Of what do we write when we write of love? In Bob Smith's case, it is Shakespeare's poems and plays. Hamlet's Dresser braids two strands of his life into a modest, heartbreaking, and soaringly affirmative memoir. A bookish, lonely child, his crush on the Bard's work became love when, as an alienated teenager, he joined the American Shakespeare Theatre as Hamlet's dresser. In time he would dress other characters, perform in small roles, become a coach and a watcher, and eventually lead senior citizens' groups in Shakespeare-appreciation courses. But this ecstatic marriage was haunted by his sad, contorted childhood: an increasingly dysfunctional mother, a distant father, and Caroline, his profoundly retarded sister. "Art," he writes, "can be a brutal thing, not just some decoration placed over the truth, but the truth itself." Smith's prose is bluntly ineffable: a rundown theatre looks like "Miss Havisham's bride cake" and the first teacher who didn't like him was "Miss Shumaker. It was right after I stopped pleasing everybody." The book is thick with short passages from Shakespeare. Placed in perfect context, they leap from the pages, abrupt as panoramic pop-ups. --H. O'Billovich

Book Description

The true story of a boy whose life was saved by literature, Hamlet's Dresser is a portrait of a person made whole by art. Bob Smith's childhood was a fragile and lonely one, spent largely caring for his handicapped sister, Carolyn. But at age ten, his local librarian gave him a copy of Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice, and it transformed him. In Bob's first look at Shakespeare's penetrating language -- "In sooth I know not why I am so sad" -- he had found a window through which to view the world. Years later, when the American Shakespeare Festival moved into Stratford and Smith was hired as Hamlet's dresser, his life's passion took shape.

Blending tragedy and comedy, Smith gracefully weaves together his childhood memories with his experiences backstage and teaching the plays. The result is a gorgeous, tender, infectious book about the restorative powers of literature and art.

4 out of 5 stars A very pleasing first novel.......2007-07-28

I have just finished reading Bob Smith's extraordinary memoir, and what a wonderful read it was. Very, very impressive. His story of growing up a solitary, lonely boy with a severely mentally and physically handicapped younger sister tugs at the heartstrings and makes for some harrowing reading, particularly the passages that describe his sister, Carolyn, as a young girl. I enjoyed his writing style, particularly the way he wove situation appropriate Shakespearean passages into the narrative. I also liked his passages describing his interactions with the senior citizens he taught Shakespeare to. One thing I was dissatisfied with, though, was why it took him four decades to reconcile with his sister. I did not feel that Smith spent enough time explaining or justifying why he left it so long, given that his guilt over the "abandonment" of his sister was so intense. I think he should have spent more time explaining this. However, that is a minor quibble. As a memoir, it is absolutely marvellous, evocative and gripping from page one. Highly, highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Hamlet's Dresser.......2007-05-16

I was born and raised in Stratford, CT., and I wanted to read the book because of the author's association with Stratford. But I found I loved the book for other reasons also, his honesty about himself and his family and his ability to let the reader understand how he overcame the difficulties in his life. I have passed it on to family members to read.

4 out of 5 stars A Story of Yearning and Maturity.......2006-07-02

Mr. Smith's relationship with his sister so reminds me of Tom and Laura in "The Glass Menagerie" -- it has that kind of sensitivity and heartbreak about it. In an age where a lot of memoirs seem so sensational and motivated by a kind of "tell all," Smith takes his time, patiently weaving his inner with his outer life, seamlessly moving from past to present. His compassion for the stories of others (and for Shakespeare's stories) gives him the compassion to tell his own. I found his story -- the way he finds consolation in Shakespeare and in the theatre and the way he gives back -- very touching. I loved when he was offered a non-speaking role in "Richard II" at Stratford in his youth, he jumps at it, saying that after all, he didn't want to say lines, he wanted to hear them! As I finished the book, I felt so glad this man was out there in Connecticut -- his sweet soul a sort of tonic. While everyone else is busy talking, this man, even in writing, seems to be listening.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Pass Through Another Life.......2004-10-22

This memoir is incredibly heart felt, sensitive and beautiful. Interspersed with Shakespeare's words, and Smith's experiences sharing them with New York City's oldest people, as well as his experience with Shakespeare on stage is a pained and moving life.
This is a remarkable book for anyone who identifies with the social/communal feel of life in the theatre, or artists for that matter. As well, anybody who knows the outside of an easy going life, alienation, deep guilt, a stilted family life, and the strain and sublime beauty of mental retardation.
I feel thankful after reading this. Smith illuminates the simple beauty of a daily train ride into the city, the warmth and intensity of being an off stage dresser, the joy of being with young actors and artists, and the sweetness of giving to older folks, and finding out that they need vitality and art as much as anyone. Great for actors and theatre lovers!

2 out of 5 stars Needed more Shakespeare.......2004-06-04

I picked up this memoir based on a blurb that mentioned the author's connection to the Stratford, Connecticut Shakespeare festival. Having had a single opportunity to attend this (Christopher Walken's Hamlet!) event, I was hoping for some insight and history of the event. Instead, I found out far too much about Smith's problems; of his difficulties coping with a family that was overwhelmed by having a severely disabled child in the home (Smith's sister), and very little about Stratford's festival. Well, shame on me for buying into a blurb, but I still found the book very disappointing. Focusing basically on his youth, and his later contributions to the community by running Shakespeare reading groups at senior centers in NYC, HAMLET'S DRESSER, needs far more Shakespeare. When Shakespeare does appear, the book comes to life. The joy senior citizens get from the reading groups, Smith's fascination with Shakespeare that led to a life immersed in his works, and especially in the sections where Smith discusses the actors he had an opportunity to work with is where this book truly becomes interesting. Katherine Hepburn, June Havoc, and Bert Lahr all make memorable appearances. The chapter where Smith discusses going on tour with Lahr gives the reader a wonderful glimpse into what it is like to work with a talented yet irascible actor on the road with all of its joys and pitfalls. Sadly, there are not enough of these journeys in this book. I feel some empathy for Smith's trials and tribulations, yet they didn't make for interesting reading. The troubled tales of his youth seem better suited to a therapist's office as opposed to a memoir. They truly pale in comparison to his tales of the theater, which when shared with the reader make for some fine storytelling. If the focus had stayed with Shakespeare and the theater I feel this could have been a wonderful book, as it stands it is a flawed a bit boring overall.

From the Publisher Bob Smith grew up in a town named for Shakespeare's birthplace: Stratford, Connecticut. His troubled childhood was spent in a struggle to help his devastated parents care for his severely retarded sister. But at age ten, Smith stumbled onto a line from The Merchant of Venice: "In sooth I know not why I am so sad." In the language of Shakespeare, he had found a window through which to view the world. When he was a teenager, the American Shakespeare Festival moved into Stratford and Smith became Hamlet's dresser. As he watched the plays from backstage, his life's passion took shape. "I was a lonely, screwed-up kid, but the circus had come to town," Smith writes. "It had put up its strange tent, and I was being seduced to run away with it." A few years later, he left home to travel with the Shakespeare Festival, and in the decades since, without a college credit to his name, he has taught the plays in universities and acting schools and prisons. For the past several years, he has probed the texts with thousands of the elderly in senior centers all over Manhattan. Here, in gorgeous, tender, and lyrical prose, Smith tells the story of a life shaped by poetry. Melding tragedy and comedy, he gracefully weaves together the stories of his bittersweet childhood, his poignant experiences with the old people, and dozens of illuminating passages and scenes from Shakespeare's plays. Throughout, Bob's sweet, tortured sister plays both the beautiful Ophelia and the ghost to Bob's Hamlet, haunting the book with heartrending power.

4 out of 5 stars Poetic and sad.......2007-08-15

This memoir that caught my eye at the library and I checked it out to see if it actually has anything to do with Hamlet. It does.

The author (who is the reader) is a Shakespeare aficionado who enjoys reading to old people. (He uses the term "old people" often, never calls them elderly or mature or some other euphemism). He also has a severely retarded younger sister.

The book is so lyrical and he reads it so well that you can see how he makes Shakespeare accessible by reading it aloud. It's a pretty heartbreaking story, but told poetically, with the repetition of phrases and the interspersing of Shakespearean quotes. Maybe some of the language is overly florid, but it works.

I'd like to listen to him read entire plays.

1 out of 5 stars Too subjective to be used for objective historical study.......2007-10-04

I bought this book for my world history class this semester, and while I'm only halfway through the book, there is no way it could possibly redeem itself.

Although it does give lots of good information, it rarely includes dates with its facts and its A-sides always get off track by discussing meaningless information that has nothing to do with the readings.

To make matters worse the book is completely obsessed with every cult/religion/sect that pops up in the dates covered - not by telling you the facts (the effect on history, society, etc) but instead by spends page after quoting irrelevant religious scriptures and texts. It even spends time telling bible stories - like the story of Paul getting blinded on the road and treats it like it really happened, God and all! Then it does a flip side and tells stories of might and magic with India's Gods. Want to know about the monkey king of china? It's in here too! In fact, this is a history book and a history of never-never land, (peter pan and pals almost made it, but they saved that for the next edition)

It's also obsessed with writings that are completely meaningless to the period - it wastes several trees worth of paper with excepts from completely unknown novels written by nobodies that had no effect on history whatsoever - the only people that have read these writings to date are the writers, the archeologists who dug it up, and moron who put it in the textbook (not to mention the unfortunate students who have to read the textbooks.) And it wouldn't be that bad if it was in some historical context, like explaining how The Decameron made such an impact on history, maybe tell us what the story was generally about - that much makes sense. But publishing page after page of the book? That's just an attempt to make the book thicker! (Note - The Decameron example is not in the book that I know of, that was just an example of how this book operates.)

If you want an objective lesson in world history, look elsewhere.

If you want to know the history of religions, cults, and sects, along with a few fairy tails, (both divinely inspired and fancy storytelling), this is definitely for you.

*Also, excuse the sarcasm, but this book was a real letdown.

with so many tiny tidbits of interesting information stuck in here and there it was a learning experience just reading the special highlights throughout the book. There were useful lists of important dates and happenings throughout each chapter and even suggested websites relating to each chapter's material for further information. The way the book was written made for easy understanding of the material and better memory of what was read. Although the book follows a text book formula it was fun to read which is rare. A real find!

4 out of 5 stars Decent, concise overview of world history.......1999-10-17

I looked for a long time to find a decent world history; one that was neither 10,000 pages nor painfully dry. This is the best I found. It is a very readable book of reasonable length. The authors make good use of sidebars with thought-provoking bits of literature which are scattered throughout the overall history. They also make a good attempt at discussing underlying causes and patterns behind the historical events. I perfer that to a dry recounting of the facts, even if I may not always agree with them on the interpretation. It was surprisingly neutral on religious topics, given the origin of the book.

If you have a need to add, subtract, etc. many numbers quickly without the aid of electronic devices: this book will help you. It also might be of interest to mathematics teachers. Otherwise, don't bother: your $4 calculator from the grocery store will do just fine.

I personally find the review very apalling, the good fact of this book is there are lots of drills.I recommend BILL HANDLEY'S full course in speed mathematics for a very simplified straightfowrad approach.THIS book doesn't really teach you a art of calculation, but continuos drills of different calculations.Horrible book don't buy it only if you like to practice continuous drills.garbage!!!!

2 out of 5 stars Rote, rote, rote.......2004-09-24

Being fairly proficient in "mental math", I picked up this book to see if there were any useful techniques for calculating. I was very disappointed.

The author's approach seems to rely primarily on rote memorization and optimizing pencil & paper methods. This is fine if you have pencil & paper handy, but cumbersome if you want to "run a rapid mental check..." as they suggest in their book. Rather than provide new techniques that work for mental computation, the reader is asked to perform endless drills to allow you to mentally perform pen & paper methods.

Another problem is the reliance on memorizing special cases instead of focusing on general-use techniques. If it takes a person 10 seconds to determine which of the dozens of special cases applies to a particular problem, then he does not know "how to calculate quickly"

For example, one of the author's special cases, "Multiplying a Sum by a Difference," actually has a very broad use for multiplying any two integers, but it is presented only briefly as a very narrow application that you will likely never stumble across in real life (e.g. multiplying two integers whose units add to 10 and the tens have a difference of 1)

Overall, the heavy reliance on rote vs. technique makes this an unsatisfying work.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK TO IMPROVE MENTAL CALCULATION.......2000-08-15

I gave it a five star simply because the books is simple and very effective at getting you to learn the "art" of quick calculation.

I looked at all the others in that field. Most of them teach you tricks for quick calculation. To do certain calculation you need to remember the tricks. There are dozen of them and you just get confused. This book do not used trick but teach you "number sense" ... and how to calculate from left to right with complex number. Beleive me, I was affraid of that kind of calculation and with that book I learned a lot!

I used it because I am preparing for interviews in management consulting. Case study need you to do lots of quick mental calculation. I am very good with complex calculation but mental arithmetics is something else.

BUY THIS BOOK ... very slim, but as said before, lots lots of exercise well made and improving in difficulty ... cant say more, its the book I was looking for.

Amusing, it was first published in 1945 ...

4 out of 5 stars I have kept my copy for years.......2000-04-08

and keep going back to it. It is important that a prospective buyer knows this book focuses on MENTAL arithmetic, i.e., no paper. If that is an interest of yours, then this is your book. If you are interested in "shortcuts", there are other books out there (though the last chapter of this book contains some of the more popular ones.) Don't think you can multiply two two-digit numbers in your head? you may be surprised.

                              Book Description

The road to an objective analysis of an energy system is called "Integrated Energy Analysis" and covers a cradle-to-grave system approach. This book contains such an analysis of the electricity energy system in Shandong-Province, one of China's 32 Provinces. It also presents a decision support analysis tool. It should allow decision makers in China to choose the right system of electricity supply with minimum environmental impact and/or minimum "true" cost.

The book contains a DVD, which contains a more extensive record of the research results obtained. It also contains all the tools, which have been developed. The methodology presented in this book and DVD is easily applicable to other Provinces in China and also other countries and regions. This research presents a pioneering effort in bringing together the three essential partners for any such research program, Industry, Academia and the Stakeholders, i.e. prospective users of the results. An important aspect of this international program with 75 participants was the leadership provided by a dedicated and professional Program Management Team from Industry.

Developing a sustainable energy supply in China is an essential part of a global strategy to promote development while mitigating environmental pollution and the effect of greenhouse gas emissions.
