Book Description

The book tells of Gen. MacArthur, one of America's greatest generals, and the events that placed him in the unprecedented role of conqueror, statesman, and humanitarian - taking on the task of destroying an enemy's war making capability and instituting a democratic nation dedicated to peace. The core of the book is from the General's own writings, touching on the significant actions, reforms and challenges of the Occupation of Japan. It also includes excerpts from other prominent American and Japanese writers which expand and confirm our understanding of these fascinating times. The author adds overviews and anecdotes, giving the reader a sense of realism and color not found in historical treatments. The book is an easy to read narrative which moves from one of the world's greatest tragedies to one of the greatest success stories in the history of these two mighty nations. It is well illustrated with 39 photographs and extensive captions to explain and highlight the story.

5 out of 5 stars A Pleasurable Memory Enhancer.......2000-05-28

David Valley's book, "Gaigin Shogun ..," is great fun and an easy read. At the same time it makes you think about things you may not have thought about before. I never realized how much of the Japanese miracle recovery was attributable to the manner in which the occupational forces governed Japan after the war. Also the excerpts of the writings by MacArthur made the message crisp and believable. It leaves one in awe of MacArthur, and feeling that he may have been one of the most under appreciated hero's of our past. Valley did a fine job. Definitely worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars Gaijin Showgun.......2000-04-21

The author did an excellent job in pointing out the accomplishments of General Douglas MacArthur in Japan. I, also, was one of the General's Honor Guard. David and I went over events during of our tours of duty both before and after the author's assignment of how MaArthur was bringing the Japanese back into the United Nations fold as an upstanding nation. I was delighted to read what he had written , but how well he had written it.

When we compared notes, it became amazing to each of us how slowly the progress was at first. Perhaps, items such as the Marshall Plan and Harry Bridges "Long Shoremans strike" that lasted for over seventeen months. Nobody saw a real potatoe for over six months. Not that anyone suffered for it. Japanese national progress did accelerated over the following short years.

The personal climate to all of us including Mrs MacArthur was that we were unafraid to walk among the Japanese from the very first moments we where there at any time , day or night. There was seldom a case of anamosity shown. The Japanese were model citizens. This is a illustration of how well MacArthurs policies were performing.

The author was factual, brief and very accurate with details. He created each scene with actual quotations from the General about verbal discriptions. The General took all his problems in his stride. The resolve was contigious. When it came to authority, the author precisely depicted the attitudes and backgrounds of the British and the Russians and the worst party of all, our own State Department. He was candid. The General was skillful in his steps that he took. He had spent too much time in the houses of power to be careless with the heads of state and worse their correspondants.

In total, the book is a good comprehensive story of the General who did an extraordinary job of uplifting the country of a former enemy. After all his seventy years of preparation, his experience prepared him well for the task. It is noted that it has not been repeated since the reigns of Alexander the Great and Julis Ceasar.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating.......2000-04-20

I have read two other books on the General and listened to another on Books on Tape. Mr. Valley's book is easily the best, probably because he was really there not learning about it from a library. Brilliant insights and personal details fill this magnificent work. Get it! Enjoy it!

Book Description

During World War II, over 120,000 Japanese Americans were removed and confined four years in sixteen camps located throughout the western half of the United States. Yet the internment of Japanese Americans in concentration camps remains a largely unknown episode of World War II history. In these selections, Alice Yang Murray investigates the U.S. government's role in planning and carrying out the removal and internment of thousands of citizens, resident aliens, and foreign nationals, and the ways in which Japanese Americans coped with or resisted their removal and incarceration.

4 out of 5 stars A Valuable Resource On The American Internment.......2003-04-20

This Review refers to the paperback edition of "What Did the Internment of Japanese Americans Mean? (Historians at Work)", composed by Roger Daniels, Peter Irons, Michi Weglyn, Gary Y. Okihiro, and Valerie J. Matsumoto and as compiled by Alice Yang Murray.

Murray's book is a compilation of several selections from prominent scholars and authors concerning the plight of those of Japanese descent caught in the Americas during World War II. A brief introduction providing insights into the lives of the authors and several questions accompany each selection. There is also a brief historical background of the internment preceding the selections. Murray provides an extensive list of other works witch may aid the reader in further studies of the topics represented following the selections. The book contains the following excerpts by the following authors; "The Decision for Mass Evacuation" - Roger Daniels, "Gordon Hirabayashi v. United States: A Jap's a Jap" - Peter Irons, "Hostages" - Michi Weglyn, "Tule Lake under Martial Law: A Study in Japanese Resistance" - Gary Y. Okihiro, and "Amache" - Valerie J. Matsumoto.

Murray does an admirable job of portraying to the reader popular interpretations and general historical facts regarding the internment. The topics range from the constitutional laws broken by the internment, to the transfer of Latin Americans of Japanese descent to the United States so that the U.S. could barter them for Allied POWs. The book presents popular views of the Americans interned and their reactions to internment, giving the reader a well-rounded look at the current debate over the subject. Each selection is unique and proves invaluable in regards to understanding the internment and its implications on modern society.

Each literary style is quite original therefore denoting that each style will need proper review. Murray writes in an average style, creating places where the sentence structure can be somewhat awkward. The author periodically goes back and forth between present and past tense, but does do a good job of conveying the topic at hand. The compositional style Daniels uses is quite assertive and conveys a more radical tone, he also seems to generally dislike lawyers - often bringing this dislike into his work, causing the reader general annoyance. However he provides proof to back up his statements and uses an otherwise gripping literary style that keeps the reader interested. Irons writes in a very professional tone, and presents the topics without extreme biases resulting in a well-written work. Weglyn presents a descriptive work, which at times appears to have a bit of anger behind it. Okihiro is slightly vindictive, often targeting other prominent authors and dismissing their work as incorrect. He presents a rather compelling work, but his single mindedness taints it. Matsumoto is very open minded, relating to the reader the wide spectrum of opinion instead of the lone mindset promoted by other authors. However, she sometimes overuses some of her sources, which slightly detracts from the work.

"What Did the Internment of Japanese Americans Mean? (Historians at Work)" makes for an excellent introduction to the various facets of internment, but is not a precise work on any individual realm of the subject. Murray's work is a necessary overview and resource for anyone, both seasoned experts and casual readers, interested in one of the darkest chapters of American history.

LOTS of photos. Probably one of the best basic books. Most of the exercises can be found elsewhere, but the photos make it very clear what to do. I prefer this over the more wordy and significant books. If you want a lot of theory, this isn't your book. If you just want good clear instructions on what you can do (and the expected results), then this book is perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Buy This For Your Daughter!.......2007-05-07

As the father of two grown girls who won't sit still long enough to listen to what I consider common sense, I've gone beyond frustration with the way Brittany and Angela dress. Yes, they're now adults, but they do show up looking more than "odd" on occasion.

This seminar on CD is brief, smart, and to the point. I actually got both girls to listen to it, and (surprise) they liked the advice! The speaker allows flexibility and personal style, which is what my daughters want. Now they know how to dress with flair, but without embarrassing the entire family.

                            Nice job!

John Muir, Aldo Leopold, Bob Marshall, Rachel Carson, Edward Abbey, Marjory Stoneman Douglas ... these are the voices of a wild America. Sharing pages with the glorious works of National Geographic photographers, the voices of these important conservationists are immortalized in Visions of a Wild America. In this book, award-winning author Kim Heacox weaves the incredible adventures, epiphanies, and successes of these visionaries along with their own quotes to help round out their stories:

"It is not enough to understand the natural world; the point is to defend and preserve it."--Edward Abbey
"Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts."--Rachel Carson
"The last word in ignorance is the man who says of an animal or plant: 'What good is it?'... To keep every cog and wheel is the first precaution of intelligent tinkering."--Aldo Leopold
"Mountain parks ... are useful not only as fountains of timber and irrigating rivers, but as fountains of life."--John Muir

Juxtaposed against photos of camas flowers coated in frost, sandhill cranes' migrating silhouettes, autumn fog in a Maine spruce bog, astonishing waterfalls, moss curtains, and owl's eyes, these stories of determination and preservation have an especially powerful impact. --Kathryn True

                                Book Description

The American landscape: Its wildness has made us inventive. Its vastness has made us bold. Its great teachers -- concerned voices -- have told us who we are and where, in the presence or absence of wildness, we might go. Complemented by more than a hundred photographs that capture our nation's preserved places, the uncommon, remarkable adventures and quiet epiphanies of our great conservationists are rendered anew, creating hope that we might one day see the land as a community, not a commodity. A living place to be honored and preserved.
