Not bad, but..........2007-10-08
Why can't they publish a book like this with a spiral binding? With a paperback binding it makes it impossible to have a guitar in your hands and the book open to a particular page. I went to OfficeMax and had the binding cut off and a spiral binding put in its place. There...much better now...
Bad Print.......2007-02-23
My copy's print was so bad, it was not readable in areas. I sent mine back. I can't say anything about the accuracy of the tab.
++++++.......2005-10-14
This book is great to learning a different techinique of guitar playing - namely Gilmour style - but isn't the best if you're looking to play the licks just like in the album. This is in part because their isn't only one guitar part, despite the fact that there is but one guitarist (there is more than one track of guitar). And, as in any tablature book I have studied, the authors put in every detail that was played in a single song. I imagine they sit down and listen over and over to a song and find every little thing played. I wish that they wouldn't do this, because I think it's better for players to just know the basic things that are played, and then just jam.
But, I deffinetly recomend this for any aspiring guitarists, and those who are Floyd fans, obviously.
we all know gilmour makes the band.......2005-10-13
rodger did nothing, david makes floyd FLOYD. Lets not get crazy with the rodger talk. i suggest practicing bends and whammy bar pulls before looking at this
Influential Band, Influential Book.......2003-04-11
This book is a must have for all Floyd fans. Has all the best tunes from the album.

Not Worth Your Time Or Money.......2004-06-27
Other than the bloated first chapter, a Floyd free history of the album and concept album, there's nothing here you cannot get from Nick Schaffner's "A Saucerful of Secrets." Despite the pedigree of the authors, there is no interpretation, no insight offered here on the album, show or film. Again, get the better and more comprehensive Schaffner for history, and if you want criticism, get Phil Rosen's "Which One's Pink."
Pink Floyd's The Wall - In the Studio, On Stage and On Scree.......2004-06-11
With 2004 looking like providing the Pink Floyd fan with a full diet of readable material, first served is Jeff Bench's and Daniel O'Brien's book, Pink Floyd's The Wall - In the Studio, On Stage and On Screen. The ambitions set out by the authors was to focus on all aspects of Pink Floyd's masterpiece, 'The Wall. The book has been released as a soft back and is a handy 9" x 7" size with a total of 142 pages. Jeff Bench is a media historian, journalist and magazine editor. He has also taught at several of London's art colleges. Daniel O'Brien's recent books include Cameron Diaz, The Hannibal Files and Spooky Encounters. The book describes the making of 'The Wall - both album and the film - and place it within the context of the changes in music and society which the album reflects.
The book is broken into five sections, the first being the preface: The Wall in context, here the authors offer up a guide to Pink Floyd's history and their ability to straddle such diverse times as 'Swinging London to Punk. "Pink Floyd were there for the whole trip, from Carnaby Street to the Brixton riots." We are also advised that, "Pink Floyd's music is a barometer of Britain's deteriorating mental health in the Seventies, but there music is also a classic illustration of the constantly expanding musical horizons of that decade." Reading the preface you realise that the authors are taking the subject very seriously and it is well thought out.
Next we enter chapter 1: From LP to Concept Album. This chapter takes you on a journey through recorded music. Pink Floyd as a topic, is dropped for the 25 odd pages as we are reminded of the impact both Bob Dylan and The Beatles had on the youth culture. Only on the last page of this chapter are we reintroduced to Pink Floyd, as they come out of underground and achieve commercial success with 'Dark Side of the Moon. The chapter does achieve its goal of explaining, just where the idea of a concept album came from but for me was far too long winded.
With almost relief, chapter 2, boasts a 2 page spread of the band circa 1973, this image re-concentrates the mind and reminds us just why we are reading the book. Chapter 2: Building the Wall. "The Wall was the next step towards what could be considered the third, and last, significant phase in the group's career." We are then taking back in time to the Syd years which are describes sensibly enough as phase 1. Dave Gilmour's entrance in early 1968 is acknowledged as being the start of phase 2 and the chapter takes great strides to get us to the recording of 'The Wall. I thought the writing was very well formulated and it read as pretty much accurate, although relying on the band members statements via interviews has proved over the years, unreliable to say the least. The authors had well researched the recording periods of 'The Wall and as the chapter progressed I found myself intrigued by the message. Some recent books have either sub consciously or by political stance sided with Roger Waters or David Gilmour. This book avoids this pitfall and perhaps Bob Ezrin's wisdom captures the mood, "So, Comfortably Numb, is a true collaboration - it's David's music, Roger's lyric and my orchestral chart."
Chapter 3: The Wall On Screen. Pink Floyd had provided film scores earlier in their career, but Roger felt, 'The Wall could work as a feature film. The first part of this chapter looks at the films Pink Floyd had worked on from, 'Tonight Let's Make Love in London (1967) to the concert (albeit without an audience) 'Live at Pompeii. Depending on how much you've read before, some of the stories surrounding the film may sound repetitive. But, this book is about, 'The Wall and it collates the stories well and pretty accurately. At times I felt some main players could have been approached to update their story but this doesn't happen. The chapter does feel up-to-date with commentary on 'The Wall DVD and the recent. 'Series 1 collection of Wall models. The chapter closes with a reflective Alan Parker quote, " At the heart of it, it's Roger's primal scream. It's Roger's piece and it's Roger's madness." Indeed!
The book closes with the epilogue: The Wall Outside. Here the book looks at events post, 'The Wall, Pink Floyd albums not featuring Roger Waters and Roger's live event The Wall - Berlin '90. Even Roger's recent, 'In the Flesh tours and his invitation for Nick Mason to play at the London concerts in 2002 are highlighted. The book closes with the sentence, "The Wall that once separated Roger Waters from his audiences has, it seems, finally been demolished."
The book proves one thing Roger Waters/Pink Floyd 'The Wall is an endearing piece of recorded art. Still some 25 years after it's release, the work demands attention and finds new fans year on year. This book, didn't set out to understand the phenomenon it simply traces the work back and tells the story. Personally I enjoyed it and its price (only £12.99 R.R.P.) makes it an affordable entry to the album's past. While avoiding taking sides through out, no one can take way the fact that, 'The Wall was Roger's vision nailed into reality by the band Pink Floyd. The fact that this won't be the last book ever written on the album 'The Wall, shows that interest will continue long into the future with each successive generation trying to understand the albums complex issues.

Informative and fun.......2007-01-13
I very much enjoyed this book and could not put it down. I own everything from Dark Side on but still read the early stuff to get a good idea of the early Syd Barrett stuff. I found it all very interesting as I love Pink Floyd. I, like other readers, noticed misidentifying Roger Waters which was quite surprising. I have been a Pink Floyd "fanatic" for a long time but most of the stories were not "old" to me. I expected a little more indepth understanding of the lyrics but it was still insightful. I would definitely recommend this book to the serious Floyd fan.
Pretty good.......2006-11-29
It featured loads of great photos and the information on which inspired the songs is interesting although there a few silly mistakes in the book. For example, in one of the Roger Waters' earlier shots the book says it's 'a young Dave Gilmour' and some of Waters' quotes on the Wish You Were Here album are wrongly assumed they're originally by David, which is not true.
In a nutshell - very good. It doesn't reach the five star rating though due to the errors pointed above.
4/5.
Oh by the way, which one is Pink?.......2006-09-05
Although it was Hendrix who launched me on the lysergic odessy, Syd Barrett was already a basket case when i flirted with insanity as i strove to become a member of the imaginary Acid Hall of Fame, and i took copious amounts [approximately 7,033 lifetime hits] as i howled at the moon and DARED the gods to punish me!
"Electric Ladyland" was soon usurped by "Dark Side of the Moon," but it was "The Wall" that would become one of the defining movies of my life...the album was just a soundtrack until it was released on VHS, and then DVD...and i've seen it almost 200 times STRAIGHT when it came out in those formats, the hallucinogenic well had dried up.
So it should come as no surprise that Pink Floyd was used as a metaphor in my book, "Jew Girl," but had i read this book by Cliff Jones first, it would have been used a lot differently!
Having always had an interest in the behind the scenes goings on of other musicains, i was more cognizant of what happened with Dylan, Hendrix, Patti Smith, Melanie and the Stones than with Floyd...but that was okay, since Pink Floyd wasn't really a rock band in my mind, but rather the answer to the question, 'Are you experienced?'
In his preface Mr Jones discusses the impossibility of getting interviews with Pink Floyd--something a fan for over thirty years like myself takes for granted--by the time i got into them they had already erected the wall. So Cliff Jones makes no promises that he'll get into the psyche behind the songs--he flatly states that all he'll try to do is give you some behind the scenes looks at the recording process--and he delivers in spades!
Although repetitive at times, the book is chock full studio tales that maybe a hardcore fan might know of, but more than half of them are news to me. And always underlying what's going on is the tragic tale of Syd, the psychotic Brian Jones who was one of the only rock n' roll casualties to have died without the benefit of burial from the Sixties excesses that left MY generation with a swath of dead heroes.
Mr Jones DOES get to be a bit Simon Cowellish at times, but because of the wealth of information he provides, you tend to overlook those niggling little forays into music criticism.
And speaking of niggling, since i refuse to use the PC term for one of the klans favourite derogatory words, he ALMOST gives you the name of the British film that has a dog of the same name, which i'm sure everyone who has seen "The Wall" movie have been going bananas trying to figure out. He lists the movie as "The Battle of Britain," but with a little googling, i found out that it's a 1954 movie called "The Dambusters" (available on Amazon UK...haven't checked if it's available here in the US).
There's one thing i should warn you about--IF you don't have Floyd's whole oeuvre, after reading this book you'll be compelled to go out and buy it!!!
Mandatory Floyd!.......2003-11-12
All Pink Floyd fans must have this book. It is that simple. Through interviews and research, Cliff Jones documents the stories behind the songs that made Pink Floyd one of the most influencial bands in rock history. Though this book, readers will know what even the most obscure Pink Floyd song is about.
With over 200 pictures, the book is worth the price alone. Even the most dedicated fans can learn something from this book. While some of the stories behind the songs are well documented, such as the story behind "Wish You Were Here", other stories are not nearly as well known. Particularly, the information about the three most recent Pink Floyd cd's is documented sparingly. Jones addresses these Floyd releases appropriately.
I particularly enjoyed reading about the early Floyd releases. It is difficult to find quality information about the pre-Dark Side of the Moon releases. Cliff Jones effectively tells the stories behind the music of Pink FLoyd.
Not too shabby.......2003-04-11
The title of Cliff Jones' book is enough to catch the eye of any Pink Floyd fan, as it did for me. I was immediately intrigued, therefore I decided I had to own this book. I got just about everything that I had expected. Whether you're an avid listener of the band or just starting out, all in all it is pretty informative. However, the 100-something page book is not perfectly written. I couldn't help but notice typos, and mis-identified photographs of the band, not to mention the author tends to go a little off track and start to ramble. If you know your Floyd, it's basically nothing new, although I feel that there is always somethign new to learn. If you're someone new to the group, it's a good book to start off with. Some of the rare black-and-white, and color photos make it worthy to be apart of any Floyd collection. In conclusion, after reading this book I found myself not only informed, but quite content as well. Despite a few spelling errors, I feel that it was money well spent.

Comfortably Numb - A History of .......2007-01-19
I've read many books on the Floyd and several on other Rock 'N Roll fronts, but I have not encountered anything quite to the level that this brings. While it delves into a Single Album by a Single Band you might think, "Why would I even care to read a 288 page book about one album?" Well it is much more than that. Strip the layers upon layers about the album and you have the story of Pink Floyd during these all important and traumatic years for the band itself. I was impressed to learn that Richard Wright had much more to do with the album than was previously known! In fact the band had much more to do with the overall playing on the album than was previously thought!
Vernon Fitch and Richard Mahon take you through a journey from the moment the concept of the Wall was formulated by Roger Waters to the dramatic climax in 1981 when the last concert was played. Couple that with the hundreds of amazing photos generously displayed on every page makes this a truly worth while endeavor. In my mind, it's an encyclopedia with a story line, a plot that was expertly told.
How many other books can claim the benefit AND blessings of Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Nick Mason, Gerald Scarfe, Bob Ezrin, James Guthrie, Phil Taylor et al? I think I can count them with one or two fingers. For a book not written by a band member, it may as well have been, that's how in depth the research and thought went into it. I can not say enough about it. Reading this book gives anyone a better understanding of one of rock's conceptual masterpieces. [.....]
A truly must own for any Floyd enthusiast!

Book Description
Director Alan Parker's intense and fully realized film interpretation of the English band's classic album, The Wall melds whimsical fantasy with dark Shakespearean drama. The film makes innovative use of sets, costumes, and special effects to create a unique surrealistic strangeness worthy of Luis Bunuel and Salvador Dali. Both disturbing and bedazzling, Pink Floyd: The Wall is a must-see film for any music lover. The Wall Live In Berlin DVD is set to be released on June 17, 2003 and action figures based on animation from the film Pink Floyd The Wall will be released in 2003.

DON'T BUY IT.......2004-02-05
This is a pathetic calendar. On the back the images are crisp and clear, yet when you open it the images are fuzzy and show the digital square pixels, and to top it off they don't even show the full image, they cut at least 1/3-1/2 of it by using a circular spotlight effect. Thus, only the inside of the spotlight/circle shows the 1/3-1/2 of the image advertised on the back of the calendar, with black surrounding the perimeter of the spotlight. Also, there is no info relating to Pink Floyd on any page or month or date. I called the distributor and told them I would never buy another product from them again.

Masterpiece.......2002-09-15
Superb work of Marxist historiography. Not a history, strictly speaking, but an essay on state forms in transition from the ancient slave societies of Greece and Rome to the fragmented monarchies of early medievalism. Stunning sweep, and a masterpiece of contemporary English prose which I believe will one day rank with Newman's Apologia Pro Vita Sua as a milestone in the evolution of literary English.
Rethinking ethnocentric historical materialism.......2002-06-27
Perry Anderson is a leading editor of 'New Left Review' and well-known Marxist historian. This book is the first volume of a two part work. The second volume is 'Lineage of the Absolutist State' Those two volumes cover the whole history of pre-capitalist Western world from Greco-Roman antiquity to Absolutist monarchies. It's incredible how one research could cover that range of time. Moreover, he maintains his distinctive perspective throughout two volumes. His problem is the same one as Marx and Weber posed: the formation of capitalism. But Anderson's problem is somewhat narrower: why did the capitalism emerge in Europe rather than in more advanced China, India or Islamic world at that time? To answer the question, he traces back to Greco-Roman antiquity. His answer in the first volume is this: it's because the West was formulated through combining antiquity and feudalism. It doesn't seem distinctive at all. But he questioned in the line of Marxist tradition and his answer could have meaning only in that line. his terminology is different from traditional Marxist one. He recasts the conventional definition of antiquity and feudalism: he contends that the antiquity and the Western feudalism had idiosyncratic modes of production. For example, the slavery itself, which was the dominant mode of production in antiquity, could be common in that time. But outside Greco-Roman world, the slavery was not dominant mode of production. Moreover, the Western feudalism was formed through fusing totally different modes of production: a synthesis of Greco-Roman society and German society. So features of Western feudalism are restricted to its own context, not catholic ones. If we treat it as universal, Anderson argues, we can't explain why the capitalism merged only in the West. To prove his proposition, Anderson compares the different paths Western Europe and Eastern Europe followed. Furthermore, he redefines the relationship between superstructure and infrastructure. As Braudel maintained with his jargon, longue duree, Anderson asserts that components of superstructure, such as the state, religion, value, law, convention, also affect the mode of production.
Book Description
To be alive today is to be confronted by the products of science--from aspirin, refrigeration, electric light and the telephone, to the airplane and the computer--to name just a few. In addition to beneficial medicines and life enhancing discoveries, however, scientific research also has led to many dangerous developments, such as the machine gun and the atom bomb. Science explores all of these, telling the story of how observation and testing have changed daily life over the past 2500 years, along with how we understand the world, the cosmos, the body, and the mind. What is most fascinating for students first learning about scientific discovery, and what this book highlights so beautifully through presenting individual scientists, is the way in which simple observation--such as watching the weather, or an object fall--leads to a discovery that radically alters life in the world and our comprehension of how the natural world works.
An engaging and clearly explained book, full of pertinent quotations and anecdotes, Science tells a compelling story, inviting its readers to pursue its subject further.

Shows the Uncomfortable Rewards of Being a Great Scientist.......2007-02-18
So you've always wanted to discover something great and go down in history so everyone will always know your name. Turns out that many didn't lead comfortable lifestyles or never knew credit for their own discoveries - certainly not capitalistic rewards. A few examples:
Galileo Galilei died in prison because he wouldn't submit to religious dogma. Galileo had forged the modern approach to experimental and mathematical physics by breaking large problems down into smaller ones.
Nikola Tesla came to America as a penniless immigrant in 1884. He would sell his idea of alternating current to transmit electricity efficiently. Westinghouse bought the idea and become a powerhouse. Tesla would die penniless after receiving 800 patents.
Robert Oppenheimer would be stripped of his security clearance to prevent his work on the hydrogen bomb. Someone had accused him of being a Communist sympathizer. Oppenheimer had already successfully lead the Manhattan Project which concluded the second world war.
Rosalind Franklin discovered the fruitlessness of being a brilliant scientist and a woman. She would die of cancer while her colleague would steal credit for her discovery. Franklin had figured out the helical structure of DNA.
There are many more. This book is a dose of reality for anyone interested in the truth about science and scientists. Real and Brilliant.

Book Description
This graduate-level reference documents the results of two years of research into sustainable development in Scotland. Written for a broad audience, it reflects the growing recognition that current patterns of economic and social development are not sustainable, and that if we are to live within the constraints of our environment, we must find alternative paths of development. Beginning with simple definitions, principles, and the historical context, it presents examples of measuring sustainable development, environmental indicators, and economic and sociopolitical measures in other countries and a time series analysis for Scotland, then addresses the natural limits to development, the theory of sustainable corridors, and alternative approaches.
