Very informative.......2005-11-24
Mr Goodwin has produced some of the best books available on Nelson's ships and the Trafalgar campaign. This anthology of usual questions about the mighty ¨Victory¨ is very revealing and gives so many facts and statistics that one feels he just visited this floating museum. Here are almost all the questions that a layman or a specialist would like to ask, like the speed of ¨Victory¨, the kind of armament it had, the three kinds of shots she fired against the enemy, the total length of riggings, full diagrams of her sails, the quantity of oak trees that were used in her construction, the admirals she served under, the number and kinds of anchors it carried, the everyday life details of her crew in war and peace, the food and the sanitary conditions onboard, her famous battles, some secrets of sailing and special maneuvers and a lot more. The only serious drawback is the lack of color photographs but even so the book is highly recommended for everyone interested in the subject.
Tremendous amount of Detail.......2005-03-21
Sub-Title: 101 Questions & Answers About HMS Victory, Nelson's Flagship at Trafalgar 1805
How much gunpowder and shot did the Victory carry - 35 tons of powder, 120 tons of shot.
What was the age of the people on Victory -- Walter Burke, purser, was sixty seven, Tom Twitchet, the youngest was 12.
How many marines were on Victory -- 146, four of whom were officers.
How was meat kept fresh -- By keeping live animals. Victory sailed with 30 head of sheep, plus chickens, geese and ducks.
What are slops --the collective name for clothing issued to seamen.
There are 101 questions like these, along with their answers in this little book. In addition there are a series of photographs of Victory down through the years. One interesting picture shows the Victory with the Hood (of Bismark fame) in the background.
In addition to providing information about the Victory, there is enough general information to say a lot about the nature of the navy of its day. Quite an interesting book.
Book Description
A combination of scholarship with quite exemplary thoroughness. SPECTATORA profoundly intelligent book which combines the results of monumental research with elegance and lucidity.DAILY TELEGRAPHThe concept of chivalry is one of the central ideas of the medieval world. It developed out of the unique intellectual and practical climate of the times, and found expression in both words and deeds. Richard Barber's wide knowledge of medieval literature and history gives special depth to his study of this fascinating subject. From the prehistory of chivalry - the warrior-knights of early medieval Europe and their developing social role - he moves to an exploration of the chansons de geste, the early romances, and the biographies and handbooks for aspiring knights, to discover the early expressions of the chivalric code. In an extended survey of tournaments and of the knight on the battlefield in the incessant warfare of the middle ages, he studies chivalry in action. Aspects of chivalry, the tensions inherent in courtly love and honourable warfare, made the church's antagonism inevitable, but also gave rise to the great adventure of the crusades and the foundation of the military orders, here vividly recounted. Last but not least comes the adoption of the ideals of chivalry by the princes of western Europe in the formation of the secular orders, before the knight was ultimately transformed into the renaissance courtier.Second edition, revised, expanded and updated.Dr RICHARD BARBER is the author of The Arthurian Legends, King Arthur: Hero and Legend, Tournaments, biographies of Henry II and the Black Prince and The Penguin Guide to Medieval Europe.

A World of Illusion.......2005-09-01
Richard Barber wrote his book, The Knight and Chivalry as a survey of numerous sources, both literary and historical, regarding the development of knights throughout their history. In this book, Barber does not propose a thesis, rather he states his purpose "was to provide an overview of knighthood and chivalry from the beginnings to the Renaissance..." (1)
Barber begins by making the statement that knights were more than just mounted warriors. By Barber's definition, a knight was a mounted warrior who had a special social status and who was part of a group mentality. Barber links a part of the knight's social status to the bond between knight and his leader. The advent of land grants, as part of the system of vassalage, not only tied the knight to the leader, it also provided a much needed income. Land ownership led to prosperous families, who were not necessarily noble, but who could afford the equipment necessary to mounted warriors. As rules about nobility relaxed, these landowners became lords over their fifes and dispensers of justice.
Based on biographies and literature of the time, Barber places the beginning of the concept of knights as a special group in the 1130s. He also finds references in the mid to late twelfth century to rules against knighting sons of peasants and sons of priests.
In addition, the concept of chivalry added to this distinction of knights as a separate group. Barber traces this chivalric attitude to both contemporary literature and earlier poems. He specifically makes reference to the French Chansons de geste, the Spanish Song of the Cid, and the German Song of the Nibelungs. The Chansons de geste describe the battles of Charlemagne. One example of early chivalric attitudes is Roland who faces death bravely and refuses to summon help. He claims, "If the king loves us it's for our valor's sake."(52) In The Neiblungenleid, references are made to killing from behind and throwing a javelin as cowardly acts. There are also examples of challenges being issued before duels. Barber points out that these are precursors to chivalric attitude to be found in literature. He also looks to chronicles of real war for examples of chivalric attitudes. In Orderic Vitalis' twelfth century description of the battle of Bremule, the knights, he says, "were clad in mail and spared each other on both sides, out of fear of God an fellowship in arms."(60)
Barber also traces the development of the knight as more than simple soldier to civil ambitions that brought them into contact with educated members of the royal court. It was at court they were exposed to contemporary literature. Barber believes this literature helped to shape the knights' concept of chivalry, and the court's concept of the knights.
Another factor Barber believes was central to the development of knights was the tournament. As these tournaments developed from the melee fought with few if any rules, to the elaborate productions of the early sixteenth century. These tournaments gave knights an opportunity to practice their skills under controlled circumstances. Tournaments also helped develop the concept of taking hostages as opposed to killing ones enemy.
Barber also considers knights and chivalry in relation to the Church. While the Church initially opposed war of any kind, Barber states that as the Church became more involved in the secular world, it became less hostile toward warriors. "Instead his energy was to be channeled into the maintenance of peace and the defense of the weaker members of society."(29) To this end, the Church began to encourage knighting as a means of gaining control. This culminated with Pope Urban II in 1095 when he called upon knights to join in a crusade to Jerusalem.
The book is organized topically and moves about chronologically within Barber's individual topics. Barber goes into a great deal of analysis of the various sources he draws upon to tell the story of knighthood and chivalry. To meet his goal, Barber has conducted extensive research into a large volume of period literature, biographies, chronicles and contemporary historical writings on the subject. While this book presents and excellent survey of chivalric literature and history, it is not always easy to read and may not appeal to the popular reader.

A must-have!.......1998-07-15
This wonderful book should be on the syllabus of every course in medieval history. Richard Barber is one of the finest authors of popular history books who has ever tackled the complicated topic of the Middle Ages. His works are stellar, and this book is one of his best. In this text Barber examines the knight as he appeared in literature and compares that image to what the knight truly was in history. A masterful work!

Book Description
State parks across Texas offer a world of opportunities for recreation and education. Yet few park visitors or park managers know the remarkable story of how this magnificent state park system came into being during the depths of the Great Depression in the 1930s. Drawing on archival records and examining especially the political context of the New Deal, James Wright Steely here provides the first comprehensive history of the founding and building of the Texas state park system.
Steely's history begins in the 1880s with the movement to establish parks around historical sites from the Texas Revolution. He follows the fits-and-starts progress of park development through the early 1920s, when Governor Pat Neff envisioned the kind of park system that ultimately came into being between 1933 and 1942.
During the Depression an amazing cast of personalities from Franklin D. Roosevelt to Lyndon Johnson led, followed, or obstructed the drive to create this state park system. The New Deal federal-state partnerships for depression relief gave Texas the funding and personnel to build 52 recreational parks under the direction of the National Park Service. Steely focuses in detail on the activities of the Civilian Conservation Corps, whose members built parks from Caddo Lake in the east to the first park improvements in the Big Bend out west. An appendix lists and describes all the state parks in Texas through 1945, while Steely's epilogue brings the parks' story up to the present.
Customer Reviews:
A must read for any Texas enthusiast!.......2000-03-25
Parks for Texas is a fascinating account of the creation of the Texas state park system. Steely deftly weaves political, architectural, environmental, and social history into a rich and compelling text. His examination of the work of the Civilian Conservation Corps in Texas during the depression is meticulous, and is brilliantly placed within the anxious social climate of rural Texas. If you are interested in parks, architecture, political history or just want to know more about how we have changed our view of landscape in the 20th century, this book is a must read. Certainly, if you relish things Texana, this is an absolute necessity for your library. Steely has produced an educated, insightful work, that will no doubt become a classic text on the revoultionary works of FDR's New Deal. Enjoy.

Book Description
Preservation and presentation are central activities in the conservation of the historic environment. But are they mutually supportive or do they work against each other? Managing Historic Sites and Buildings looks at the choices and tensions that exist in the conservation and interpretation of sites of heritage. In essays discussing a variety of locations - from a prehistoric sacred site to World War II military remains, from a medieval monastery to a 1970s housing estate - contributors look at contemporary concerns and debates about the way that the past is shaped, physically and metaphorically, by these two aspects of heritage management. Arguing that the fundamental purpose of the whole process is to communicate understanding about the human past, the collection explores the crucial relationship between preserving historic places and promoting an awareness of their significance.

Book Description
Marking the centennial of the Palisades Interstate Park Commission, Palisades: 100,000 Acres in 100 Years celebrates the unique series of parklands, many within sight of the Empire State Building, that is the Palisades Interstate Park. Beginning with the efforts of Elizabeth Vermilye of the New Jersey Federation of Women's Clubs, who enlisted President Theodore Roosevelt's support to stop the blasting and quarrying of Palisades rock, this book traces the story of the famous- including J.P. Morgan, the Rockefellers, and the Harrimans- and not-so-famous men and women whose donations of time and money led to the preservation of New York and New Jersey's most scenic and historic lands. Despite the involvement of men of great wealth and fame from its earliest beginnings, the Palisades Interstate Park Commission faced an early and ongiong struggle to arrange financial support from both the New York and New Jersey state governments for a park that would cross state lines. The conflicts between developers and conservationists, industrialists and wilderness enthusiasts, with their opposing views regarding the uses of natural resources, required the commissioners of the PIPC to become skilled negotiators, assiduous fundraisers, and savvy participants in the political process. The efforts to create the Palisades Interstate Park was prodigious, requiring more than one thousand real-estate transactions to establish Sterling Forest, to save Storm King Mountain, to preserve Lake Minnewaska, to protect Stony Point Battlefield and Washington's Headquarters, to open Bear Mountain and Harriman State Parks, and to add the other sixteen parks to the Palisades Interstate Park System. The results have been astonishing: an inn and restauant, 350 miles of hiking trails, four large public beaches, 12 swimming pools, two golf courses, 42 miles of bike trails, ten sewage treatment plants, two police forces and a court, highways, parkways, and bridges all requiring almost one thousand employes in the summer season. Because of the PIPC, many millions of people have had the opportunity to enjoy the special beauty of the Palisades. Conservationists, developers, citizen's groups, and politicians from throughout the country have been able to observe cooperation in action, learning from the PIPC the importance of preserving open space within a densely populated area.
