The Structure of Being in Aristotle's Metaphysics (The New Synthese Historical Library)
Jiyuan Yu Manufacturer: Kluwer Academic Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1402015372 |
Book Description
This book develops a new interpretation of Aristotle's Metaphysics. By exploring the significance of the long ignored distinction between being with regard to categories and being with regard to potentiality and actuality, the author presents that Aristotle's science of being has two distinct aspects: an investigation of the basic constituents of reality in terms of categories, predication, and definition, and an investigation which deals with change, process, and order of the world. The author argues that corresponding to the distinction between these two kinds of being, the central books of the Metaphysics contain not one, but two theories of substance, depending on whether the matter/form relation is associated with the potentiality/actuality relation. Together, these two studies of being and substance provide a complete picture of Aristotle's world as both a static and a dynamic reality.
The book will be of interest to all those who wish to gain a better understanding of Aristotle's Metaphysics.
Book Description
Bernard Lonergan's De constitutione Christi was written to accompany a course being taught in Latin at the Gregorian University, Rome during the 1950s and 60s. This little-known treatise, volume seven in the series, is presented in English translation, accompanied by the original Latin text.
Here, Lonergan tackles the metaphysical and psychological questions raised by the unique makeup of Christ, who is both fully human and fully divine, according to traditional Christian theology. His analysis falls into two parts: ontological and psychological. In dealing with the ontology of the incarnate Word, Lonergan explores the notion of person, and in doing so provides an interesting treatment of the existential question of personal authenticity raised by Kierkegaard and treated by Lonergan under the heading of Existez. Moving into his psychological analysis, he argues that consciousness is not a matter of introspection, a perception of oneself as object, but rather an awareness of oneself as subject. He then applies this understanding to the self-awareness of Christ, with particular reference to the question of Christ's knowledge of himself as both human and divine.
This book is a foundational text in critical areas of contemporary theology; however, it was never widely circulated and has remained effectively unknown to contemporary scholars. With this translation the work will finally be made accessible.

Walter Benjamin: The Colour of Experience
Howard Caygill Manufacturer: Routledge ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 041508959X |
Book Description
In this major reinterpretation, Howard Caygill argues that all of Benjamin's work is characterized by its focus on a concept of experience derived from Kant but applied by Benjamin to objects as diverse as urban experience, visual art, literature and philosophy. The book analyzes the development of Benjamin's concept of experience in his early writings showing that it emerges from an engagement with visual experience, and in particular the experience of colour. br br By representing Benjamin as primarily a thinker of the visual field, Caygill is able to bring forward previously neglected texts on inscription and the visual field and to cast many of his more familiar texts, for instance the i Work of Art in an Age of Mechanical Reproduction /i in a new light.

Historical Ontology
Ian Hacking Manufacturer: Harvard University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0674016076 |
Book Description
With the unusual clarity, distinctive and engaging style, and penetrating insight that have drawn such a wide range of readers to his work, Ian Hacking here offers his reflections on the philosophical uses of history. The focus of this volume, which collects both recent and now-classic essays, is the historical emergence of concepts and objects, through new uses of words and sentences in specific settings, and new patterns or styles of reasoning within those sentences. In its lucid and thoroughgoing look at the historical dimension of concepts, the book is at once a systematic formulation of Hacking's approach and its relation to other types of intellectual history, and a valuable contribution to philosophical understanding.
Hacking opens the volume with an extended meditation on the philosophical significance of history. The importance of Michel Foucault--for the development of this theme, and for Hacking's own work in intellectual history--emerges in the following chapters, which place Hacking's classic essays on Foucault within the wider context of general reflections on historical methodology. Against this background, Hacking then develops ideas about how language, styles of reasoning, and "psychological" phenomena figure in the articulation of concepts--and in the very prospect of doing philosophy as historical ontology.

Materials in Eighteenth-Century Science: A Historical Ontology (Transformations: Studies in the History of Science and Technology)
Ursula Klein , and Wolfgang Lefèvre Manufacturer: The MIT Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0262113066 |
Book Description
In the eighteenth century, chemistry was the science of materials. Chemists treated mundane raw materials and chemical substances as multidimensional objects of inquiry that could be investigated in both practical and theoretical contexts--as useful commodities, perceptible objects of nature, and entities with hidden and imperceptible features. In this history of materials, Ursula Klein and Wolfgang Lefèvre link chemical science with chemical technology, challenging our current understandings of objects in the history of science and the distinction between scientific and technological objects. They further show that chemists’ experimental production and understanding of materials changed over time, first in the decades around 1700 and then around 1830, when mundane materials became clearly distinguished from true chemical substances.

Free Will: An Historical and Philosophical Introduction
Ilham Dilman Manufacturer: Routledge ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0415200563 |
Book Description
The debate between free will and its opposing doctrine, determinism, is one of the key issues in philosophy. Ilham Dilman brings together all the dimensions of the problem of free will with examples from literature, ethics and psychoanalysis, and draws out valuable insights from both sides of the freedom-determinism divide. The book provides a comprehensive introduction to this highly important question and examines the contributions made by sixteen of the most outstanding thinkers from the time of early Greece to modern times: Homer, Sophocles, Plato, Aristotle, St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, Descartes, Spinoza, Hume, Kant, Schopenhauer, Freud, Sartre, Weil, Wittgenstein, Moore.

Freedom in a World of Cause, Chance & Necessity.......2000-08-05
The backdrop of the discussion is indeed vast - ranging from the works of the Greek greats (Homer, Sophocles, Plato and Aristotle) through those of the great thinkers of Christianity (St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas), and of modern philosophy (Descartes, Spinoza, Hume, Kant and Schopenhauer), down to the works of some of the most influential thinkers of the twentieth century (Freud, Sartre, Wittgenstein and Simone Weil). The book begins by asking a question that appears fairly simple despite its profundity: "What is free will and in what way is it distinctive of and grounded in human existence?" The answers to this question, however, have been anything but simple, as we soon realize in going through this extensive examination of views which span the whole spectrum of the freedom versus determinism question.
Among the sources of this problem of freedom and determinism, Professor Dilman identifies the roles of "chance and necessity in human life" and the "apparent incompatibility between human free will and the general law of causality." Indeed, he is quite on the mark in claiming that the book could well have been entitled "Human Freedom in a World of Cause, Chance and Necessity." After all, we are "flesh and blood beings" in a physical world ruled by causality, and we are members of a society shaped both by the cultural forces and historical necessities, while at the same time being subject to the vagaries of chance throughout our lives. It is in the midst of all such limitations, the author claims, that we are to "find our share of the freedom of which we are capable as human beings" (p.7).
The overall position adopted in this book may best be summarized in the succinct statement made several years ago by the non-professional philosopher Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India: "Life is like a game of cards. The hand that is dealt you represents determinism; the way you play it is free will." Of course, the real problem is to decide what aspects of our lives fall under each of these categories. By sorting out these various aspects in the workings of the human mind, Professor Dilman has greatly advanced the scope of the discussion on this subject.
More than a hundred years ago, in his paper on "The Dilemma of Determinism," William James had provided one of the best pragmatic recipes in his well-known observation that if we are free, our first act of freedom ought to be to affirm that we are free. The arguments for free will provided by Professor Dilman indeed constitute just such an affirmation of freedom. By predicating human freedom on self-knowledge, his inquiry into free-will shows us that such freedom implies responsibility, not a license for irresponsible expressions in words or deeds.
I think it was Bertrand Russell who once said that when he wanted to read a good book, he would write one himself! It seems that Professor Dilman has done the same. My only regret is that this book did not come out some years ago before my retirement; it would certainly have been on the required reading list for my course on Philosophical Psychology.
Professor Dilman's book will be of great interest to all fair and broad-minded scholars in philosophy, psychology and literature. It may also be highly recommended for the general readers interested in a broad-based examination of a central psycho-philosophical issue.

The Red Limit: The Search for the Edge of the Universe
Timothy Ferris Manufacturer: Harper Perennial ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 068801836X Release Date: 2002-07-23 |
Book Description
For centuries, it was assumed that our universe was static. In the late 1920s, astronomers defeated this assumption with a startling new discovery. From Earth, the light of distant galaxies appeared to be red, meaning that those galaxies were receding from us. This led to the revolutionary realization that the universe is expanding. The Red Limit is the tale of this discovery, its ramifications, and the passionately competitive astronomers who charted the past, present, and future of the cosmos.

Great work, Timothy ..........1999-08-02
I would like to take a minute to thank Timothy Ferris for abridging, The Red Limit: The Search for the Edge of the Universe, to audio. Shortly after my son was born I began looking for audio novels which would allow me to share my passion of astronomy, physics and astrophysics with my then six month old son, The Red Limit: The Search for the Edge of the Universe, was perfect meeting all the criteria. Timothy Ferris also gets top marks for announciation, his speaking is very clear and easy to understand. It is because of his outstanding work that I decided to purchase his other audio novels, The Whole Shebang and Coming of Age in the Milky Way.
That was 11 months ago. All of Timothy Ferris audio novels turned out to be excellent with a high standard of quality in production. What started off as a casual experiment with audio bedtime stories for my son has now become firmly entrenched as a nightly event. My son now 18 months old, has moved onto the Richard Feyman Physics audio lectures which are also carried by Amazon.
I would like to encourage Timothy Ferris to continue produce more of these types of edutainment audio programs on tape or CD. I love listening to scientific books on my way to work and also love to share them with my 18 month old son as his bedtime stories. In addition to the content, the high level of clear announciation in the Timothy Ferris work is great, it really helps my son to learn new words, concepts and the organization of the english language. More than he would ever obtain in normal everyday speech.
I would love to see the following subjects abrigded to audio for distribution through Amazon.com. Maths, sciences, physics, astrophysics, geology, any and all space related topics, gravity, unified field theory, electromagnetics, electronics, microproccessor design, optics, micro-optics, electro-optics, light and the theory there of, satellites, satellite orbital mechanics and related theory, engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering.
I do not have time in my busy daily schedule to read very much, but do I have five hours a day to listen and learn.
If you make it I will support it.

A wonderful marriage between writing and drawing.......2001-03-08
His interest in weather drew him toward old diaries and almanacs that were filled with the weather lore of early American countrymen. And this, in turn, acquainted him with the countryman's reverence for wood.
One result was this wonderful book, whose prose is illustrated with more than 70 of Sloan's skilful pen-and-ink drawings. There's an excellent marriage between his writing and drawing. Just when you wonder exactly what some of his words might mean, along comes another drawing to make everything perfectly clear again. Many of the drawings are very detailed and packed with fascinating information about long ago wood lore.
If you like this book, you'll probably enjoy anything written by May Theilgaard Watts, a fine naturalist who knew how to draw. You may especially enjoy her "Reading the Landscape of America" at the same time as you enjoy Sloan's "Our Vanishing Landscape."
