Book Description
Every general account of the development of Chinese thought makes mention of Tung Chung-shu (195-105 BCE) as one of the pivotal philosophers of the Han. His Luxuriant Gems of the Spring and Autumn established the first state-sponsored Confucian orthodoxy, and created a view of the ruler and his role in government that was focal in political discussion for two thousand years. The author has carefully scrutinized this text for authenticity, and her book represents the most systematic account yet of Tung Chung-shu's importance in Chinese philosophy and religion.

Excellent account of Dong Zhong Shu's work.......1999-03-09
Professor Queen's informative treatise on the hermaneutics of the Confucian Spring and Autumn is a relatively concise text, though the level of language and jargon is very high. Useful as a text or a resource for research.

In 1919, Johan Huizinga revealed in the original version of this book that the ideals, aspirations, and behaviors of humanity in history were dramatically different from those in present day. In Herfsttjj der Middeleeuwen, he recalled the waning years of the Middle Ages--the low countries in northern Europe in the 14th and 15th centuries--and argued against those who claimed that human belief systems remain the same even if contexts change. His account rested not on historical fact, but on the emotions and ambitions of the people as expressed through the art and literature of their culture. Many people treated the book as groundbreaking work, and it was translated into English in 1924. This new translation is a complete, more direct version of the original and allows modern readers a full appreciation of life in an era rarely revisited.
Book Description
"Here is the first full translation into English of one of the 20th century's few undoubted classics of history." —Washington Post Book World
The Autumn of the Middle Ages is Johan Huizinga's classic portrait of life, thought, and art in fourteenth- and fifteenth-century France and the Netherlands. Few who have read this book in English realize that The Waning of the Middle Ages, the only previous translation, is vastly different from the original Dutch, and incompatible will all other European-language translations.
For Huizinga, the fourteenth- and fifteen-century marked not the birth of a dramatically new era in history—the Renaissance—but the fullest, ripest phase of medieval life and thought. However, his work was criticized both at home and in Europe for being "old-fashioned" and "too literary" when The Waning of the Middle Ages was first published in 1919. In the 1924 translation, Fritz Hopman adapted, reduced and altered the Dutch edition—softening Huizinga's passionate arguments, dulling his nuances, and eliminating theoretical passages. He dropped many passages Huizinga had quoted in their original old French. Additionally, chapters were rearranged, all references were dropped, and mistranslations were introduced.
This translation corrects such errors, recreating the second Dutch edition which represents Huizinga's thinking at its most important stage. Everything that was dropped or rearranged has been restored. Prose quotations appear in French, with translations preprinted at the bottom of the page, mistranslations have been corrected.
"The advantages of the new translation are so many. . . . It is one of the greatest, as well as one of the most enthralling, historical classics of the twentieth century, and everyone will surely want to read it in the form that was obviously intended by the author." —Francis Haskell, New York Review of Books
"A once pathbreaking piece of historical interpretation. . . . This new translation will no doubt bring Huizinga and his pioneering work back into the discussion of historical interpretation." —Rosamond McKitterick, New York Times Book Review

A classic.......2006-12-18
Written originally in dutch in 1919 (the first english translation appeared in 1924), this is a classic of medieval historiography. Huizinga's main thesis goes something like this: the black death of the late 1340s, which decimated European population, brought as a result a morbid sensibility to European culture. It meant also a return to religion, as the cult and veneration of saints grew enormously during the last half of the 13th century and throughout the 14th century. This would bring in excesses of its own, and would lead the way for the reformation of the 15th century to counter it. But the book is more than just the lay out of this thesis, as Huizinga show us the daily life and thoughts of the late middle ages (based mostly from french and flemish sources) in a very vivid way.
thought Provoking and Look into 14th century thought........2006-03-26
Every good historian knows enough to understand that every word of accounts of history is loaded with the adgenda of the author and he too knows enough to investigate theories and ideas that are foreign to his own to try to gather more insight into what actually happened. For that reason alone Johan Huizinga's "The Autumn of the Middle Ages" is a worth while book since even though it might truly be loaded with the authors own ideas it is well substantiated by excellent scholarship. Aside from that it is written beautifully with a poetic prose moder historians often forget to include when they publish their works.
The Author attempts to describe endings rather than begginings, which he claims is against our preferences. He wishes to show what was being snuffed out by the influx of new ideas and re-orientation of man in the unicers that was the renaisance. Among the tings he makes account of is the begginings of the celebration of life through the Humanists but also through the courts that brought man's collective thought back to his earthly existance rather than his reliogious faith and superstitious fantasy.
While I wont say that I accept the author's word at face value I will say he presents good arguments. Of course he cannot know exactly what the medieval mind I thought; I cant know what you are thinking and the same is true of you in regards to my thoughts (I hope). But based on the evidencces Huizinga presents he makes a good attempt. While many histories say what happened this one attempts to ask what were the thoughts that drove what happended in the lat medieval era. If you want to read an interesting look into western re-awekening in the 14th and 15th cenutries this is one of many great books to read.

The Mind of the Middle Ages.......2005-08-17
In his histroiograhical tour of middle ages scholarship, Norman F. Cantor puts Huiznga in his "outriders" section at the back of the book. While he candidly acknowledges the populairty of the "waning of the middle ages" among undergraduates, he takes issue with Huizinga's scholarship.
I think Cantor does Huzinga a disservice, for I found "Autumn" to be eye opening both for its adept analysis and its innovative method. Huzingia is a fore runner of later developments in social history, both in France and the United States. He anticipates the field of "Cultural Studies" in his blend of source materials and thematic chapter arrangement.
It's hard not to think of Foucault as one meanders through three hundred pages of tossed off analysis if how people thought about allegories five hundred years ago in northern france. As Cantor says, Huzingia wrote this book with sources available in any "second tier library". Pretty much any criticism one might have of Foucault's scholarship one might apply here.
It is the speculative nature of Huzingia's scholarship that is both the greatest strength and weakness of "Autumn".
This book is heavy treading. The quotations are printed in their original language, with a footnote at the bottom. The translators have added end notes to explain the more obscure cultural references, but they are END notes, so of little use during the reading. This is not really a "read on the go" type of book. I found I had to focus on reading 20-30 pages a night for a couple of weeks.
Difficult but Rewarding.......2005-03-25
This book is an exercise in the intellectual and social history of a bygone era. Huizinga proposes that one can extract information about the 14th and 15th Centuries in the Low Countries and France from sources other than the wars, the politics of the elite, and elite Church sources that illuminate significant truths about the era. This is not to say that all of these do not appear in the pages of this magisterial effort. They do, but primarily the author looks to other sources for information in an attempt to recreate the context of life during this period. One reader refers to this as the "most hellish book I have ever read," I will assume he is talking about content and not quality. This is a hard book. Most of us are unused to reading intellectual and social histories of bygone eras. It is difficult for us to understand because it demands a mental transition on the part of the reader into a world that does not conform to our experiences and values. This type of history also require a great deal from the historian. However, to denigrate this work as speculative is to miss the point. All historical writing is speculative. The farther the subject is removed from us in time and cultural affinity the more speculative the work may seem. The question ought to be, does this book help enlighten us as to the past and add to our understanding of the era in question? Arcane, old fashioned and rigorous as it may be, Huizinga's book accomplishes its mission with distinction. It remains the greatest source of information on the topic extant in English. Maybe Barbara Tuchman was right, she never said that "A Distant Mirror" was history.
superlative.......2004-02-05
Though this book is absolutely excellent (though the style takes a little getting used to), it shouldn't be the first book you read on the Middle Ages.
I say that not so much because the book is difficult, as because it's elliptical. The book has a lot of discussion about themes prevalent in the art and literature of the later Middle Ages, but it's not a "history": it doesn't tell you what happened.
For example, to make a point about fastidious medieval protocol, Huizinga relates an anecdote about the battle of Crecy. But he never explains what the battle was, who fought in it, or why it was important. He assumes you already know that stuff, so don't come to this book looking for a more straightforward history. This is more a discussion of the major themes and movements of the age, divided by chapter.

What is the connection between genius and madness? IBM-based polymath Clifford Pickover approaches the question in a characteristically eclectic way. First he looks at the lives of a collection of eccentric scientists, from Nikolai Tesla to the Unabomber, giving each a name ("The Fly Man from Galway"; "The Rat Man from London") deliberately reminiscent of Sigmund Freud's names for his cases. Then Pickover discusses obsessive-compulsive disorder and the relationship between brain structure and genius. The book is organized less by an overall thesis than by what interests Pickover; thus, it includes descriptions of vaults filled with brains in formaldehyde, what it means to say that we use only 10 percent of our brains, e-mail replies to a poll on what a supergenius might be, and the latest research on the biochemistry of intelligence. Dedicated "to the cracked, for they shall let in the light," the book is engaging, haphazard, thought-provoking, and genial. --Mary Ellen Curtin
Book Description
Never has the term mad scientist been more fascinatingly explored than in internationally recognized popular science author Clifford Pickover's richly researched wild ride through the bizarre lives of eccentric geniuses. A few highlights:
"The Pigeon Man from Manhattan" Legendary inventor Nikola Tesla had abnormally long thumbs, a peculiar love of pigeons, and a horror of women's pearls.
"The Worm Man from Devonshire" Forefather of modern electric-circuit design Oliver Heaviside furnished his home with granite blocks and sometimes consumed only milk for days (as did Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison).
"The Rabbit-Eater from Lichfield" Renowned scholar Samuel Johnson had so many tics and quirks that some mistook him for an idiot. In fact, his behavior matches modern definitions of obsessive-compulsive disorder and Tourette's syndrome.
Pickover also addresses many provocative topics: the link between genius and madness, the role the brain plays in alien abduction and religious experiences, UFOs, cryonics -- even the whereabouts of Einstein's brain!
Customer Reviews:
The first of many Pickover books I plan to read.......2007-08-24
This is a fun book.It is a worthy companion to the scores of books written about genius-eccentrics -- savants who listen to very different drummers. I don't recommend it as a cover-to-cover read unless your OC switch is on; it should be left somewhere like a night stand, bathroom shelf, or by the computer where one has a few free minutes. Judging from the many other books Pickover has written, this appears to be a syncretic collection of research notes assembled in a fairly logical collection of mini-biographies. And, contrary to other reviews, there are enough references and citations for further readings about a particular person. I also suspect he was researching information relating to himself -- as a multi-talented genius (and not a madman). If so, I would support that he qualifies for this distinction.
Well worth the price.
GOOD BUT LOST INTEREST AFTER AWHILE.......2007-02-12
I liked this book in the beginning but some of the chapters were longer than others, and the facts were interesting but it was also very disturbing in some parts. I lost interest in it after awhile. Definitely a different book. I would rate it 2.5 to 3 stars. I think that each of the scientists deserved the same amount of recognition. There was only one madman in there Ted Kaczynski who shouldn't have been in there. The book would have been better if it was just about scientists.
An Oracle for the Obsessed. Brilliant Work!.......2007-01-20
Pickover's book is "stuffed" with fascinating facts and information regarding the bizzarre personal lives of history's most prominent intellectual thinkers. Like a modern day Mesmer, Pickover leaves the reader spellbound with his unique gift of captivating the mind by illuminating THE MIND itself. This book a gem, the Mona Lisa of mental profiles. What's more, Pickover reveals that OCD isn't a disability ITS A SUPERPOWER! As a certified Obsessive Compulsive myself, I found new life and strength in Pickover's work. Knowing that OCD has plagued the greatest thinkers in history makes the burden that much easier to bear. I recommend this book to all Obsessive Compulsives. It should be recommended reading for all "MONKISH PEOPLES" everywhere. I will forever be indebted to Dr. Pickover. For he has given me an exciting new angle on this dreadful disability.
Couldn't put this book down .......2006-08-27
Excellent book on the frailties of some great scientists and price paid for genius. I couldn't put this book down until its completion. This book will keep your interests from start to finish.
Alternate Realities.......2006-06-24
There is little reason beneath the popularity of reality as it is presented or portrayed to humans except that it is the concoction of the accumulation of data that has been filtered through the conscience of other humans in a position to use it for the benefit of themselves, or the institutions for whom they work. All of current perception is subject to this filtration mechanism that results from the tunnel vision of public and private protocols that created it. Every human is the ongoing creation of the information flow surrounding him or her, and the victim of it, as well as the creator of it.
There is nothing written in stone that forms the human protocol of mankind except what humans are taught to preference - for its good effects, or occasionally, for its bad effects upon societies in which they reside during their lifetime. Interpretation is 100% of that ballgame.
What humans make of alternate realities is tied to their willingness to both question and evaluate alternate realities, their significance and the manner in which they appreciate the introduction of such conflict, or whether their aim is to oppress it. Spiritual and intellectual freedom to examine alternate realities is the provine of freedom, itself, and serves to protect and preserve it, or to further encroach upon its potential to compromise the physical and pscyhological mobility that is the result of such entertainment. A public unwilling to entertain alternate realities is, therefore, a captive of its own purview, and strength lies only in the ability to examine alternate realities and come to logical and beneficial conclusions for the greater good, not to be hoarded for the benefit of a few fortunate souls. Mental capture is the equivalent of physical capture, and reveals much about the predators who would use the force and perception of tradition to deny not only the existence but the potential of human freedom by molding it into a sealed box like that of Pandora's, never to be opened for view or scrutiny. If humanity depends upon that process of capture and seal, it lives only a simulation of existence, not a real existence.

Book Description
Over the past decade the sediments of many rivers, lakes, and estuaries have been contaminated by inorganic and organic materials. Contaminants from sediments, under certain conditions, can be released into overlying waters. Thus, sediments may be an important source of contaminants to waters in which littoral and atmospheric contaminants have been reduced or eliminated. Often found in aquatic sediments, metals are exposed to many reactions, such as sorption and precipitation, and are greatly influenced by the redox conditions in the sediment. The reactions - usually over a period of time - reflect biotic processing as well as chemical transformations. This book describes these important processes. Metal Contaminated Aquatic Sediments outlines advances in environmental chemistry, effective new modeling techniques, applications for biological treatment, and cycling and transport of trace metals in sedimentary environments. Each chapter contains a detailed reference section that draws upon a stunning array of sources. The book includes many figures and tables that illustrate the process under discussion. Features

Description:
In this study the runoff of ^1^3^7Cs, mainly originated from the Chernobyl fallout, from highly contaminated alpine regions in Salzburg (Austria) is discussed. Twenty-five water-samples and 25 sediment-samples were taken from creeks of different size to determine the runoff of dissolved ^1^3^7Cs and Cs-binding characteristics to different particle size classes in the sediments. The hypothesis, that specific activity of the sediments depended on particle size and the surface of the particle, was proved with some modifications. Caesium activity concentration in water showed a negative correlation with electrical conductivity, while no significant correlations were detectable with other variables (pH, temperature, and altitude). Enormous differences and the variations found in the ^1^3^7Cs-concentrations in water can be explained by the electrical conductivity without any dependency on the inventory of the catchment. The sediment samples analysed showed a negative correlation between specific activity [Bq/kg] and particle-diameter, mainly explained by ^1^3^7Cs-uptake proportional to the particle surface per mass.
