Book Description

This is the latest edition of a U.S. Army field manual (FM 23-10) covering sniper training. The introduction states: "The sniper has special abilities, training and equipment. His job is to deliver discriminatory highly accurate rifle fire against enemy targets, which cannot be engaged successfully by the rifleman because of range, size, location, fleeting nature, or visibility. Sniping requires the development of basic infantry skills to a high degree of perfection. A sniper's training incorporates a wide variety of subjects designed to increase his value as a force multiplier and to ensure his survival on the battlefield. The art of sniping requires learning and repetitiously practicing these skills until mastered. A sniper must be highly trained in long-range rifle marksmanship and field craft skills to ensure maximum effective engagements with minimum risk. The primary mission of a sniper in combat is to support combat operations by delivering precise long-range fire on selected targets. By this, the sniper creates casualties among enemy troops, slows enemy movement, frightens enemy soldiers, lowers morale, and adds confusion to their operations. The secondary mission of the sniper is collecting and reporting battlefield information. A well-trained sniper, combined with the inherent accuracy of his rifle and ammunition, is a versatile supporting arm available to an infantry commander. The importance of the sniper cannot be measured simply by the number of casualties he inflicts upon the enemy. Realization of the sniper's presence instills fear in enemy troop elements and influences their decisions and actions. A sniper enhances a unit's firepower and augments the varied means for destruction and harassment of the enemy. Whether a sniper is organic or attached, he will provide that unit with extra supporting fire."

4 out of 5 stars A Government's Best Shot.......2007-01-13

This is a very down-to-earth book with explanations and details that are crucial to the material in the book. There are few setbacks, such as the print, low-grade photos, and grammar errors. Overall, if you can overlook the minor flaws, you will see an immense amount of information.

1 out of 5 stars Total Rip-off and misrepresentation.......2006-12-29

21st Century? Nonsense! FM 23-10 was issued on August 17, 1994. That is over 12 years ago. I had this same exact manual on CD-ROM along with many more military manuals that came FREE with a computer war game.

Shame on Amazon for not checking the origins and date of this charade. The copy quality is terrible and there is absolutely no value to be had.

I was pleasantly suprised to see that this book is published by the Department of Defense. Many similar books published by Paladin press devote an inordinate amount of space to their author's political diatribes (Plaster's excellent but somewhat dated Ultimate Sniper is an exception).

This book has a wealth of information, but is devoted exclusively to the M24 Army sniper system. It has no information on older scopes (like the ART scopes), nor on the Marine M40A3 or even Army modifications like the 300 Win Mag. Some areas are too brief (like the lack of mention of problems with accuracy if the scope is has one zero and the focus adjust is changed to a different yardage).

Where the book falls short is in editing. Not only did they pick the most butt ugly fonts, which they compress and resize line by line (from around 11 to 14 points), making reading slow, but almost every page has typos, spelling, or punctuation mistakes. The figures look like they have been copied from an old mimeographed version, and are sometimes almost impossible to figure out what they are showing. Some of the figures are mislabled (like two that reverse iron site pictures with scope pictures). Some are inaccurate (like the windage mirage for 1-3 MPH wind). Some tables are way off (like the windage adjustment for different MPH winds) - though a page or two before gives accurate formulas. There is no index and some paragraphs look like they were pasted twice at different places (like the adjustment of 1 MOA for 20% humidity changes).

Regardless of one's political leanings, most of us hope that our military is not sloppy. The editing of this book makes me wonder about how much precision is valued. That is curious in a book on sniping, which is generally read by people who place great importance on precision.

As a Gulf War Veteran and Us Air Force member, I found this FM to be very genuine to standard military training literature. Actually, I was shocked that it was offered to the civilian market. To all non-military members, Yes this is the real deal. It is a portion of the clasroom training material in Us Army Sniper school. However, if you are not familiar with military terminology I would suggest a book by an actual author and not the US Government.

    Book Description

The late Samuel Eliot Morison, a former U.S. Navy admiral, was also one of America's premier historians. Combining a first-hand knowledge of the sea and transatlantic travel with a brilliantly readable narrative style, he produced what has become nothing less than the definitive account of the great age of European exploration. In his riveting and richly illustrated saga, Morison offers a comprehensive account of all the known voyages by Europeans to the New World from 500 A.D. to the seventeenth century. Together, the two volumes of The European Discovery of America tell the compelling stories of the many intrepid explorers who made what was then a journey frought with danger--figures as diverse as Leif Ericsson, Columbus, John Cabot, Jacques Cartier, Martin Frobisher, Magellan, Sir Walter Raleigh, and Sir Francis Drake to name but a few. They also follow the adventures of lesser-known but no less interesting mariners and offer a detailed look at those who set them forth on their travels. In the first volume, The Northern Voyages--winner of the prestigious Bancroft Prize for History--Morison re-creates the lives and perilous times of those who claimed to have seen the shores of North America in the 600 years after the Norsemen first landed. He brings to his account a rare immediacy, making the drama and unpredictability of their voyages as significant in relation to the people of their era as the astronauts' journeys have been for our own times. Morison also offers a fascinating look at the imaginary lands reported by early travelers (such mythical places as Antilia and the Seven Cities, the glorious Kingdoms of Norumbega and Saguenay, and Hy-Brasil the Isle of the Blest) and examines as well the alleged discoverers of these lands. With warmth and wit he distinguishes fact from fiction, and imaginary explorers and their exploits from actual men and events. In the second volume, Morison turns his attention to the navigators who negotiated the waters of the Caribbean and the treacherous coasts of South America, even following them as they ventured ashore to the dark inland of the southern continent. The Southern Voyages begins with the events leading up to Columbus's arrival in San Salvador in 1492 and concludes with the discovery of the southernmost bit of land, Cape Horn, by Dutch explorers in 1616. In between, Morison retraces the routes of all the great mariners, including a step-by-step account of Magellan's voyage that would take him around the world. Morison has enlivened his narrative with a wide range of source material from Italy, Spain, Portugal, and South America, in the process shedding new light on questions that have divided scholars througout history: Did Sir Francis Drake discover San Francisco Bay? Was Amerigo Vespucci a great explorer or a fraud--or a little of both? What role did the French have in the European discovery of Brazil? Each volume brims with contemporary illustrations, maps (many of them specially drawn for this history) and photographs (often taken by Morison himself as he flew at low altitude along the coastal routes of explorers), which together identify virtually every allusion to land and sea made by the great European navigators in their ship logs and their later accounts. With the 500th anniversary of the European arrival in America came much controversy over Columbus's true legacy. With its lively and engaging style, and with its unsurpassed understanding of the age, The European Discovery of America helps put the era of exploration in much-needed perspective. Anyone interested in the history of America, indeed, in the history of Western Civilization, will find these volumes absolutely essential.

5 out of 5 stars The Classic Account of the Discovery of North America .......2006-03-24

Morison was a Harvard professor, a Navy Admiral, a sailor, and a good writer and he turned out two hefty volumes about the discovery of the Americas. This volume concerns European travelers to North America before 1600. Volume 2 is about the southern voyages of Christopher Columbus, Magellan, and others.

Morison begins his account with the mythical St. Brendan, proceeds onward to the Vikings, examines the claims of other pre-Columbian "disoverers" of America, and then gets to Cabot, Cartier, and the 16th century explorers. He ends the book with a description of the attempt to found the first British colony in the United States at Roanoke Island, NC. Following each chapters he describes his sources and the work of other historians and discusses some of the more outrageous theories about pre-Columbian discoveries.

The book is enhanced by Morison's own experience as a sailor. He is able to refute some of the fantasies of other historians with his on-the-ground and sea experiences. One of the most interesting chapter in the book describes English ships and the life at sea of sailors in the 16th century. Good illustrations and maps enhance the text.

Morison doesn't have much interest and empathy for the Indians the early explorers encountered, nor the forces in Europe that caused the European explorers to trust their fortunes to hazardous journeys. He's a man who celebrates the romance of the sea -- and casts a baleful eye on those sailors and historians who fail to live up to his high standards of seamanship and scholarly endeavor. That this is the best book ever written on the discovery and early exploration of North America is almost without dispute. It's a shame that it has been allowed to go out of print.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Survey of the Discoverers.......2004-09-10

When not compiling the history of the United States Navy in World War II, Morison had a passion for chronicling the discovery of the New World. His two volume set constitutes the best, if not the only, repository of each and all European discoverer in the Americas, and this volume captures not only Columbus but also Scandinavian (Leif Eriksson), French (Cartier, Verrezano), English (Cabot) and a host of other expeditions. Also superbly illustrated with often stunning photos by the author of the Eastern seaboard, Labrador and the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

5 out of 5 stars A must reference book for home library.......2004-04-11

Premier historian Morison brings in very narrative form discoveries of America. Decribes one by one each voyage to north of Virginia, and even discusses those that never took place. Seasoned mariner himself, details to reader not only specific voyages, but explains social environment of the era. One chapter tells about ships and seamen. This helps understand what and how the discoverers were thinking, and how they proceeded.

Each chapter is followed by discussion of source materials (rare these days). Those who are interested to find out more, will have ready shopping list of additional books, as well as their evaluation by Morison.

    Many pictures.

5 out of 5 stars Back To St. Brendan and the Irish Monks.......2001-10-26

In this volume Morison goes back to the voyages of St. Brendan and the Irish monks as well as those of Norsemen such as Leif Erickson. The first post-Columbian voyages the author describes are those of John Cabot in 1497-1498 and the book ends with a discussion of the experiences of the second Virginia colony in 1587.

Morison is an entertaining writer who offers many original insights.

Some of his thorough research was done as a passenger on a small twin-engined plane flown along the same coasts which were discovered by Cabot, Cartier and Verrazzano.

4 out of 5 stars An area of exploration often neglected.......1998-08-12

In reporting the discovery of the Americas the popular focus of historians has been on the voyages of Columbus and others in the southern latitudes. The early northern explorers, in search of the elusive north west passage to Cathay, sailed in waters far more hostile than their southern compatriots. Morison has a great love for his subject and wealth of knowledge. He clearly details the personalities of the leaders of these early expeditions and the dangers they faced. This is a most enjoyable read filled with wit and knowledge, which has left me searching for other titles by the author.

3 out of 5 stars Not a bad read, but marketed somewhat unfairly.......2003-09-26

I realize that this is a classic text and a 3-star rating is not really appropriate, but I think there's some things someone should know before buying this book that arn't spelled out. First of all, despite its fancy cover, this book is older than Ozzy. In fact, the first edition was put out in 1929 (to be fair, this is mentioned on the cover.) A lot has happened since then, but what really bothers me is how the back cover markets this book as a definitive exposition on probability. In reality, Von Mises is the advocator (inventor?) of a particular concept of probability, the (extreme) "frequentist approach." In his view, *only* sequences in a long series of observations can be modeled by probability. Now Im no expert, but I can tell you that this is extremety of viewpoint is not agreed on my many experts in the field today. If you're interested in the evolution of the theory of probability, then I think this is a fine read. But if you are wanting a thorough and complete introduction to concepts of probability and statistics, this may not be the best place to find it.

5 out of 5 stars Rare discussion by a statistician & easy to read.......1999-07-29

I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the meaning of statistics. Statistics is based on probability theory, which in turn is dependent on a very specific definition of 'probability'. As such, statistical interpretation should always reflect this definition. This book clarifies the meaning of probability and its impact on statistical reasoning.

It covers the 'grey area' of statistics, too often ignored in university texts.

This book is very easy to read and does not require much exposure to mathematical probability/statistics. The central ideas of the book are applied to 'practical' applications in Physics, which makes it even more interesting.

For the price, it is a great buy!

5 out of 5 stars great frequentistic work.......1998-04-26

This outstanding presentation of the frequentist interpretation of probability should be read by all seeking an understanding of what a probability really =is=. One need not accept frequentism (and I do not) to profit greatly from this work.

"Pure mathematics," Albert Einstein once remarked, "is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas." In The Universe and the Teacup, Los Angeles Times science writer K. C. Cole discusses some of the ways this "poetry" can be used to look at science and other realms of experience.

Mathematics, Cole explains, enables us to "translate the complexity of the world into manageable patterns," whether we're trying to comprehend the risks of smoking or the usefulness of DNA matches in criminal investigations. Cole also looks at how mathematical principles apply in unexpected fields. One chapter, for example, vindicates the theories on voting rights that cost Lani Guinier her Justice Department nomination in 1993.

Without relying on a single equation, Cole's gently humorous prose helps make mathematics unthreatening to laypeople, enabling them to better understand the world in which they live.

      Book Description

Filled with “a thousand fascinating facts and shrewd observations (Martin Gardner, Los Angeles Times), this “beguiling and lucid book” (San Francisco Chronicle) demonstrates how the truth and beauty of everything, from relativity to rainbows, is all in the numbers. Line drawings.

5 out of 5 stars What were you thinking? This is a GREAT book!.......2006-01-17

Three stars? For a book that was a best seller from LA to Taiwan, and is an absolute delight? Beloved of physicists and teachers across the country? Clearly, politics has tainted many of the comments. Yes, Cole is a liberal--but then, so are many scientists... and for a good reason! This is a five star book if there ever was one.

      1 out of 5 stars Worthless.......2005-06-11

Expounds some sort of "new age" mathematics where clarity,
accuracy and consistency are evidently unwelcome. Perhaps
this was intended to make the result non-threatening, but it
      is neither beautiful nor useful.

It will go down in history -- with luck, leaving not a trace.

5 out of 5 stars The Leonardo da Vinci of science writing!.......2004-03-07

That's a direct quote from Amazon, and boy, were they right. Only Cole would link the O.J. Simpson trial to the discovery of the top quark in order to explain various roads to truth. The best part is the relationship between beauty and truth, in which she explains the unexplainable--showing how Einstein's theories (and in fact, all modern physics) is based on the notion of symmetry. But there's also so much less etheral food for thought here: the geometry of fairness, for example!

5 out of 5 stars what is truth exactly.......2002-06-08

Being disenchanted with religion, I picked up this and other books in search of some other kind of truth. I do feel as though after reading this book I have a much better understanding of what 'truth' is and what it's not. I think those who nit-pick about their claims of little discrepancies in the book are really missing out on the bigger picture. The book is full of interesting little facts and factoids but the interesting thing to me was to see how she's pulled together these common insights that are gained from so many fields of study. I think this was just about my favorite book ever.

2 out of 5 stars So many better choices out there........2002-04-04

Chapter two, second paragraph: "The Milky Way galaxy contains 200 billion stars..."
Chapter two, a few pages later: "Fifteen billion is also more or less the number of stars in the galaxy." Obviously, the number of stars in the galaxy is not precisely known, but we do know that 15 billion and 200 billion are two different things. One of the author's "truths" is self-evidently not true. Purveyors of "truth and beauty", whether scientists, gurus, philosophers, spiritual leaders, or journalists, often regard their subject and their audience far too casually. Here we have a case in point. Perhaps most books contain 'typos' and the miscues inherent to humanity, but here it seems that both the author and the editor were asleep at the wheel, something that needs to be addressed if the book achieves a second printing (and I don't see why that would happen).
The subject is truly fascinating; or at least it should be -- the relationship of aesthetics, mathematics, and logic. At the deepest levels of the human intellect's inquiries, the answers are all about a mysterious mathematical beauty. The reality of this escapes most people, which is why the "National Bestseller" heading on the cover of Cole's book intrigued me. Apparently the book has enjoyed a larger readership than most such popularizations. Unfortunately the superficial, disjoined 'newspaper style' of science serves the material poorly. The writing rambles almost aimlessly. The books of many mathematicians and physicists have examined the relationship of reality, reason, mathematics, and aesthetics. Devlin's 'The Language of Mathematics' is very good. Fairly recent works by Penrose, Davies, Rucker, Berlinski, Greene, and others come to mind. Some of these books are far better than others. This volume is one of the others.

        Book Description

The problem of the choice of prior probabilities for Bayesian inferences is considered, with special reference to the theory of inductive probabilities and the analysis of the multinomial inferences provided by Bayesian statistics. Among other things, it is argued that the choice of prior probabilities in a given empirical inquiry should be suitably restricted by specific `contextual constraints' such as the available background knowledge and the cognitive goal of the inquiry, where this goal is assumed to be the achievement of a high degree of verisimilitude.
One of the most original features of the book is the attempt at a `coordinated development' of Bayesian statistics, the theory of inductive probabilities, and the verisimilitude theory.
The book will be of special interest to researchers and readers concerned with Bayesian inference and, more generally, to readers engaged in inductive logic, philosophy of science and statistics.

          Book Description

When John Maynard Keynes likened Jan Tinbergen's early work in econometrics to black magic and alchemy, he was expressing a widely held view of a new discipline. However, even after half a century of practical work and theorizing by some of the most accomplished social scientists, Keynes' comments are still repeated today. This book assesses the foundations and development of econometrics and sets out a basis for the reconstruction of the foundations of econometric inference by examining the various interpretations of probability theory that underlie econometrics.

When John Maynard Keynes likened Jan Tinbergen's early work in econometrics to black magic and alchemy, he was expressing a widely held view of a new discipline. However, even after half a century of practical work and theorising by some of the most accomplished social scientists, Keynes' comments are still repeated today. This book assesses the foundations and development of econometrics and sets out a basis for the reconstruction of the foundations of econometric inference by examining the various interpretations of probability theory which underlie econometrics. Keuzenkamp claims that the probabilistic foundations of econometrics are weak, and although econometric inferences may yield interesting knowledge, claims to be able to falsify or verify economic theories are unwarranted. Methodological falsificationism in econometrics is an illusion. Instead, it is argued, econometrics should locate itself in the tradition of positivism.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book Written On Econometrics,Philosophy,andJMKeynes.......2004-07-11

This book is already a classic.Keuzenkamp(K)blends the philosophy and history of probability and statistics with that of econometrics in such a skillful fashion that the technically trained reader(upper division courses in mathematical statistics, probability, econometrics and philosophy)will want to start reading it over again as soon as he finishs the book the first time.K correctly realizes that the goal of econometrics can only be that of estimating and not testing.K correctly shows that econometrics should be founded in the positivist(logical empiricist)tradition. Finally,an academic economist gives J M Keynes's arguments, made by Keynes in his debate with Tinbergen over the ability of econometricians to Test(with a capital T as in Truth) different theories of the business cycle, their just due. There is only one small(very small)quibble. On pages 272-273,K states:"Furthermore, an investigator may try different prior distributions in order to obtain upper and lower limits in probabilistic inference(this approach is proposed by Good and Leamer)".In fact,J M Keynes was the first advocate of this approach in Part V of A Treatise on Probability. The interested reader can find Keynes's interval approach in chapters 5,10,15,16,17,20,22,29 and 30.K has destroyed the myth, created by many philosophically illiterate economists and econometricians over the last 60-65 years, that Keynes's knowledge about mathematics and statistics was "rusty" and that he was just trying to shoot the sound ideas of other researchers "full of holes" because he didn't understand what they were doing.Keynes understood only to well.

                    Book Description

Anyone involved in the philosophy of science is naturally drawn into the study of the foundations of probability. Different interpretations of probability, based on competing philosophical ideas, lead to different statistical techniques, and frequently to mutually contradictory consequences.

This unique book presents a new interpretation of probability, rooted in the traditional interpretation that was current in the 17th and 18th centuries. Mathematical models are constructed based on this interpretation, and statistical inference and decision theory are applied, including some examples in artificial intelligence, solving the main foundational problems. Nonstandard analysis is extensively developed for the construction of the models and in some of the proofs. Many nonstandard theorems are proved, some of them new, in particular, a representation theorem that asserts that any stochastic process can be approximated by a process defined over a space with equiprobable outcomes.

                      Book Description

This is the most comprehensive guide yet published on transfer of development rights, or TDR, the market-driven technique that uses private sector profits rather than public dollars to permanently preserve environmentally-sensitive areas, agricultural land, historic sites, open space, infrastructure capacity, housing, urban scale and other important community assets.

In a step-by-step approach, this book demonstrates how to prepare regulations which motivate private property owners to voluntarily deed-restrict their land and transfer growth to areas where communities want additional development. The author is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners. However, Saved By Development will be of equal interest to environmentalists, historic preservationists, farmland advocates, government officials, elected office holders and anyone else concerned about the effects of uncontrolled growth.

Transfer of development rights, or TDR, responds to a predicament faced by most communities. These communities believe that they can't protect privately-owned property because they have no funding for compensation. As explained in Saved By Development, TDR motivates owners to voluntarily preserve their properties for non-development purposes in return for being able to sell their "development rights". These development rights are purchased, not by public agencies, but by private sector developers who use them to build additional development in areas where communities want extra growth. So with TDR, development pays for preservation.
