Book Description

Invariably, armies are accused of preparing to fight the previous war. In Learning to Eat Soup with a Knife, Lieutenant Colonel John A. Nagl—a veteran of both Operation Desert Storm and the current conflict in Iraq—considers the now-crucial question of how armies adapt to changing circumstances during the course of conflicts for which they are initially unprepared. Through the use of archival sources and interviews with participants in both engagements, Nagl compares the development of counterinsurgency doctrine and practice in the Malayan Emergency from 1948 to 1960 with what developed in the Vietnam War from 1950 to 1975.

In examining these two events, Nagl—the subject of a recent New York Times Magazine cover story by Peter Maass—argues that organizational culture is key to the ability to learn from unanticipated conditions, a variable which explains why the British army successfully conducted counterinsurgency in Malaya but why the American army failed to do so in Vietnam, treating the war instead as a conventional conflict. Nagl concludes that the British army, because of its role as a colonial police force and the organizational characteristics created by its history and national culture, was better able to quickly learn and apply the lessons of counterinsurgency during the course of the Malayan Emergency.

With a new preface reflecting on the author's combat experience in Iraq, Learning to Eat Soup with a Knife is a timely examination of the lessons of previous counterinsurgency campaigns that will be hailed by both military leaders and interested civilians.

Haven't read the book quite yet. I plan to get it done by the time I am to attend CCC though.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Research and Analysis!.......2007-09-05

For this reader, Learning to Eat Soup with a Knife's value centers on two main premises: 1) those who fail to learn the lessons of history are condemned to repeat them; and, 2) a large, monolithic organization such as the U.S. Army will struggle to adapt unless it adopts a learning culture. Both relate to the U.S. Army's experience in Viet Nam. It is clear that the U.S. Army has only recently begun to learn from its earlier failures fighting a stubborn insurgency in 2004-06 and to implement strategy and tactics appropriate to the situation.

Eminently readable for an Oxford PhD thesis, what sets Learning to Eat Soup with a Knife apart from many other books attempting to explain the failures in Viet Nam is the degree to which the author supports his arguments. He combines exceedingly thorough research befitting a PhD thesis with fully developed and clearly articulated arguments. By examining the British Army of the Malay Campaign and the U.S. Army fighting in Viet Nam in terms of their organizational cultures - that is, the degree to which they promoted learning, flexibility, and adaptability - the author does a superb job of explaining why the British were successful in defeating the communist insurgency on the Malay Peninsula and why the Americans failed in South Viet Nam.

Of course, Nagl has his detractors. There are those who would suggest that the conflict in Malaya in the 1950s differed markedly from the conflict in Viet Nam in the 1960s and early 1970s. For instance, the Viet Cong were able to leverage a well-funded, well-organized, and well-trained North Vietnamese army against the U.S. Army in South Viet Nam. By contrast, the British really only had to confront a communist insurgency in Malaya. However, those readers who point to the dissimilarities in the two conflicts are really missing Nagl's point.

The author's contention that the British Army eventually succeeded in defeating a thinking, adaptive enemy is instructive. In Learning to Eat Soup with a Knife, we are told that for any institution to be successful when faced with new and decidedly different operational challenges, it must be capable of learning and adapting. This includes everything from changing strategy and tactics to completely reorganizing. In fact, it may even need to develop a whole new set of core competencies. In the context of armed warfare, this may mean viewing victory through a different lens. As members of the Bush Administration have readily pointed out, the war in Iraq will not end with a formal surrender aboard a U.S. battleship. More to the point perhaps, Nagl's work compels us to think differently about how we define success in a counterinsurgency.

For the U.S. Army currently operating in Iraq, adapting really means moving away from war fighting strategy and tactics appropriate to a linear battlefield and more toward an approach that better recognizes the nature of the threat. The current threat in Iraq is more socio-political than military. In fact, it is now an article of faith that for our counterinsurgency efforts to be successful, U.S. war fighters must win the hearts and minds of the local populace. If the local Iraqi citizens believe they are more secure and hence can live productive lives, they will be more willing to cooperate with the "occupying" Army. That cooperation will take the form of alerting nearby ground troops to the presence of Al Qaeda fighters and Sunni insurgents.

For any large military organization, adapting to an entirely different threat characterized by a highly complex and dynamic situation involving ethnosectarian conflict, religious persecution, and violent criminal activity such as we see in Iraq today requires tremendous innovation and agility. As Nagl points out, the British were able to eventually embrace change and pursue an effective counterinsurgency strategy while facing a similar set of conditions. He argues persuasively that British and Malay counterinsurgency forces eventually were structured to respond quickly to the communist insurgent threat precisely because they were quite flexible. In large part, the Brits' success can be traced to their approach to counterinsurgency warfare in that era - centralized command with decentralized control. This approach recognizes that the fight is really very different in each province and therefore strategy and tactics will need to be different to attain success.

As Nagl points out, to enjoy the kind of success the Brits had in Malaya, the U.S. Army "will have to make the ability to learn to deal with messy, uncomfortable situations an integral part" of its organizational culture. It must, per T.E. Lawrence, be comfortable "eating soup with a knife." Additionally, as a previous reviewer states quite clearly, "it must be ready to work with outside resources as well, such as the United Nations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and various religious institutions."

Overall, Nagl offers terrific analysis. This work should be required reading for all officers of all branches of the U.S. military.

5 out of 5 stars Counterinsurgency Mandatory Reading.......2007-07-21

Since the Iraq War effort collapsed into something other than a simple liberation of oppressed people, I have tried to gain insight into our problems there by studying books on Iraq's current situation, on US foreign relationships, ancient and recent Mesopotamian history, Israeli and Palestinian Middle East history, and historic counterinsurgency successes and failures in various parts of the World.

Learning to Eat Soup with a Knife is the most illuminating that I have encountered. Col. John A. Nagl very meticulously converts knowledge obtained in writing his Masters and Doctorate theses into a readable analysis of military success in Malaya and non-success in Vietnam.

You must read his preface to the paperback edition both before and after reading the book; this in fairness to our gallant folks serving in the Middle East. You must also abandon any hopes you may have for a blood-and-guts exposé of battleground behavior.

This is science, not sensationalism.

I wish that our military AND our civilian leaders had been able to study this book and to do serious, long-term advanced planning for Iraq based upon it. I am convinced that such luxury would have placed us in a vastly different position than our current one.

5 out of 5 stars Counterinsurgency.......2007-07-03

This book is an excellent review of the successful British counterinsurgency war in Malaysia and the unsuccessful US counterinsurgency in Vietnam. The author draws the correct conclusion that it is necessary to win the support of the people. The author misses the important lesson that the British war cost Britain probably 100 dead vs. the Vietnam cost to the US of 50,000. The second lesson that the author should have learned is that it is critical to keep our casualties low. It is better to take a long time (like the British did - 12 years) that to suffer higher casualties.

I bought a copy of this book for my boyfriend, serving in the US Army. He enjoys it, recommended it to his fellow officers.

        Book Description

"An original, ambitious, and consistently provocative book that should change the way we study and teach American history." —Eric Foner, Columbia University
In this major book, Thomas Bender recasts the developments central to American history by setting them in a global context, and showing both the importance and ordinariness of America’s international entanglements over five centuries.

Bender focuses on five major themes, beginning with 1492 and “the age of discovery,” when people everywhere first felt the transforming effects of oceanic trade. He asks us to see our Revolution as one of several similar rebellions around the globe, and the Civil War as part of a larger history associating the new meaning of nationhood with freedom. He also examines the American commitment to empire from Jefferson’s presidency to our own time, and makes it clear that America’s responses to capitalist industrialization and urbanization were part of a worldwide conversation.

        1 out of 5 stars Poor writing.......2006-10-25

I would like to elaborate on what another reviewer describes as a "tough read." Despite Bender's raving about his editor (and the enhancement of virtually every paragraph), his writing is sorely lacking in (fundamental) style.

The book's concept is great, and Bender is an experienced author and academic. But I stopped reading after 50 pages. Bender's ideas are scattered throughout the page. Trivia is interjected randomly. His paragraph structure is flawed: each should have a kind of introduction, body, and conclusion and does not.

Ironically, Bender is not global in his writing, i.e., he lets himself get bogged down with minutia, losing track of his thesis. I recommend a more strategic approach to writing: does each paragraph represent an orderly advancement towards the purpose of the writing?

2 out of 5 stars New Perspective - Tough Read.......2006-09-07

I picked up this book because its thesis - that American History should be viewed in a world context and not in the type of isolation that is the common way of teaching American History (for example - World War II started on December 7th, 1941) - was not just different, but also a more sensible way to view our history. The thesis is no doubt valid. Although I have read something in excess of 500 history books in the last 25 years this one ranks with some of the tougher ones to read. It never grabs and holds my interest. After 10 pages I am struggling to stay interested. I think the idea is great, but I just can't deal with the prose on the page.

Having said that, I will say that chapter 5, which deals with social legislation at the end of the 19th and dawn of the 20th century, is very good. It is interesting to see how far behind the US was compared to the rest of the world in many areas of social legislation, such as working conditions, food safety, and unionship rights. In some instances, it was not until the new deal that the US "caught up" with the rest of the world in some areas. And in one area, medical care, we still lag far behind many nations.

Overall a good book, but a tough one to read.

5 out of 5 stars A remarkable series of connections between American events and world influence.......2006-06-23

Since 1500 the world has participated in a single global history - yet American historians tend to treat this country as though its history were isolated from that of the world. Here's a new interpretation of American history, setting it within context of international influences. From colonization patterns and objectives to decision-making processes which reached around the world - in both directions - A NATION AMONG NATIONS: AMERICA'S PLACE IN WORLD HISTORY is a remarkable series of connections between American events and world influence, drawn by a history professor with a dozen books to his name.

I picked this work up at the local public library recently. I read the blurb and some of the mini-reviews and then I approached the book with fear and trepidation because I was not fond of the idea of some of my cherished notions of U.S. history being upset. I was all wet. I am now plowing through this very enlightening and easily read book and I am now forming new cherished notions of U.S. history.

        5 out of 5 stars Unique Organization.......2004-05-15

I recently taught a one-semester course out of this text, having chosen Gustafson's book after a careful review of most of the standard introductory PDE texts. The feature which distinguishes this text from its competitors is its organization, which is based upon the author's belief in the pedagogical style of reinforcement through repetition. Within the first 50 pages, the reader has already seen a first treatment of (i) separation of variables and Fourier techniques, (ii) Green's functions, and (iii) variational (or energy) methods. One then repeatedly studies each of these standard solution techniques in greater depth at later points in the text. By contrast, with many alternative texts one can read 300 pages and still know nothing about Green's functions or variational techniques. Additionally, Gustafson writes so clearly that the text could be used for independent study. His selection of problems (3 Problems and 3 Exercises at the end of each section)reflects careful, deliberate choices. One is not overwhelmed with endless pages of repetitious "drill" exercises. Instead, each problem has a definite purpose and illustrates an important point. This text is a masterpiece, and Dover is to be congratulated for keeping it in print.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book To Improve Drinking Habits!.......2007-07-31

This is the best book I've read about moderate drinking and how to get there.

Most of the time I don't have a problem with alcohol but sometimes it takes
over and I drink too much. I have found the suggestions in this book invaluable,
especially pre-planning my drinking behavior with the tips in the program,
eating while I'm drinking and watching the clock to slow down my drinking.
That's just for starters. Cornett gives lots of tips and also works on your
attitude about alcohol and its importance in your life.

I think this book could change the world and have given it to friends who
          drink too much.

5 out of 5 stars Problem Drinker or Alcoholic? It Doesn't Matter!.......2006-07-04

I don't know if I was a problem drinker or alcoholic. I don't care - I'm not into labels. But I do know I wanted to drink less and become less dependent on alcohol. And 7 Weeks helped me. One message in the book is you've got to take responsibility for your drinking instead of chalking it up to genes or a bad childhood or whatever. Another message is you can change if you want to. And Cornett gives concrete tips to cut down.

Who care if you're a "problem drinker" or "alcoholic"? If you want to drink less and have a healthier relationship with alcohol, 7 Weeks is for you. I'd pay twice the price for this book if I had to do it all over again.

5 out of 5 stars A Winner for Anyone Questioning Their Drinking.......2005-11-30

This book has been a lifesaver for me. For years I enjoyed social drinking without problems, but the last couple of years I've questioned if I was drinking too much. This program showed me how to pace my drinking, how to make a drinking plan in advance before I started drinking(which really worked)and how to stick to my limit fairly easily. It also made alcohol less important to me - a huge step in the right direction to get back on the healthy social drinking path again. I recommend this book to anyone questioning their drinking. It's a straightforward approach to drink less and drink appropriately.

5 out of 5 stars Loved this book!.......2005-08-11

I wish I had discovered this book 10 years ago. It spelled out how to achieve moderate drinking. It was easy to follow and best of all it worked for me! There are only a few books out that cover the subject of changing drinking behavior. One is filled with stats, boring and hard for me to stay interested in. Another one was too general - no specifics to help me manage drinking. 7 Weeks held my interest and gave specific tips to keep alcohol consumption down and to beat problem drinking.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Cuts Alcohol Cravings Without Prescriptions!.......2007-07-31

I am so happy I came across this book at amazon. It's the only book I've
found that talks about how other alternative medicines and other cultures
view alcohol abuse and how to treat it. I was thinking about getting
prescription medication to cut the desire to drink but after reading this
I don't need to. There are lots of herbs to do that at the natural food
store. I've read Cornett's other book, 7 Weeks to Safe Social Drinking:
How to Effectively Moderate Your Alcohol Intake, and she always covers
          interesting things.

For me the vitamin and supplement part was the best. It talks about things
you can buy over the counter to cut craving. The Chinese and Ayurveda
medicine parts were really interesting too.

I realize this is only one take on problem drinking. But if you take these
suggestions in the book, along with her program in her other book to
improve your drinking habits you can cut craving and consumption without
          prescription medicine.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant! Why hasn't anyone written about this before?.......2006-07-21

I'm a drinker who has struggled on and off with booze for years and I'm ecstatic someone has finally written about a more organic approach to problem drinking. This book gave me a different perspective. I was especially interested in how chinese and ayurvedic medicine treat drinkers and the concept of "balancing" my life so booze becomes less important and I drink less.

This book opened my mind up. I guess no ones written about alternative medicine to address alcohol abuse because the disease concept and AA are so deeply ingrained in the US.

          Book Description

THE DRINKING WATER BOOK takes a level-headed look at the serious issues surrounding America's drinking water supply. Unlike water purifier manufacturers and public health officials, Ingram presents unbiased reporting on what's in your water and how to drink safely. Featuring all the latest scientific research, the book evaluates the different kinds of filters and bottled waters and rates specific products on the market.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Why Should I Be Concerned About My Drinking Water?.......2006-09-26

Colin Ingram pulls the reader into his book by offering "Ten Quick Tips" to "wet" your appetite for the valuable detailed information that follows.

Ingram, who has years of experience as a scientific writer, articulates with clarity in this comprehensive guide to the importance of pure drinking water for maintaining optimum health. The chapter on water pollutants and the risk to health was startling. There is a logical order to the book as the next chapter deals with water testing and finding out what is in your water, and the best drinking water for good health. I was amazed to discover the various sources of commercial water suppliers and the number and variety of their products.

Several chapters deal with water purifiers and how they work. They include information on filters, distillers, alternative methods, and suggestions for combining types of purifiers. Ingram included suggestions on how to evaluate these systems, types of installations, a cost comparison of purifiers, and a comparison of the cost of bottled water versus that of a purifier.

I found the chapter summaries and author's recommendations especially helpful. He not only introduced primary and alternative methods, and combinations of purifiers, but also pros and cons of various views being expounded by vendors, environmentalists, and politicians.

The appendix, glossary, and index add to this compact, comprehensive manual on how to insure you are drinking safer water.

This is an important, informative, guidebook, calling for imperative action steps to do something about the water you are drinking.

5 out of 5 stars Simple, common sense information.......2006-09-18

I've had an interest in safe drinking water for many years. The market is flooded (pun intended) with advertising and claims. Mr. Ingram has made a difficult field very understandable. So much so, that you can make an intelligent decision on how to ensure safe drinking water for your family. I bought more copies and have given them as gifts.
He claims to be totally independent and from the book, it seems he is.
I am a new author, finishing my book Common Sense, The Joy of Living Smarter. I am listing this book in my reference chapter.

5 out of 5 stars A Candid Review by the Author.......2006-07-31

I wrote this book because after extensive communication with government agencies, universities, non-profit organizations and private sector manufacturers, I simply could not find objective information about drinking water safety and consumer options. Since I have been a professional writer and editor for over four decades, I decided to bite the bullet and do it myself. I spent five years researching material for this book and I have no axes to grind; just the desire for truth. This is the 2nd edition of this book. The 1st edition was hailed as the definitive consumer book on drinking water, and I believe this book is even better. You'll find that it contains the most objective, complete and easy-to-understand information on drinking water that is available, and this opinion has been confirmed by many authorities in the field of drinking water safety. Thanks for your time, Colin Ingram.

5 out of 5 stars The best drinking water book you can buy.......2002-03-25

This book is well named, since it is the definitive book on drinking water. It includes extensive information on water contaminants, water testing, bottled water, and home purification systems. The information is well-researched, easy to read, and well-formatted, with simple charts and diagrams supplementing the text where necessary. I bought several books on drinking water at the same time, and this one was clearly superior to all the others. Don't waste time and money; buy this book first!

3 out of 5 stars Good guide, but..........2000-03-04

This book is certainly a good guide for people living in the US who have to face polluted drinking water in their homes, but if you are a scientist working for some time already in the field of water treatment I recommend that you keep your fingers off this book. This book is certainly written for the broad public and doesn't offer much news for the experienced reader. Especially if you live outside the US this book is not very suitable. It's just a shame that "real" engineering books are always so expensive.
