    Book Description

The work of top scholars in Visigothic studies... Using all evidence available, the volume addresses the evolution of the Visigoths in early medieval history. CHOICE Indispensable for all scholars of the Visigoths. ENGLISH HISTORICAL REVIEW Books on the Visigoths and Visigothic Spain in English are rare, so this is a welcome addition to their ranks... wide-ranging collection (which) has much to offer, not just to Spanish studies but to students of late antiquity in general. CLASSICAL REVIEW Between 376 and 476 the Roman Empire in western Europe was dismantled by aggressive outsiders, `barbarians' as the Romans labelled them. Chief among these were the Visigoths, a new force of previously separate Gothic and other groups from south-west France, initially settled by the Romans but subsequently, from the middle of the fifth century, achieving total independence from the failing Roman Empire, and extending their power from the Loire to the Straits of Gibraltar. These studies draw on literary and archaeological evidence to address important questions thrown up by the history of the Visigoths and of the kingdom they generated: the historical processes which led to their initial creation; the emergence of the Visigothic kingdom in the fifth century; and the government, society, culture and economy of the `mature' kingdom of the sixth and seventh centuries. A valuable feature of the collection, reflecting the switch of the centre of the Visigothic kingdom from France to Spain from the beginning of the sixth century, is the inclusion, in English, of current Spanish scholarship. This first hand account comprised of journal entries with commentary is a fascinating read and provides tremendous detail of Capt. Cook's voyages. I think that for the general reader with an interest in Cook I would recommend Hough's biography as a primary source with this volume as a supplementary text. The two together will provide an excellent view of the accomplishments and adventures of Cook and his crews.

              Book Description

Why is science so credible? Usual answers center on scientists' objective methods or their powerful instruments. In his new book, Thomas Gieryn argues that a better explanation for the cultural authority of science lies downstream, when scientific claims leave laboratories and enter courtrooms, boardrooms, and living rooms. On such occasions, we use "maps" to decide who to believe—cultural maps demarcating "science" from pseudoscience, ideology, faith, or nonsense.

Gieryn looks at episodes of boundary-work: Was phrenology good science? How about cold fusion? Is social science really scientific? Is organic farming? After centuries of disputes like these, Gieryn finds no stable criteria that absolutely distinguish science from non-science. Science remains a pliable cultural space, flexibly reshaped to claim credibility for some beliefs while denying it to others. In a timely epilogue, Gieryn finds this same controversy at the heart of the raging "science wars."

3 out of 5 stars Dual possible purposes make part of book worthwhile.......2001-07-08

Gieryn's stated purpose in this book is to show how the notions of what science is like are flexible and changing, and provides several case studies where the "boundaries of science" were supposedly at issue. These case studies are developed in a meticulous and careful manner. Nevertheless the case studies are never substantially interpreted to illustrate the book's thesis. No attempt is made to compare the approach of one view at a given time with another to speak of; merely the two sides (at best) are presented. For example, his presentation of the phrenology disputes in the 19th century focus *merely* on social factors (as one might expect from a sociologist) - however, that cannot by itself explain the boundaries involved without showing other factors (epistemic, etc.) were NOT relevant to whatever degree. This said, the cases are presented quite well and clearly as far as they go.

Also, it should be noted that the epilogue where Gieryn discusses his take on the so called "Science War" is riddled with inaccuracies. For example: he accuses the philosopher Mario Bunge of saying that feminists should be excluded from science. This is complete nonsense - as anyone who reads his remarks in context will see. (Bunge was merely denouncing what could be called "radical feminists" who claim quantification is masculine, and so on: Sandra Harding, etc. The article in question makes this clear.)

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating analysis of the cultural authority of science........2000-01-05

In modern cultures, science holds undisputed tenure over the adjudication of knowledge and pseudo-knowledge. Given its epistemological authority, it would seem that the demarcation of the scientific domain from less credible areas of knowledge would follow a universally defined set of criteria. Not so, says Thomas Gieryn in "Cultural Boundaries of Science." To be sure, Gieryn investigates several "credibility contests" wherein precise boundaries of science are needed. In one particular case, for example, "scientific knowledge [was] empirical when contrasted with the metaphysics of religion, but it [was] theoretically abstract when contrasted with the commonsense, hands-on observations of mechanicians."(63) His subsequent case studies are meticulously researched and his arguments cogently made.

But Gieryn is no postmodern critic of the objectivity of knowledge, nor does he reduce its value to paradigmatic contingencies (a la Kuhn). He is a sociologist, not a philosopher, and is concerned only with the "cultural cartography" of science. And in this context, he has come to see concepts such as empirical, rational, and even science function "not as a set of rules for proper fact-construction, but as rhetorical tools deployed in the pursuit or defense of epistemic authority, or in efforts to deny legitimacy to rival claims."(362)

                    Book Description

In appealing prose and watercolor illustrations, this book retells the true story of Jasper, an aging beagle that belongs to a couple who buy a fishing camp in the Maine woods. After unsuccessful attempts to make friends with a variety of forest animals, Jasper and his owners meet a crippled whitetail doe that makes their camp her home. The deer and dog become inseparable and spend many seasons together at the water’s edge, the doe often bringing her fawns to meet her longtime friend.

Another heart-warming, educational and beautifully illustrated book from the multi-talented Dean Bennett.

There's also the sub-text of preserving the Allagash, the beauty of which Dr. Bennett has documented in previous work.

We were the owners of Jasper, the old beagle dog in this book. Jasper led a very unusual and wonderful life for a dog. Mr. Bennett has captured the essence of Jasper' life in an excellent way, with his illustrations being very life-like. Jasper's relationship with Sweetie, his friend in the forest, was exactly as Mr. Bennett told in the story. Excellent illustrations and great true story. We thank Mr. Bennett for allowing Jasper's (and Sweeties) story to be told to, hopefully, many many children, as well as adults. Long-term Forest Dynamics Plots (FDPs) allow ecologists to explain patterns in diversity and dynamics in tropical forests around the world. In this collection, Elizabeth Losos and Egbert Giles Leigh Jr. assemble extensive standardized data—collected here in one location for the first time—from sixteen tropical FDPs and synthesize the findings, putting these unique and valuable plots in a global context by highlighting the utility of the collected data for conservation and forest management.

Written by experts in the field of tropical ecology, Tropical Forest Diversity and Dynamism will appeal to students and professionals with an interest in community ecology and patterns of diversity.

                            Book Description

Finding the Forest is a series of vignetes that offer a different vision of the forest. This vision challenges many of today's assumptions about trees, preservation and forestry practices.

This short book is a series of forestry essays on a wide range of topics. The author is a professional forester and has a practical bent to forestry. It is more of an idea book rather than a specific how-to volume. I especially liked the essay on the red pine monoculture plantation.

Peter's stories reflect a personal evolution of thought about forests and forestry. The episodic events are weaved into a colorful anthology of tales that are easy reading but can be deeply thought provoking. There's a solid base of practical stewardship philosophy that many forest owners would do well to consider. Lessons that have been learned and shared demonstrate a balance between people and nature that is more down-to-earth and applicable than most "nature-writers." The experiences delightfully illustrate a love of forest management tempered by the realities of natural processes. In this age of frequent conflict over natural resource issues, often single-use issues, this book offers a well-written respite that gently explores the quiet process of learning and living with the forest. "Finding the Forest" fits well into the forest landscape. It is simply written and expresses a wealth of unpretentious wisdom.

5 out of 5 stars Important and enjoyable essays on forests........1999-08-27

I read "Finding The Forest" from my personal perspective of having forged a long driveway through our forest, often following hints of old logging roads - having built a home in the woods and watched as the second-growth forest matured around me. I have planted hundreds of trees in near-by fallow fields and gazed with awe and longing at huge white pine stumps found throughout the area. The forest is part of my home and a major part of my photographic travels.

What I discovered in "Finding the Forest" was an affirmation of common feelings, and the guiding hand of an expert offering fresh perspectives, such as in the chapter "Red Pine Maligned." Here, Peter rebuts the common notion of a red pine plantation being "an ecological desert" with a first-hand tour of his growing forest and the diversity found within it.

In a time when debate over forest management policies are often driven more by sentiment than by science, "Finding the Forest" offers woodland owners a good read and an excellent guide to looking at their own forest through the eyes of a professional forester.
