Joining her husband in the fight to create a home out of a rugged stretch of sagebrush, rattlesnakes, and sand in eastern Oregon, Jane Kirkpatrick uneasily relinquishes the security of a professional career; the convenience of electricity, running water, and a phone line; and, perhaps most daunting, the pleasures of sporting a professional manicure. But the pull of the land is irresistible, and they dream of gathering their first harvest from a yet-to-be-planted vineyard.
Rather than the simple life they had envisioned, Jane and Jerry find themselves confronting flood and fire, government bureaucracies, and runaway calves, among other disheartening setbacks. Jane frequently questions the sanity of pioneering in this remote area, known as Starvation Point, and she fights against panic with each trip down the seven-mile, boulder-strewn, rut-carved “driveway” she calls “the reptile road,” which threatens to spill them into the ravine with every lurch of the truck.
But as she learns to navigate her new life, this novice rancher discovers that disappointment, isolation, and danger can’t compete with the generosity of their rural community, the strength of family bonds, and the faithfulness of the God who planted in their hearts the dream of carving a refuge out of an inhospitable land.

Jane Kirkpatrick does not abandon her characteristic figures of speech and writing that touches the soul for this nonfiction book. She tells the story of homesteading on Starvation Point, a remote area along the John Day River in Oregon, where life acquires new significance and she realizes her dream of becoming a writer. This book gives evidence that a person's writing comes from his or her life, the experiences and people encountered on the journey of life. Throughout this book one can find the origin of many events and characters in Jane's novels. Her memoir is a well-written story that gives insight into the pursuit of dreams.

This was the first book By Jane that I read. I was so impressed with her story and her writing that I immediately went out and bought her next trilogy. Upon reading the first of those books which I found as interesting, entertaining and historically accurate that I immediately went and bought every book she has ever written and am waiting for the next one.
This from a reader that doesn't read frilly stuff. It has to have substance and thought and be presented in a way that can keep you awake after a hard day of overtime.

Jane Kirkpatrick's writing carries with it the spirit of the pioneers. "Homestead" chronicles the Kirkpatricks' effort as a married couple to carve out a living from the dry, hard soil of eastern Oregon. They rough it as they go along, working toward a suitable well, a home with an actual foundation, and a road that doesn't rattle their teeth from their jaws.
A fitting testimony to the stubborn stamina and ingenuity of modern pioneers--and a bracing reminder of what our forbears went through--this book is also a heartwarming look into the meaning of family, faith, and friendship. Jane's love of life shines through every chapter, and yet there is no glossing over the troubles, large or small. This is an honest account of the price one pays to pave his or her own way.
While straightforward and economical, "Homestead" is a book that breathes with the fires of imagination and good humor. Jane's writing qualifies this story as a modern masterpiece. My wife and I read some of the chapters aloud to one another, and at a few points we were laughing to the point of tears; at others, we were moved to prayers of thankfulness for our creature comforts and to quiet hugs of love. This is a book for all to enjoy, and one that'll be read for years to come.

Not many people would have the courage to take on what Jane and Jerry do, as chronicled in Homestead by Jane Kirkpatrick. Whether it's shooting rattlesnakes or handling dog seizures, surviving a plane crash or navigating a treacherous road, chasing down run away calves or protecting watermelons from the onslaught of deer, the Kirkpatrick's seem to have faced and conquered it all. Such stories usually make for great fiction. The most startling realization, however, is that this story is real.
Jane recalls everything from the beginning, in this memoir of personal struggle and ultimate triumph. To move to an unbroken land and settle into its rhythms, to find a home among the wilds was a dream that she and her husband shared. More often than not, however, it seemed that this dream was as unmanageable as the road they had to travel just to get there. Everything kept going wrong. From broken machinery to tragedies of a larger scale, the Kirkpatricks found that these events kept drawing them closer to one another. For Jane, the call was to "go to the land and write." And write she did; not only this memoir, but nine novels as well. Settling the land was an adventure and a risk neither of them now regret making.
The book was well written with enough action and personal perspective to keep a reader interested. One can not help but feel Jane's concerns as she watches her husband's vehicle slip desperately close to a cliff edge, as she tries to reach out in the best way she knows how while feeling so inadequate. It isn't within herself or her husband that Mrs. Kirkpatrick finds the strength to carry on. That's the kind of strength she only finds in Christ.
Broken into four parts, the book reads quickly and leaves the reader feeling rejuvenated and wondering, "How on earth did these two manage to do this?" Homestead is a book that challenges while it encourages. It challenges the reader to grasp every day and turn it into something memorable; it encourages to keep eyes focused on the dream, whatever it may be, even when getting to it is tough. Incredible Book On World History.......2007-09-13
I am a high school student, and I use this book in my Gifted AP World History class. Now, normally, I am not exactly a fan of social studies courses, but this world history course, and hence, this book, are quite fascinating. I won't get on the topic of the hours of work assigned from outlining and doing all sorts of tasks for supposed maximum retention and comprehension, which are, unsurprisingly, less than fascinating. Despite these hours, the book itself and the content in it is a very authoritative and accurate view of world history. It hits all of the major points and does a very god job of presenting the material.

This is probably the most useful history book I've ever read. It was interesting and easy to comprehend. The other students with whom I spoke agree that as far as history books go, this is one of the best.
My only complaint is that, in my personal opinion, there is a lack of maps. Not exactly a huge deal, but sometimes maps make it easier to picture things in the past.

Boycott this book.......2003-12-16
This is an OK book, but unfortunately Bentley's predatory practice of reorganizing the same information or renumbering the chapters every year or so keeps students buying the expensive paperback, selling it back for far less to bookstores which then cannot sell it. The contents of the book are indistinguishable from other editions; you don't need the newest one.
If you need this book for a class, buy a used one and refuse to support Bentley's intellectual laziness.

The WORST history text I've ever had the displeasure of reading. My poor professor had just started, and they had selected this for history class without his consent. We hardly ever used it after the first 2 months. Professors, seriously, choose a different book. There are hundreds better than this.

A Clear Introduction to the Bootstrap & Applications.......2007-08-25
This is a well-written book, and I had the basic bootstrap notion figured-out and implemented within a few days, though it will be some time before I develop any serious depth of mastery of the material. For those unfamiliar with the bootstrap method, by a system of resampling from an existing sample of data it provides a means of establishing the standard error for pretty-near any statistical measure (like the standard error of the mean in traditional statistics), as well as the determination of general confidence intervals for those measures, even when the distribution of the data is non-gaussian or unknown. I do find the author's symbolic notation a bit confusing - perhaps TOO compact, and many of the symbolic expressions would really benefit from an associated clearly written paraphrasing (difficult for me to remember all the conventions after putting the book down for a few days). Still, to go from being barely aware of the technique to applying it to the data analysis in a current research project over a period of several weeks suggests that this text does a heck of a good job at conveying the intended introduction.

People might have many different reasons to use bootstrap techniques and they might have various backgrounds therefore this is a good book for readers that want to learn the bootstrap. If you do not have strong background in statistics then the practicals section will help you to programm and analyze the data. If you have background this book does show you the theory behind.
you get your money's worth.......2002-04-11
This book is loaded with good text book examples and covers a wide variety of bootstrap applications. It is great as a reference book on the bootstrap or as a course text at a graduate level. Chernick (1999) is a little more up-to-date and covers the classifcation error rate estimation problem that is not addressed in this text. Chernick (1999) also has many more references. Efron and Tibshirani (1993) is another fine text that is a little more intuition based with less mathematics. Fieller's problem with ratio estimation and some other gems are well covered in Efron and Tibshirani but not here. Davison and Hinkley do the best job on time series of any of the bootstrap books with details about moving block bootstrap and some interesting applications.

This book has an excellent ballance between practice and theory. It presents the bootstrap as the powerful tool it is through the ellucidation of practical issues. I strongly recommend this book for everyone interested in improving statistical practice.

High-resolution size-resolved mass concentration of organic and inorganic species present in/on sub-micron particles measured during the PACIFIC 2001 field study in the Lower Fraser Valley (LFV) are presented. The measurements of major particulate species (organics, sulfate, nitrate and ammonium) were made in situ and in real time at three different sites representing urban (Slocan Park), semi-rural (Sumas) and rural (Langley) areas, using two Aerodyne aerosol mass spectrometers (AMSs). The total non-refractory PM"1"."0 mass concentrations at the three sites were found to range from 0.12 to 24.50@mgm^-^3, with an average concentration of 4.76@mgm^-^3. A large variability in aerosol composition was observed in the LFV, depending on meteorological conditions. Generally, during southwesterly wind conditions, inorganic species accounted for 50% of total mass loadings in the LFV, while during stagnant conditions organic species made up the majority of the particle mass. The organic aerosol species exhibit a bimodal size distribution, while the inorganic species are in most cases confined to the accumulation mode centered around 400nm. Background sulfate levels of ~1@mgm^-^3 were observed in the LFV during the entire campaign. Transport is found to be an important factor controlling the composition of sulfate in the LFV. Several photochemical events leading to the observation of substantial increases of sulfate in the LFV were also identified. Many of these events involve sulfate-dominated growth of small particles and appear to occur on a regional scale within the LFV.

An overview of the two FEBUKO aerosol-cloud interaction field experiments in the Thuringer Wald (Germany) in October 2001 and 2002 and the corresponding modelling project MODMEP is given. Experimentally, a variety of measurement methods were deployed to probe the gas phase, particles and cloud droplets at three sites upwind, downwind and within an orographic cloud with special emphasis on the budgets and interconversions of organic gas and particle phase constituents. Out of a total of 14 sampling periods within 30 cloud events three events (EI, EII and EIII) are selected for detailed analysis. At various occasions an impact of the cloud process on particle chemical composition such as on the organic compounds content, sulphate and nitrate and also on particle size distributions and particle mass is observed. Moreover, direct phase transfer of polar organic compound from the gas phase is found to be very important for the understanding of cloudwater composition. For the modelling side, a main result of the MODMEP project is the development of a cloud model, which combines a complex multiphase chemistry with detailed microphysics. Both components are described in a fine-resolved particle/drop spectrum. New numerical methods are developed for an efficient solution of the entire complex model. A further development of the CAPRAM mechanism has lead to a more detailed description of tropospheric aqueous phase organic chemistry. In parallel, effective tools for the reduction of highly complex reaction schemes are provided. Techniques are provided and tested which allow the description of complex multiphase chemistry and of detailed microphysics in multidimensional chemistry-transport models.

The accurate and efficient description of aerosol microphysical and chemical processes is required for the assessment of radiative and chemical effects of natural and anthropogenic atmospheric aerosols. The combined modeling of microphysical and chemical processes in the gas and aqueous phase such as meteorological changes, transformation of chemical species in the gas and liquid phase and the transfer of species from one phase to the other is required. Since the aforementioned processes proceed on similar time scales the usual time splitting schemes which perform process by process in a sequential order are not appropriate. In contrast to other approaches where a microphysical and a cloud chemistry model are coupled, the new approach treats both processes in a unified way both from the modeling and numerical point of view. It is argued that this new model type is better suited for incorporation in multidimensional atmospheric and transport models. Essential parts of the model are outlined. The differential equations are discretized in mass space by a discontinuous Galerkin method and integrated after that in time by an implicit-explicit time integration scheme. Numerous simulations are performed to show the reliability of the new approach. The Eulerian fixed grid approach is compared with a 2000 bin moving simulation to demonstrate the merits and demerits of a fixed grid.
