hair like the albanians in the south, but they were the same people, with the same culture. the writter of this book should've done more research in the servivng illyrians today "shqiptaret". this book was propably influenced by antialbanians who have tried to erase albania from the map for thousands of years. let me tell you one thing is never going to happen, we will stay were we have allways been in our illyrian land.
if someone wants read about illyrians, read alexander stipckeviche's book which was written by a sllav himself, who has seen the truth.

1 out of 5 stars Amateur work - UT Austin.......2005-03-25

This book leaves much to desire in terms of scientific research. It drastically deviates from the established theories on the origin of Illyrians, a people inhabiting the Balkan Peninsula in the Roman times. Unlike some of the previous reviewers, I am not going to be concerned as much with his refusal to endorse the Albanians as the descendants of the Illyrians, but more with his methods of arriving to conclusions without much serious historical or scientific work. Not the most serious work on the Illyrians.

5 out of 5 stars the foremost LIVING authority on the Illyrians.......2005-03-11

Wilkes is the foremost LIVING authority on the Illyrians. His is the LATEST comprehensive work on the Illyrian people. In his book, "The Illyrians", John Wilkes states on pg: 219:

"NOT MUCH RELIANCE SHOULD PERHAPS BE PLACED ON ATTEMPTS TO IDENTIFY AN ILLYRIAN ANTHROPOLOGICAL TYPE AS SHORT AND DARK SKINNED SIMMILAR TO MODERN ALBANIANS."

Wilkes has been proven CORRECT by science when the Human Genome Project's Y-chromosome study of European populations, confirmed that the vast majority of contemporary Albanians do not share an Illyrian or any Indo-European linneage - they are mostly a pre-IE Mediterranean population.

John Wilkes correctly puts Illyrian descendants among contemporary ex-Yugoslavs, centered around Montenegro and Bosnia and branching out into Dalmatia and south-western Serbia. Wilkes hints that ex-Yugoslavs are slavicized Illyrians and he leans on C.S Coon who insists that Albanians are of mixed Slavic, Thracian, Turkish, Armenoid and Illyrian origin.

This work was published in 1991 and based on the newest excavations undertaken in ex-Illyria. Wilkes brings out plenty of the most recent archaeological and anthropological evidence which other's in his field did not have access to.

Ten years after he published this work, the Human Genome Project's Y-chromosome study proved him correct. Modern science has dealt a huge blow to Albanian attempts to usurpe the Illyrian legacy. He was a decade ahead of his time. Because of his work, many academics within Albania have also come out in favour of accepting the new findings; namely: Kaplan Resuli, Fatos Lubonja, Ardian Qosi and Ardian Vebiu. They are joined by many international critics of the now debunked Albanian-Illyrian theory: Paul, Hirt, Weigand, Tomashek, Georgiev, Pushcariu and many others.

Read this book. Keep in mind that it is based on evidence older works did not have access to and keep in mind that science has proven Wilkes correct ten years after he published this long-overdue honest and objective, thorough analysis of the legacy of one of Europe's oldest civilizations. The Albanians can no longer unjustly monopolise a whole people as they have done in the past.

I would just like to add to the previus reviews by directing my words to the author, please dont write a book by getting information on the internet about it or maybe reading some serbian propaganda. You have to understand that illyrians are albanian ancestors and as my friend mentioned in his review please go to Albania, Kosova or anywhere were albanians live and use to live and you will get a better idea of it.
I can fill this whole review with facts that link albanians to illyrians, but I fill like it is a waste of time cause a person like you seems to have no real passion for writing books, it seem like you are doing it for material reasons.
I, myself would be more than happy to take you to the Illyrian lands and have you meet Illyrian nation(albanians).

Well i would like to close my review by telling people that are considering to by this book that it is a big waste of time and very missleading.

If you like to read about Illyrians for whatever reason it might be who would know how to write better that illyrians themselves.

Book Description

It's 1872, and adventurous Vesper Holly and her guardian set out for the tiny country of Illyria, on a quest for its legendary treasure. But once Vesper and Brinnie arrive, they are plunged into a fierce struggle between rebel forces— and someone is out to kill the two of them! If anyone can triumph over those kind of odds, it's Vesper — one of Lloyd Alexander's most intrepid (and best-selling) heroines. "A story that moves at breakneck speed and is filled with delicious details Alexander is to be commended for his elegant writing, astute characterizations, and his presentation of an intelligent heroine." — Booklist, starred review "With its wonderfully exaggerated characters, tantalizing chapter endings, literate style, and witty repartee, the book must have been almost as much fun to write as it is to read." — The Horn Book

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Bland and forgettable.......2006-07-01

This is a poor and forgettable book. It introduces us to young and newly orphaned Vesper Holly. Upon learning that her adventurer father has died, her reaction is along the lines of "jolly good, let's have some tea." (In the story she is from Philadelphia, but she's written like she's English, hence the tea. Sorry to any English people out there, but I'm not owning this sociopath as American.) I think that this was supposed to be spunky, but that isn't how it comes off. The same flat cruelty and lack of care for other people runs through the story. It is broken by occasional sentences in which Vepser expresses saddness about the caste system in Illyria and is disturbed that one of the Illyrians she meets, Nilo, may be killed in civil war.

On to the plot... ...Vesper convinces her newly designated guardian (our narrator) to accompany her to the land of Illyria to continue her father's research and try to find an army of magical warriors from an Illyrian legend which her father had believed truly existed. She meets the Zentan (Illyrian upper caste) king, and they discuss the caste system in Illyria. She is then off to do archaeological research with some help from her Illyrian (Illyrian lower caste) guide, Nilo. Together they uncover mystery and subterfuge and discover the secret of the magical army of legend, all while remaining completely two dimensional and unsympathetic.

The underlying mystery of an ancient secret that could hold the key to uniting castes in the present, or driving them further apart if things didn't work out, wasn't bad. Had there been, say, some character development, this book might have been able to ride on that. As it is the characters are badly written, the plot is bland and doesn't hold together, and there is no redemption from elsewhere, like stellar prose or something. This book is not worth the paper it is printed on. A child who was extremely into the genre might be OK reading this, but their parents and peers aren't going to find anything.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite teen adventure series.......2006-06-25

I'm 21, and I must say I love the Vesper Holly books as much as I did when I first discovered them at age 10. I read them over and over again through my teen years. They're like a cross between Indiana Jones and the Adventures of Tintin, with an added bonus--an original female heroine! As a young girl I admired Vesper and all her intelligence and pluck; she's a great role model for smart, ambitious girls who want to make discoveries. These books are funny, intelligent, and genuinely exciting. They are honest, lighthearted, goodhearted fun. I was delighted to discover that Lloyd Alexander has recently written a series finale (Xanadu Adventure). They're at a young adult reading level (good for ages 9-16) but are also great books for reading out loud with kids from ages 7 to 107.

Vesper, with a heart as big as her brain and her endearing knacks for mathematics, historical puzzles, and banjo music is a truly trailbrazing heroine in young adult literature. (Keeping track of her numerous and various admirers and enemies, and bumbling along with her humorous guardian, Brinnie, is fun, too!)

Thank you, thank you, Lloyd Alexander!

3 out of 5 stars A Romp Through Illyria!.......2006-01-25

Readers may already know veteran author Lloyd Alexander, especially his Prydain and Westmark fantasy titles. Not as many are familiar with Alexander's indomitable red-haired heroine, Vesper Holly. The Illyrian Adventure is the first of a series of books featuring this plucky young woman and her guardian Uncle, affectionately called Brinnie. This book is a delightful romp, a sort of young readers' Indiana Jones without the snakes.

Vesper Holly is a young lady who is determined to clear her late father's name and discover the secret of Illyria's greatest legend. To do so, she enlists the help of her resourceful uncle and leads them off into the Illyrian countryside where they will face assassins, betrayals, rebellions and impending war. To Holly, this is all simply part of the marvelous excitement of her adventure. Nothing sets her back or leaves her daunted, and she will lead the rest of the characters by the ears if necessary to accomplish her goals. The overall impression is charming, but a bit on the thin side. At only 132 pages, it's not so surprising that the book has less development than some of Alexander's more extensive works. Still, the book lacks the flavor of originality. Evil royal viziers and noble rebels are a bit too stereotyped for me to be completely forgiving. The keen young heroine, her more staid guardian and wild adventures across the globe smacks more of serial writing than strong story crafting. The serial quality can be seen in the number of Vesper Holly adventures that exist, although many may be out of print currently.

I've nothing against a good serial, but I do want readers who might have read other Alexander works to be aware of the nature of these stories. There's also a level of unreality to the world of Vesper Holly. While the perils are frequent, the threats seldom feel that dangerous-none of the main characters ever seems seriously hurt for long. Still, the adventure can make for some exciting reading and can be perfect for the young reader who hasn't cracked longer books yet. Children who are fresh from the Magic Tree House series or The Secrets of Droon may be just the audience for Vesper Holly. The books are not particularly scary, there is no gore and there is nothing in the way of sexual innuendo. While violence is necessarily part of the adventure, it is kept at a comfortable distance.

I can only give this particular book three stars, as I have read better stories by this author. But I do think the book is a delightful lightweight read for the right audience. It's vivid and charming and an easy read. For those who enjoy Vesper's story, she's got several more! The sequel to this one is The Eldorado Adventure. For those who may be looking for other adventure tales, I also recommend The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, about mutiny, murder and betrayal on the high seas.
Happy Reading! ^_^ Shanshad

2 out of 5 stars It is an ok book.......2004-02-17

I did not like The Illyrian Adventure because I didn't like because the main character. Vesper is a know it all. She can speak five different languages and can figure clues out before anyone else. Her arm was cut and she didn't even worry about it. Someone was stalking them and Vesper knew how to get out of it. She just wasn't believable.

The Illyrian Adventure is about a girl whose Dad died. He was an archaeologist. His daughter, Vesper, and her guardian went to Illyria. When they got there they met King Osman. He gave them permission to go through Illyria and finish what her father had started, to find the treasure. On the trip someone was following them. They found someone to help in their adventure. Find out if Vesper and her Guardian find the treasure by reading the Illyrian Adventure.

I would recommend it to anyone who likes adventure and mystery. I would recommend it to anyone eleven to thirteen.

4 out of 5 stars A Female Indiana Jones.......2003-08-08

I've been a Lloyd Alexander fan for a long time. His Westmark Trilogy and Prydain Chronicles are certainly some of my favorities for their high adventure, dry wit, and extraordinary depth. I've even exchanged letters with Alexander. Needless to say, I've been excited to begin the Vesper Holly books for a long times, and while this one is not quite up to the level of Westmark and Prydain, I am not disappointed.

Vesper Holly is quite a girl. She has a knack for getting into finding trouble and adventure. In this novel, she drags her Uncle Brinnie to Illyria and into a civil war with its roots in ancient mythology. Together, Vesper and Brinnie have to try to unite the country by bringing together the king and the leader of the rebel forces. Of course, the plot contains a lot of murder attempts and quick escapes and mysterious plot twists. It's certainly a fun, fast ride.

There is a lot that's great about this book. I'm always a stickler for good high adventure, and the humor, action, and characters of The Illyrian Adventure provide that. The only problem with the book is that it stops there. Where Prydain and Westmark have underlying messages about such things as political philosophy, the nature of heroism, and the ability of love to cut through the chaos of the world, this book did not have that depth. Certainly, read this book, but read Westmark and Prydain first.

                    Book Description

What would kill you if you fell into a black hole? Once people finally get to Mars, how will they get back? What makes the holes in Swiss cheese? Are there any carnivorous plants that are harmful to humans? Are there really caterpillars that scream to protect themselves? How do birds have sexual intercourse? Why don’t woodpeckers damage their brains? What is the function of ear wax? Why don’t you sneeze when you’re asleep? Do germs have germs? What is considered evidence for extra-terrestial intelligence?

Every week, C. Claiborne Ray answers questions like these from the readers of the New York Times Science section who, as this delightful second volume demonstrates, never seem to run out of things to ask about. Here, Ray gives us 225 of the most interesting answers she has gleaned from scientists in every discipline, satisfying our desire to understand some of the strangest, most curious mysteries of the natural world. Victoria Roberts’s charmingly wacky drawings add to the fun.
