    Book Description

This innovative book provides an incisive critique of well-established positions in postcolonial theory and a dramatic expansion in the range of interpretative tools available. Peter Hallward gives substantial readings of four significant writers whose work invites, to varying degrees, a singular interpretation of postcolonialism: Edouard Glissant, Charles Johnson, Mohammed Dib, and Severo Sarduy. Using a singular interpretation of postcolonialism is central to the argument this book makes, and to understanding the postcolonial paradigm.

"The wisdom of the Egyptians was a proverb with the Greeks, who felt themselves children beside this ancient race." Plato, Timaeus, 22B, (Quoted from Will Durant, the Story of civilization:I)

    Early Civilizations:
As summarized by Will Durant, the development of agriculture helped people to settle in villages and create communities, where the early civilizations gradually developed. Ancient people developed their specialized trades, arts, and crafts, establishing an economy based on trade, which led to the first civilizations. Since there were but few written records, as in the case of ancient Egypt, archaeologists have patiently recreated the history of the first civilizations by putting together artifacts and studying ruins which have been discovered over time. A cardinal characteristic of civilizations was that each had a leader, ruler, priests, and civil administrators. It has been discovered also that early civilizations were tinted by a class system of rich and poor people. First great civilizations were built around rivers, which were crucial to their development, and became a catalyst for the growth of agricultural civilization.

    The Humanistic Tradition:
This colorful work is a thoughtful, methodical topical approach to the first classical civilizations that helps not only humanity students but all seekers of common global experience understand humanity's creative traditions as a continuum in space and time, rather than isolated events by human races or nations. This compelling acclaimed survey offers a global perspective, through a gifted editor of many vivid illustrations, integrating an amazing ocean of literary sources. It explores the sociopolitical, economic, and artistic contexts of human culture, providing an analytical perspective of the global multicultural quest which humanity pursued. Gloria Fiero's popular work offers the reader an opportunity to be introduced to 'The Humanistic Tradition' clearly demonstrating the close relationship between the culture of the past and sophisticated life and rich culture of the present. The book explores the arts and thought of the West in relation to ideas of other world cultures, from the ancient mid-East to the modern far East.

    Ancient World's Light:
The above being said, I would like to caution the reader that the colorful author, and creative editor adopts a rather questionably biased theory, lately in great doubt (Ps. see: Barnel's Black Athena,) that Greek philosophy is the foundation of the Humanistic tradition, at least/ even in the West. Late Medieval Alexandria, Egypt was no doubt, the "Mind of Western Tradition". Eugene Holley Jr. expressed it beautifully, "Historians of philosophy have been wont to begin their story with the Greeks. It may be that we are all mistaken; for among the most ancient fragments left to us by the Egyptians are writings that belong under the rubric of moral philosophy. The Egyptians were the light of the ancient world. They produced many early medical instruments, designed the world's first step pyramid, and laid the empirical groundwork for scientific reasoning. Akhenaton, the rebel pharaoh, is cited as "the Father of Monotheism." Asante stresses throughout the book that these developments came from a confluence of African cultures, and not from other parts of the world. "The practice of the African philosophers along the Nile was a practice of maintaining Maat [the principle of truth, order, and justice] in every aspect of life," he writes. "If we could only learn from them the value of harmony, balance, and righteousness, we would be on our way toward a revival of the spirit of human victory."

this is a smaller version of a bigger set.. these are nice sort of like excerpts from a larger text.. if you're only studying a small section of history and don't need to ever compare before or after they are ok..but you're better off getting the vol. I or II or both depending on what your needs are. most profs are going to want you to compare and contrast what came before and after ... these books have great pics..but get the larger versions.. as these are a lot of little books, and depending on your class you may need to carry 6 little books with you instead of 1 text..

1 out of 5 stars Poor source of detail.......2001-09-03

After using this book (as well as books 2 and 3) as texts for a class, I must say that I found all of them to be overrated and a poor choice of reference. The volumes contain nice photographs but are ineffective as textbooks. For example, as material is introduced a sudden segue to a new subject leaves the reader cold. I would not recommend any of this series to those who need detail. These books support a teaching methodology that relies upon mundane memorization of incidental information rather than comprehensive study.

    5 out of 5 stars Very well-done.......1999-12-19

I highly recommend this series of six books. When I was in college, I bought one of the books because it looked so interesting even though I wasn't taking the course. In the past year, I've ordered the other books in the series. The books are very interesting and informative, with many color pictures of the art and architecture discussed. The books also discuss literature, philosophy, and the history of science. The graphic layout of the books is excellent and there are many reading selections of literature and philosophy. Even though the series concentrates on western humanities, there are also excellent sections on Asian, African, Islamic, and Native American arts.

4 out of 5 stars Educationally excellent, however, erroneous.......1999-09-24

I find this book to be full of great educational material, however, when reading the "historical" research about the Hebrews, I find that it is full of erroneous information. For example, the book implies that the Hebrews "chose" to settle in near the Dead Sea because the land of Canaan was filled with large military forces, but the Bible clearly states that God (or their concept of God) caused them to roam as a form of punishment for their distrust in him. Also, it stated that the ten commandments are all negative (as in don'ts) when I can think of two (4-keep the sabbath, and 5-honor your mother and father) are positives. And, that the ten commandments had no specified punishment. From Bible standards, it is very clear, transgression of the law requires death of either the human or an animal.

      Book Description

When human beings first arrived in North America at the end of the last Ice Age, they encountered a teeming variety of animals, from ground sloths and mastodons to zebras and camels. This spectacularly illustrated book takes us on a captivating journey back to that time, showing us the entire continent and its incredible wildlife as it looked 13,000 years ago.

The book travels the ancient continent region by region, from the icy Arctic vastness to the steamy tropical swamps of Florida. We are introduced to bizarre beasts, now extinct (including glyptodonts, scimitar-toothed cats, and mammoths); animals that have long since disappeared from their North American habitats (lions, cheetahs); and species still seen today (grizzlies, condors, alligators). A wealth of fossil evidence informs the stunning computer-generated panoramas that fill the pages of this extraordinary book. The bones of the ancient beasts again have flesh and fur, unfamiliar animals again roam the landscapes, and the world of prehistoric North America comes startlingly to life.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A very excellent text about the Ice Age and its animals.......2004-01-05

This book joins "Ice Age Mammals of North America" as one of the exceptionally fine recent texts about the vanished large animals living on the North American continent during the Ice Age. Many of these marvelous creatures vanished less than 10,000 years ago, a heartbeat in geological time. You will be particularly struck by the superb, in-full-color computer graphics and photography in the book. The two arts are combined to give astonishing looks at what these animals looked like in their native habitats. If the book contained little more, it would be worth it on this basis alone. But there is much more to recommend the book

After a good introduction, this book examines life during the recent glaciation, and into today, by region. Six regions are encompassed. The first is never-glaciated Beringia, consisting of Alaska and the Bering Sea land bridge. Then, in turn, come the northwestern United States coast, the Great Plains, the Colorado Plateau and Great Basin, Florida, and the Eastern forest. The differences, and similairties, between the Ice Age climates and fauna are carefully explored for each area. Certain key animals in each region are analyzed by in-chapter profiles.

These descriptions are completely up-to-date, and are accompanied by the excellent graphics previously discussed. Animals reviewed in this manner include two varieties of mammoth, the mastodon, the saber-toothed and scimitar cats, the giant. armadillo-like glyptodont, the giant short-faced bear, which was bigger than a Kodiak bear, and several varieties of ground sloth. You will also learn that quite a few animals survived the extinctions, including the moose, musk ox, grizzly bear, bison, elk, as well as many animals that lived on in Eurasia, but not here, such as the horse, the saiga antelope, cheetah, lion, camel, zebra, and the wisent, or European bison.

In the closing chepter, the authors examine the possible reasons for the sudden extinctions of so many large, dominant animals within the span of a few thousand years. These include overkill by man, climatic change, and several other reason. The discussion is timely, thorough and apt.

This book will provide many days of enjoyable, provocative reading. Given ongoing changes in weather, loss of wildlife habitat, and the like, are we continuing, and even accelerating these extinctions? This book offers excellent food for thought on such matters, but I will leave the ultimate decision to the reader, upon reflection.

Very, very highly recommended to anyone with a high school or greater background, including graduate students and academics. Enjoy, and ponder.

          Book Description

Engineers are increasingly faced with indoor air quality issues, particularly in the design of ventilation and filtration systems and airborne contaminant removal. Because this specialty has only recently gained momentum, resources have been limited to scattered research papers on this topic, until now. Indoor Air Quality Engineering covers a wide range of indoor air quality engineering principles and applications, providing guidelines for identifying and analyzing indoor air quality problems as well as designing a system to mitigate these problems. Structured into three sections - properties and behavior of airborne pollutants, measurement and sampling efficiency, and air quality enhancement technologies - this book uses real-life examples, design problems, and solutions to illustrate engineering principles and function as a practical tool for individual study. Specific topics of interest include: particle mechanics, gas kinetics, diffusion and airborne transportation; impaction, gravitational settling, and isokinetic and anisokinetic sampling; and filtration, aerodynamic air cleaning, electrostatic precipitation, wet scrubbing, adsorption, and ventilation effectiveness. Including more than 200 problems and a separate solutions manual for instructors, professors and students in engineering, environmental sciences, occupational health, and industrial hygiene concerned with indoor air quality control will find Indoor Air Quality Engineering provides effective methods, technologies, and principles not traditionally covered in other texts.

            Book Description

Do you feel uncomfortable or ill while indoors? Do you feel better when you go outside?

Various experts have estimated that as few as 10% to as many as 60% of the population feels "sick" while indoors--but quickly feel better once they leave their office, home or school. If this is true for you, the first thing you must understand is that conventional tools and procedures for identifying and stopping exposures to indoor contaminants are not helping you. If they were successful, then your complaints would already be solved and you wouldn't be looking for this type of book.

The best efforts of modern medicine, advanced technology and professional products and services have not solved the problems of Sick Building Syndrome, toxic exposures, allergy reactions, chronic sinusitis and asthma triggers. Their lack of success is not because of a scientific failure or personal fault. Rather, the academic training and professional focus of both the medical treatment professionals and the exposure control experts are based on old ways of thinking about a new phenomena.

"Starting Points for a Healthy Habitat" builds the bridge from the old to the new. It shifts the old focus from solely on the environment (the operation of the building structure and systems) to the new focus on the occupants (their experiences while inside those environments). The old way excludes the occupants. The new way includes both the occupants and their environment.

This simple shift requires no new technology, no breakthrough prescription drug and no high-tech equipment. All that is required is a slightly different way of understanding what happens and how to respond. That shift generates new information in a way that you can understand and trust for making choices about what to do about any indoor habitat that is making you feel ill.

The breakthrough concept of "Starting Points for a Healthy Habitat" is simple yet powerful. It not only solves more problems for more people, it also acts as the catalyst for integrating professional products and services, medical treatment and advanced techniques of identification and measurement. The results have such clarity and simplicity that nearly any individual can be successful. In fact, they usually accomplish their goals in ways that no outside expert can. In a sense, the victim becomes the expert for which they had previously been searching.

The current multitude of books about unhealthy indoor environments and sick buildings are still useful. In fact, they are more important than ever. Most of these current resources--whether scientific, academic, medical or popular press--have critical facts and insights that work and that you should be familiar with. But they treat the issues as if everyone were the same. These public health standards, while necessary and very powerful for large groups of people, are not always applicable to individuals.

Do you have to do everything the experts suggest? What can you leave out? What if their recommendations don't apply to you, or perhaps make you more ill? How do you decide who to trust and what is best for you?

Once you ask these questions, you have moved from the venue of the health and safety of the general population (the objective public standards) to the realm of personal health and safety (the individual).

"Starting Points for a Healthy Habitat" is specifically designed to be your personal guide for becoming your own expert. It teaches you how to generate the answers to your dilemmas in a way you can both understand and trust. It is your resource and support system for making better choices, even in the midst of authoritative beliefs, conflicting claims and increasing fears--which usually polarizes all those involved to the compulsive extremes of pretentious denial and hysterical hyper vigilance. Unchecked, this game typically ends with the victim being blamed and further harmed instead of being helped and healed.

"Starting Points for a Healthy Habitat" shows you how to begin with whatever knowledge you already have, and then generate new information so you can best meet your individual needs for stopping indoor exposures and feeling well again. It provides a detailed, personal plan that will generate, specifically:

What to do. What to avoid. How to interpret the results. What to do next (your next starting point).

You will learn two new tools for determining which of the three most common exposure categories apply to you and how to prioritize your actions. Then you will learn how to evaluate products and services so you can successfully and safely remove those sources.

You will also discover that you are neither alone with your difficulties and complaints, nor in the minority. In fact, the number of people feeling "sick" indoors seems to be increasing faster than our advanced technology can generate names, let alone solutions, for all these newly emerging "illnesses."

"Starting Points for a Healthy Habitat" is an alternative to a private, on-site consultation by traditional experts--a consultation that typically costs from $200 to $5000. A consultation that is usually conducted "their" way, ignoring your experience and needs in deference to the measurements of technological instruments and the legal demands of regulatory compliance. This book, however, is structured for you to solve your complaints your way--while still implementing the experts--just like the thousands of clients the author has guided since 1987.

5 out of 5 stars Life altering, life correcting, life saving........2000-07-12

I suffered a three-strike attack on my health several years ago, first with a dangerous gas leaking into an office building, then with a massive plumbing flood that combined with the gas to generate incredible amounts of mold/fungus, etc., finally with a mix of kerosene/jet fuel and heavy perfumes applied by others to mask all of the above. Despite my spending incredible amounts of time and money on every top-dollar doctor in Colorado, Carl Grimes was the one who personally figured out everything that had happened and helped steer me to solutions beyond anyone else's grasp. This book is surely the world's best distillation of knowledge in these areas at its current peak, and I heartily recommend it to anyone... not just with healthy habitat issues, but anyone with a habitat... so that when/if you should suddenly have a horrible surprise happen to you, or to a friend, you will have a strong knowledge base to survive the unexpected change in your world.

4 out of 5 stars An Essential Reference Book.......2000-05-27

"Starting Points for a Healthy Habitat" provided me with insight as to why my daughter wasn't healing, when I thought she should have been better. I found the book supporative, encouraging and helpful for anyone who has experienced the frustrations of living with environmental illness. The appendicies alone, which include both books and internet web sites are a valuable reference tool.

                Book Description

Cultural property inside museums--textiles and works of art on paper and pigments and leather bindings, for example--can be threatened by outdoor pollutants, such as automobile exhaust fumes, and by pollutants generated from indoor sources, such as gases from cleaning products.
Indoor-generated pollutants generally pose the greatest threat to artifacts because of their continuous and close proximity.
The focus of this volume, based on the Getty Trust Museum Monitoring Project as well case studies, is environmental monitoring for common gaseous pollutants, with emphasis on passive sampling. The volume begins with an overview of the history and nature of pollutants of concern to museums and a
discussion of the challenges facing scientists, conservators, and collections managers seeking to develop target pollutant guidelines to protect cultural property. Subsequent chapters address passive sampling, the planning and conducting of an air quality monitoring program, and the interpretation
of results and mitigation considerations. The appendix is a comprehensive compilation of the major gaseous pollutants encountered in museums, their sources, and the at-risk materials.
