Book Description

Little Round Top, the Railroad Cut, Pickett’s Charge—these are the turning points within the most important battle of the Civil War. Even careful students of Gettysburg, however, can find themselves disoriented when visiting the site itself. Here, finally, is a convenient guide for serious student and casual visitor alike that makes plain the sweep of events and the geography of the battlefield.
This invaluable guidebook was created by scholars who have walked the battlegrounds, consulted with local experts and park guides, and studied the testimony left behind by the participants. Gettysburg will help you find all the important locales and understand what the participants saw in 1863, even if you have no prior knowledge of the battle. Designed to enhance the experience of both first-time and returning visitors, this guide can be used alone or as a supplement to a tour. Clearly written and illustrated with maps and photographs, this is the book to have when you explore Gettysburg.

5 out of 5 stars Take what you want, this is the only book you'll need.......2004-11-24

A masterful guide to the Gettysburg battlefield. I took several books on my trip to Gettysburg earlier this year but this was the only one I carried on the battlefield. It is organized around the tour stops, but also contains several side trips to lesser known areas, and simply tells you all you need to know about the events in that area at the time of the battle. It contains several maps and the directions it provides to areas on the battlefield are concise and easy to follow. If you wish to seriously tour Gettysburg National Park, this book is essential.

5 out of 5 stars Made it crystal clear.......2002-10-23

I grew up near Gettysburg & have been there numerous times. I just spent 2 days there with this book on the battlefield--this book made the battle crystal clear! I ran out of time exploring the battlefield (it takes more than the 6 hours described in the book--my only criticism). This book brings the battle to life and explains the terrain like never before. I learned a lot about the battle that I never knew and many components of the battle came into focus in new and exciting ways. In particular, this book does a good job on overviews of each day and with it's clear directions, leads the reader through each stop--I really felt as if I had an expert by my side explaining all the facets of each aspect of the battle. Along the way, everything was just as the book described. The maps were excellent & it's nicely complimented with various portraits of leaders, common soldiers, etc. The guide brings the 3 days together as a cohesive whole. This is the book to get if you're going to visit Gettysburg; forget all the others.

I now live near Chickamauga and I plan on getting their book on that battle!

5 out of 5 stars A Must for the Civil War buff.......2001-10-23

I recently took a trip to Gettysburg (my 3rd) and carried this tour guide for the 1st time. It is far and away the best experience I've had seeing the battlefield. It follows the battle chronologically and offers several sites and insights not offered on the audio tours available at the local shops. Many of the stops are multifaceted. At several points the stops feature 7 to 10 asides which often involve only a minor shift in position to point out various phases of the battle. It includes a side trip to the cavalry field which I've never run into on the audio tours. The driving directions are easy to follow but do veer from the order of the Military Park brochure and the audio tours to give greater detail to the battle. The book says to allow for 6 hours-it's more like 10 hours to give time for exploring beyond some of the "stand here and turn left" instructions. 11 hours total if you include a break for lunch. We started at nine on one morning, toured until about 4 with a break for lunch and finished the following day. Sites included on the audio and Park tours tend to start getting crowded from 11 to 3, so this will add to the tour time depending on time of year and crowd. To sum it all up and paraphrase a popular commercial-when going on a tour of Gettysburg-"Don't leave home without it!"

5 out of 5 stars A great guidebook for first-time visitors!.......2001-06-10

An excellent, well-written guidebook and the best I've seen on the subject. I carried this book on my first visit to Gettysburg in Spring 2001, and it greatly enhanced the experience. The directions are clear and up to date, and the text is precise and detailed enough to be compelling without trying to be an exhaustive treatment of every minute detail. If used as a companion to an actual visit, I would strongly recommend reading the book in advance of your visit, then bringing it with you for reference. There are only a few very minor faults I might find with this guidebook. On the maps, it would be helpful to have present-day landmarks indicated in some way to help with orientation. Also, the book suggests the full tour can be completed in six hours, but in my experience to make all the stops and fully enjoy it you'd need at least a full day, or preferably two. You'll want to leave some time for reflection at such places as McPherson's Ridge, Little Round Top, the High Water Mark, and others to think about the enormity of what occurred on that ground.

Read this book and you'll come away with a good working knowledge of the three-day battle. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars The best Gettysburg guidebook around.......2000-02-14

I have tramped over the Gettysburg Battlefield a half dozen times with various books in hand. My hat is off to Mark Grimsley & Brooks D. Simpson. I found this book to be the most thorough and well written of any text I have used. In November, 1999 I went to the battlefield with the main purpose of studying the fighting around the Peach Orchard and Wheatfield. This book was very helpful in helping me understand the chain of events that occured in these places July 2, 1863. I also found the descriptions of the fighting July 1st around the McPherson Farm to be excellent.

A very good and practical guide.

Book Description

Gettysburg is a paradox: Today it is beautiful, still, and filled with visitors, yet this national military park serves as a powerful reminder of the clash of armies and the great loss of life that took place here nearly 150 years ago. Gettysburg, This Hallowed Ground explores this Civil War battleground through contemporary photographs by National Merit Award-winning photographer Chris Heisey and poems by noted Civil War author Kent Gramm. A brief snopsis of the Battle of Gettysburg and a map of the battlefield introduce the book. Gettysburg, That Hallowed Ground is a tribute to the soliders who gave their lives here and to the military park that is a lasting reminder of our country's most devastating battle.

4 out of 5 stars Gettysburg: This Hallowed Ground.......2007-08-16

Gettysburg: This Hallowed Ground, by Kent Gramm and Chris Heisey, is a short book of poetry and photography centering on the battlefield at Gettysburg, site of one of the most pivotal battles of the War Between the States. Each page is filled with pictures that leap out at you and words that tug at the heart, combining to create an experience almost as meaningful as it must be to actually visit that now sacred place. As one reads, a sense of history flows from the pages to the mind, describing the place so incredibly well that, at times, one can almost hear the gun- and cannon fire - as well as the screams - and smell the powder. Mr. Gramm and Mr. Heisey have created a wonderful memorial to that field and the men who fought, bled and died there with this book.

4 out of 5 stars Transformation at Gettysburg.......2004-11-25

There are many books that discuss the history of the Battle of Gettysburg, most of which get heavily involved with facts, troop movements, and statistics. But this book encourages the reader to pause, change direction, and reflect upon the meaning of the battle through art and meditation.

The book is a collaboration between photographer Chris Heisey and writer Kent Gramm. Mr. Heisey is a noted Civil War photographer who, he states in his introduction, has visited Gettysburg over 1200 times. This book centers upon 66 color photographs of the Battlefield that he has taken during the course of his visits. Mr. Gramm, the author of "Gettysburg: a Meditation on War and Values" (1994) has written 66 poems which accompany the photographs together with an evocative introduction. The book also includes a brief historical summary of the Battle of Gettysburg and an index of images.

Heisey and Gramm's work encourages reflection on the manner in which a battle which produced enormous death, suffering, and sorrow, has been transformed to a place of quiet beauty and peace. They consider the Battle as part of a search for meaning and significance -- much as did Abraham Lincoln when he called upon Americans to address themselves collectively to a "New Birth of Freedom" following the battle. Heisey and Gramm want to encourage reflection on the changes wrought by the Battle of Gettysburg on the United States, but their goal is deeper. They try to see Gettysburg as part of a process of personal self-transformation which encourages self-awareness and growth in one's own life based upon reflection on the sacrifice and heroism displayed on the Battlefield during the first three days of July, 1863. Heisey and Gramm's reflections have a markedly religious character as well and they encourage the reader to see Gettysburg and its peace and stillness as an earthly image of eternity. Visions of personal transformation and of spirituality are inspiring and appropriate ways to think about Gettysburg.

Heisey's photographs are beautiful. In his many visits to the battlefield he has mastered the use of color, light, and shadow. He has spent many hours, he tells the reader, watching the sunrise and sunset at the battlefield to learn the precise moment when a monument or other landmark will be cast in a unique light. The photos are crisp and clear with many degrees of shading, red sunsets, the snow and ice of a Pennsylvania winter, the turning leaves of fall, the hot summers. There are photographs of monuments, statues, the National Cemetery, landmarks such as McPherson's Barn and the Wheatfield, fences, and scenes of nature on the Battlefield. The photos will stimulate reflection in the reader.

I found Kent Gramm's poems fit the texts well and helped me think about the Battle, but they are uneven in quality. (I had much the same reaction to his earlier book mentioned above.) On occasion, the poetry diverted my attention from the images. The poetry is accessible and eloquent but I don't think it would stand up well on its own. Gramm writes in a variety of forms and appears particularly attracted to the sonnet. There is a series of eight poems presented as variations of the 23d Psalm (pp. 47 --61) Here is one of Gramm's poems I enjoyed, placed appropriately by a fog-shrouded photograph of Robert E. Lee on the Virginia Monument on Seminary Ridge. (pp. 14-15)

You mortals craning necks down there below,
if but this stone could make you understand:
it is more painful than you'll ever know
to wear your doubt and faith. I was a man.

There are few books which take a significant and much-discussed historical event and use art and poetry in a way that encourages meditation on questions of meaning. Heisey and Gramm encourage the reader to take this direction.

5 out of 5 stars Gettysburg: This Hallowed Ground.......2004-08-02

This Hallowed Ground is unlike any other Civil War book I have read. This book combines exquisite photos of the Gettysburg battlefield along with dramatic and inspiring poetry. While most Civil War books describe an event, This Hallowed Ground provides the reader with the opportunity to reflect on the events that occurred in Gettysburg during a most troubling time in our nation's history. If you are looking for a book where you can look at the photos, read the poetry and simply close your eyes to envision and reflect on the event that occurred, then this is the book for you. Simply inspiring.

1 out of 5 stars New Nonsense from the Nabob of Narcissism.......2004-06-29

Chris Heisey's pictures are indeed attractive, but their quality is undercut by the self-important posturing of Kent Gramm and his poetry selections. After an earlier book featured his grocery list (literally) in the text, it is impossible to read his work seriously. For $19.95, buy a real book on Gettysburg; there are plenty, and you'll actually learn something. Unless, of course, you have "money to burn...."

5 out of 5 stars GETTYSBURG: THIS HALLOWED GROUND.......2004-06-22

The epic portrayal of America's ghastly battle is beautifully projected through the words and visionS of Dr. Gramm and Chris Heisey. One of the poems referring to "The Shooters Eye," is not only meaningful to history, but it is also a description of Chris Heisey.

A spirituality for God, human life, and a respect of the men and women of America is found to be a common ground between this pair of artists. I found the photos to be gripping, powerful, and of enduring strength.

Gettysburg, a place that obviously calls to these men, a place that is haunted and is a reminder of a nation divided, a place that so many can still hear the withering barrage of artillery and musket fire, is above all a place of great beauty and serenity.

I highly recommend this book.

"In Making the Irish American, editors J.J. Lee and Marion R. Casey have compiled an illustrated 700-page volume that traces the history of the Irish in the United States and shows the impact America has had on its Irish immigrants and vice versa. The book's 29 articles deal with various aspects of Irish-American life, including labor and unions, discrimination, politics, sports, entertainment and nationalism, as well as the future of Irish America. Among the contributors are Calvin Trillin, Pete Hamill, Daniel Patrick Moynihan and the editors."

”This will be a valued reference book for many years to come.”
—TheWildGeese.com

"This massive volume, copublished with Glucksman Ireland House at NYU, covers the Americanization of the Irish in 29 chapters. Eileen Reilly takes a comprehensive, albeit sanitized, look at the history of Ireland up to the present, covering everything from famine to the Good Friday accords. One thing that stands out is the remarkable misogynistic burden that Eamon DeValera's policies placed on Irish women (a married woman could not teach, and the government seemed to have a vested interest in her sexual habits, even through the 1980s). As the Irish inundated America during the Great Famine, we see them crawl up the ladder of success with the help of the 'Ubiquitous Bridget,' the indispensable Irish maids whose work spanned two centuries. Novelist Peter Quinn looks at 'Irish progress from Paddies to Pats.' The importance of labor unions in the rise of the Irish into the middle class is documented, as well as how, through battle in two world wars, the Irish finally earned their acceptance as nonhyphenated Americans, capped off by John F. Kennedy's election as president in 1960. This extremely thorough, thoughtful volume covers all the Irish bases up to the present."
—Publishers Weekly

”thoroughly researched yet easy-to-read...”
—ForeWord Magazine

Featuring 29 classic and original essays on the turbulent, vital, and fascinating story of the Irish in America. The contributors include Linda Dowling Almeida, Margaret Lynch-Brennan, Marion R. Casey, David Noel Doyle, Pete Hamill, Kevin Kenny, Rebecca S. Miller, Mick Moloney, Daniel Patrick Moynihan, Peter Quinn, and Calvin Trillin.

All it takes is one St. Patrick's Day in the United States to realize that the Irish did not dissolve into the melting pot, they took possession of it. Few other immigrant peoples have exerted such pervasive influence, have left so deep an impression, have made their values and concerns so central to the destiny of their new country.

In Making the Irish American, J.J. Lee and Marion R. Casey offer a feast of twenty-nine perspectives on the turbulent, vital, endlessly fascinating story of the Irish in America. Combining original research with reprints of classic works, these essays and articles extend far beyond a survey to offer a truly rich understanding of the Irish immigrant impact on America, and America's impact on the Irish immigrant.

Here the reader will find a brisk, compact history of Ireland itself, and a wide-ranging critique of Irish American historiography, as well as explorations of the multiple complications of religion, reflected in the fluctuating, and sometimes tempestuous, relations between Catholic and Protestant Irish and Scotch-Irish. The authors explore the various channels through which the Irish, men and women, have made their mark, from politics to labor organization, from domestic service to popular and traditional music, from sport to step dancing.

Classic reprints include Daniel Patrick Moynihan's study of the Irish in New York, Pete Hamill's memoir of President Kennedy—recollecting the responses around him in Belfast at the time of the assassination—Calvin Trillin's New Yorker profile of Judge James J. Comerford, long the iron-handed boss of New York's St. Patrick's Day parade, and Peter Quinn's meditations on the essence of Irish America, past, present and future. They all offer sparkling insights into the evolving tension between becoming American and becoming Irish American.

Making the Irish American is monumental in the best sense—serious but accessible, wide-ranging and far-reaching and enriched by seventy unique illustrations. This exciting and challenging collection belongs on the bookshelf of everyone interested in not only the Irish American, but the American story, of which they form so vivid and prominent a part.

5 out of 5 stars collected essays go into all areas of Irish American heritage and accomplishments.......2006-03-08

Of the 29 articles, nine have been previously published; one in 1963, another in 1988, and the others in the past seven or so years. Some authors are widely-known--Daniel Patrick Moynihan, Pete Hamill, Calvin Trillin; while the others are steeped in Irish traditions from heritage and academic or other professional positions. The collected articles are crossovers between popular interest and academic perspective. Most combine popular subjects and approach with historical documentation or data. Within major sections on Irish-American foundations and identity are articles on sports, music, religion, organizations, and the role of notably, in some cases somewhat stereotypical, Irish figures such as domestics known as "biddies" or firemen in Irish-American assimilation and as representative of Irish-Americans in general. For the astute editorial selection of the number of general and somewhat specialized articles, expertise of the authors, and documentation in articles and appendices plus notes and bibliographies, "Making the Irish American" is a major text tying together this field of ethnic studies with American history and social history.

5 out of 5 stars A great range for the interested reader, makes a great gift.......2006-02-11

I got this book for my Irish-American dad for his birthday and it turned out to be the perfect pick-- for both of us. The chapters from the various contributors covered a large range of topics within Irish-American history and really got both of us interested in our Irish-American heritage.

My dad went straight to the highly accessible accounts of the Irish in American music, literature, entertainment, and particularly sports, but said he was most appreciative of the "Reflections" section's pieces by Pete Hamill, Calvin Trillin, and Peter Quinn, etc. He's yet to read the rest of the chapters, but he says he's enjoyed what he's read so much he's all the more inclined to read the rest of this 700-page giant book.

I had a different angle approaching the book: I started reading front-to-back and got a more academic experience. The intro to Irish history at the start really cleared up lots of holes in my knowledge of Irish history. The opening essays are more academic and I really appreciated them for their depth and obvious scholarship behind them.

Neither my father or I are done with the book, particularly since we're sharing it and it's so long, but I wanted to suggest the book to people looking to read engaging essays on Irish-American history.

I would highly suggest it to anyone else trying to find a gift for a relative of Irish-American descent, though obviously anyone interested in Irish-American history should get a lot out of this volume.

5 out of 5 stars Can't live without it........2006-05-30

This and it's companion book on Pathophysiology are the best investments I have made since entering medical school. The illustrations are great (and the diagrams set a standard that neither Guyton or Boron and Boulep can match) , but it's Silbernagl's presentation that makes them so amazing. I'm constantly finding new layers of information that I missed even after 4 or 5 passes. Buy Boron for this year's theories and break throughs, but this is the book you will be returning to.

5 out of 5 stars state-of-the-art.......2004-11-27

What makes this book a state-of-the-art is not its content, but the manner in which it's presented. Each subject only occupies one page of text, & opposite is a page for illustrations. But it's not the illustrations that explains the text, but rather the text that explains the illustrations (a method created by Leonardo da Vinci). This not only helps in recalling of the subject, but also helps in sustaining an interest in it. An ingenious beautiful book.

5 out of 5 stars SUPERB.......2004-11-14

Even considering that I am not a native english speaker, I found this book easier to understand than Guyton in spanish. Now that I teach physiology I use it to remember concepts at a glance, and to better explain concepts (a good image comes in handy sometimes). I also have encouraged my students to get it, as it does not only make it easier to understand physiology, but also is very helpful in improving comprehension of medical english, which is a must nowadays. (how about that for a new use for this book!!!!!!)

I found it then to be easy to read and accurate in its detailed descriptions and illustrations of the cellular and molecular mechanism that are integral to Physiology. Over a decade later, I had a chance to evaluate the 5th (English) edition. The authors and publishers remained true to their original objective, which was to produce a concise, well written and well illustrated pocket-size textbook of Medical Physiology. I have enjoyed what I had a chance to read of this edition and I highly recommend it to all students of Physiology.

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful illustrations.......2001-01-21

This book is really not a book but a pictionary. The text not only falls short, but is actually full of false statements and wrong proofs. However, nobody buys it for the text, they buy it for the illustrations. If you have a real core textbook and Agamemnons color atlas next to you, you can't fail Physiology. And this make it worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars Concise pathophysiology review.......2006-06-26

A good book for brief intro into pathophysiology, or as a review for those needing a quick review. Not too in depth, nor currently (2006) up to date, but gives a taste of what pathophysiologis about. Also ties in some of the molecular markers into the text. The best part however are the pictures ... a synopsis at a glimps.

5 out of 5 stars Medical Student.......2002-11-19

Great book to accompany study of pathophys. Although not complete, its atlas format with charts, pictures and diagrams is great for recall of pathophys of disease and clinical manifestations. Taking notes on it while studying completes most of what you need. Great for the wards.

5 out of 5 stars Great quick reference for the pics!.......2001-10-16

As a Pathology resident, I love this book. When I'm reading in Robbins and a picture isn't given for an entity, or I want to see more, and bigger, examples of something, I just flip this book open. It isn't meant to be a stand alone text, but the pics are awesome and are a great supplement to any text.

3 out of 5 stars plenty images, too clearly text.......2000-07-15

Milikowski et Berman's Atlas has a lot of full-coloured images(over 1000 images!), taken at microscopic level. Although every image has text for explanation, it is so simply written(20-30 words) that it is not easy for me, a beginner at histo-pathology, to understand well.

    Book Description

Why shouldn't people who deplete our natural assets have to pay, and those who protect them reap profits? Conservation-minded entrepreneurs and others around the world are beginning to ask just that question, as the increasing scarcity of natural resources becomes a tangible threat to our own lives and our hopes for our children. The New Economy of Nature brings together Gretchen Daily, one of the world's leading ecologists, with Katherine Ellison, a Pulitzer-prize winning journalist, to offer an engaging and informative look at a new "new economy" -- a system recognizing the economic value of natural systems and the potential profits in protecting them.

Through engaging stories from around the world, the authors introduce readers to a diverse group of people who are pioneering new approaches to conservation. We meet Adam Davis, an American business executive who dreams of establishing a market for buying and selling "ecosystem service units;" John Wamsley, a former math professor in Australia who has found a way to play the stock market and protect native species at the same time; and Dan Janzen, a biologist working in Costa Rica who devised a controversial plan to sell a conservation area's natural waste-disposal services to a local orange juice producer. Readers also visit the Catskill Mountains, where the City of New York purchased undeveloped land instead of building an expensive new water treatment facility; and King County, Washington, where county executive Ron Sims has dedicated himself to finding ways of "making the market move" to protect the county's remaining open space.

Daily and Ellison describe the dynamic interplay of science, economics, business, and politics that is involved in establishing these new approaches and examine what will be needed to create successful models and lasting institutions for conservation. The New Economy of Nature presents a fundamentally new way of thinking about the environment and about the economy, and with its fascinating portraits of charismatic pioneers, it is as entertaining as it is informative.

5 out of 5 stars Both a business and environmental book.......2003-11-06

The New Economy Of Nature: The Quest To Make Conservation Profitable is both a business and environmental book. Gretchen C. Daily and Katherine Ellison study the ways that human self-interest can be harnessed to protect Mother Earth, as pure philanthropy combined with government regulations simply are not enough by themselves to stand against naked human greed and unchecked commercial exploitation. From crises in biodiversity, to issues of the stratosphere, The New Economy Of Nature cogently draws upon ideas, examples, and situations worldwide to lend hope for the cause of financially motivated conservation. The New Economy Of Nature is an important contribution to Environmental Studies and highly recommended reading for anyone seeking to operating a successful commercial venture through making conservation profitable.
