4 out of 5 stars Massive, attractively priced, and a bit disappointing.......2004-06-11

First, the good points: this work is huge, well illustrated, and priced at about one third of what a commercial publisher would have to charge for something comparable. Probably no resource has treated the Garden State so thoroughly since the WPA guide was published about 65 years ago.

The downside, unfortunately, is that the contents are disappointing. Since the book has no index, or even a classified list of "essay" entries, there's no way to locate a topic unless you're able to hit upon the precise title under which it's discussed (assuming it's in there somewhere). The scope of coverage is quirky: it seems that every hamlet in the state has its own entry, yet there is no general treatment of, for example, industry or commerce or dairying or corporations (all things that are or have been highly important to New Jersey). Several of the general entries I have read so far are not exactly packed with information; the entries on industrial architecture and law, for instance, are as much about trends that apply to the whole nation as about anything specific to New Jersey.

Still, this work is certainly worth having, and Rutgers should be praised for making it possible. At present, no other reference work comes close.

5 out of 5 stars A much needed book for New Jersey!.......2004-06-06

If you live in New Jersey, or just want to know about the Garden State, this book was a long time in coming and a very welcomed addition to any library. It is amazing how many interesting facts and stories there are about NJ, and all are found in this compact and easy to read book. It is also bursting with interesting photos, facts and figures. Written by many different experts on their own domains of the state, it brings together varied writers and writing styles. It's both a respected academic addition, while being well written and stimulating to just pick up and pick a county!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing guide to everything New Jersey!.......2004-06-05

I received this as a gift and haven't been able to stop reading it. It makes the most wonderful gift--it must weigh ten pounds! It's a massive guide to everything you'd ever want to know about New Jersey. When you read one entry it leads you to another, and so on, which makes for compulsive reading. There is even an entry for the small town where I grew up, South River, New Jersey. I don't think any family in New Jersey should be withtout this book - it's also great for research papers for school. This encyclopedia should make all New Jerseyans proud of our great state!

Book Description

She needs no introduction. For decades, she's been the world's leading icon of democracy. Four million people visit her each year. She is the very symbol of America. But how well do we really know the Statue of Liberty? Did you know, for instance, that her origin dates back to Roman antiquity? Or that New York narrowly beat out Philadelphia for the right to house her? Or that her nose is three feet, eight inches long?

In time to celebrate Lady Liberty at the millennium, this gorgeous encyclopedia is sure to satisfy the countless requests historian Barry Moreno has received to deliver the first full-scale reference ever written on the Statue of Liberty. As its name implies, The Statue of Liberty Encyclopedia promises to answer every possible question about our famous monument. Featuring an abundance of little-known but fascinating aspects and curiosities about the statue's history, the book also presents a vast collection of illustrations -- many never before published -- ranging from the amusing to the poignant to the pa-triotic. Stops on this visual tour include Betty Grable making a visit to the statue, antique autogyros flying overhead, and a gravity-defying glimpse of Liberty's spiraling inner armature.

The Statue of Liberty Encyclopedia is not just the history of one monument but the story of our nation and its far-reaching cultural and ideological roots. Elegant and eloquent, the book will stand as an emotional, educational, and entertaining testament to the statue's enduring significance.

5 out of 5 stars Best Liberty Book since 1986!.......2000-10-09

Finally, a book worth having! There were a lot of books published between 1984 and 1986 for the statue's centennial and only a few were worth having. This newly published book is a must have for the Statue of Liberty collector, historian, or proud American.

"The Statue of Encyclopedia, serves as the first ever top-to-bottom reference on one of the most beloved national monuments. Barry Moreno, the premier expert and historian of the Statue of Liberty, leads readers on a comprehensive, beautifully illustrated A-to-Z tour. Featuring an abundance of little-known but fascinating aspects and curiosities about her history, the book also includes a vast collection of photographs - many never before published."

5 out of 5 stars Every American should own this........2000-09-23

Whether you're political, or artistic, every American should own this book. What does the Statue of Liberty mean to you? An intangible concept that is broken down into encyclopedia form for scholars and us regular folks to digest. There are dozens of books about the Statue, but I found this one is by far the most comprehensive and the pictures are of outstanding quality. Highly recommended.

To examine the long-run origins of democracy and dictatorship, Downing focuses on the importance of medieval political configurations and of military modernization in the early modern period. Downing maintains that in late medieval times the development of constitutional arrangements predisposed Western Europe toward liberal democracy.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting thesis, well written book.......2003-08-22

Downing makes a strong and easy to follow argument that European governments were able to support the modern standing armies of the 17th and 18th centuries only by destroying decentralized proto-representative institutions inherited from medieval times and taking direct control of taxation, conscription, and military leadership. Such governments then developed into autocracies, whereas, in countries that either didn't need large standing armies or were able to support those armies by plunder rather than taxation, the medieval institutions survived and eventually developed into democracies. The argument is backed by interesting, although brief, comparitive historical analyses of Prussia, France, Britain, Poland, Holland, and Sweden. Personally, I wasn't entirely convinced, but Downing is an unusually clear and concise writer and knows his stuff, so it's worth deciding for yourself.

3 out of 5 stars interesting but flawed interpretation of Early Modern Era.......2000-05-17

downing notes that a "military revolution" is the driving force behind the transformation of the demesne state towards our own modern day liberal democracy. i find myself questioning downing's basis of causality. besides taking a step much too large for his short tract, i am overcome by great difficulties in his reasoning. why could this idea not work in the opposite direction? the author provides little to answer this basic contention. is it possible that it was the emerging form of government that provided the foundation for such increasingly complex and 'revolutionary' war efforts and not the other way around as downing suggests? to me this seems at least equally plausible and possibly more so. this interpretation is based on a theory of governmental change just as downing has his argument based on an assumption of military change. in short, how is it possible to tell which is changing and therefore affecting the other? the author makes no attempt to clarify this. e.g. gunpowder was around early on but was not widely proliferated in battle until much later due to poor casting and inconsistent manufacturing. if war were really the driving force behind the political developments then why is it that only when the political superstructures have seemingly evolved sufficiently that we find gunpowder in sudden widespread use? his effort is to be lauded in that he has at least provided an interesting and somewhat comprehensive account of a difficult and complex subject matter.

                    Book Description

In the history of international relations, few events command as much attention as revolution and war. Over the centuries, revolutionary transformations have produced some of the most ruinous and bloody wars. Nevertheless, the breakdown of peace in time of revolution is poorly understood. Patrick Conge offers a groundbreaking study of the relationship between war and revolution.
How can we best understand the effect of revolutionary transformations on the politics of war and peace? Conge argues that it is only by bringing in, first, the organizational capacity of revolutionary regimes to extract resources and convert them into military strength and, second, the power of transformative ideas to transcend national boundaries and undermine the ability of opposing regimes to compromise that we are best able to understand the effect of revolution on the origins and persistence of war. By incorporating such key elements, this book provides a new, more comprehensive explanation of the relationship between revolution, war, and peace.
Conditions that lead to and sustain wars in general are identified and placed in the light of revolutionary transformations. Once the argument is presented, historical case studies are used to test its plausibility. Conge demonstrates the importance of the effect of revolutionary organization and ideas on the outcome of conflicts.
Political scientists, historians, sociologists, and the general reader interested in the politics of war and peace in revolutionary times are given new perspectives on the relationship between revolution and war as well as on the implications of political organization for military power and the process of consolidation of new regimes.
Patrick J. Conge is Assistant Professor of Political Science, University of Arkansas.

                        Book Description

This book examines a period of particular importance in the formation of the modern French state. The revolutionary strife and international war of the 1790s had important and far-reaching consequences for the development of democracy and bureaucracy in France. Howard G. Brown's study of changes in army administration in this period sheds light on the dynamic relationship between the spread of political participation, the rationalization of public power, and the build-up of military might. Dr Brown shows how the exigencies of war and the vagaries of revolutionary politics wrought rapid and profound changes in the structures and personnel of army administration. Although loath to see a massive military bureaucracy take root, legislators found that their desire to combine civilian control with military effectiveness made a large central administration unavoidable.

                              Book Description

Pattern recognition presents one of the most significant challenges for scientists and engineers, and many different approaches have been proposed. The aim of this book is to provide a self-contained account of probabilistic analysis of these approaches. The book includes a discussion of distance measures, nonparametric methods based on kernels or nearest neighbors, Vapnik-Chervonenkis theory, epsilon entropy, parametric classification, error estimation, free classifiers, and neural networks. Wherever possible, distribution-free properties and inequalities are derived. A substantial portion of the results or the analysis is new. Over 430 problems and exercises complement the material.

5 out of 5 stars May be the best pr book from a theoretical standpoint.......2004-04-12

In giving this book a second read, its importance finally dawned on me: it is one of the few if only books that provides a well-rounded theoretical (i.e. mathematical definitions and proofs) perspective on pattern recognition. Although other books, such as Duda et al's "Pattern Classification", have a significant degree of mathematical rigor, very few can claim to be based on the solid mathematical foundations of Lesbesgue measure theory, as this book is. This book has been a big inspiration for me, in that most pr papers I come across provide some method X, and show how experimentally it is more efficient or effective than methods Y and Z. Such papers, although possibly generating interest in the subject or method, do little if anything to advance the theory which in the end will have the final say of how, when, and why something works or when it doesn't. On the other hand, by making the assumption that the data comes from an unknown (i.e. nonparametric) probability measure space which induces an inherent optimal Bayesian error on the classification problem, this book shows how the theory of probability can be used to prove some very interesting results.

As an example, the authors define what it means to have a universally consistent classifier; i.e. a classifier which converges to the optimal Bayesian classifier as the amount of training data approaches infinity in the limit (irregardless of the data distribution). Moreover, one of the important results is that such classifiers exist and are often quite easy to devise (e.g. nearest-neighbor methods). And to be able to mathematically prove this is indeed inspiring.

In closing, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has the mathematical prereqs (probability from an abstract measure-theory point of view)
and is interested in doing high quality mathematical research in pattern recognition. For that audience this book will provide a good foundation for literally an unlimited number of interesting questions; many of which remain unanswered.

For those who are more interested in the practice of pattern recogition, the above mentioned book by Duda et al. (ISBN 0471056693) will do just fine as a reference. The book "Pattern Recognition" by Theodoridis et al. is also of high quality (ISBN: 0126858756).

5 out of 5 stars An excellent but should be rated R........2001-01-25

The book is great but the notations the authors employ will make you want to drop it on a first reading. Despite the generic title, it is really a reference book for the experts.

Issues in generalization are presented better in the book by Anthony and Bartlett but overall it is the best book available (for learning theorists).

This book provides a solid theoretical foundation for pattern recognition and statistical learning. If you consider yourself and expert, or want to be an expert in this field, this book is a must read. It will make you think hard about the concepts (and may be question whether you are or want to become an expert!).

This is an awesome book, the best in-depth book on statistical classification to date. Filled with theorems and proofs on classical nonparametric techniques plus neural networks and learning. Standard reference for anybody doing serious pattern recognition and learning. Destined to become a classical reference in the field.

                                  Book Description

Written by one of the world’s leading groups in the area of Bayesian identification, control, and decision making, this book provides the theoretical and algorithmic basis of optimized probabilistic advising.

Starting from abstract ideas and formulations, and culminating in detailed algorithms, the book comprises a unified treatment of an important problem of the design of advisory systems supporting supervisors of complex processes. It introduces the theoretical and algorithmic basis of developed advising, relying on novel and powerful combination black-box modeling by dynamic mixture models and fully probabilistic dynamic optimization.

Written for a broad audience, including developers of algorithms and application engineers, researchers, lecturers, and postgraduates, this book can be used as a reference tool, and an advanced text on Bayesian dynamic decision making. A CD contains a specialized Matlab-based Mixtools toolbox, and examples illustrating the most important and complex areas of the material presented.
