Book Description

Sports fans love to argue. About which strategy should be used. About whose team is better. About which coach is the best. But nothing revs the motor of a sports fan more than a debate about who are the greatest players of all time.

This book attempts to settle at least one of these debates: Who are the greatest hockey goalies of all time. And it does so with an all-star lineup of experts just as impressive as the 50 men selected as the best goalies of the 20th Century. Indeed, Gladiators may just end the debate once and for all.

Kevin Allen, the esteemed hockey writer for USA Today, and Bob Duff, respected columnist for the Hockey Weekly, team with Hall of Fame goalie and super scout Johnny Bower and dozens of NHL greats who played outside the net to provide a provocative—and sharply persuasive—list of the best goalies ever. Bower's critical eye, he provides incisive evaluations of each goalie, and the commentary by such luminaries as Gordie Howe, Bill Gadsby, Dino Ciccarelli, Brett Hull, Marcel Proust, and others, who provide the equally compelling perspective of those who tried to score against them, give Gladiators an unprecedented credibility. Allen and Duff give it an unprecedented polish.

Not only do the authors list the 50 greatest, they rank them one through fifty. The well-rounded list includes such old-timers as Terry Sawchuk, Ken Dryden, and Georges Vezina and the stars of today, such as Patrick Roy, Dominik Hasek, and Curtis Joseph. Bracing descriptions of each goalie as a player and a person accompany Bower's technical analysis and the insights of the scorers.

5 out of 5 stars A compendium of sport's bravest, most colorful people.......2007-06-12

If you aren't aware of hockey's great goalies of the 20's thru 60's, this is the book for you. Being older than I care to admit, I saw Crozier, Worsley, Plante (have their autographs), Bower, Hall, Sawchuk & a dozen others who are now little more than a footnote or a color commentator's time-filler. This book will remedy that, giving a good background into some of the most outstanding goalies of the "Golden Age" of hockey. Of particular interest is the categorizing of many of these men as "unsung", "tragic" etc. I'll be referring to it often.

5 out of 5 stars KICK SAVE AND A BEAUTY!.......2002-12-12

"WITHOUT FEAR" by Kevin Allen and Bob Duff is one of the best books ever published on the history of NHL goaltenders. This just published 280 page hard cover coffee table edition is a must for hockey fans of all ages, and especially all those junior goalies out there? The 50 greatest goalies in history are ranked and profiled in great detail. Hockey legend Johnny Bower gives his commentary on each selection as well. One can't argue with the selection of the 50 goalies, but you can have fun with friends, arguing if Patrick Roy[#1 ranked]is the greatest of them all? All the great names of the past and present are here to read about, like Terry Sawchuk, Glenn Hall, Jacques Plante, Ken Dryden, Eddie Giacomin, Tony Esposito, and Gump Worsley just to name a few from the old school. Modern players like Patrick Roy, Martin Brodeur, Dominik Hasek, Ed Belfour, Mike Vernon and Curtis Joseph are some of the newer entries. Some of the goalies profiled like Rogie Vachon, Lorne Chabot, Davey Kerr and Roger Crozier were never elected to the hall of fame, but are surely deserving of consideration? I consider this book to be a bible of goaltending history, and a must have book to make any hockey library complete.

J.M. Roberts's monumental Penguin History of the World became a publishing phenomenon and sold in the hundreds of thousands. Now he has produced an equally brilliant new book, focusing solely on our own troubled and dramatic century, and it has all the breathtaking sweep and confident judgment of his previous work. Most important, Roberts takes a truly international view of things. The 20th century, he argues, is marked as much as anything by the decline of Europe as the world's sole arbiter and the emergence of today's cosmopolitan, global civilization, born of decolonization, the resurgence of Islam, and the vibrant, self-assured new nations of Asia and Latin America. He also examines the other two major trends of our time: the social and economic empowerment of women and the extraordinary quadrupling of the world's population, most of it in Third World countries. A challenging and exacting read, Twentieth Century is destined to be a classic. --Christopher Hart, Amazon.co.uk

Book Description

Offering a dazzling overview of a turbulent century, The Penguin History of the Twentieth Century explores the dramatic events and underlying trends that made the twentieth century the most transformative in human history. Despite two devastating World Wars and the traumatic rise and fall of communism, wealth has increased significantly alongside a four-fold leap in population, womenÂ's lives have been transformed, America has assumed undisputed political and cultural leadership, and China is now clearly awaiting its moment—J. M. RobertÂ's masterly overview, now updated to the present day, brings all of this and more into focus.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive to say the least.......2007-01-25

I think the review on the back most aptly describes this book: "The most comprehensive, objective, geographically neutral and yet accessible history of the century yet published in English". Economist, Books of the Year.

Leave it to the Economist to say more in one sentence than others could do (including myself) in paragraphs.

This book is a very good summary of the century. The author analyzes history while leaving biases out. When he does write about prevailing opinions that are confrontational he will also note those as well. THis book is for people serious about history. It leaves the interest in the history and not in any novelization or attempts to lighten it for entertainment's sake.

After finishing this lengthy volume one feels a certain sense of accomplishment only to be humbled by the accomplishment this author must have felt when he finshed it. If you have an interest in the twentieth century and how the events are interelated then this book is for you.

5 out of 5 stars A book that every 21st century habitant should read.......2004-10-15

I'm not an historian and English is not my native language, but I found that this book gave me a new and broad understanding of the world we are living in. I feel that if more of our politicians and authorities would have the knowledge this book provides we could be guided in a better way in the difficult years of this first decade of the new century. The book is easy to read, the prose of Mr. Roberts is fluent and any good reader will really enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars from one of the best moderm writers of history.......2004-08-22

Roberts was one of the best modern writers of history. His "History of the World" has become a classic. He also wrote "A History of Europe" and this "Twentieth Century: The History of the World, 1901 to 2000". Both of these later works appear to have grown out of his "History of the World". That isn't a bad thing.

This book is one of the best end of the century reflections on the 20th Century. It is very much written from the viewpoint of a scholar. This is something that turns some folks off, which is fine. But, nonetheless, it is still eminently readable. Roberts has a firm grasp of "The Big Picture".

This is the kind of book more people should read. Roberts writer about all areas of the world, from Europe and America, to Russia, China, the Middle East, South America, Africa, etc. In many ways, the 20th century was when, in many ways, the world stopped being Eurocentric.

I would buy this book again.

1 out of 5 stars zero emotion.......2002-05-23

(yawn) I love to sink my teeth into big history books but this one's so flat. I tried several times to pick this one up but it seemed very monotone to me. It was like reading a text book. Perhaps it was all just above me, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you were a hardcore "facts" person.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good for a big book.......2001-10-29

Robert's latest epic is a largely Euro-centric review of world events during the twentieth century. Overall it is enjoyable, comprehensive and easy to get through. It is deliberately Euro-centric since the century began with Europe as the central power and ended with Europe closing ranks to form an important political and economic zone that is probably larger than the sum of its individual parts.

Much of the book deals with Europe's influence on the world - either as a colonial power expanding its empires or as an impoverished post-war debtor disposing off its overseas assets. The only other nations which receive half-decent coverage are the United States, Russia, Japan and China.

I think the strength of Robert's book is his enviable grasp of the big picture. The scope of this work is beyond the vast majority of popular writers. I think the best individual sections are those covering the years and events leading up to WW1 and those which deal with Japan prior to WW2. Very few generalist readers will be fully up to speed on the effects of Japan's defeat of imperial Russia in 1906 and the long-term implications of its invasion of Post-Revolutionary China. Roberts does a fine job on both counts.

The book's weakness are three fold. One, this is almost entirely a social and political history. Economics gets little attention, even though it has played a central role in world affairs since 1900. Just imagine writing a history which says little on international monetary crises, the Great Depression, oil crises and the staggering improvement in global living standards since 1900. Roberts does cover these areas, but they read almost like add-ons. Two, his coverage of the Middle East is rather perfunctory. Details of France and Britain's departure are terse and the reasons for the Ottoman collapse are a bit hazy. So too are the influences of the UN and the US in post colonial times. Third, his style of writing comes from my father's era. Some of his sentences seem to go on for ever, although this is more of an editing issue than a criticism of the author.

Overall though, Roberts has put together a fine book on the past 100 years. The disappointments are more than made up for in its analysis of Europe - which is truly first class. Four Stars.

            Book Description

The practice of performing and managing regulatory air toxic risk assessments requires an exceptionally broadbase of understanding. The information and hands-on skills needed to evaluate the effects of air toxic emissions on human health derive from a broad range of disciplines: engineering, the physical and biological sciences, probability, statistics, and medicine. Dr. Lawrence Gratt's Air Toxic Risk Assessment and Management provides a comprehensive study of the subject of risk assessment, showing how the various disciplines are integrated to carry out this complex process. No other resource combines the basic science underlying risk assessment with the techniques needed to perform the analyses.

This is a NAVAL HEALTH RESEARCH CENTER WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB OH TOXICOLOGY DETACHMENT report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A284683. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The mission of Naval Air Facility Atsugi is to provide facilities, services and material support for U.S. Navy and Marine Corps aviation operations, and to provide logistic support for Carrier Air Wing FIVE. Approximately 8,000 military personnel and dependents arc stationed St NAF atsugi. A population boom in the early 1970s caused massive expansion in the communities surrounding the base and, as a result, the requirement for disposal of municipal and medical wastes also grew. Currently, the Shinkampo Incinerator immediately adjacent to NAF Atsugi burns over 180 tons of waste per day. Prevailing winds blow emissions from the incinerator stack over highly populated areas of NAF Atsugi. Under contract from the Navy Environmental Health Center, a private environmental consulting firm conducted an ambient air toxic study to evaluate the chemical constituency of the incinerator's emissions. This study examined the ambient air concentration of multiple toxic and criteria pollutants. Over 200 chemicals were identified in the air over NAF Atsugi; however, within the scientific literature, toxicology information suitable for use in human health risk assessment could be found for all but 66 of these chemicals. The present report describes the derivation of appropriate risk assessment reference values from data in the scientific literature and summarizes the health effects of each of the chemicals detected at NAF Atsugi.

                Product Description

This authoritative electronic book on CD-ROM provides a comprehensive guide to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulation of toxic air pollutants. Toxic air pollutants, also known as hazardous air pollutants, are those pollutants that are known or suspected to cause cancer or other serious health effects, such as reproductive effects or birth defects, or adverse environmental effects. EPA is working with state, local, and tribal governments to reduce air toxics releases of 188 pollutants to the environment. Examples of toxic air pollutants include benzene, which is found in gasoline; perchlorethlyene, which is emitted from some dry cleaning facilities; and methylene chloride, which is used as a solvent and paint stripper by a number of industries. Examples of other listed air toxics include dioxin, asbestos, toluene, and metals such as cadmium, mercury, chromium, and lead compounds. People exposed to toxic air pollutants at sufficient concentrations and durations may have an increased chance of getting cancer or experiencing other serious health effects. These health effects can include damage to the immune system, as well as neurological, reproductive (e.g., reduced fertility), developmental, respiratory and other health problems. In addition to exposure from breathing air toxics, some toxic air pollutants such as mercury can deposit onto soils or surface waters, where they are taken up by plants and ingested by animals and are eventually magnified up through the food chain. Topics covered include: Reducing Air Toxics in Your Community, Guidebook for Small Businesses, Risk Assessment for Toxic Air Pollutants, Evaluating Exposures, Health Risk, Guidelines for Carcinogen Risk Assessment, Odor Thresholds, Mercury Report to Congress, Toxics Release Inventory, Rules and Implementation, National-Scale Air Toxics Assessment, Risk Studies, Education and Outreach, Pollutants and Sources, Publications. This remarkable CD-ROM is packed with over 33,000 pages reproduced using Adobe Acrobat PDF software - allowing direct viewing on Windows and Macintosh systems. Our research focuses on the linkage between land use planning policy and the spatial pattern of exposure to air toxics emissions. Our objective is to develop a modeling framework for assessment of the community health risk implications of land use policy. The modeling framework is not intended to be a regulatory tool for small-scale land use decisions, but a long-range planning tool to assess the community health risk implications of alternative land use scenarios at a regional or subregional scale. This paper describes the development and application of an air toxic source model for generating aggregate emission factors for industrial and commercial zoning districts as a function of permitted uses. To address the uncertainty of estimating air toxics emission rates for planned general land use or zoning districts, the source model uses an emissions probability mass function that weights each incremental permitted land use activity by the likelihood of occurrence. We thus reduce the uncertainty involved in planning for development with no prior knowledge of the specific industries that may locate within the land use district. These air toxics emission factors can then be used to estimate pollutant atmospheric mass flux from land use zoning districts, which can then be input to air dispersion and human health risk assessment models to simulate the spatial pattern of air toxics exposure risk. The model database was constructed using the California Air Toxics Inventory, 1997 US Economic Census, and land assessment records from several California counties. The database contains information on more than 200 air toxics at the 2-digit Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) level. We present a case study to illustrate application of the model. LUAIRTOX, the interactive spreadsheet model that applies our methodology to the California data, is available at http://www2.bren.ucsb.edu/~mwillis/LUAIRTOX.htm.

                      Description:
Ambient air samples collected from five monitoring sites in Portland, OR during July 1999 to August 2000 were analyzed for 43 hazardous air pollutants (HAP). HAP concentrations were compared to carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic benchmark levels. Carcinogenic benchmark concentrations were set at a risk level of one-in-one-million (1x10^-^6). Hazard ratios of 1.0 were used when comparing HAP concentrations to non-carcinogenic benchmarks. Emission sources (point, area, and mobile) were identified and a cumulative cancer risk and total hazard index were calculated for HAPs exceeding these health benchmark levels. Seventeen HAPs exceeded a cancer risk level of 1x10^-^6 at all five monitoring sites. Nineteen HAPs exceeded this level at one or more site. Carbon tetrachloride, 1,3-butadiene, formaldehyde, and 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane contributed more than 50% to the upper-bound lifetime cumulative cancer risk of 2.47x10^-^4. Acrolein was the only non-carcinogenic HAP with hazard ratios that exceeded 1.0 at all five sites. Mobile sources contributed the greatest percentage (68%) of HAP emissions. Additional monitoring and health assessments for HAPs in Portland, OR are warranted, including addressing issues that may have overestimated or underestimated risks in this study. Abatement strategies for HAPs that exceeded health benchmarks should be implemented to reduce potential adverse health risks.
