Book Description
An overview of scholarly research, both published and previously unpublished, on the history of a city that has often served as a case study for measuring social change. It synthesizes the literature and assesses how that knowledge relates to our broader understanding of the processes of urbanization and urbanism.
This book is especially useful for undergraduate and graduate courses on environmental politics and policy making, or as a supplement for courses on public policy making generally.

Eishyshok, in Lithuania, was for nine centuries a center of Jewish life in Eastern Europe, where Jews lived "under all the various governments that had fought for control of it: Lithuanian, Polish, German, Russian, and Soviet." But as a result of the Holocaust, writes Eishyshok native Yaffa Eliach in this rich, vastly detailed history, "nearly a millennium of vibrant Jewish life had been reduced to stark images of victimization and death." Eliach offers his chronicle by way of a memorial to those lost citizens and their disappeared history, working through archives, family photo albums, and the memories of survivors. It is a fine and fitting memorial indeed, one that ranks alongside the important work of Raul Hilberg and Lucy Dawidowicz. --Gregory McNamee

Polish and Lithuanian denials.......2006-10-01
I feel renewed horror that, to this day, Polish and Lithuanian reviewers use this format to try to deny their participation in the murder of the Jews who lived in Eishyshok and all over Poland.. even blame the victims. They murdered Jews, stole their property, and beat, murdered, and intimidated Jews who survived the holocaust and tried to return to their homes, tried to reclaim any small portion of their property. I am disgusted by the cowardliness of those naysayers and blamers who try to pass their crimes off onto the victims even to this day, further abusing people that they killed or helped kill and who are unable to defend themselves.
a lost world that lives in the soul of all jews..........2002-02-02
In her very detailed and extensive account of life in a jewish market town of Eastern Europe, the author gives a vivid glimpse of the daily life, emotions and longings of its members. A real interesting book that transports us to the middle of a vibrant community that lived, cried, and smiled during all their history until the bitter end.
A must read for anyone intereste in the jewish culture and it's ethos.
An important and moving book........2001-11-21
This meticulously researched book chronicles the 900-year-old settlement of Eishyshok, a center of culture and tradition that was virtually extinguished by the Holocaust. Rather than focus on the terrible end, the author has endeavored to revive the town and its inhabitants through salvaged photographs, narratives, and history gathered over many years of travel and research. The author has produced a moving and well documented book that serves history while respecting and memorializing the individual people who gave the town its spirit. I have to doubt the motives of those who are using this review space to disect the author's own life and memories, which are not the subject of this book.
Gone but not fogotten.............2001-11-12
This book is extremely well written and Yaffa's research superb. The story itself is very topical at the moment and like Jan Gross' book "Neighbours', it will probably draw the attention of Poles, Lithuanians etc around the world who wish to deny that their people had anything to do with the slaughter of Jews in the holocaust. The story covers pretty much all aspects of life for the Jews of Eishyshok for the past 900 years up until the Nazis destroyed the community together with the help of their Lithuanian, Polish and Latvian aids. This book is definately worth reading and with the many photographs in the book, you come to develop a close affiliation with the people. Do read it, it is certainly extremely thorough.
Yaffa the Historian Versus Yaffa the Storyteller?.......2001-09-29
Having read this book, I don't quite know what to make of it. On one hand, she gives a tremendous amount of detail, including photographs, in showing the reader what life was like in the shtetl at Eisyshok. Not only does one learn about the rites of passage in shtetl life, but one also learns such seldom-discussed topics as the care of the mentally ill, and the treatment of converts to and from Judaism. She expresses sadness that the shtetl is gone (whence her title, There Once Was a World), but on the other hand one must remember that the Jews now have their own homeland, something which was only a distant dream (if that) for the centuries of Jews who lived in Eishyshok. I find it ironic to hear her defenders denounce the fact that her father, Moishe Sonenson, was a communist collaborator, in view of the fact that he is quoted, towards the end of her very book, as protesting his exile to Siberia in view of all of the work he did on behalf of the Soviet communists! Other things she writes are not so clear, and, forgive me if I find it hard to believe them. Can we seriously believe that her parents' killers, so observant that they noticed a scratch on the floor, suddenly forgot that little Jaffa might still be alive under her mother Zipporah's body? Or that there might be others hiding in the attic-closet? And who, especially under the trauma of a killing in action, counts and remembers the number of bullets fired by the assailants? Furthermore, after the killings of much of her family, she says that the Poles might come back to mutilate the bodies. Can we seriously suppose that a guerilla group would take the risk of a succeeding military operation just to mutilate bodies? These and other statements of hers do not seem to partake of reality.

Proof- not just for mathematics.......2006-05-02
There are a number of errors in this textbook, not just in the end-of-chapter review problems, but also in the chapter Examples that are meant to explain them. This does little to allow students to quickly and easily grasp the material.
The writing style makes an interesting novel but a lousy textbook. Material is presented by giving an example, history and finally the scientific concept meant to be grasped. Makes for a great mystery, but this is science and a subject that scares students anyway. A concept given first is seldom followed by a thorough explanation. The effect is one of an author, who know his material really well, has no idea how to convey the basics to his readers and is trying hard to entertain. Combine this with the smattering of factual errors and this textbook is just annoying.
Great for understanding all that is "Chemistry".......2003-12-19
Chemistry can be interesting and it can be difficult to understand. This book addresses both of these areas quite well. This is a book that you study from, as well as read. For anyone who is preparing to take a Chemistry class, this book is well worth investigating, because this book, in its 20 Chapters, covers every principle, formula, idea, and topic that will be covered in class. My CHEM 100 course used this as our text, and we covered only half of the book (at a Community College in Maryland). I learned a lot from the course and from this book. I heartedly recommend it! For grandmom to read on your drive to DisneyWorld???? Oh, maybe not. Especially if she's driving.
Best of the liberal arts texts.......2000-06-29
There are two people that would be interested in this book - those that are enrolled in a liberal arts chemistry course, and those that are just interested in learning about chemistry. This book suits either type of person admirably.
While setting up a liberal arts course in chemistry (i.e., Chemistry for Non-science Majors), we previewed a number of possible texts. This one, in my mind, stood above all the others that I looked at. There are a number of reasons why:
1. The scope - this book covers a vast number of topics, from basic structure of the atom to environmental chemistry to toxins and drugs to combustion and energy. We are designing a survey course, and this spread is ideal. Other texts tended to focus too much, especially on environmental issues (e.g., the ACS's Chemistry in Context).
2. Descriptive, non-mathmatical. Since this course has no prerequisites, not even grade 10 math, we needed a book that minimised mathematics. Other books, such as Kelter/Carr/Scott's Chemistry: World of Choices, was too mathematical for this type of course.
3. The pictures - this book simply looks good.
Thus, if you're looking for a text for a liberal arts chemistry course, or if you just want to know more about chemistry and are not mathematically inclined, I would recommend this book.

Book Description
Regarded by many as the best such book for any state, Virginia's Endangered Species is an attractive and up-to-date reference book on the rare and vulnerable plants and animals of Virginia. For each species identified the following information is provided: a description of the taxon; a written summary and a map of its distribution in Virginia and North America; an overview of its natural history; a synopsis of its legal and recommended statuses; a discussion of threats to its continued survival in Virginia; and recommendations for its conservation. Color plates (229) illustrate most described taxa.
The volume will be of value to scientists, educators, librarians, environmentalists, planners, attorneys, and all others who are involved with or concerned about the conservation of rare plants and animals. Its relevance is not limited to Virginia, but extends to throughout the middle Atlantic and middle Appalachian regions. This book has been named the Outstanding Book for 1992 by the Southeastern Section of The Wildlife Society and a notable government publication by the American Library Association.

This book provides fast, accurate information for any individual or group interested in conservation. Of particular value is the location identification and present U.S. and State ratings of individual species. A must book for all environmental groups engaged in denfensive habitat protection.

fascinating, but a little bit rambling.......2004-08-13
This book is a fascinating 300 page message to the public that if the Cheasapeake Bay, a long sufferer of pollution and overharvesting, is to survive as both a marketable commodity and a landmark of the southeast, many changes must be put into place. Horton explains many interwoven factors contributing to the bay's problems, including nitrogen, phosphorus pollution (from farm fertilizers), sediment pollution (which clouds water and suffocates underwater grasses), overfishing, and sprawl development. It was really interesting to see how all these parts were the sum of a greater equation, and gets you to think how something simple you do everyday and take for granted really could have an effect on something miles away (hairspray, anyone?). The one thing I didn't like though is that a lot of the information was repeated (probably intentional to stress his points) and you could pretty much get the gist of the book before you were halfway done. But overall, a very solid, eyeopening, and unflinchingly LIBERAL book!

Factual; complete; good introduction to an endangered specie.......1998-09-02
I serve as the Chief of Resource Education at Badlands National Park, one of the few sites in North America that has had black-footed ferrets reintroduced. This book has good information and provides children between the ages of 8 and 12 with a good introduction to this extremely rare mammal species. It is a bit dated as the black-footed ferret recovery program continues; however, it is still a good reference.

The Sea Otter.......2001-11-12
I am 13 and in the 8th grade. We had to read a nonfiction book for a science book report and I chose this one! It was very interesting and easy to read. It took me about an hour to read it. I found all the information very useful! SOmething I found useful was the facts about sea otters at the end.....it summarized the basic info from the book which made the report very easy to wrrite! Usually I come to amazon.com to find the book cover so I cna print it out for my posterboard, and was very disappointed that there was not one for this book....other than that i really love amazon.com. I think kids would enjoy this book becasue although it has facts it is not boring! So but the book and read it! I also thought it was very good that they had enviromental issues included in the book!

This book is a good source for younger readers.......1999-05-19
This book is a good source for young readers to learn about the wondrous creatures that are manatees. The book is extrememly informative, and the illustrations far surpass any other I have ever seen. As an enviromentalist, I strongly reccommend encouraging any and all children you know to read this and other books about manatees, their endangerment, and protection efforts.
