Book Description
For more than forty-five years, Kevin Cahill has been helping to heal the world: as a leading specialist in tropical medicine and as a driving force in humanitarian assistance and relief efforts across the globe.Physician, teacher, activist, diplomat, and advocate, Cahill has touched many lives and helped right many wrongs. In this book, he chronicles extraordinary achievements of compassion and commitment. Bringing together a rich selection of writingsÂessays, op-ed pieces, speeches, and other works, many out of print or hard to findÂhe crafts a fascinating self-portrait of a life devoted to others. The writings reflect fully the range of CahillÂ's passions. Reporting from places under siegeÂLebanon, Somalia, Nicaragua, Libya, and IrelandÂCahill writes as a physician and activist working to restore lives wounded by land mines or threatened by violence and disease. Closer to home, there are his visionary statements from the beginning of the AIDS epidemic, powerful critiques of the politics of famine and public health, and programs for new forms of humanitarian assistance to transform health and human rights.Looking back as the Bronx-born son of an Irish physician, he also touches on more personalÂbut no less passionateÂconcerns and on the impact on his life of the worlds of pain and suffering in which he has traveled. Kevin M. Cahill, M.D., is Director of the Institute of International Humanitarian Affairs at Fordham University and President of the Center for International Health and Cooperation in New York City. He is the author and editor of many books, including Human Security for All: A Tribute to Sergio Vieira de Mello and Technology for Humanitarian Action, both in the Fordham series International Humanitarian Affairs.

Customer Reviews:
Western Civilization book.......2005-10-01
This book arrived in fair condition. It arrived on time as promised. It was not bad for $7.00
Horrible textbook........2005-07-11
This has to be the worst textbook I have ever used in my life. Terms are not in bold, there are no review questions, and the authors do not provide footnotes with there sources. The book is impossible to Outline or even take notes on since it follows no coherent structure. Sometimes it will talk about the consequences of things, before it discuss's there causes. It also has numerous historical mistakes. Our teacher points them out every class, but some even I cna see on my own.
The book filled with typos. It says that nationalism challenged neo-platonism. I think it means nominalism. Please do not use this as a main textbook for the course. You students will not do well.
Good historical reference material.......2004-06-12
There is good reason for this book being in it's fourteenth edition; it is comprehensive, balanced ,concise not overly laborious reading and a flat out good history book. I have a previous edition that I used to supplement teaching my students with and continue to use when helping my high school age son. The contributors are brainiacs, we're talking experts in their fields too. A couple of case in points, Lerner received his PH. D. from Princeton and is a professor who has authored several books. Meacham did his undergraduate work at Yale before doing his graduate work at Cambridge and Harvard. The book takes blocks of time like the Age of Absolutism, Intellectual Revolutions of the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries, The French Revolution and all the major developments of Western Civilization .There is just enough information to go in depth but not feel like you are overburdened with data. The modern world is also explored and contemporary Western Civilizations. There are aslo many colorful maps, pictures and illustrations to supplement the writing to enhance thelearning experience. A very helpful feature is subject titles along the sides of the paragraphs that correspond to the detailed information. This is helpful when you are seeking specific information on a subject and do not want to read pages and pages of information to find your facts. I would highly recommend this book to any student of history or teacher of advanced middle school or high school courses on world history.

Customer Reviews:
excellent context.......2003-12-31
This is a particularly clear-minded view of the progression of mathematical history. After reading this I became convinced that understanding math requires a knowledge of its history. I don't believe that this is true for science. The great advance of twentieth century mathematics is its achievement of higher levels of abstraction. But without a knowledge of history this abstraction is just puff. This book leaves off at 1945.
Pocket size Bible of History of Mathematics.......2000-08-14
If you are looking for a book that clearly describes the evolution of mathematics, you don't need to try more, this book is for you.
Struik's book, "A Concise History of Mathematics", is a well documented book with the main contributions, dates, and names of the people involved in the development of mathematics from their ancients origins until the first half of the 20th century.
Struik's style of writing is clear and, how the title of the book says, concise, highlighting the relevant discoveries made in the field and relating them in order to give a better understanding of the subject.
Reading is easy for all people because Struik avoids to use formulas where it is not necessary, focusing more in the works of the great mathematicians and describing them of a comprehensible way.
Another excellent feature of the book is the great bibliography that contains, with a many references to other books not only in English, but in other languages also.
Somebody would hope to find more mathematical demonstrations and more illustrations, but this is not the objective of the book, contents in a single volume of 228 pages are the most important facts of the history of the mathematics, therefore, the relationship between cost and content is excellent.
A Concise History of Mathematics is a classical book, written by a world wide recognized author, of a clear and concise manner.
All people interested in this area of the mathematics must have this book in their shelf.

Book Description
This volume presents a record of mathematical developments in China over a period of more than 2000 years. It goes into greater detail than ever previously available in English. Because the emphasis in Chinese mathematics is on algorithms rather than proofs, readers will find results such as
Bezout's theorem and Horner's method appearing in a very different context from the familiar tradition of Euclidean deductive geometry. The Chinese always preferred algebraic methods, and by the 13th century A.D. they were the best algebraists in the world. The original Chinese point of view is
retained by the translators. They have supplemented the text with short explanatory comments and references to all relevant reference sources available in the West. An extensive bibliography is included, creating a work which will appeal to general readers interested in Chinese history as well as
historians of mathematics.

Book Description
Astronomy is one of the oldest sciences, and one which has repeatedly led to fundamental changes in our view of the world. This book covers the history of our study of the cosmos from prehistory to a survey of modern astronomy and astrophysics. It does not attempt to cover everything, but deliberately concentrates on the important themes and topics, including stellar astronomy in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries--the source of many important concepts in modern astronomy--and the Copernican revolution, which led to the challenge of ancient authorities in many areas other than astronomy. This is an essential text for students of the history of science and for students of astronomy who require a historical background to their studies.
Customer Reviews:
A status-quo history.......2004-05-30
I was disappointed greatly with the contents of the book. Hoskin and Gingerich peddle the old Eurocentric view of astronomy. Short shrift is given to the views of scholars such as R.R. Newton and Dennis Rawlins. The presentation of material is very shallow, and the tangled web behind the advances of Kepler and others is not presented. It is like whitewash.
Excellent scientific history.......2000-09-06
Although this appears to be in a coffee-table format, this book covers both history and technical aspects of the subject without oversimplification. Side issues are explained in detail. Illustrations are well-presented, clear and in color when appropriate; very useful in this largely visual subject. The very best history of astronomy I have found.

Book Description
This provocative, focused, and succinct new text addresses two issues integral to the study of the philosophy of science: the rationality of science and the realism question. Students are invited to think deeply about salient issues as they explore collections of cases and examples, beginning by considering the founding document of modern science, Copernicus’s On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres, and including discussions of other key readings such as Thomas Kuhn’s The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. Author Keith Parsons challenges students’ thinking, offering his own views while providing a solid foundation for debate.

Book Description
Who are the pioneering scientists who have contributed to our knowledge about birds? How has the science of ornithology developed over the past centuries? This educational and entertaining book explores the history of ornithology from the earliest times to the present day, vividly describing the ornithologists who have been most influential in their field and the discoveries they have made. The book begins by surveying writings on birds by the ancient Chinese, Greeks, and Romans and by individuals writing during the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the Age of Exploration. It then assesses such ornithological pioneers as Linnaeus, Brisson, and Buffon, whose contributions to the foundations of ornithological systematics and collecting are seminal. Subsequent chapters discuss the expeditions of the eighteenth century; the work of the Germans and the Dutch; the beginnings of ornithology in America; the development of nineteenth-century systems of classification; the new theories that emerged from the Far East; and the great advances made in the twentieth century. Attractively illustrated and engagingly written, the book will be of great interest to all birders and naturalists.

Book Description
This book provides a comprehensive overview of the history of ideas about the sun and the stars, from antiquity to modern times. Two theoretical astrophysicists who have been active in the field since the early 1960s tell the story in fluent prose. About half of the book covers most of the theoretical research done from 1940 to the close of the twentieth century, a large body of work that has to date been little explored by historians.
The first chapter, which outlines the period from about 3000 B.C. to 1700 A.D., shows that at every stage in history human beings have had a particular understanding of the sun and stars, and that this has continually evolved over the centuries. Next the authors systematically address the immense mass of observations astronomy accumulated from the early seventeenth century to the early twentieth. The remaining four chapters examine the history of the field from the physicists perspective, the emphasis being on theoretical work from the mid-1840s to the late 1990s--from thermodynamics to quantum mechanics, from nuclear physics and magnetohydrodynamics to the remarkable advances through to the late 1960s, and finally, to more recent theoretical work. Intended mainly for students and teachers of astronomy, this book will also be a useful reference for practicing astronomers and scientifically curious general readers.

Book Description
Pollution, deforestation, elimination of species, greenhouse gases, depletion of the ozone layer. These results of human activity are, as most people would agree, undesirable. But why? What is the value of the natural environment that would be lost if this environment were destroyed or seriously degraded? This is the central question of environmental ethics and the focus of this book. This book argues that to properly understand how and why nature can have value requires a radical revision of the way philosophy is understood and practiced.
