Book Description
Ian Williams describes in captivating detail how Rum and the molasses that it was made from was to the 18th century what oil is today.
Rum was used by the colonists to clear Native American tribes and to buy slaves. To make it, they regularly traded with the enemy French during the Seven Years' War, angering their British masters and setting themselves on the road to Revolution. The regular flow of rum was essential to keeping both armies in the field since soldiers relied on rum to keep up their fighting spirits.
Even though the Puritans themselves were fond of rum in quantities that would appall modern day doctors, temperance and Prohibition have obscured the historical role of the "Global Spirit with its warm heart in the Caribbean." Ian Williams' book triumphantly restores rum's rightful place in history, taking us across space and time, from its origins in the plantations of Barbados through Puritan and Revolutionary New England, to voodoo rites in modern Haiti, where to mix rum with Coke risks invoking the wrath of the god, and across the Florida straits where Fidel and the Bacardi family are still fighting over the rights for the ingredients of Cuba Libre.

A good read...make connections between slavery and other economic acdtivities like the New England fishing industry to the Rum Trade...makes connection between Rum and the social fabric of the American Colonies...an easy and fun read for anybody interested in American History.
Hack Job.......2007-01-15
I was expecting a lot more from this book that its author delivered. After 180 pages, which are mostly historical, it is really a chore to think of finishing it. The historical writing is really a hack and, I suspect, largely a rip off of one or two sources, Traussig's book from the 1920s. Save your money.
Seemed like an advertising to me.......2007-01-03
I should have been suspicious of a book that had received such perfect set of reviews, but we purchased it anyways.
Right from the start, Mr. Williams sets the tone of his book, which appeared to have been written as a disguised advertising campaign for British Anglo-Saxon culture and British Caribbean rum.
According to his various subtle, and not so subtle passages, in this detail-filled "product placement" literary work, any other culture of rum producing countries had worse products, less history doing it, less "protestant enterprise" and sophistication, and were "relatively more guilty" of slavery, somehow.
Even world famous French Caribbean rums were identified in many old quotes as being "disagreeable in odor" said one, and "a spirit of mediocre degree and disagreeable taste" said another. Mr. Williams subtly but clearly sentenced the many wonderful French Caribbean rums to the land of the detestable and low quality products, far lower than his beloved Anglo-Saxon products.
Judging from his subtle but constant attacks on French Caribbean Rums and also by his frequent mention of another writer, Mr.Alain Huetz de Lemps, whose name he misspelled repeatedly as "de Lemp", his book appears to be a response to such French writer's book "Histoire du rhum (Outremer)", which is also available thru Amazon but unfortunately only in French so far.
Mr. De Lemps has written far many more books than Mr. Williams on food and beverage history of many more cultures around the globe, since the 1950's. So, he must be the real useful reference for anyone interested in food and beverage history.
Mr. Williams commits another blunt literary transgression when he ignored and then also bashed, in his typical subtle manner, Brazil's mega industry of Brazilian rum, locally called "cachaça" (pronounced "KA-SHA-SSA"), which is still mostly unknown to the outside world, even though it dates back to the mid-1500's.
Brazilian production of sugar and its local version of sugar cane distilled alcohol "cachaça" is so old, diverse and large that Brazilian rum is now the 4th largest distilled alcohol product in the world by volume, well ahead of Caribbean rum, whisky and "whiskey", Gin, Sake and Tequila. Brazil produces and consumes over 300 million gallons of Brazilian rum per year but only 1% is exported at the present.
Furthermore, it is worth noting, since Mr. Williams wouldn't do it for us, that the 3rd largest alcohol brand in the world by volume is also one such "cachaça" manufacturer from Brazil that is larger than most world famous names like Bacardi or Mount Gay, and there are an estimated 3.000 other local brands of Brazilian rum to be discovered. Unfortunately, Mr. Williams says nothing about that.
For those who follow the international spirits industry, it is widely known that Brazilian rum is only now becoming increasingly famous, mostly in Europe, where it is used to prepare the tasty Brazilian cocktails "Caipirinhas" (pronounced "KAI-PEE-REE-NYAS), which are made with cachaça, almost any fresh fruit, crushed and then shaken in a mixture with sugar and ice.
Despite the above, Mr. Williams, in his apparent mission to elevate some rum producing nations and put down others, completely ignores these facts, choosing instead to equate Brazilian rum with ethanol fuel for cars.
He chose to do that, instead of recognizing Brazil's long history and formidable experience with sugar and alcohol production, which have been leading the world's production of such commodities for centuries.
If he wanted to dedicate time in a book about rum to discuss Brazil's alternative fuel industry, then he should have said what is true, instead, which is the fact that the Brazilian sugar cane industry is so old, large and sophisticated that it is the leader today in green fuel technology with the production of ethanol FUEL derived from sugar cane by-products, the same technology now being experimented with by US Mid-Western famers using corn, which is not the same as saying that Brazilians "run" their cars on "Brazilian rum".
Mr.William's apparent tactic to equate one idea with the other was clever and simple, making for a wonderful attack on the yet undiscovered Brazilian rum producers. However, Mr. Williams creation is completely false and misleading.
For anyone who is interested in knowing more about the history of rum and its many types or manifestations, it should go without saying that Brazilian rums or "cachaças" are every bit as sophisticated and worth discovering as any other rum in the world. If anything, Brazilian rums are even more intriguing, because they are likely to be older and are certainly less discovered than any other type of rum normally available in the marketplace.
For ignoring these facts, willingly or not, I give Mr. Williams a ZERO in literary integrity.
Rum...Enjoyment in Literature.......2006-05-24
This is a fantastic book. It is a history book that reads like a novel. I had no idea that the history of "Kill-Devil" was so convoluted and storied. Mr. Williams clearly not only understands his subject, but is passionate about it. I recommend this book to every armcahair alcoholics who love their booze and love thier history. It never hurts to know what you're getting into, or what's geting into you.
Book Description
The bestselling author of Truman and John Adams, David McCullough has written profiles of exceptional men and women past and present who have not only shaped the course of history or changed how we see the world but whose stories express much that is timeless about the human condition.
Here are Alexander von Humboldt, whose epic explorations of South America surpassed the Lewis and Clark expedition; Harriet Beecher Stowe, "the little woman who made the big war"; Frederic Remington; the extraordinary Louis Agassiz of Harvard; Charles and Anne Lindbergh, and their fellow long-distance pilots Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and Beryl Markham; Harry Caudill, the Kentucky lawyer who awakened the nation to the tragedy of Appalachia; and David Plowden, a present-day photographer of vanishing America.
Different as they are from each other, McCullough's subjects have in common a rare vitality and sense of purpose. These are brave companions: to each other, to David McCullough, and to the reader, for with rare storytelling ability McCullough brings us into the times they knew and their very uncommon lives.

Short Pieces by McCullough.......2007-09-02
With this collection of essays, most written in the 1970s and `80s (but one reaching back into the 1950s), David McCullough exhibits both his strengths and (comparative) weaknesses as a writer. Biography is his forte, and his portraits of Humboldt, Agassiz, Remington, and Harriet Beecher Stowe are first-rate, the sort of pieces that should be analogized in high school literature texts as examples of limpid prose in the hand of a master. Likewise, McCullough's condensation of his Great Bridge is a masterpiece of synthesis; and "Glory Days in Medora" is a classic of a fine and fair portrayal of a character (the Marquis de Morès) whom McCullough rightly finds distasteful.
Nevertheless, McCullough drops to the level of good journalism when he interviews living people, sometimes in "National Geographic style" ("A bell at the railroad crossing starts clanging, and Plowden, obviously delighted, tells me, `We're going to have a dividend.'" [177]) I admire McCullough as both a great writer and as a historian whom no jealous academic has yet been able to bring down. But frankly, jeremiads about strip mining and fawning depictions of profane photographers are not his strong suite. I bet he knows that now.
Grand. Heroic. Inspiring. Endearing........2007-08-21
BRAVE COMPANIONS is a leisurely stroll through the life and times of America. Put on your jacket, turn up the collar, grab your favorite walking-stick and set out for a fascinating walk with America's storyteller, David McCullough.
Washington, Agassiz, Remington, Harriet Beecher Stowe. Some larger-than-life, others obscured through time's dim glass. The Panama Canal, South Dakota Badlands, the rural mid-west. West Virginian coal mines. Places famous and forgotten.
McCullough has an eye for the dramatic and grand. Remington and Roosevelt, thundering across the range, trying to explore the western frontier before it becomes civilized and tame. The building of the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City, the engineering marvel of its day, contrasted with another engineering marvel, the Panama canal which cost of hundreds of lives in the muck and mire of jungles and mud.
He also has an eye for wonder in the small, tiny details of creation; the delicate, exacting drawings of Audubon and Agassiz, the flea collections of Ms. Rothschild, the painfully detailed drawings of a long-forgotten architect or the private musings and ruminations of a Commander-in-Chief who longed for heart and home.
"We live in the present, it's all we have." And no one captures other peoples' present, quite like David McCullough.
Interesting, Informative, Superb...as usual.......2007-07-09
I found this little gem in the wrong section of the library and upon seeing the author, knew it was going to be good. I was right - it's quintessential McCullough. He, like Paul Johnson and Daniel Boorstin, see history in terms of people great and small. In fact, in the preface he admits his preference for people over politics, of the individual over the group.
The work is actually a compendium of various essays written for various reasons and in various journals. The "biographical/great deed" aspect is the common bond among them. One characteristic of ideologues is their disinterest in individuals and their lives. Their only concern in the movement, the creed, the ideology for which they live and die. But real history is actually the story of people (not movements) and it is here that the past comes alive. McCullough chose a seemingly random group of individuals. They range from the naturalist Humholdt, his successor Louis Agassiz, intrepid novelist Harriet Beecher Stowe to a man who fought strip mining in Kentucky just to give you a flavor of the variety offered. McCullough delights in describing not just their ideas and deeds but their looks, their likes, dislikes, manner of speaking - in other words, they become real once more.
We follow McCullough from the Brooklyn Bridge to France to Brazil and are dazzled by him as much as he is dazzled by the personalities he has chosen to describe. The final chapter is a deeply felt reflection on history, a summation that is not a review but still offers a fresh voice. My Grade - A
McCullough's Brave Companions.......2007-05-17
A small book that delivers more than promised by the reviewers. Even the introduction is enjoyable. Each chapter introduces a person that deserves to be remembered; most of whom, would indeed, be a wonderful companion. Good history, good read-aloud book for families.
Enjoyable collection of biographies and history.......2007-05-07
David McCullough has an amazing gift that makes me enjoy reading about people I really don't have any interest in.
Book Description
From HIV to influenza, the battle between infectious agents and the immune system is at the heart of disease. Knowledge of how and why parasites vary to escape recognition by the immune system is central to vaccine design, the control of epidemics, and our fundamental understanding of parasite ecology and evolution. As the first comprehensive synthesis of parasite variation at the molecular, population, and evolutionary levels, this book is essential reading for students and researchers throughout biology and biomedicine.
The author uses an evolutionary perspective to meld the terms and findings of molecular biology, immunology, pathogen biology, and population dynamics. This multidisciplinary approach offers newcomers a readable introduction while giving specialists an invaluable guide to allied subjects. Every aspect of the immune response is presented in the functional context of parasite recognition and defense--an emphasis that gives structure to a tremendous amount of data and brings into sharp focus the great complexity of immunology. The problems that end each chapter set the challenge for future research, and the text includes extensive discussion of HIV, influenza, foot-and-mouth disease, and many other pathogens.
This is the only book that treats in an integrated way all factors affecting variation in infectious disease. It is a superb teaching tool and a rich source of ideas for new and experienced researchers. For molecular biologists, immunologists, and evolutionary biologists, this book provides new insight into infectious agents, immunity, and the evolution of infectious disease.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2006-06-20
I really like this book. It presents a wonderfully concise set of well written examples, with key literature cites. Some very interesting problems that illuminate the complexity.
Minor erratum on page 117. States that sum of squares of the two alleles is the incidence of the combined. Correctly, when squaring both sides it is:
(p+q)^2 = 1^2
p^2 + 2pq + q^2 = 1
2pq = 1- p^2 - q^2
pq = (1 - p^2 - q^2)/2
So properly speaking, it is one-half of 1 - sum of the 2 squares for the simple case of 2 alleles. i.e. about 27%
But, that is a minor technical error that is common to make. The book is very good and does an excellent job of bridging the gap between introductory material and advanced research questions.

Book Description
The HIV epidemic has spawned a scientific effort unprecedented in the history of infectious disease research. This effort has merged aspects of clinical research, basic molecular biology, immunology, cell biology, epidemiology, and mathematical biology in ways that have not been seen before. In The Evolution of HIV Keith A. Crandall brings together researchers from these disciplines to present perspectives on both the molecular biology and molecular evolution of HIV.
The book is organized into three sections: "Introduction to HIV" explores the fundamentals of the virus's molecular biology and its global diversity. "Molecular Methods for Studying HIV Diversity" looks at such topics as HIV phylogenetics, modeling the molecular evolution of HIV sequences, the use of phylogenetic inference to test an HIV transmission hypothesis, and coalescent approaches to HIV population genetics. The third section,"Case Studies of HIV Evolution" examines the levels of diversity within and among host individuals, the phylogenetics of known transmission histories, and HIV evolution and disease progression via longitudinal studies.
The book will be of interest to researchers and clinicians working on HIV, as well as scientists studying molecular evolution, population genetics, and evolutionary biology. Contributors are John M. Coffin, Keith A. Crandall, Joseph Felsenstein, Walter M. Fitch, Brian Foley, Esther Guzman, Paul H. Harvey, David M. Hillis, Edward C. Holmes, Marcia L. Kalish, Bette T. M. Inventing the AIDS Virus

Book Description
Despite enormous efforts, over 100,000 papers and over $22 billion spent by the US taxpayer alone, the HIV-AIDS hypothesis has failed to produce any public health benefits, no vaccine, no effective drug, no prevention, no cure, not a single life saved. Is the science system to be blamed? Has science failed to reveal the truth about AIDS? In AIDS: Virus or Drug Induced?, two dozen scientists, scholars and journalists have investigated the status quo of AIDS research. Most of them have questioned the HIV-AIDS hypothesis before, but have since been censored, and sociologically excluded from AIDS research, politics and journalism. Here they are united for the first time to put on trial the HIV-AIDS hypothesis. There are those who acquit HIV entirely. Others who make a case for HIV as a necessary, but not a sufficient cause of AIDS. And one medical scientist who, together with the huge AIDS literature, defends the hypothesis that HIV is sufficient to cause AIDS. The book convincingly reveals that the scientific method could very well find a solution to AIDS, but only if ideas can be exchanged freely and if the HIV monopoly can be broken. AIDS: Virus or Drug Induced? illustrates that the solution to AIDS could be as close as one of several, very testable and very affordable alternatives to the unproductive HIV-AIDS hypothesis.
Customer Reviews:
A terrible book.......2007-01-03
This book is wrong. There is overwhelming scientific evidence that AIDS is late stage HIV. To believe otherwise is to be confused by semantics. This confusion has cost so much to countries like South Africa. Please don't buy this irresponsible and misleading book.
very important- highly recommend!.......2002-12-17
People believe the HIV-AIDS hypothesis only because they are not being shown the whole picture - and because the status quo has endured for so long. Its endurance is not due to its merits - people are working very hard at maintaining it's prominence. Most would not even suspect the extent of what has been and continues to be hidden from the general public. This subject is enormous - and extremely important. These books ,and the www, are currently the only way for informed insiders- top scientists + nobel laureattes - to warn the public about the serious failings of the HIV hypothesis + the all too human characteritics of those we trust with our lives. Informing oneself about this subject could prove priceless - whether personally affected by AIDS or not. See Peter Duesbergs site, Virusmyth, Rethinkingaids, Reclaimthebrain for more.
I would urge everyone to read this book , and all of Duesbergs work especially "Inventing the AIDS Virus". It really could be the most important book you ever read...
HIV/AIDS theory full of holes.......2001-09-13
A nice collection of papers detailing alternative theories to the current HIV/AIDS hypothesis. Despite the apparent universal accepted HIV/AIDS model, there are plenty of evidence against HIV being the etiology of AIDS.
Can we afford to be wrong about AIDS causation especially since the currently available treatment for AIDS is a whole series of extremely toxic substances with questionable effectiveness?
And since when do legitimate alternative theories about a disease have to be totally suppressed?
And why was "reader"(one of the reviewers of this book) so vehement in his attack against Duesberg?
It seemed from his comments that he hadn't read a single paragraph from any of Duesberg's books or papers before? Maybe it's his failure to understand the logic of serious scientific arguments!? Has he read Duesberg curriculum vitae?
I highly recommend this book for anything in search of the truth behind the tragic collection of diseases under the name AIDS!
Oh Prunella! Cut the hyperbole!.......2001-08-13
Please ignore the other review of this book. The author of that review abuses very nearly every rhetorical device known to man, when not outright lying.
The issue of AIDS and its origin is too important for people to blindly trust received wisdom. After all, this could be *your* health we're talking about here. Please read everything you can get your hands on with an open mind. Constantly ask questions. Decide for yourself whether or not the AIDS rethinkers raise valid questions/points.
Awful irresponsible quack.......2000-08-24
Despite the fact that this issue was resolved years ago in the scientific arena, this man continues to insist that AIDS-related illnesses are the exclusive result of such factors as malnutrition, poverty, and illicit drug use (i.e., not HIV). In his view, people with HIV positive antibody tests die because they take antiretroviral drugs.
This is absolutely ridiculous since thousands of studies around the world have proved that antiretroviral drugs extend people's lives--in fact death rates are down 60% in countries where these drugs exist and deaths are climbing in places--like Africa and Asia where there are little or no medications.
Duesberg does not prove anything in this book and, in fact, he should probably be brought to court as an accessory to murder since some unsuspecting people are being misinformed with significant and potentially tragic real-life results. Duesberg is completely wrong -- HIV IS transmitted sexually and this has been proven millions of times. This has been absolutely proven --whether in married couples where one is positive and one negative, or in young people who have taken sexual risks. Duesberg is not only wrong but amazingly irresponsible to be disseminating his nonsense, since misinformation adds a level of confusion that is deadly at worst. Neither Duesberg nor his followers conduct medical research nor take care of patients, but instead simply debate and try to look credible.
There is overwhelming evidence that HIV causes AIDS. Every country in the world -- except for developing countries like South Africa (who don't have the money to pay for anti-biotics let alone anti-HIV meds)-- believe that HIV causes AIDS (and if you can imagine, they don't all agree on things). And all Western countries are parting with hard-earned money to pay for these medications that are SAVING so many lives. You cannot trick all these people.
Duesberg is as alone in his ridiculous theory as Hitler was in claiming that Aryans are a superior race or other so-called "scientists" who claimed that the earth was flat. And there were lots of those, for many years after the earth was proven to be round.
If you are HIV positive and want to survive this pandemic DO NOT believe this man who HAS NEVER TREATED ONE PATIENT. IF you are negative, DO NOT believe this man or you will become positive if you take risks (sharing needles or having unprotected sex). If you need to read this book, just remember that every single infectious disease specialist--all HIV specialists -- around the world think that Duesberg is a dangerous quack.

Book Description
Recombinant Poxviruses provides a comprehensive examination of poxviruses with an emphasis on the potential of these viruses as new vaccines. The book considers a wide range of issues involved in producing new genetically engineered live vaccines, such as efficacy, safety, stability, cost, host range, immune response, immunization route, use of multivalent vaccines, and need for revaccination. The opening chapter describes the origin of vaccinia virus, its use to eradicate smallpox, and the pathogenesis of poxvirus infections. Subsequent chapters examine the molecular biology of poxviruses, methods of constructing vaccinia virus recombinants, and applications; the use and immune responses induced by poxvirus recombinants as live vaccines; and the important issues of the safety and immunogenicity of vaccinia virus. The book's final two chapters report the progress that has been made developing avipoxviruses and parapoxviruses as candidate recombinant vaccines. Recombinant Poxviruses will be a welcome addition to the bookshelves of virologists, microbiologists, infectious disease specialists, and veterinarians.
