    Book Description

This book develops a new interpretation of Aristotle's Metaphysics. By exploring the significance of the long ignored distinction between being with regard to categories and being with regard to potentiality and actuality, the author presents that Aristotle's science of being has two distinct aspects: an investigation of the basic constituents of reality in terms of categories, predication, and definition, and an investigation which deals with change, process, and order of the world. The author argues that corresponding to the distinction between these two kinds of being, the central books of the Metaphysics contain not one, but two theories of substance, depending on whether the matter/form relation is associated with the potentiality/actuality relation. Together, these two studies of being and substance provide a complete picture of Aristotle's world as both a static and a dynamic reality.

The book will be of interest to all those who wish to gain a better understanding of Aristotle's Metaphysics.

      Book Description

Bernard Lonergan's De constitutione Christi was written to accompany a course being taught in Latin at the Gregorian University, Rome during the 1950s and 60s. This little-known treatise, volume seven in the series, is presented in English translation, accompanied by the original Latin text.

Here, Lonergan tackles the metaphysical and psychological questions raised by the unique makeup of Christ, who is both fully human and fully divine, according to traditional Christian theology. His analysis falls into two parts: ontological and psychological. In dealing with the ontology of the incarnate Word, Lonergan explores the notion of person, and in doing so provides an interesting treatment of the existential question of personal authenticity raised by Kierkegaard and treated by Lonergan under the heading of Existez. Moving into his psychological analysis, he argues that consciousness is not a matter of introspection, a perception of oneself as object, but rather an awareness of oneself as subject. He then applies this understanding to the self-awareness of Christ, with particular reference to the question of Christ's knowledge of himself as both human and divine.

This book is a foundational text in critical areas of contemporary theology; however, it was never widely circulated and has remained effectively unknown to contemporary scholars. With this translation the work will finally be made accessible.

In this major reinterpretation, Howard Caygill argues that all of Benjamin's work is characterized by its focus on a concept of experience derived from Kant but applied by Benjamin to objects as diverse as urban experience, visual art, literature and philosophy. The book analyzes the development of Benjamin's concept of experience in his early writings showing that it emerges from an engagement with visual experience, and in particular the experience of colour. br br By representing Benjamin as primarily a thinker of the visual field, Caygill is able to bring forward previously neglected texts on inscription and the visual field and to cast many of his more familiar texts, for instance the i Work of Art in an Age of Mechanical Reproduction /i in a new light.

        Book Description

With the unusual clarity, distinctive and engaging style, and penetrating insight that have drawn such a wide range of readers to his work, Ian Hacking here offers his reflections on the philosophical uses of history. The focus of this volume, which collects both recent and now-classic essays, is the historical emergence of concepts and objects, through new uses of words and sentences in specific settings, and new patterns or styles of reasoning within those sentences. In its lucid and thoroughgoing look at the historical dimension of concepts, the book is at once a systematic formulation of Hacking's approach and its relation to other types of intellectual history, and a valuable contribution to philosophical understanding.

Hacking opens the volume with an extended meditation on the philosophical significance of history. The importance of Michel Foucault--for the development of this theme, and for Hacking's own work in intellectual history--emerges in the following chapters, which place Hacking's classic essays on Foucault within the wider context of general reflections on historical methodology. Against this background, Hacking then develops ideas about how language, styles of reasoning, and "psychological" phenomena figure in the articulation of concepts--and in the very prospect of doing philosophy as historical ontology.

The possibilities of what can be found to be true or become true have opened up with our advance in technology. There are things that we can make true today that have never been true before. (Idea from Hacking interpreting Foucault). This might also be called Darwinizing Ontology with reference to "Darwinizing Culture: The Status of Memetics As a Science" - by Robert Aunger. Book Description

In the eighteenth century, chemistry was the science of materials. Chemists treated mundane raw materials and chemical substances as multidimensional objects of inquiry that could be investigated in both practical and theoretical contexts--as useful commodities, perceptible objects of nature, and entities with hidden and imperceptible features. In this history of materials, Ursula Klein and Wolfgang Lefèvre link chemical science with chemical technology, challenging our current understandings of objects in the history of science and the distinction between scientific and technological objects. They further show that chemists’ experimental production and understanding of materials changed over time, first in the decades around 1700 and then around 1830, when mundane materials became clearly distinguished from true chemical substances.

The authors approach their subject by scrutinizing the modes of identification and classification used by chemists and learned practitioners of the period. They find that chemists' classificatory practices especially were strikingly diverse. In scientific investigations, materials were classified either according to chemical composition or according to provenance and perceptible qualities. The authors further argue that chemists did not live in different worlds of materials before and after the Lavoisierian chemical revolution of the late eighteenth century. The book's two main studies first explore the long tradition that informed Lavoisier's new nomenclature and method of classifying pure chemical substances and then describe the continuing classification of plant materials according to a pre-Lavoisierian scheme of provenance and perceptible qualities even after the chemical revolution, until a new mode of classification was accepted in the 1830s.

            Book Description

The debate between free will and its opposing doctrine, determinism, is one of the key issues in philosophy. Ilham Dilman brings together all the dimensions of the problem of free will with examples from literature, ethics and psychoanalysis, and draws out valuable insights from both sides of the freedom-determinism divide. The book provides a comprehensive introduction to this highly important question and examines the contributions made by sixteen of the most outstanding thinkers from the time of early Greece to modern times: Homer, Sophocles, Plato, Aristotle, St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, Descartes, Spinoza, Hume, Kant, Schopenhauer, Freud, Sartre, Weil, Wittgenstein, Moore.

5 out of 5 stars Freedom in a World of Cause, Chance & Necessity.......2000-08-05

Professor Ilham Dilman's book on FREE WILL is undoubtedly one of the most comprehensive historical and philosophical studies of the subject to date. It is virtually an intellectual odyssey into a realm of the human mind that has continued to challenge the greatest thinkers and sages for well over two millennia. All the most significant landmarks in this long course of philosophical history are covered in a most lucid and engaging presentation.

The backdrop of the discussion is indeed vast - ranging from the works of the Greek greats (Homer, Sophocles, Plato and Aristotle) through those of the great thinkers of Christianity (St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas), and of modern philosophy (Descartes, Spinoza, Hume, Kant and Schopenhauer), down to the works of some of the most influential thinkers of the twentieth century (Freud, Sartre, Wittgenstein and Simone Weil). The book begins by asking a question that appears fairly simple despite its profundity: "What is free will and in what way is it distinctive of and grounded in human existence?" The answers to this question, however, have been anything but simple, as we soon realize in going through this extensive examination of views which span the whole spectrum of the freedom versus determinism question.

Among the sources of this problem of freedom and determinism, Professor Dilman identifies the roles of "chance and necessity in human life" and the "apparent incompatibility between human free will and the general law of causality." Indeed, he is quite on the mark in claiming that the book could well have been entitled "Human Freedom in a World of Cause, Chance and Necessity." After all, we are "flesh and blood beings" in a physical world ruled by causality, and we are members of a society shaped both by the cultural forces and historical necessities, while at the same time being subject to the vagaries of chance throughout our lives. It is in the midst of all such limitations, the author claims, that we are to "find our share of the freedom of which we are capable as human beings" (p.7).

The overall position adopted in this book may best be summarized in the succinct statement made several years ago by the non-professional philosopher Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India: "Life is like a game of cards. The hand that is dealt you represents determinism; the way you play it is free will." Of course, the real problem is to decide what aspects of our lives fall under each of these categories. By sorting out these various aspects in the workings of the human mind, Professor Dilman has greatly advanced the scope of the discussion on this subject.

More than a hundred years ago, in his paper on "The Dilemma of Determinism," William James had provided one of the best pragmatic recipes in his well-known observation that if we are free, our first act of freedom ought to be to affirm that we are free. The arguments for free will provided by Professor Dilman indeed constitute just such an affirmation of freedom. By predicating human freedom on self-knowledge, his inquiry into free-will shows us that such freedom implies responsibility, not a license for irresponsible expressions in words or deeds.

I think it was Bertrand Russell who once said that when he wanted to read a good book, he would write one himself! It seems that Professor Dilman has done the same. My only regret is that this book did not come out some years ago before my retirement; it would certainly have been on the required reading list for my course on Philosophical Psychology.

Professor Dilman's book will be of great interest to all fair and broad-minded scholars in philosophy, psychology and literature. It may also be highly recommended for the general readers interested in a broad-based examination of a central psycho-philosophical issue.

            Mohammed Mujeeb Rahman, Ph.D.

1 out of 5 stars Dilman gives a biased account of many philosophers.......2000-04-07

I had to read this book for a class on the subject of free will and was appalled by Mr. Dilman's biased account of many of the most prominent philosophers and their views on free will. The chapter on Plato is GROSSLY mistaken and wrong. Mr. Dilman constantly reads into the philosophy things which simply are not there. He is obsessed with Simone Weil and attempts to work her "moral gravity" into every chapter; there is no evidence of such in Kant, Schpoenhaur or Plato despite what Mr. Dilman attempts to say. DON'T buy this book if you are looking for an unbiased and accurate account of the history of free will.

2 out of 5 stars We Still Need A Good Introduction to Vaclav Havel.......2003-03-28

After the fiasco of John Keane's revisionist / slash-and-burn biography of Vaclav Havel, it is nice to read a book that tries to summarize the real contributions of this man without all the fuss. Sire makes an honest effort to grapple with the political and intellectual complexities of Havel's plays and treatises. He also correctly understands that the English-speaking world needs a short and sweet introduction that is accessible to a variety of non-specialist audiences. If you happen to be teaching a world drama or a comparative politics seminar, and you want to spend a week on Havel, you might want to assign this book to be read in tandem with The Memorandum or "The Power of the Powerless." However, the book has significant limitations. The main difficulty stems from someone whose ghost continues to inspire trouble: Martin Heidegger. Sire is quite right to situate Heideggerian categories like "the horizon of Being" as central to Havel's thought and work. Unfortunately, he has a weak grasp on this discourse, both philosophically and historically. The result is that Sire tends to portray Havel as a kind of mystic throughout the book. Couple this with Sire's wish to offer an "appreciation" of Havel, and the result is a hagiography of an already familiar kind.
Until someone writes the 150 page introduction to Vaclav Havel that we need (Paul Wilson, do you have your ears on?), you should pick up Aviezer Tucker's The Philosophy and Politics of Czech Dissidence from Patocka to Havel (Pittsburgh: University of Pittsburgh Press, 2000).

            4 out of 5 stars A Good Starting Place.......2001-08-13

For the person who knows nothing about Vaclav Havel, Sire has written a very good, basic introduction to the writings and actions of one of the most amazing thinkers in the world today. In a short space the reader is quickly introduced to the plays, politics, and philosophies of the absurdist playwright and political dissident who became the president of the Czech Republic. While there are a few points at which it seems that Sire may be imposing some of his own American Evangelical definitions on the terms that Havel uses, overall the book works well as a guide for the beginning Havel reader.

This is, unfortunately, the only book of Jewish Medieval thought for the secular reader, that I know of. As such, it's a valuable source, but it's incomplete.

This study of Jewish life at the end of the Middle Ages was when it was first published in the early sixties considered a breakthrough work. The late Yaakov Katz was for many decades one of the outstanding students of Jewish social life. This work is a model of clarity in both conception and writing.

                      Book Description

For centuries, it was assumed that our universe was static. In the late 1920s, astronomers defeated this assumption with a startling new discovery. From Earth, the light of distant galaxies appeared to be red, meaning that those galaxies were receding from us. This led to the revolutionary realization that the universe is expanding. The Red Limit is the tale of this discovery, its ramifications, and the passionately competitive astronomers who charted the past, present, and future of the cosmos.

                      5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-01-30

A great review of the discovery of the expanding universe; the science is interesting and understandable for the lay person. Even more compelling is the drama of the scientists themselves, there life, personalities, strengths, foibles and their wonderful discoveries. It is science and history of science combined in an easy to read 250 page book that helps us all comprehend just a grasp of the incomprehensable nature of our existence in this universe.

                      2 out of 5 stars Book's OK, but...........2004-12-05

The Red Limit is another of Timothy's Ferris excellent distilliations of astrophysics for public consumption. As usual, he is skilled not only in making science concepts comprehensible but bringing into vivid detail the *story* of science -- how we know what we know. It even includes the occasional philosophical discussion.

So why the low rating? Because this book is twenty years old. I had assumed that the reprint would maybe have some updated material, but it doesn't. This is effectively a book on the State of Cosmology circa 1983.

Don't waste your money on this. Ferris's own Whole Shebang is better written and more up to date. You might also check out Lonely Hearts of the Cosmos, which is a very similar book but far better and has been updatee for the most recent discoveries. Bill Bryson's Brief History of Nearly Everything only covers cosmology in basic detail, but is also far more up-to-date.

5 out of 5 stars Great work, Timothy ..........1999-08-02

                      August 2, 1999

I would like to take a minute to thank Timothy Ferris for abridging, The Red Limit: The Search for the Edge of the Universe, to audio. Shortly after my son was born I began looking for audio novels which would allow me to share my passion of astronomy, physics and astrophysics with my then six month old son, The Red Limit: The Search for the Edge of the Universe, was perfect meeting all the criteria. Timothy Ferris also gets top marks for announciation, his speaking is very clear and easy to understand. It is because of his outstanding work that I decided to purchase his other audio novels, The Whole Shebang and Coming of Age in the Milky Way.

That was 11 months ago. All of Timothy Ferris audio novels turned out to be excellent with a high standard of quality in production. What started off as a casual experiment with audio bedtime stories for my son has now become firmly entrenched as a nightly event. My son now 18 months old, has moved onto the Richard Feyman Physics audio lectures which are also carried by Amazon.

I would like to encourage Timothy Ferris to continue produce more of these types of edutainment audio programs on tape or CD. I love listening to scientific books on my way to work and also love to share them with my 18 month old son as his bedtime stories. In addition to the content, the high level of clear announciation in the Timothy Ferris work is great, it really helps my son to learn new words, concepts and the organization of the english language. More than he would ever obtain in normal everyday speech.

I would love to see the following subjects abrigded to audio for distribution through Amazon.com. Maths, sciences, physics, astrophysics, geology, any and all space related topics, gravity, unified field theory, electromagnetics, electronics, microproccessor design, optics, micro-optics, electro-optics, light and the theory there of, satellites, satellite orbital mechanics and related theory, engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering.

I do not have time in my busy daily schedule to read very much, but do I have five hours a day to listen and learn.

If you make it I will support it.

5 out of 5 stars Cliff Claven writes a book........2007-06-22

This is one of my all-time favorite books. I read it in a sitting. I'm not even all that interested in wood or building anything else that may have made me a likely fan. The writing was fantastically engaging, and the tidbits and anecdotes just kept coming. I say it's Cliff Claven writes a book because that's how I've been describing it for 10 years now - Sloane's enthusiasm and honest passion are to writing what the charm of a pure young laugh is to happiness. I've given this book away I don't know how many times, and have never heard of somebody not loving it too.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, both for woodworkers and those interested in early Americana.......2007-01-11

This is Sloane's best book in my opinion, but then I've been a woodworker for many years and already have "a reverence for wood". There is much to learn here, a lot of information compressed into easily understood drawings and text and a joy to study. Highly recommended for both the woodworker and anyone interested in wood and its properties and uses.

                            4 out of 5 stars Pretty neat........2002-10-28

This is an easy read that yet conveys quite a bit of information. An important part are the drawings, which say more than a thousand words. It is an atmosphere book, which lets the reader understand something of the relationship between the early Americans and their material (wood). It also shows that wood allows more uses than what passes for woodworking these days.

I am a little dubious about the inclusions of trees in the back. The author appears somewhat out of his depth here (he is no Peattie, not by a long way).

                            4 out of 5 stars A Reverence for Wood.......2001-04-30

I was drawn to this book by it's illustrations. I do not look at this book as a field guide. It is not a book to take into the wilds and identify the surronding wood, but a book that celebrates the Tree and all it's beauty. The pen drawlings give an image of strength and beauty that spark the imagination. A flavor for the majestiy that the trees posses. This book is for pleasure and celebration of trees.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful marriage between writing and drawing.......2001-03-08

Eric Sloane was a painter of clouds and sky who built the Hall of Atmosphere in the American Museum of Natural History. He also wrote several books about weather. Later he produced manuals and three-dimensional models of weather phenomena for training military flyers during World War II.

His interest in weather drew him toward old diaries and almanacs that were filled with the weather lore of early American countrymen. And this, in turn, acquainted him with the countryman's reverence for wood.

One result was this wonderful book, whose prose is illustrated with more than 70 of Sloan's skilful pen-and-ink drawings. There's an excellent marriage between his writing and drawing. Just when you wonder exactly what some of his words might mean, along comes another drawing to make everything perfectly clear again. Many of the drawings are very detailed and packed with fascinating information about long ago wood lore.

If you like this book, you'll probably enjoy anything written by May Theilgaard Watts, a fine naturalist who knew how to draw. You may especially enjoy her "Reading the Landscape of America" at the same time as you enjoy Sloan's "Our Vanishing Landscape."
