    Book Description

The Tudor and Stuart centuries are among the most dramatic in the history of the British Isles. From Henry VIII's divorce from Catherine of Aragon to Charles I's beheading and the Glorious Revolution that sent James II ignominiously into exile, radical solutions were found to old problems - with far-reaching effects on monarchy, state, and people alike. These centuries witnessed the Reformation, the civil wars, and two Revolutions, in which two monarchs, two wives of a king, and two archbishops of Canterbury were tried and executed, and hundreds of men and women tortured and burned in the name of religion. Yet in the same period an explosion of literacy and the printed word, transformations in landscapes and townscapes, new forms of wealth, new structures of power, and new forms of political participation freed minds and broadened horizons. It was an age which marked Britain's emergence as the most liberal and mature of European states. The Oxford Illustrated History of Tudor and Stuart Britain now chronicles and analyses all these events. Written by eighteen leading scholars, this exciting and richly illustrated work explores the political, religious, and cultural history of the period. It covers every aspect of this tumultuous age, from the manoeuvrings of rulers and power-brokers, to the profound social changes that affected the lives of ordinary men and women throughout Britain. Over 200 black and white illustrations and 24 pages of colour plates complement all aspects of the text, and the volume also contains a chronology and glossary together with maps and family trees of the monarchy. Book Description

Does activism matter? This book answers with a clear "yes." American Indian Ethnic Renewal traces the growth of the American Indian population over the past forty years, when the number of Native Americans grew from fewer than one-half million in 1950 to nearly 2 million in 1990. This quadrupling of the American Indian population cannot be explained by rising birth rates, declining death rates, or immigration. Instead, the growth in the number of American Indians is the result of an increased willingness of Americans to identify themselves as Indians. What is driving this increased ethnic identification? In American Indian Ethnic Renewal, Joane Nagel identifies several historical forces which have converged to create an urban Indian population base, a reservation and urban Indian organizational infrastructure, and a broad cultural climate of ethnic pride and militancy. Central among these forces was federal Indian "Termination" policy which, ironically, was designed to assimilate and de-tribalize Native America. Reactions against Termination were nurtured by the Civil Rights era atmosphere of ethnic pride to become a central focus of the native rights activist movement known as "Red Power." This resurgence of American Indian ethnic pride inspired increased Indian ethnic identification, launched a renaissance in American Indian culture, language, art, and spirituality, and eventually contributed to the replacement of Termination with new federal policies affirming tribal Self- Determination. American Indian Ethnic Renewal offers a general theory of ethnic resurgence which stresses both structure and agency--the role of politics and the importance of collective and individual action--in understanding how ethnic groups revitalize and reinvent themselves. Scholars and students of American Indians, social movements and activism, and recent United States history, as well as the general reader interested in Native American life, will all find this an engaging and informative work.

The book was very marked-up and highlites are only helpful if someone highlights well. These highlights were very sloppy and didn't even highlight topics or statements that were useable.

this is a wonderful and enlightening book I recommended to all with an open mind.

4 out of 5 stars Decent Introduction to Ethics.......2001-04-02

I came across this book as required reading for my intro to ethics course. The first chapter was very interesting, but as time passed, I grew somewhat disinterested. While it is a very nice collection of ethics articles, it lacks TRUE diversity.

The readings are fairly diverse, though only within the realm of "common" ethics -- very little space is given to opposition philosophers such as Nietzsche, Crowley, Russell, etc.

Overall, the editors have done a grand job of presenting articles on the more prevalent issues in ethics, both past and present. It could have been more enjoyable (to me) with the inclusion of vastly opposing arguments, but I must say that it does serve the purpose quite well in that it makes you analyze your own beliefs. Highly recommended for those who desire varied readings in "compassionate" ethics; interesting, but not of utmost importance to those looking for more diversity.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great book on ethics, and is a MUST READ.......1999-09-06

This book on ethics is very well-written and its just delightful to read. Don't miss this book, it shou be high on everyone's reading list!

                  Book Description

Readers who believe as Herman MelvilleÂ's Ishmael, that “meditation and water are wedded for ever,” will be entranced by Rex Johnson, Jr.Â's, account of his travels to the upper Bavispe River in MexicoÂ's northern Sierra Madre. Combining travel observations, natural history, ethnography, ecology, and ichthyology, JohnsonÂ's narrative plunges the reader into a world that is so far from the twenty-first-century United States that it is difficult to believe how physically close the two countries actually are.

Johnson goes in search of an ancient species of trout, the Bavispe, at least 3 million years old. It has been easier for the Bavispe to remain unchanged for millennia than for the human inhabitants of the Sierra Madre to endure for mere centuries. Johnson notes the areaÂ's Indian descendants are in the process of becoming modern, and the needs of the ancient trout, dependent on pure, unpolluted water, collide at times with the choices of people scratching out an existence in a challenging environment.

The parallel stories from natural and human history are a central theme in JohnsonÂ's account of environmental change and its consequences, layered with the personal, contemplative meaning he finds in the quest for the seldom-seen fish.

Color and duotone photos accentuate this trip back in time on Mexico's Bavispe River in northern Sierra Madre.

This is a fascinating exploration of a relatively unknown region of two countries. A study in determination and patience, Johnson's writing sparkles like the clear rills, pools and falls that I thought were gone forever. A refuge for survivors, from the Apaches to the rancheros, parrots and "narcos" of today, this is another view of the region Cormac McKarthy calls "not for old men". Complimented with great photography.

5 out of 5 stars South of the Border Trout.......2005-07-24

I really enjoyed this book. While its topic is not exactly fishing, not exactly enviro, not exactly travel - Johnson mixes opinions, observations and facts on trout, politics, south west history, people, and a look at how one may live in a very elemental style. He writes well. I will read it again and the photos are fascinating. I hope Rex Johnson does more books as this, along with his guidebook on trout in southern new mexico, are very high quality........

Trout outlines time tested techniques and strategies, while breaking the monotony of a how-to manual by incorporating stories of the hunt that make you yearn for the spring season. I picked up many good strategies that I will use while hunting turkeys.

1 out of 5 stars The Bright Country:A Fisherman's Return to Trout,Wild Water and Homself.......2007-01-03

Mr. Middleton is in a much darker period of his writing and life at the time of his writing this book and though he still writes well, the tone takes on a darker shade than The Earth is Enough or On the Spine of Time which are cherished pieces in my collection.

                      5 out of 5 stars Small World.......2001-06-26

THE BRIGHT COUNTRY is a heartbreakingly beautiful, sad, hilarious, touching book that flows and burbles along like a favorite trout stream. I've probably bought 6-8 copies of the book over the years and loaned, given or otherwise forced it upon at least twice that number of people. It's not a perfect novel, but is easily the most honest look I've ever encountered into the heart of a guy I wish I'd had the opportunity to know. There's more than a little bit of trout fishing, but this is a book that hooks non-anglers as well.

                      5 out of 5 stars A Bright Ending.......2001-04-24

I can't write Harry Middleton to tell him how much I admire his writing, or how much his stories and themes resonate in me. He died not long ago. And if I may quote Russell Chatham, "It hurts to know that Harry Middleton rode the back of a garbage truck every night during the wee hours to put groceries on his family's table." It's true. It's part of this story.

This is the moving, affecting story of Middleton's struggle with depression, his mother's death of brain cancer, and, most memorably, a blind trout on the South Fork of the Platte River. Like all of Middleton's books, the language is wonderful and the characters are memorable. Perhaps more so than most, this book is Middleton laying his soul bare, telling a story as it happened, cutting close to the bone.

And if flyfishing isn't the whole story here, it is part of the path to redemption.

Harry, we hardly knew you, and I wish there had been more time, and more books. But you will live on for me and for those readers who discover you. Ollie ollie oxen free.

This one is destined to be a trout fisherman's classic! Pithy descriptions, exceptional humor and delicious details make this book both fun to read and a piscatorial adventure to put alongside Walton, Bergman, Gierach, Wulff, Grey, and others of similar stature. Next to fishing, fly fishermen love to read about their sport and this tome provides a great escape into fine writing and fun fishing tales. And be sure to follow up with Mr. Montgomery's "Many Rivers to Cross: Of Good Running Water, Native Trout, and the Remains Of Wilderness."

5 out of 5 stars The best book on fly fishing for trout I have read!.......1997-04-16

I have fly fished for over forty years, and although there are many excellent books on the subject, I keep this one on my night table. I've lost count of how many times I've read it! Mr. Montgomery is the real article. I found myself nodding in affirmation page after page. This book is a treat for anyone interested in trout or flyfishing. There has been a lot of hype about flyfishing for trout since "A river runs through it" was made into a movie. This book cuts through all the crap. This man knows trout! an excellent read
