Excellent.......2002-05-14
I liked this book very much. It gives a good overview of Japan; past and now.
I recommend it!
The most comprehensive sourcebook on Japan.......2001-03-13
Upon receiving that book, I was a little impressed by the amount of bilingual information provided on all kinds of topics, ranging from history to politics and society. Albeit looking austere, the writng style is (surprisingly) very accessible and non-Japanese speakers ,like me, will be able to fully seize the characteristics of the Rising Sun's culture. However, for anyone with a command of Japanese , this encyclopedia offers countless opportunities since all the notions and keypoints are translated in Japanese. I certainly regret the absence of pictures which would have made this encyclopedia more lively, but first and foremost it was pointed at condensing the great Kodansha Encyclopedia of Japan, which I recommand more to people looking for a pleasure cruise along Japan's wonders and culture. Furthermore , I wish they had put some extra information over certain particular aspects of Japan such as the Samurai, the War in traditional society, the relation with the outside world, etc... Nonetheless, this condensed encyclopedia is best for people looking for a comprehensive view on Japan at a reasonable price.

The Longest Night by David J. Eicher aspires to become the standard reference in its field, and it very nearly succeeds. It is strictly a military history of the Civil War, which means it eschews all the political and social context setting that takes up so much space in James M. McPherson's heralded Battle Cry of Freedom (still the best single volume on the war) and focuses almost exclusively on the actual campaigns and combat. Eicher challenges a line of historians that includes Bruce Catton and Shelby Foote, whose own books on the war are classics. He is not quite as good a writer as either of these two, but he does bring something to the subject that Catton and Foote do not: An entire generation's worth of new scholarship. As Eicher himself points out, a big chunk of his sources only became available in the 1990s. This is not to suggest that he offers a dramatic reinterpretation. On certain fundamental topics he has familiar opinions: "I am convinced that the Confederate States of America could not have emerged victorious in the Civil War." Eicher can write with occasional verve, too. Of an obscure operation in New Mexico, he deadpans, "Though [Major General Harry Hopkins] Sibley's strategic goals were fuzzy, his military successes on the surface seemed pleasing, particularly to a commander who experienced much of his campaign under the influence of liquor."
Yet the real strength of The Longest Night is its intricate detail. Although few readers probably want to know how many different types of bronze smoothbore mortars were used in battle (11, according to Eicher), other facts and figures are fresh and fascinating: "Of the 246,712 wounded treated in Federal hospitals during the war, 922 causes were reported as traceable to wounds from edged weapons of any kind [i.e., swords, knives, and bayonets]. Most of those resulted from personal arguments or use by camp guards rather than by fighting on the field." The bulk of the book is chronological retelling of the war, starting with Fort Sumter and ending with the death of President Lincoln and the various Confederate surrenders. It is a strong entry on a subject that continues to fascinate readers everywhere. --John Miller
Book Description
In this compelling new account of the American Civil War, noted historian David Eicher gives us an authoritative history of battle from the first shots at Fort Sumter to Lee's surrender at Appomattox. As a strictly military history, The Longest Night covers hundreds of engagements, both well known and obscure, including the oft-neglected Western theater and naval actions along the coasts and rivers. The result is a gripping popular history that will fascinate anyone just learning about the Civil War while offering more than a few surprises for longtime students.
Drawing on hundreds of sources and excerpts from correspondence by those who fought the war, The Longest Night conveys a real sense of life -- and death -- on the battlefield. In addition, Eicher analyzes each side's evolving strategy; examines the tactics of Lee, Grant, Johnston, and Sherman; and discusses significant topics such as prisons, railroads, shipbuilding, clandestine operations, and the role of African-Americans in the war. This is an indispensable chronicle of the war that James M. McPherson, in the Foreword, calls "the most dramatic, violent, and fateful experience in American history."
Download Description
Like no other conflict in our history, the Civil War casts a long shadow onto modern America," writes David Eicher. In his compelling new account of that war, Eicher gives us an authoritative modern single-volume battle history that spans the war from the opening engagement at Fort Sumter to Lee's surrender at Appomattox (and even beyond, to the less well-known but conclusive surrender of Confederate General Edmund Kirby Smith in Galveston, Texas, on June 2, 1865). Although there are other one-volume histories of the Civil War -- most notably James M. McPherson's Pulitzer Prize-winning Battle Cry of Freedom, which puts the war in its political, economic, and social context -- The Longest Night is strictly a military history. It covers hundreds of engagements on land and sea, and along rivers. The Western theater, often neglected in accounts of the Civil War, and the naval actions along the coasts and major rivers are at last given their due. Such major battles as Gettysburg, Antietam, and Chancellorsville are, of course, described in detail, but Eicher also examines lesser-known actions such as Sabine Pass, Texas, and Fort Clinch, Florida. The result is a gripping popular history that will fascinate anyone just learning about the Civil War while at the same time offering more than a few surprises for longtime students of the War Between the States. The Longest Night draws on hundreds of sources and includes numerous excerpts from letters, diaries, and reports by the soldiers who fought the war, giving readers a real sense of life -- and death -- on the battlefield. In addition to the main battle narrative, Eicher analyzes each side's evolving strategy and examines the tactics of Lee, Grant, Johnston, Sherman, and other leading figures of the war. He also discusses such militarily significant topics as prisons, railroads, shipbuilding, clandestine operations, and the expanding role of African Americans in the war.
Customer Reviews:
Flawed but useful one volume military history of the Civil War.......2007-03-09
Eicher's work is impressive for the sheer volume of information he presents. This book is an overview of every major military action in the Civil War, and Eicher's command of the material is extraordinary. The writer's greatest strength is this broad reach: this work overturns the "Virginia-centric" view of the civil war as an extended battle between the Army of the Potomac and Army of Northern Virginia. We are treated to the whole breadth of the war -- guerrilla cavalry raids, far flung naval actions, detailed descriptions of Western theater aspects of the conflict, implications of occupation in far reaches of the South. Union strategy in the war would be almost indecipherable outside of such a broad context.
On the negative side, this work desperately needs a competent editor. Some other reviews have complained about the book's style, and it's length -- these things are true and they are amplified by the flat, repetitive style of the battle descriptions. But this is more than a stylistic question. One gets the sense, by the end of the book, that Eicher lacks the ability to prioritize, discriminate importance of, and properly frame such a large amount of information. To pick on one example there are frankly worthless facts (in a narrative sense) that the author insists on adding, even many times: he has an odd habit of quibbling about whether many Confederate generals were "brigadier" or not. He brings up the question for perhaps six different generals, the effect reminds you of a schoolkid showing off his knowledge of some quirky but pointless fact in class. And you're thinking, someone needs to beat this kid up.
Great book, but the Adobe version contains no maps.......2006-07-15
Any serious military historian requires maps in his studies; the more detailed, the better. The published version of _The_Longest_Night_ has maps, the list goes for nearly three pages. The Acrobat version has blank pages in lieu of maps. This was a bitter disappointment. It isn't that Acrobat can't handle illustrations, they just weren't there! The most annoying element was that there was no warning that the book contained no maps. As much as I use Amazon, this feature nearly put me off (in fact, I had to come back and order the published version so I could get the maps!)
The Longest Night.......2006-05-20
A one-volume military history of the Civil War, encyclopedic in its detail.
This would probably work best if used as a reference work rather than a book to be read from start to finish -- an undertaking I think most readers will find impossible. The level of detail, including lists of armories and types of ammunition, is daunting.
I finished the book with a number of concerns.
Firstly, Eicher is not a professional historian but an astronomer, and while that certainly doesn't disqualify him from making a valid scholarly contribution, it does make me a little cautious about his credentials.
It's ironic that Eicher chooses to criticize the "dated" prose style of Bruce Catton. LONGEST NIGHT is written in a style that is so dry that I think even highly motivated readers will have trouble getting through the book. Some of Catton's theories may be dated today, but his prose continues to make the Civil War come alive, something that cannot be said for Eicher's.
I found various minor errors in the book, ranging from an oddly skewed version of the Battle of Port Republic to a mistaken source for Jeb Stuart's nickname, and I wonder if, since I found errors on topics I've studied, if there may be greater problems lurking in the background. As well, it's not always clear why Eicher chooses to discuss some events in exhaustive detail and not others -- returning to the cavalry as one example, why give all of John Hunt Morgan's raids in exhaustive detail, but accord almost no discussion to Stuart's rides around McClellan? Perhaps my most serious concern, though, is with Eicher's frequent attribution of emotional states to historical figures without any supporting evidence. For example, he describes Longstreet as "grumpy" at Gettysburg, Lee as "desperate", Mosby in 1864 as "in a sour mood". Especially given that Eicher tries to causally connect these moods with the military actions of the people in question, it worries me quite a bit that he cites no supporting dispatches, letters, diaries or memoirs.
Eicher offers somewhat limited analysis, sticking mostly with a recitation of facts; he does state that he feels it would have been impossible for the Confederacy to win the war, but doesn't, in my opinion, offer convincing arguments why not.
I recommend this only with reservations; there are better, and more enlivening, books in print.
A long, tough slog.......2005-06-16
First off, let me say that there is much to praise in Mr Eicher's book. There is a lot of detail here, and the author does an exhaustive job of covering every action of the Civil War. If you're interested in a battle of any consequence from this conflict, you'll find it described in here.
And that's how this book should probably be approached: as a reference. Reading it from cover to cover is a tough slog. The writing style is dry and forced, and calls to mind a high school essay, albeit a long one and one with impeccable research behind it. Part of this is simply due to the fact that Eicher lacks the writing skill of a Shelby Foote or Bruce Catton. Another part of this is the fact that material that could have and should have been put in a table or in an appendix is placed in the body of the text. So you are forced to trudge through long lists of brigade commanders, unit strengths, artillery descriptions, etc. This is good data, and likely well researched, but it brings the narrative to a grinding halt.
Finally, Eicher presents detail that I just find hard to credit. He will list unit sizes or city/town populations down to the individual, a practice that would just make me pause and think, "Were there really _exactly_ 2,876 people in Pensacola? Weren't people being born, dying, arriving, and leaving every day?" A nit, but the book is tough enough to get through without additional stumbling blocks.
Bottom line, this is a nice reference that appears to be thoroughly researched and that contains a wealth of information. The writing style makes it tough to get through.
An excellent history.......2004-11-13
This is a long and detailed military history of the Civil War. The book is not designed for an overview and if that is what you want save your money. However, if you want to know about more than Shiloh, Antietam, Vicksburg & Gettysburg this is the book. It might be the only book that will tell you how Pea Ridge impacted Shiloh and place the battle of Perryville in the invasion of 1862.
Bias, no I didn't find a problem with the book. It is devoid of the "Lost Cause" Mythology so loved by many and balanced in presenting the people. This often leads to charges like that. Is it a big book? YES, you need pages to lightly cover an event as big as the American Civil War.

Rudmans Biochem GRE .......2007-10-08
This is a terrible, terrible book. The questions are either far too simple, suited for a biology GRE or completely worthless: What was the name of the chimpanzee that spent 38 years with Jane Goodall? If anyone can explain how that relates to biochem, cell or molecular biology, I will eat the book. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS BOOK! ABSOLUTLEY WORTHLESS!
the content is totally unrelated to the GRE.......2007-01-28
The book's content is totally unrelated to the GRE, and moreover, I checked the library and found different copyright dates for the same edition of the same exact title.
DON'T BUY THIS BOOK.......2006-12-04
I agree with everyone else who said not to buy this book. It offers no suggestions on the test and is just a bunch of questions. It is absolutely worthless. The only reason i bought it was because it was the only one available at the time. Download the free practice test and outline from the GRE website and you will certainly do better than if you wasted your money on this.
Irrelevant to the real GRE Biochem test.......2001-12-17
I do not recomment this book, after I glanced through it I never touched it again; it will neither help you learn something, nor give you any idea what the real test is. Buy ETS book to get the idea of what kind of questions occur on the test, and prepare for the test using several big textbooks on these three subjects as well as your lecture notes.
DON'T BUY THIS BOOK.......1999-10-12
This book contains a ton of useless information that will not help you at all in studying for the subject test.

Customer Reviews:
Emphasized the wrong material! .......2007-10-11
I bought this book because it was the only test prep book available at the time for the GRE Biochemistry subject test. The book put a lot of emphasis biochemical synthesis and degradation pathways for amino acids, lipids, nucleotides etc. and I was up until 2:00 am the night of my exam trying to memorize all of this material which I had never learned. When I got into the test the next morning, I realized that all of my memorization had been completely pointless.
The real GRE is nothing like the practice exams in this book! Also, there are many errors in the questions and in the answer keys.
If you want to buy this book as a general review, it has good information for the Cell and Molecular Biology sections, but the Biochem section goes into way too much detail and the practice exams are pretty terrible.
Book Description
These practice workbooks and guides contain essential information for those preparing for GRE subject tests, including practice questions, full-length practice tests that were actually administered at international GRE subject test administrations, answer sheets, correct answers, score conversion tables, and performance data for students who took the tests.
Customer Reviews:
This is a Rip-Off Scam.......2005-01-21
I am a fourth year university student preparing to take the Biochem/Cell Bio GRE Subject Test. I ordered this book thinking that it was a work-book and stugy guide. I was under the impression that this volume would contain multiple sample tests along with study materials in the individual subject areas. At over $90, plus shipping, I was expecting a comprehensive review like the workbooks published by Barron's for the SAT.
To say I was disappointed when I recieved this book is a gross understatement. Its not even a book, it is a 60 PAGE BOOKLET. [...] This booklet contains just ONE full-size subject test, and not much more. The sample test occupies the bulk of the booklet, the remaining 16 pages offer no viable insight as to how you should study for this test, or any valuable tips to get you ahead. Examples of the "advice" contained in this useless booklet includes, "A general review of you undergrad cirriculum is the best preparation," Gee; thanks.
You can obtain a sample test for FREE when you register for your subject test. Do yourself a favor and save your 90 bucks, you can get everyting contained in this lousy booklet AT NO CHARGE. A no-name company called BookoRama in Pennsylvania billed my debit card for almost A HUNDRED DOLLARS. When the booklet arrived, it did not come with any kind of invoice or receipt, just a slip of paper that read "ALL SALES FINAL." It might as well have said "YOU GOT F*****" There is no hope for a refund. On top of it all, to add insult to injury, the list price on the back cover reads: $9.00 US!!!
I got screwed out of my hard earned cash for a worthless, nine dollar booklet. Take it from me; dont order this trash. The only way to study for this test is with your old Biochem, Cell and Genetics textbooks; NOT by dropping over 90 dollars for this SCAM.
These test questions are not available elsewhere.......2004-09-28
The two most recent reviewers have suggested that this book is the same as the PDF file on ets.org. Although I'm sure they were trying to be helpful, that information is false.
The file you can download from ETS is an electronic copy of the same sample booklet that you get in the mail (for free) when you register for the exam.
The published book itself follows the same format (test info, outline of topics, sample test, scoring). However, it is a totally different set of test questions.
For example, page 1 of the test on the ETS website includes questions on: RNA molecules that exhibit catalytic activity; the conversion of pyruvate to oxylate; identifying a particular hormone given a description of its function; oxydative phosphorylation; a general question on enzyme catalyzation; and the turnover of molecular components through the plasma membrane.
Page 1 of the published test guide (the book for sale here) includes questions on: the importance of phospholipids as consituents of cell membranes; the stabilization of folded states of globular proteins; the ionic strength of .5 molar MgCl(2); the most efficient substrate of an enzyme; the terminal electron acceptor for noncyclic electron flow during the light reactions of photosynthesis; the most effective method for isolation of secretory vesicles from a cell lysate; the function of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum (of five listed functions, you have to pick the one that's incorrect); communication among the cisternae of the Golgi complex; and theoretical implications fo the resolving power of light microscopes.
As you can see, they are NOT the same exam.
Both the ets.org PDF file and the published book include 180 questions. Either of them should give you a good idea of how you would do on the real exam.
However, if you can get a hold of the published book (which ETS has stopped making), you have twice as many questions to study from. If you use the actual questions to look up topics, then the bigger pool of sample questions you have, the better. Some people aren't just satisfied with knowing they got a correct answer; they make sure they can identify all the terms and concepts in the *wrong* answers as well.
I think the printed study guide is useful. The two reviewers who say it's not useful haven't even looked at it; they just "heard" it was the same as the PDF file on the website.
Don't bother.......2004-06-11
I bought this book thinking it was a review similar to those for the General GRE exam, I thought wrong. This book is a bound version of a sample test that you can download from the ETS website along with the "helpful" hints that the ETS provides. Don't bother wasting your time and money trying to get a copy of this book, you can download the whole thing as a PDF at the ETS website.
$250!.......2004-04-27
Someone is trying to sell one of these books, used, for $250.
I downloaded a practice test online at gre.org
I hear that its the same information.
Gives you an idea of what's on the test.......2001-12-17
A must for those who are going to take the test, however you should use big textbooks to prepare for the test, for example, Alberts, Lodish, Lehninger as well as your lecture notes.
Actually the funny thing about this test is that nobody ever answers all the questions on the this particular GRE subject test, so dont get depressed if you cant. Actually I dont think anybody can even manage to read all the questions during the real test. What matters is your percentile, not the absolute score. And if you check the the end of each test you will find the warning: "If you finished ahead of time please dont leave the test room" :-))
Product Description
This eBook is a chapter-by-chapter summary of the Biochemistry, Cell Biology and Genetics textbooks. Only topics that are relevant to the exam were summarized in this eBook. Reading thousands of pages from textbooks will cost you months of time. However, reading 62 pages of this summary eBook should take you no more than a day or two. Even if you have studied the textbooks, this eBook will be a perfect guide and study material to review your knowledge.
What are the other benefits of having this eBook?
Well, first of all, there are about 10-15 sales of this eBook per week - which means that many people who are going to take the GRE Subject Biochemistry test, at the same test date that you are planning to take, already have this handy refresher Summary eBook. Why should you give others any advantage over you? Why should you be one step behind them?
The second reason: This Summary eBook will be useful to any Molecular Biologist or Biochemist even beyond the GRE Subject Biochemistry test - you can always go back to this nutshell reference and quickly search, by using "Search" function in the PDF file, any term or concept you want to review during your MS or PhD thesis project. This eBook also has an index, which makes the printed version of the eBook easy to navigate too.
The third reason: The contents of our Summary eBook are 100% relevant to the exam topics (see ETS website). If you start reading any other textbook, say Stryer's Biochemistry for example, you will encounter many chapters that are irrelevant to the GRE Subject Biochemistry test. Even the chapters that are mainly related to the GRE Subject Biochemistry test will contain many irrelevant topics that are not worth spending your precious pre-exam time on. Therefore, by buying our Summary eBook you are not only buying a good study guide for the exam and a useful reference future academic career, but you are also buying yourself a lot of time for the exam preparation.
