Book Description

This exciting journey into this slice of true Americana begins with a foreword from Americas most beloved cowgirl, Dale Evans. Illustrated with more than 450 color photographs and historic images, COWGIRLS: Women of the Wild West pays tribute to the life and legacy of the pioneer woman in the American West, who worked on ranches, performed in Wild West shows, and competed in the rodeo arena.

The cowgirl appeared on the American frontier in the mid-1800s. She worked with stock alongside the cowboy and was a determined and spirited pioneer. Rancher Lorraine Plass, at age 87, epitomizes the cowgirl spirit: As long as the colt stays under me Ill do all right. I will get the job done.

In COWGIRLS, the author and photographer present the history of the cowgirl through a combination of compelling tales, illustrations of their gear, western art, and photography. In six chapters, COWGIRLS represents the years between 1880 and 1950, which include the migration of women to the West, the rodeo stars of the early twentieth century, the cowgirl images created by Hollywood, and unusual poster art. This colorful volume includes many photographs published for the first time and highlights the evolution of innovative cowgirl fashions. An important book for Western American collectors.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Book.......2007-06-09

I was very pleased with the content of this book, (since I bought it blindly!). Some great pictures and historical stories of some of the women that shaped "the old west". Great for anyone who loves cowgirls.

5 out of 5 stars Cowgirls: Women of the Wild West.......2007-01-14

This is a beautiful book. It is also very interesting giving new insight into the western riding and rodeo work of women over the last hundred or more years. The photographs and illustrations are very beautiful, not only of the riders and their horses but also of their tack and their clothes. The art in creating the patterns and designs that embelish the clothes and riding gear makes the book a visual delight while the text makes for really interesting reading. This is a first class gift for anyone who loves horses, in particular.

5 out of 5 stars Love Them Madly.......2006-02-10

This beautiful & astonishing book is an astonishing look at America's horse latitudes & its women, the best out west. Even better than the women of Cody's Wild West and the 101 are rodeo riders like Tillie Baldwin, a Viking princess with the heart of a Viking warrior in boots & chaps. The photo of Baldwin's Roman Ride at the Stampede in 1913 is worth every dollar & dime of the books cost and justifies every hour of effort that Elizabeth Flood spent in bringing her Cowgirls to publication.

5 out of 5 stars an amazing compilation.......2005-12-19

This book is the best ever compilation on the subject of women in the old west, real working cowgirls, show girls, hollywood cowgirls, etc. fabulous pictures and stories... this IS the best reference book on this subject currently available...

my only complaint would be of a personal nature, and that is I wish it had more on the bad girls of the wild west era... they only elaborated on three, Calamity Jane, Belle Star, and Pearl Hart.

5 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL BOOK !.......2003-12-17

Highly recommended! A perfect companion to Packing Iron and Cowboys. A real visual treat. Should be required reading in our schools. Buy it - you'll love it.

    Book Description

American lore has slighted the cowgirl, although at least one can still be found in nearly every ranching community. Like her male counterpart, she rides and ropes, understands land and stock, and confronts the elements. The writer and photographer Teresa Jordan traveled sixty thousand miles in the American West, talking with more than a hundred authentic cowgirls running ranches and performing in rodeos. The result is a fascinating book that also situates the cowgirl in history and literature. A new preface and updated bibliography have been added to this Bison Book edition.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful real ranch lives.......2000-03-10

I loved this book! It is so exciting to know that other ranch woman are living and doing the same kind of things that you are. I think that sometimes you feel alone and this book lets me know that i am not. I really related to a lot of what was in the book, and it made me want to do more in the ranching field and also to verify that ranch life is not "dead and gone". Teresa has such a wonderful and colorful way with words and really relates to the ranch woman, being raised as one herself. I highly recommed this book to anyone!

5 out of 5 stars Real Women - Real Life.......2000-02-14

This book really put life into perspective for me. As a woman rancher, I really felt a kinship with a lot of the women and found renewed strength and courage through their experiences. I realized how much I really enjoy what I do. My only regret is that I did not read this book earlier in my life. Ms. Jordan did an excellent job of capturing these women's spirit and drive. I was thankful that she updated the original verson and find myself still wantintg to know how these women are getting along. Just like they were personal friends. At times I found myself envious of her for getting to meet them. Even the bibliography was a joy to read and I found several books to add to my reading list. Thank you Teresa Jordan.

4 out of 5 stars Real women of the American West, not Hollywood!.......1999-08-24

Each chapter contains a photo and a unique and interesting interview with a real woman of the west, ranchers, cowgirls, young and old alike. Every night, after my own chores were done, I'd read about another woman, who like me, loved hard work, the outdoors, and animals. It was like visiting with a new friend, some I liked more than others, but all of us similar in some way. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and want to read more like it.

      Book Description

When the town of Pendleton, Oregon, held its first large-scale rodeo, it introduced a new kind of rodeo queen—not a traveling cowgirl performer but a young, middle-class woman from its own town. Riding Pretty examines the history, evolution, and significance of the community-sponsored rodeo queen, from the introduction of this new phenomenon at the 1910 Pendleton Round-Up to the advent of Miss Rodeo America in 1956, and places the main theme—connection of queens to community—within the context of the evolution of rodeo as a spectator sport and the changing concepts of gender relations in the American West.

The model for community-sponsored rodeo queens that originated in Pendleton gradually spread to other rodeos throughout the West, giving young women the opportunity to participate both in rodeo and in their communities. From 1910 to 1956, the community-sponsored rodeo queen’s role expanded, both in terms of her responsibilities and in terms of the community she represented, local, regional, and national. While each community adapted the rodeo queen phenomenon to suit the characteristics of its own celebration, the main characteristics of the role remained: the rodeo queen as a symbol of the local rodeo and as a metaphor for western women.

Poor Dale Evans. America's best-known cowgirl sweetheart didn't have much of a chance to spit, cuss, swagger, snap her neck bronco-busting, or even muss her hair. The gritty frontier cowgirls and athletic rodeo riders and performers lauded in this colorful melange of photos, posters, quotes, and snappy histories did all that and a great deal more. Clearly, the life agreed with many of them. "This is a deuced fast place," one reports approvingly. "Most independent women I've ever seen." Happily, that independence was rewarded by several Western states with the right to vote, hold property, divorce, and--just as important--the chance to ride astride.

5 out of 5 stars The cowgirl's contribution to the women of the modern west........1998-10-21

Chandace Savage's COWGIRLS will become a classic in Western Literature. In her three divisions: Real Cowboy Girls, Living Legends, and Rhinestone Cowgirls, Savage passes through the realities and myths of cowgirldom. From the brutal work of the lonesome ranches and cattle trails through the grace of the rodeo arena, and the beauty of the silver screen she shows the contribution of the cowgirl to the women of the modern west. But it is a west far greater than even the western ranch community and its celluloid imitators, it is a west of the soul influencing the strength, courage and leadership of women today.

I bought this on a whim at the Dollar Store and never looked back. With phrases such as the above, Belle and Calamity give voice to a ton of very feminine and very valid concerns - in fact, I've 'bitch-sessioned' some of those very same comments myself with gal pals. Fun. Thought-provoking. Some things made me laugh. Others made me cry. The illustrations fit the tone of the book - tough, wildly feminine, yet curiously private. A wonderful book.

      5 out of 5 stars What a find!.......1999-02-25

I don't know if finding this at the dollar store is good or bad overall... definitely added to its charm. Either way, this is a great book: just enough pop-culture refs (Thelma & Louise, Elvis,..) and southwestern kitsch without overdoing it, while still having something genuine to say undermeath. The Warhol-esque illustrations are great. Great for all ages (read : not just acceptable, GREAT)

          Book Description

Here is a thorough examination of nations past and present, their relationship to God, and whether that nation stood or not. It's amazing that God's promises from the Bible still hold true, and those nations which have rejected Him have ultimately fallen.

          5 out of 5 stars A far-reaching, timely book.......2003-06-16

This is an incredible work. Dr. Morris has provided a treasure of clear, concise explanations concerning the nations of the world while at the same time providing nothing less than a theological masterpiece.

Dr. Morris' years of study concerning biblical creation, the flood, the book of Job, and other areas has culminated in a work that produces timely instruction for a population living at the precipice of Christ's coming.

A highly readable, and enjoyable text which can be read in just a few evenings. Prepare to use a highlighter in this one: there are a lot of fascinating points.

5 out of 5 stars God, the Bible and CNN.......2003-05-19

I like to spend a significant amount of my evenings reading the Bible and watching CNN. I also read many religious and secular books. Knowing Morris writings for several years, I've decided to order this from Amazon.com.

Yes, I am a product of brand of late post-modernism that tries to value at once both the reason of modernity and religion of pre-modernity, by connecting directly to the source of true knowledge and wisdom, Jesus Christ, simply through Bible reading and prayer. He is the LOGOS, the creator of space, matter/energy, time, life, mind and reason.

What does this have to do with the book "God and the Nations"? A lot, in my view. By reading the Bible, I became convinced that History has a begining and an end. What's more, there is a pattern in History, a sign of rational and moral design. So far, there is nothing new with this insight. Hegel and Marx would say the same thing. Francis Fukuyama would probably agree.

Historians have long realized that to understand History we cannot rely simply on political history, but we have also to take in to account social, economic and cultural history. I agree, although even this enlarged perspective seems to be insuficient. To understand History, we have to take in to account the presence of a divine providence in History (As someone put it, History is His Story). Other wise, we won't understand it. Even Samuel Huntington's "clash of civililations" is not able to account for what is going on in the world today.

With his characteristic lucidity and above average intelligence, Henry Morris leads us to the identification of the spiritual patterns in the emergence, decline and death of nations. My reading of the Bible has led me to pretty much the same conclusions, although I think that God cares also a lot about questions of justice and the environment that Morris somehow seems to overlook.

Anyway, it seems pretty clear from the Bible that God indeed judges the nations according to the way they deal with His Word, His mandates, His People of Israel and His Son. I agree.

As a Portuguese, I cannot help to notice that the emergence of our nation was closely linked to the defense of christianity in Iberian Peninsula, and that our times of historical glory coincided with the spread of the christian message. Of course we did lots of shameful and sinful acts in between, and we face God's discipline, as does any nation. It is interesting that a few decades after we expelled the Jews (around 1494), we lost our independence to Spain, and we lost our naval fleet, along with the Spanish, when the Spanish Armada was defeated in 1588.

Morris could have mentioned this, although he doesn't go this far. England and Holland, that were far more hospitable to the Jews and to the protestant reformation became the leading naval powers. All historians recognize that the defeat of the Spanish armada was instrumental to the progress of the christian reformation.

Another decisive point in human history, was the defeat of the Habsburg Catholic pretensions in 1648, after the Thirty Years War, and the Peace of Westphalia, whose art. 28º for the first time mentioned the right to "free exercise of religion" and paved the way to the liberal revolutions and to american constitucionalism.

The I World War was also very important to assure a western mandate over Palestine, and the II World War marked the begining of end of the jewish gentile dominium, which will only come to an end when Israel assumes control of the Temple Mount.

CNN tels the rest of the story, with the latest developments in Iraq and the war against terrorism, both instances where hatred to God, His People and His Son provide the relevant background.

I must admit that I have dificulties whith eschatology in general and the book of Revelation in particular. I've followed Morris on this topic with special caution. I didnt' clearly understand the future role of America, although I got some bad feelings about it. Morris position on the death penalty also raises some doubts. A criminal defendant has a right to a fair trial and to a proportional punishment. The death penalty is, undoubtly, proportional to a crime of homicide. No one can claim more rights to hemself than the rights he is willing to respect in others. However, it should be aplied only if the criminal system can assure a truly fair trial...
Morris' diagnostic and proposed remedies, as simple and naive as they may seem to be to much of the "sofisticated" audience of CNN or to the readers of Time Magazine or Foreign Affairs, are right on target.

          Book Description

I think, therefore I am. The legendary pronouncement of philosopher René Descartes lingers as accepted wisdom in the Western world nearly four centuries after its author's death. But does thought really come first? Who actually runs the show: we, our thoughts, or the neurons firing within our brains?

Walter J. Freeman explores how we control our behavior and make sense of the world around us. Avoiding determinism both in sociobiology, which proposes that persons' genes control their brains' functioning, and in neuroscience, which posits that their brains' disposition is molded by chemistry and environmental forces, Freeman charts a new course -- one that gives individuals due credit and responsibility for their actions.

Drawing upon his five decades of research in neuroscience, Freeman utilizes the latest advances in his field as well as perspectives from disciplines as diverse as mathematics, psychology, and philosophy to explicate how different human brains act in their chosen diverse ways. He clarifies the implications of brain imaging, by which neural activity can be observed during the course of normal movements, and shows how nonlinear dynamics reveals order within the fecund chaos of brain function.

This book, although clearly on a very interesting subject, is extremely difficult to read. It is not organized in clear chapters, the writing more like streams of consciousness than organized thought. Very disappointed.

1 out of 5 stars nothing concrete to grab on to.......2004-06-28

I found this short little book to be wordy, murky and unclear. No one knows how thought/meaning is conveyed in the brain. Freeman suggests that chaos, transistions, and repeating patterns have something to do with memory, learning and meaning, and that context is important, but so what. Those ideas have been suggested before, and I didn't find any highly compelling new arguments, either theoretical or experimental, in support for how or why these particular ideas should be correct. There are some interesting tidbits here and there when he explains some experiments in the field.

In this book, Prof. Freeman is trying to resolve a very difficult problem : if my brain operates as mechanically as a car, then how can I be free to make choices and be responsible for my decisions ? He makes a detail ( lengthy ) presentation on his proposed solution. Unfortunately, after reading the whole book, I think he fails to provide a clear answer to the question.

His main idea is that there is an important difference between human brain and other substances in the universe such as a car. The brain is a complicated nonlinear system and capable of self-organization. It does not respond directly to incoming stimuli like a reflex action, but it is continuously changing and constructing its own neural activity patterns in order to adapt to and synchronize with the external stimuli. The active involvement of the brain can be seen from the fact that we won't interpret the world as moving backward when we know we are walking on a street. This self-awareness and the real-time interactions between the brain and the environment form what he called the circular causality. He concludes that a behaviour comes from the final decision of the brain itself who therefore bears the responsibility.

However, I find that what he is talking about is how the brain works ( yes, the title of the book is correct ), but it doesn't follow that the nature+nurture determinism is wrong. Of course our decision depends on our history ( memory and experience ), but we should ask what then the history depends on ? Genetic makeup and continuous stimuli from environment are the only factors or sources that cause people different from each other, while chaos and self-organization are just the mechanism within ( the laws of nonlinear dynamics are universal ). As a result I consider his circular causality as a misleading myth, at least he has ignored the initial condition : genes.

Although I disagree with Prof. Freeman's idea, I respect him as the greatest neuroscientist in our times. Readers can find more of his information from his website at U C Berkeley...

4 out of 5 stars Interesting combination of neuroscience, philosophy and math.......2001-08-27

This is one of several books in the last couple of years written by leading neuroscientists attempting to explain consciousness. Outstanding examples are Damasio's "The Feeling of What Happens" and Edelman and Tononi's "A Universe of Consciousness," which are both very worthwhile reading. Freeman takes a different tack, based on his years of research into the olfactory system. Though this short book appears to be aimed at the educated layman, many will be stopped short in their tracks by his "ten building blocks" of "how neural populations sustain the chaotic dynamics of intentionality," such as the ever-popular #8, "Attenuation of microscopic sensory-driven activity and enhancement of mesoscopic amplitude modulation patterns by divergent-convergent cortical projections underlying solipsm." These ten statements form the core of the book, and although they are ultimately explained with some degree of clarity, I found myself wishing for more specific examples from the neuroscientific literature beyond the very limited samples provided, which tended to be either very basic circuit diagram type drawings, or taken from his work in the olfactory system. I did find the application of chaos theory to brain dynamics fascinating, though for a critique of Freeman's approach and an alternative view see the article by Laurent et al in the 2001 Annual Review of Neuroscience. Overall, though, I found the book a stimulating and interesting read.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting new ideas and some valuable information.......2001-07-10

Freeman wraps up a long history (30 years, I believe) as a neurophysiologist with a good general overview of some interesting information and philosophy. The book starts with a general overview of the brain, using a salamander's brain structure as the building block from which to start the discussion.

Freeman's main area of study revolves around the olfactory sense which is not a very common area within the "mainstream" of currently in-vogue neural work. This might explain why his views are rather different from many of his colleagues as well as those who stand on the "edge" of the whole mind-brain debate such as the Churchlands and Dennett.

Freeman details how we usually represent problems in a linear fashion and how this type of philosophy is not at all appropriate for the study of the nervous system. Freeman does a great job of delving into circular causality (feedback systems) and why this naturally leads to some interesting conclusions about the interrelationship of the brain and mind.

Freeman refers to himself as a "pragmatist" in the book although I found this to be a bit confusing based on some of his views. He is clear that he is not a materialist (like the Churchlands and Searle) but also not a dualist (such as Penrose and Chalmers) but I think he should have gone a further step and really stepped outside of the constraint of calling himself a "pragmatist".

He has some good and easy-to-digest information about chaotic systems and how they tend to seek islands of stability (that is, there is emergent order in a sea of unpredictability) but he never really gets down to the nitty and gritty of tackling how the physical realm ultimately manages to link causally to the mental. Tallis' book has some better leads on this "problem" and it would be interesting if these two and Austin ("Zen and the Brain") could get together to discuss some ideas.

All in all a pretty good read that won't hurt anyone who doesn't have a background in science. But we have a long way to go understanding the "hard problem" still...
