Book Description

A new edition of the groundbreaking spiritual treasure, with a foreword by bestselling author Marianne Williamson .Since its original publication in 1949, In Search of the Miraculous has been hailed as the most valuable and reliable documentation of G. I. Gurdjieff's thoughts and universal view. This historic and influential work is considered by many to be a primer of mystical thought as expressed through the Work, a combination of Eastern philosophies that had for centuries been passed on orally from teacher to student. Gurdjieff's goal, to introduce the Work to the West, attracted many students, among them Ouspensky, an established mathematician, journalist, and, with the publication of In Search of the Miraculous, an eloquent and persuasive proselyte.Ouspensky describes Gurdjieff's teachings in fascinating and accessible detail, providing what has proven to be a stellar introduction to the universal view of both student and teacher. It goes without saying that In Search of the Miraculous has inspired great thinkers and writers of ensuing spiritual movements, including Marianne Williamson, the highly acclaimed author of A Return to Love and Illuminata. In a new and never-before-published foreword, Williamson shares the influence of Ouspensky's book and Gurdjieff's teachings on the New Thought movement and her own life, providing a contemporary look at an already timeless classic.

5 out of 5 stars The most important book on Earth.......2007-10-17

For those of us, who don't only like to search but also to find, this is the most important book on Earth!

5 out of 5 stars A flowing journey.......2007-03-17

I have read this book twice. Once while in college, and then ten years later.
If you are searching for the meaning of your journey - this book will help serve as a guide. However, be ready to question your beliefs and habitual lifestyle. Also, be prepared to read a page, or perhaps a profound paragraph or two - and then feel compelled to set the book down as you experience a visceral shift in the way you think and live your existence. Even though this book emphasizes at various times the need for you to find a "teacher" as a guide to help with your evolution - it is my opinion that this serves as a metaphor for discovering the teacher within. This book is a slow read - and some parts may seem perplexing or confusing, especially the sacred laws of geometry and mathematics (i.e.: The law of seven) - but I recommend you continue with your reading effort; if you do so - you will be rewarded.
Since I am an environmental author and avid reader - I found this book helpful in connecting the dots relative to the lives and writings of some of the world's most profound teachers and scientists.

5 out of 5 stars An Awakening Experience.......2007-02-24

People interact with each other purely in a mechanical way. Most of them prefer this way of "life", going about their business totally asleep. But there are a few who want to wake up, who want to BE. It's not easy. It never is. But if you are one who wants to truly BE, then this book will help you on your first steps to the path; but only if you are willing to "see".

This book tells "how it is", not a bunch of spellbinding fairy tales with rituals and magic spells. This is a book for the true student of Way.

5 out of 5 stars In Search of the Miraculous; Fragments of an Unknown Teaching.......2007-01-24

Of all the attempts made by Gurdjieff's pupils to introduce his evolutionary system of ideas through writing, In Search of the Miraculous arguably stands formost. First published in 1949, the book continues to be a real help to the work. It may be surprising to some that Ouspensky received from Gurdjieff the material organized in this book over a period of only three years, from 1915 to 1918. After his relatively brief but apparently intensive initiation into various aspects of the teaching, Ouspensky separated himself from his teacher for personal reasons while other pupils remained with Gurdjieff to receive advanced instruction for many years until Gurdjieff's death in 1949.

People continue to seek out the Gurdjieff work today under the influence of Ouspensky's extraordinary book. It should be required reading for anyone interested in Gurdjieff. The serious student, by entering into the practical work, which extends the process of learning beyond the intellectual study of ideas, may eventually come to discover what the book's subtitle expresses. Evidently charged with the power to influence in the mind an unprecedented vision of reality, the ideas Ouspensky detailed must be seen as "fragments" of a teaching meant to inform not only the mind but also the feeling, the body and ultimately the whole of oneself.

While the truths Gurdjieff wished for people to receive cannot be assimilated through intellectual study alone, these true ideas, if heard, may strike the first note of an octave of real understanding, the further development of which will require, among other things, a long and patient self-examination conducted under special conditions. The careful study of this book can be increasingly rewarding to the student who has entered into conditions of group work under the guidance of people specially prepared within the lineage of those to whom Gurdjieff left the task of transmitting his teaching.

4 out of 5 stars Fragments indeed.......2007-01-22

This book took very long to say very little. Many Gurdjieff students love it but I found it dissapointing. For every truth you get (self-remembering) you have to shake off a bunch of unnecessary rubish, (people existing to feed the moon to become a planet like earth). Take what u need and dont mistake all of it for truth just cuz some of it resonates.

        Book Description

Great Britain's geopolitical role has undergone many changes over the last four centuries. Once a maritime superpower and ruler of half the world, Britain now occupies an isolated position as an economically fragile island often at odds with her European neighbors.
Lawrence James has written a comprehensive, perceptive, and insighful history of the British Empire. Spanning the years from 1600 to the present day, this critically acclaimed book combines detailed scholarship with readable popular history.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful survey, for academic or layperson.......2007-01-08

This book was one of the first I read on the British Empire, a cure for the veritable itch of interest. The sheer volume of this book may be overwhelming for the casual reader of history, but it is full of insight and subtleties that enrich it for both experts and novices alike. It has academic value as well, not least in its well-compiled bibliography of secondary sources, and overall balanced account. This book is also a narrative, not an academic treatise, and it therefore accommodates the reader that is seeking a synthesis of the facts. As an introduction to the British Empire - from rise to fall - I have found it most useful. If you are only going to buy one book to buy on the British Empire, perhaps this should be it.

5 out of 5 stars Unsurpassed Survey Treatment.......2006-08-04

If a reader is seeking a reasonably concise (even at 600+ pages) treatment of the complete arc of the British Empire, this is the best I have come across. Other readers, more familiar with pivital episodes of that drama, should recognize that the work is, after all, a survey and does not purport to describe even the most significant of the empire's turning points (with the exception of India) in great detail. These many pages are a thoroughly enjoyable read for the simple reasons that Author James possesses an obvious command of his subject matter and writes in enviably understandable declarative sentences which should serve as models for other historians. It is interesting to compare and contrast this work with Niall Ferguson's "Empire", an equally readable and somewhat more provocative account of British world hegemony. Both are worth the read, and both provide object lessons regarding the Middle East which are not a little dispiriting at this moment when Israel is ramping up its invasion of Lebanon and Iraq appears inexorably headed toward civil war. Too bad only we history buffs seem to ponder works like these; apparently our political and military leaders don't have time for them, busy as they are fighting the "War on Terror". One can only hope that the lessons they learn in doing so won't be as painful and ultimately destructive of national pride, human and economic resources, and the capacity for doing good in the world as the British experience.

4 out of 5 stars Believe it or not, its too short........2006-07-07

It is hard to imagine a seven hundred-plus page book being too short, but here it is. This is one of those rare lengthy tomes that keeps your attention and, which is even rarer, whets your appetite for more. Reading Mr. James' book opens up a wide vista of other books to read: more detailed history of India, the South Pacific, the Spanish Main, etc.

Mr. James has a well developed talent for a style that is informative and entertaining. The chapters are numerous and fairly short and each one covers a different topic. There is quite a lot of referencing back and forth, but again Mr. James does a good job of keeping the threads of his Cat's Craddle from unravelling.

It is very clear the Mr. James has a great deal of knowledge about this subject but he does not become pedantic nor try to impress us with this knowledge. He did make me run for the dictionary once or twice, but that is always a pleasure because it means I've learnt a new word!

Though it seems funny to say, this book is too brief. It is a great introduction to the topic and the book will leave you wanting for more and, more importantly, it points you in the right direction. If you have any Anglophile in you, read this book.

4 out of 5 stars Great Overview of the British Empire.......2006-04-13

James's account of the British Empire is a great piece of scholarly work for anyone interested in British imperialism/colonialism. This is especially useful for those not wanting to spend time and money on the five volumes Oxford History of the British Empire. Of course the Oxford one is small compared to some of the others out there.

I particularly enjoyed James's use of artistic achievements to setup the historical context of the particular period he is discussing. His treatment of the less savory aspects of British imperialism is fair and balanced. Though he could probably have been a harsher critic on the British opium policy in India, China and Southeast Asia.

Overall, James gives the reader an excellent survey/overview of the British Empire. He even covers the Falkland War with some detail! For those amateur historians or generally interested in the British Empire this is a great one to pick up.

5 out of 5 stars Very complete and compelling.......2005-07-19

I knew very little about the history of the English Empire (I'm Italian), and this book told me everything I wanted to know.

          Book Description

Reinterpreting the first century of American history, Brendan McConville argues that colonial society developed a political culture marked by strong attachment to Great Britain's monarchs. This intense allegiance continued almost until the moment of independence, an event defined by an emotional break with the king. By reading American history forward from the seventeenth century rather than backward from the Revolution, McConville shows that political conflicts long assumed to foreshadow the events of 1776 were in fact fought out by factions who invoked competing visions of the king and appropriated royal rites rather than used abstract republican rights or pro-democratic proclamations. The American Revolution, McConville contends, emerged out of the fissure caused by the unstable mix of affective attachments to the king and a weak imperial government. Sure to provoke debate, The King's Three Faces offers a powerful counterthesis to the dominant American historiography.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Depraved and sordid history.......2003-12-05

James heroically captures the depravity of the British Empire. From the exploits of the King Henry V and his eight wives, to the definitive naval victories of Lord Horatio Nelson in the Hudson Bay, this magnificent tome is a must-read for anyone who enjoys provocative, seductive storytelling. James is particularly successful in his portrayal of the moral bankruptcy which heralded the fall of the "greatest empire on the face of this earth. EVER."

4 out of 5 stars no guilt, no tears, and no longer an empire.......2001-03-28

At 350 pages the book has shrunk by half from the earlier edition. This version is also very heavily illustrated with just about every page containing at least one of the following: photograph, painting, map, or some other illustration of imperial memorabilia. Covering over 400 years of British rule across six continents and geographically covering half the globe, this book is a testament to an empire like no other the world has ever seen. That the British empire played a significant role in world history is beyond dispute; James says "what matters most today is that the British empire transformed the world...the present day demography, economy and political life of North America and much of Asia, the Middle East, Africa and the Pacific owes much to former British rule and influence".

With such an opinion on the importance of Britain, it may be difficult for James to maintain balance. To his credit he does so admirably. He acknowledges that the experience of empire changed the British character - "it encouraged a sense of superiority [and] also fostered racial arrogance". This, he says, was tempered in that "deeply rooted liberal and evangelical ideals produced a powerful sense of imperial duty and mission". Ah!, the benevolent colonists and missionaries, but what of rapacious conquerors? James concedes that while the empire exhibited "a moral sense and flexibility" of the British people there was also "ruthlessness and rapacity". He is quick to soften this blow to British sensibilities by saying that "Britain's empire was a moral force and one for the good". Even it's demise was handled with grace, a function of the gentility and sagacity of Britain's leaders, rather than as a response to the demand for independence from it's subjects. That seems to be how James sees it. "It was Attlee, Macleod and Macmillan who were, I believe the real heroes of imperial retreat which they handled with considerable political adroitness. Unlike France's, Portugal's, or Russia's, Britain's empire did not dissolve in tears".

While James occassionally falls off the balance beam, landing heavily on the side of the 'positive' morality of empire rather than the evil that men do in the name of God, King and country, he concentrates hard on not slipping on another tricky exercise. "I have been as careful as possible to sidestep the quagmire of post imperial guilt, that peculiar angst which has troubled the British and American intelligentsia for the past 30 or so years". Perhaps this is why Mr James seems a little piqued with former subjects apparent ungratefulness with history, especially since they are the direct beneficiaries. "The years which saw the dissolution of the empire witnessed the last great migrations it had made possible. From 1948 onwards large numbers of West Indians, Indians, and Pakistanis and smaller numbers of West Africans, Maltese and Cypriots settled in Britain". James states that the UK has been multiracial since 1970 and "for this reason alone, it is worth looking at the making and nature of empire"...his exasperation with attempts to multiculturalize history coming through..."the moreso since it's history and that of it's creators is being excised from school syllabuses".

It's interesting how multiculturalism affects texts in the UK - excising that deemed offensive - while the same forces here seek inclusion of all other histories. It's sterilized or diluted history; either way it's manufactured history. Whether we agree or disagree with James view, we should applaud attempts at opinionated history - it's the only kind that remains readable.

Scientific error, says Robert Park, "has a way of evolving ... from self-delusion to fraud. I use the term voodoo science to cover them all: pathological science, junk science, pseudoscience, and fraudulent science." In pathological science, scientists fool themselves. Junk science refers to scientists who use their expertise to befuddle and mislead others (usually juries or lawmakers). Pseudoscience has the trappings of science without any evidence. Fraudulent science is, well, fraud--old-fashioned lying.

Park is well-acquainted with voodoo science in all its forms. Since 1982, he has headed the Washington, D.C., office of the American Physical Society, and he has carried the flag for scientific rationality through cold fusion, homeopathy, "Star Wars," quantum healing, and sundry attempts to repeal the laws of thermodynamics. Park shows why a "disproportionate share of the science seen by the public is flawed" (because shaky science is more likely to skip past peer review and head straight for the media), and he gives a good tour of recent highlights in Voodoo. He has a rare ability to poke holes compassionately, without excoriating those taken in by their fondest wishes. Park is less forgiving of scientists (especially Edward Teller) when he thinks they've fallen down on the job, a job that should include helping the public separate the scientific wheat from the voodoo chaff. --Mary Ellen Curtin

                        Book Description

In a time of dazzling scientific progress, how are we to separate genuine breakthroughs from the noisy gaggle of false claims? Touching on everything from Deepak Chopra's "quantum alternative to growing old," and "free energy" machines, to unwarranted hype surrounding the International Space Station, Robert L. Park leads us through the dim back alleys of fringe science, down the gleaming corridors of Washington power and even into our evolutionary past to search out the origins of voodoo science. Along the way, Park offers some simple and engaging science lessons, showing us that you don't have to be a scientist to spot the foolish and fraudulent science that swirls around us. While incorporating elements of high humor, from Joe Newman and his Energy Machine to the French "sniffer plane," this hard-hitting account also tallies the cost: the billions spent by the public on worthless therapies, the tax dollars squandered on huge government projects that are doomed to fail, the investors bilked by schemes that violate the most fundamental laws of nature. But the greater cost is human: fear of imaginary dangers, reliance on magical cures, and above all, a sort of upside-down view of how the world works. To expose the forces that sustain voodoo science, Park closely examines the role of the media, the courts, bureaucrats and politicians, as well as the scientific community. Scientists, he observes, insist that the cure for voodoo science is to raise the general scientific literacy. But what is it that a scientifically literate society should know? It is not specific knowledge of science the public needs, Park argues, so much as a scientific world view--an understanding that we live in an orderly universe governed by natural laws that cannot be circumvented by magic or miracles.

4 out of 5 stars Acerbic and fun.......2007-07-05

The tone of this book is of someone who is very annoyed with people throwing away perfectly good money on things that have no basis in empirical reality. (Homeopathic medicine. Magnetic healing. Deepak Chopra.)

For some readers, the acerbic tone that the author takes might be just a bit over the top after the first 100 pages. Others might enjoy his wit and biting sarcasm all the way through.

The book does appear to be disorganized in that the author started some stories in the beginning, but didn't wait until several chapters later to resolve said stories. Perhaps he was trying to keep the reader interested.

His discussion of WHY the brain will believe something simple (but proximate) over something more rigorous (but difficult to follow) was good. It was JUST enough.

Lastly, I particularly liked his discussion of the placebo effect-- which is something that keeps a lot of acupuncturists and practitioners of Chinese traditional medicine employed.

Well worth the (second hand) purchase price.

4 out of 5 stars Science versus Pseudoscience.......2007-06-21

I found this book easy to read it isn't full of scientific terms it is more conversational. He spent a bit more time on cold fusion than I would have liked, but it is interesting how true science works and how much pseudoscience is taken for real science. It was a surprise and a pleasure to know the truth about some of the subjects and how the media manipulates information. After reading this book I realized that real scientists have been lost to the average person. I think the average person may not know how science really works. The average person has been exposed to so much junk science. You may be shocked at what the government has spent of your tax dollars on pseudoscience or maybe not until you find out how it happened. I enjoyed this book and I was pleased to find that there are still some real scientists that work hard to find the truth.

1 out of 5 stars Shameful, Demagogic, and Orwellian.......2007-06-01

I covered the symposium "Voodoo Science" as a press writer at the 2000 American Physical Society (APS) Convention in Minneapolis. Several researchers I knew were presenting the results of current cold fusion research in a symposium at that APS convention. Interestly enough, none of the speakers at the packed "Voodoo Science" symposium actually attended the presentations at the cold fusion forum earlier upstairs at the Mpls Convention Center. I was wearing my "Cold Fusion Times" press credentials at that gathering feeling very much like a rabbi on the set of "Triumph of the Will". Dr. Parks and his allies launched into an epic bashing of their pet peeves : Voodoo, the X Files, Cold Fusion, Psi, the Mars Underground, Cold Fusion, Ufology, Bigfoot, Cold Fusion, and so forth. Much of the proceedings looked to me as an orchestrated effort to get patents overturned that were the lynchpin of what would have been the first major cold fusion IPO through Meryl/Lynch. The Parks, led APS offensive was successful.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone should read this book.......2007-02-10

In particular, everyone who makes any policy decisions that deal with anything at all scientific should read this book carefully, digesting the concept of the scientific method and the ease of confusing people -- intentionally or not -- by ignoring well-proven scientific concepts in favor a faulty logic and misapplied statistics. And all of us laypeople can benefit from reading it so as to make sure those policy-makers are not led astray by the misinformed, the quacks, and the frauds who would have us believe they can break the laws of thermodynamics.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good; Needs More Chapters/Topics Though.......2006-12-20

This was a good book. It was recommended reading in my graduate program, and it should probably have been required. It basically explains how people can be sucked into believing stuff that goes against laws of nature. Much of the material is about issues that most people have heard of (power lines causing cancer for instance). It explains scientifically why the claims are not valid and gives a historical account of the debunking of them. My only criticism is that Park does spend a bit too much time on perpetual motion devices and could have covered some other topics.

                                      Book Description

The rate of adoption and the quality of Environmental Management Systems (EMS) at military facilities requires support and leadership from the highest levels of management, adequate resources to both develop and implement EMS, and an acknowledgement by the military commanders that personnel involved in EMS are an integral, important part of facilities and operations management. Future success will depend on the responsiveness and robustness of the initial systems as well as their enthusiastic acceptance by facility and operations managers.
The unifying, universal theme of this book is the effective communication of scientific results in a rapidly changing environment. Specific environmental issues related to operations at military facilities include encroachment on training ranges, implementation of effective EMS, pollution prevention in the military sector, and public participation, especially as this relates to the unique requirements of national security.
