    Book Description

In The Digital Hand, James W. Cortada combines detailed analysis with narrative history to provide a broad overview of computing's role in sixteen industries, accounting for nearly half of the U.S. economy. Beginning in 1950, when commercial applications of digital technology began to appear, Cortada examines the ways different industries adopted new technologies, as well as the ways their innovative applications influenced other industries and the U.S economy. In addition, to this account of computers' impact on industry, Cortada also demonstrates how industries themselves influenced the nature of digital technology. Managers, economists, and anyone interested in the history of modern business will appreciate this historical analysis of digital technology's many roles and its future possibilities in a wide array of industries. A detailed picture of what the infrastructure of the Information Age really looks like and how we got there, The Digital Hand is a sweeping survey of how computers transformed the American economy.

Actually, the entire series is available as streamed content, online, at www.learner.org, and one might want to act quickly to view it seeing as how Bush W lapdog Tomlinson is still the head of the CPB, and has been working rather quickly to help Bush "Leave Every Child Behind" by attempting (thankfully failed) to cut the budget for PBS, pay investigators with your tax money to watch Bill Moyers for dissenting anti-GOP views, etc, so who knows how long this series will stay up, considering the amount of Marxism imbedded in the analysis (as far as economic determinism, class consciousness, anti-nationalism). Just do a search for 'western tradition' at the site.

    Or...
    [...]
The texts that go along with it are fantastic for hands-on, and even if you don't agree with the sort of generalizations of periodicity or historicity that Eugen has had to construct in order squash our entire history into 52, 26 minute segments, it's better than anything a public school education will give you when you consider walking out of a classroom today will leave you with the narratives that Christopher Columbus was a hero, and not a genocidal maniac, and Abraham Lincoln was an emancipator, and not just a economic sabateur of the American pre-industrial south (let's just thank heavens for all free black men and women that his plan for economic reform had to do with making the southern white male landowners subserviant to the north by driving their production costs up by making them pay for labor, inadvertantly freeing slaves along the way, while the industrialized north continued to rely on machinery!).

Anyway, these sorts of narratives, however over-generalized, offer the viewer at least a basis to have an arguable set of narratives, and the pair of books that goes along with the series are a fantastic way to let you conclude for yourself what Eugen Weber has to offer: if not a history, at least a fantastic tradition of your own western roots. Pair this with wikipedia.org, and you have a free online education on par with the greats.

3 out of 5 stars This is NOT the book of the TV series!.......2000-01-18

Don't buy this book expecting it to be related to Eugen Weber's excellent PBS series of the same name. Instead, it is a collection of historical documents that form the basis of Western thought. Documents range from passages from the Bible, to the US Declaration of Independence and Federalist Papers, to Malthus' treatises on overpopulation. All in all, this is not a bad book to have as a reference to these historical documents. Unfortunately, those hoping for Weber's incisive commentary on the history of the West will have to wait for PBS to rerun the TV series, or will have to buy the series from CPB/Annenberg for.

Global instantaneous mobile telephony is at the cutting edge of the communications revolution. Humanity, for Martin Heidegger, is 'the entity that talks'; Jurgen Habermas is a passionate advocate of authentic human interaction.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting mix of popular culture and philosophy.......2006-05-03

This is one of my favorite books. It is a slim little book but manages to raise important questions about communication, cell phone culture, and (post)modern society. I found the writing style to be clear and lucid, more "English" than "American." I think it is unfair to expect of this book an elucidation of Habermas and Heidegger (especially Heidegger) when its goal is to ambitiously apply the theory of these two philosophers to the world of cell phones. I applaud the author for bringing philosophy to pop culture, and vice versa. Myerson makes many good points and I heartily recommend this book, which has much to offer the questionable society we are living in. This little book is also a cautionary tale about the visit to Starbucks as the epitome of communication and civilization which, unfortunately, most of us are not heeding. But I give Myerson credit for trying. Working in more of Buber's I/Thou, I/It philosophy would have taken Myerson's argument to the next level.

4 out of 5 stars Good, short, concrete introduction to Heidegger and Habermas.......2001-04-12

This is really a very useful book in introducing some central concepts of Heidegger's philosophy and Habermas' social theory as they bear on the frantically growing domain of information-technology-mediated and mobile life, experience, and communication, through a critique of the ideology surrounding the marketing and diffusion of mobile phones (meaning not just cellular phones but especially Internet-capable phones and devices). Myerson uses as his text both marketing literature and newspaper stories about mobile phones and the kind of communication that they are intended for and promote, criticizing them through presenting the alternate models of communication, meaning, and understanding that are central to the work of Heidegger and Habermas in such a way that a reader with no prior acquaintance with these two thinkers could get the gist of what they are trying to do with their thought, and makes Habermas' conception of communication as sharing understanding and meaning and Habermas' distinction between system and lifeworld seem graspable and concretely relevant in terms that everyone has already experienced. He includes an appendix with a brief introductory bibliography for anyone wanting to learn more about these two H's. The book is also extremely short, really it is the length of a magazine article and could be read in an hour or two: the main text is 67 pages long, each of which contains no more than half the amount of print in a standard book. The one critique that one can make of this book is that like other kinds of critiques of ideology, it takes the ideology of mobile phones (e.g. Nokia's self-description of the nature and future of mobile phones) at face value, without paying attention to the ways in which people are often a lot smarter and socially savvy than corporations and advertisers take them to be, and often bend to their own lifeworld purposes and social meanings the devices and methods that are marketed under the ideology of instrumental and efficient communication and behavior. But for a quick, useful introduction to Heidegger and Habermas and a quick critical perspective on the emergent wired world, this book does a very good job.

                Book Description

When the first field study of the Florida panther took place in 1973, so little was known about the animal that many scientists believed it was already extinct. During more extensive research conducted from 1981 to 1986, panthers were proven to exist, but the handful of senile, anemic, and parasite-infested specimens that were captured indicated a grim future. During those early years a remarkably enduring image of the panther was born, and despite voluminous data gathered over the next decade that showed the panther to be healthy, long-lived, and reproducing, that earlier image has yet to be dispelled.

For nine years, biologist David S. Maehr served as project leader of the Florida Panther Study Project, helping to gather much of the later, surprisingly positive data. In The Florida Panther , he presents the first detailed portrait of the animal-its biology, natural history, and current status-and a realistic assessment of its prospects for survival.

Maehr also provides an intriguing look at the life and work of a field biologist: how captures are made, the intricacies of radio-telemetry tracking, the roles of various team members. He describes the devastating intrusion of politics into scientific work, as he discusses the widespread problems caused by the failure of remote and ill-informed managers to provide needed support and to communicate effectively to the public the goals and accomplishments of the scientists. He examines controversial efforts to establish a captive breeding program and to manipulate the Florida panther's genetic stock with the introduction of relatives from west Texas.

Protection of high-quality habitat, much of it in the hands of private landowners, is the key to the long-term survival of the Florida panther. Unless agency decision makers and the public are aware of the panther's true situation, little can be done to save it. This book will play a vital role in correcting widespread misconceptions about the panther's current condition and threats to its survival.

                Dear readers,

Today morning before leaving for work i happen to watch National geographic channel wherein there was one hour programe on Florida panther. It's survival seems to be highly endangered due to the fact that their genetic poll being limited and in-breeding among the cats inevitable it gives a very tragic case of survival. I being an avid wildlife enthsiast from India hope that American people will defenitely do something for the survival of Florida panther.

                Thanks

                Book Description

Award-winning literary journalist Chip Brown tells the story of the life and death of a brilliant, complicated man-an outdoorsman with a troubled soul, a pioneer of the New England wilderness, who sought rebirth in nature only to end his own life on a snowy mountaintop in a gesture of chilling premeditation.

Guy Waterman checked out of his former life as a Capitol Hill speechwriter and father of three at midlife to pursue the passion that promised to deliver him from his demons: mountain climbing. Along with his second wife, he built a cabin nestled in the mountains of Vermont, without modern conveniences of any kind, in order to live purely on the land and for the land, and thereby to redefine himself in the extremes of frontier life. An accomplished jazz pianist who could recite hours of poetry, a genuine eccentric beloved by many, Waterman became the dean of the homesteading movement and the foremost historian of the mountains of the northeast. So when he methodically carried out his mountain suicide, those who loved him were left to wonder whether it was the action of a noble man, painfully aware of the encroachments of age and determined to die with dignity, or that of a tragic figure doomed by the code of the Hard Man-a man who could not find the strength to be weak and forgive his own limitations.

Chip Brown writes with exhilarating clarity about the thrill of mountain climbing and with compassion and intelligence about the mystery that begins when a life ends. Good Morning Midnight is a gripping story of survival in nature, with an existential heart.

5 out of 5 stars Good Morning Midnight.......2006-03-21

Great book, I was touched by Chip's thoughtful writting of such a wonderful, but sad, life and death. It is so sad that friends and family allowed these men to suffer through depression without finding a way to getting them help. It's a message to all of us to help those who can not help themselves.

5 out of 5 stars The Tragic Story of A New England Legend.......2006-03-18

This is a powerful book. Mr. Brown examines the life of Guy Waterman, a man who became the personification of the Old Man Of The Mountain. Guy was an amzing man who workedin fields ranging from speech writing in Washington, to jazz pianist, to winter caretaker of an AMC hut.

There is no hero-worship here. The book examines Guy's dark side as well; his early divorce, chronic depression, the deaths of his two sons, and his eventual suicide.

                5 out of 5 stars A well-penned epilogue.......2004-04-25

This very artfully told tale was truly page turner for me. Thick with literary references, Brown's story of Guy Waterman reflects the complexity of a multi-talented individual, appreciated by many, but omniouly least of all by himself.

I came away with a very strong feeling that Guy Waterman was truly a unique individual. His successes far outweighed his failures. But his ultimate failure was to recognize that hardmen mature into wisemen. Old Men of the Mountain types, who regale their friends and cohorts with lessons and values of challenging and living amongst the mountains. No matter how far flung the challenge, a mountaineer's ultimate objective is to return from his/her adventure to share the experience; the cold, the hard breathing, the colors, the wind and their intimate feelings of wonder or survival. Regretfully, Guy's inner-self, his demons, contested his own outwardly generous, steadfast and friendly personality.

For me, Brown's story reacquainted me with several names and places familiar in mountaineering circles. It also cleard my long held confusion between John Waterman the highly acclaimed, albeit daring alpinist, Guy's son and Jonathan Waterman the prolific author of Alaskan mountaineering.

HOWEVER, as an end note the publisher editorial and Author INCORRECTLY stated that Krakauer wrote about John Waterman. The book Into the Wild was the story of Chris McCandless, by J.Krakauer.

                5 out of 5 stars A beautiful glimmer of a man's interesting life.......2004-02-13

After just finishing the book I found myself wanting to write the author and thank him for letting the reader into another world, a very personal one, of a man who had experienced so much in the ways of life, love, and death. The book flows with it's constant references to Guy Waterman's own writings as well as great literary works. I felt a part of the waterman clan ,without intruding, after reading the book. It has been a long time since a book made anything so real with out being too heavy handed. The adventures are amazing, both in the outdoors and with the human emotions. A fantastically orchestrated work; Chip Brown has proved himself as an outdoorsman and writer.

                1 out of 5 stars Total disappointment.......2004-02-03

I can only hope that Guy Waterman's final freezing hours atop Mt. Lafayette were less painful than trying to get through this book.

If there's a good story in here somewhere, it will take a search and rescue party to find it among Mr. Brown's endless rambling and superflous language. Here's an example, lifted randomly from the third chapter: "Although the Farm was only eight miles from downtown New Haven, where Professor Waterman taught physics at Yale, it seemed a world apart, a kind of Connecticut Shangri-la exempt from the privations of the Great Depression and far from the portents of the Second World War, and impossible, really, to separate from the enchantment of childhood itself, part place, part time, part the memory of that theater of spirits where Mother is forever calling you home from the woods with a silver whistle and Father is ushering you to bed with a lullaby on the grand piano."

Despite his impressive credentials, Brown writes like a novice who is more concerned with constructing elaborate sentences and displaying vocabulary than capturing the reader's interest and telling the subject's story. Shame on this book's editor for not hacking it to shreds.

I purchased Mr. Thiel's book some time ago (December 1994), but have very fond memories of the frequent times that I have read its pages. The content of the book weaves masterfully through historical context coupled with an easy to read style of story-telling narrative. Mr. Thiel's research on the timber wolf in America's Dairyland is impeccable. The manuscript guides the reader from the wolves beginnings in the State and subsequent extinction, to the modern day re-introduction of "canis lupus" to the Northwoods. Having lived in Wisconsin for a portion of my lifetime (and anxious to return!), this was a must read. However, it is not only a book for Wisconsinites, but a well spun chronicle for all ages, and folks from every State in the Union who take an interest in the majestic wolf!

Awesome realistic action photos from the African Savannah. From close-up intimate portraits and family unit interaction shots to the "blood and guts" aspects of nature, where the predators rule. One of the best collections of provocative and truthful visual depictions of life in the wild.
