The First Year: Multiple Sclerosis: An Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed (The First Year)
ASIN: 1585420522 |
Book Description
In the summer of 1999, David Lander revealed publicly that he suffers from multiple sclerosis-a secret he'd kept for fifteen years even while living and working in Hollywood's celebrity fishbowl. Diagnosed with the illness after filming the last episode of Laverne and Shirley, Lander continued to develop his film and television career while hiding his illness. His success was an astonishing testament to his physical and emotional strength and his determination to prove that those with M.S. can still enjoy fulfilling and challenging lives.
Fall Down, Laughing is the humorous and poignant story of Lander's courageous struggle with multiple sclerosis. Over the years, Lander tried everything to improve his condition: exercise programs, alternative medicine, support groups, the latest crop of designer drugs. Weaving his experiences against a backdrop of entertaining celebrity anecdotes, Lander offers a message of affirmation that will provide information and hope to millions of M.S. sufferers, their friends and caregivers.

meaningful .......2007-02-20
I felt better knowing that my fears with my illness are not mine alone.
Great Book.......2006-04-02
The book is a quick read. Sometimes you feel very alone with MS. This book will help you feel better. And, it explains some of the MS symptoms that you are experiencing better than a medical text. It will put some words on your feelings.
mixed review.......2006-02-12
I recently read this book, and I can't honestly say that I liked it. I too have been diagnosed with MS. I'm happy that Mr. Lander can find humor in his condition, however I find nothing he had to say not in the least bit funny.
MS is a terrible diease that affects the Central Nervous System and there's nothing funny about that. Even the title of the book is seriously upsetting(How Squiggy caught Multiple Sclerosis and Didn't Tell Nobody). You can't catch MS, and to put that in print is misleading.
I take my MS, the treatment for it, and all the symptoms very seriously. I have no desire to joke about them.
Some of the information in his book were very informative and very much worth reading, however I believe his approach is less than ideal.
Buy and read this book!.......2005-09-21
When my father finally told me he had MS (like David Lander, he kept it a secret), he suggested I read this book. The insight it gave me was priceless. Everyone will find their own path, but I can tell you that by sharing his experiences, Mr. Lander has helped me to be the best son (and friend) that I can be.
David Lander has a great story! .......2005-09-07
I just loved this book. It is a very quick read and very upbeat. For someone with MS or caring for someone with MS it is a story you can relate to. My husband was recently diagnosed with MS and has been very reluctant to read anything about the disease. I am going to have him read this book because while I whink it might confirm some of his fears, at the same time it does so in a positive manner.

A Must Have ... for people familiar with MS.......2007-03-09
I have Multiple-Sclerosis and purchased this last summer, thinking I would listen to it over a week or two of drive time. During a driving trip up north, my husband and I listened to the entire thing. There isn't any valuable medical information on here, but the emotions he puts you thru as you listen, is worth every penny. It was good to laugh along with him. A great story teller!

Book Description
This successful world history version of the popular Discovering series contains a multi-part pedagogical framework that guides students through the process of historical inquiry and explanation. The text emphasizes historical study as interpretation rather than memorization of data, with actual documents and artifacts from which students develop answers to historical questions.
Each chapter features the same thorough, six-part pedagogical framework. "The Problem" outlines the central question to be considered. "Background" places the problem in historical context, while "Method" discusses how to analyze primary source material relating to the problem. "Evidence" presents several primary source documents for students to analyze. "Questions to Consider" focus on specific evidence and links between primary sources, and "Epilogue" explains the problem's historical outcome.

A Primary Source History Book.......2000-09-09
Most history books are dull. Not this one!
I came across this book at a garage sale. I thought it might be useful to get ideas for History Day topics for my kids. I found it so interesting and well written that I read it cover to cover.
The reader learns history the way historians do-using primary sources. The book shows how to analyze letters, speeches, newspaper articles, maps, advertisements, statistical data, court records, and first person accounts. This is not a comprehensive history book, but rather a historical sampling of 15 topics. Some of the topics are "Conceptualizing the Modern World (1500s)", "The Confucian Family (1600-1800)", Islamic Fundamentalism and Renewal in West Africa (ca.1775-1820)", and "Globalism and Tribalism: Challenges to the Contemporary Nation-State (1980's-1990s)".
The Authors give a brief background, questions to consider, and suggestions to help the reader analyze the primary sources. I would strongly recommend this book to advanced placement high school or college level history teachers. It teaches critical thinking in a way rarely found in history texts.

Cytopathology Review Guide, 2nd Edition
ASIN: 0891893229 |
Book Description
Cytopathology is above all a visual science. Never has that been more beautifully demonstrated than in the visually stunning The Art & Science of Cytopathology. Richard M. DeMay, MD has created the most unique cytopathology reference ever conceived, combining detailed discussions with more than 1,600 extraordinary color images, to help readers understand cellular relationships and master cytomorphology.
The Art & Science of Cytopathology functions as both textbook and atlas. The quality of presentation, and Dr DeMay's easy, natural language have made it the most popular cytopathology reference ever published. Its innovative formatting features summary lists and diagnostic tables to accent discussions and help the reader easily find and remember key points. Specific diagnostic criteria are illustrated by full-color cropped images embedded throughout the text. The synoptic atlases at the end of each chapter provide large, high-magnification, full-color images for a more complete view of the complexities and subtleties of interpretation. The text teaches fundamental principles and applies them to specific diagnostic processes.
No other book has ever transformed the possibilities of cytopathology reference works as The Art & Science of Cytopathology. Whether as textbook, atlas, or example of the bookmakers' art, these two volumes will become the most important, and admired additions to any cytopathology library.
Customer Reviews:
art & science of cytopathology review.......2007-01-05
Although ten years old, I find this book superior to a lot of others, more recent ones. Extremely detailed and surprisingly easy to read and understand, it is a state of the art manual for cytopathology, and a worthwhile investment for every cytologist.
A real guide and refrence.......2005-10-01
Dr. DeMay R M, has choosen the most specific title for this book 'The Art & Sciences. This book is informative, written in a clear format and you can acquire all Cytology knowledge through the pages.
The Art & Science of Cytopathology.......2005-09-29
It is a great book, except for the fact that I only received one volume out of the two volume set. So I paid almost $400 for something that should have cost half that unless I would have gotten BOTH of the books that were to come with it.
Very good.......2003-12-05
The book written by Richard M DeMay is really the most useful book in cytopathology topic. This book is of high quality both in their pictures and its text. I recommend the book for the relevant individuals in this topic (cytopathology)
The most artfully illustrated book on cytology of the 90's.......2002-12-22
Dr. Demay's book is a superbly well illustrated work on cytopathology and this alone would classify it as a worthwhile buy. But Dr. Demay goes beyond and presents to the reader an excellent text, skillfully intertwined with comprehensive and carefully prepared pictures, discussing cytopathology in an accessible and very insightful manner most of time. This book is a basic addition for a cytopathologists' library.

Book Description
This beautifully illustrated and well-researched cytopathology and nutrition reference book was created specifically to show the how desease processes begin at the cellular level when key micronutrients such as folic acid are deficient. There are 38 large, detailed color drawings that depict: 1) the genetics of the cell- transcription factors, protein synthesis, nucleotides; 2) the cytology of normal cells; 3) folic acid deficiency--due to diet, hormones, radiation/chemotherapy, and atrophic gastritis/intestinal metaplasia; 4) and the cytology of opportunistic viruses and fungi--HPV, HSV,CMV, moluscum contagiosum, RSV, adenovirus, candida, blastomycoses, pneumocystis, coccidioides, cryptococcus, and histoplasmosis. Each colorful labeled drawing is accompanied by a discussion and an outline listing its unique features. Part II is dedicated especially to the health professional interested in knowing the crucial roles vitamins and minerals play in guarding against genetic mutations that can result in diseases and conditions such as birth defects, cancer, and heart disease. The most compelling chapter is on folic acid with important discussions on its lack being associated with drug and alcohol use, and with the development of HPV as well as cervical and breast cancer. Extensive research has also been compiled on zinc deficiency, which Suzanne has studied intensely throughout the years. Other chapters include menopause and osteoporosis; estrogen risks; the antioxidant vitamins A, C, and E; and her diet, "The Color Diet." Part III contains (17) 8"x10" brilliantly colored cytology entities for intense study viewing. The Art of Cytology is an excellent reference for cytologists and nutritionists as well as any health practitioner or lay person interested in understanding how diseases effect cells, and what diseased cells look like under the microscope. It is also an interesting book to place in patient waiting rooms and offices. Learn the secrets of the cells in this rev

Reviews.......2007-06-12
"Suzanne, This book is uniquely presented by combining the vitamin information and the effects on the cellular physiology. I have never seen a book blended in this way, so to me it is a seminal book. Your content is rich with specific notation and current research on the nutrients. I have used this book as a reference. I think this book should be used as a text for health personnel interested in pursuing study in nutrition since the book illustrates the effects of nutritional deficiencies and sufficiency's at the cellular level. Some physicians may need to "see" this effect in order to believe in the power of nutritional healing and health maintenance. Thanks for contributing to the nutritional literature with accurate and well developed material. The artwork was beautifully done. Being a past med tech helps me appreciate the delicate work you provided with the cell anatomy. I will certainly recommend it and plan to add it to my professional booklist handout." - Christina Minger, EdD, LPC Metabolic Clinic Coordinator, Heart Center for Excellence, Kalamazoo, MI.
"Dear Suzanne: What an amazing manuscript, The Art of Cytology!...You are not alone in opining that cancer is in some part caused or promoted by vitamin and mineral deficiencies. As we continue to unravel the secrets of the cells, your findings will become part of our knowledge base, and not just speculation, I am sure. "Dorothy L. Rosenthal, MD, FIAC, Professor of Pathology, Oncology and Gynecology & Obstetrics, Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, Baltimore, MD. Past President of the ASC (American Society of Cytopathology) and IAC (International Academy of Cytology), and former Director of Cytopathology at UCLA and Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions.
"Dear Suzanne: I am so overwhelmed to be the recipient of one of your rare and gorgeous books. Your artistic talents are to be deeply admired and celebrated. I really have no words to thank you for this gift, other than to tell you that it completes an incredible feeling for me which started recently when I was notified that I am to receive the Papanicolaou Award in November. Your gift brings artistic closure to my medical/scientific efforts, and I thank you deeply for it."--David B. Kaminsky, MD, FIAC, Director Cytopathology and Medical Director, Pathology Inc., Palm Springs, CA. Past President of the ASC and chairperson for the ASC's Art for Advocacy program.
"Ah, what a magnificent accomplishment this beautifully illustrated, well-researched publication is! As the education coordinator of two successful schools of cytotechnology, I saw Suzanne grow through her training year and beyond, into a career infused with the deepest caring about professional ethics, patient welfare, education and nutrition. Even in her fledgling student days, she researched the effects of zinc on cellular health. I have had the great pleasure to witness the development of this exquisite book from inception to completion, over several years. Initially, Suzanne's artistically accurate drawings of cells and infectious agents were an inspiration to my cytotechnology students. She generously provided copies of her color plates to all who were interested. To see the always-expanding micronutrients sections come together with the vibrant cellular details in this unique volume is rich reward for what has truly been a life's work. Congratulations, Suzanne!"--Susan Dingler, BFA, CT (ASCP), (IAC), editor and former teaching supervisor in cytotechnology at William Beaumont Hospital.
"Suzanne, Your work is simply awesome. If only I had a smidgen of your artistic talent I would consider myself lucky. Your illustrations were very helpful to me as a preparation for taking the SCT examination. I also enjoyed your poem "Who are Cytologists?" immensely. Thank you."--Joe M. Martinez, BS, SCT (ASCP), Cytopathology Supervisor, Audie Murphy VA Hospital, San Antonio, TX.
9/16/04--"Hi Suzanne, I just wanted to e-mail you and let you know how useful your information about HPV has been to me. I'm 28 years old and don't fit into most of the "HPV stereotypes." The diagnosis of HPV has been hard for me to deal with. I had a Colposcopy done and just received my second PAP a few weeks ago. I got a call from the doctor today saying that my PAP is still abnormal. I feel that I'm at high risk because I'm over weight, get fairly frequent vagina bacterial infections, on the pill, and don't deal with stress well. Your information about folic acid and vitamins has been extremely helpful and gives me some hope that if I change my life style and try to eat better and take vitamins I might be able to help myself. It's frustrating that doctors don't give you more information about what you can do to help. Well I didn't mean to give you my life story, just wanted to let you know that your site has helped. --Thanks again, Heidi."
3/9/05--"I am doing better...went off the pill, have been taking vitamins and my last few Colposcopy tests have been clear. --Thanks again, Heidi."
"Dear Suzanne, I can't tell you how many people I have turned on to your site, since I tripped across it sometime ago, and how many people you have helped by way of sharing your knowledge with us. You are a positively rare and precious jewel. I am looking forward to reading the new updates. Hadn't checked in for a while and was quite happy to see the new additions. Thank you for doing what you are doing. How much better a place the world would be if more people thought and acted like you."--Anna Mayer, BC, Canada.
"Dear Suzanne: I am researching the role of folic acid and other deficiencies in an attempt to manage my personal diagnosis of ASCUS with an HPV infection of the high risk types. Your article is by far the most comprehensive and useful that I have found, and I wanted to thank you for posting it. I am a corporate analyst with a strong science background, but by no means a professional in medical research. You have given me a direction and many issues to discuss with my gynecologist. I also have a strong desire to participate in research studies and clinical trials to help find a better treatment and maybe a cure. If you are conducting further research or know of anyone who is, please let me know. Thanks, again. What you've done so far has been an enormous help. --Sincerely, Judith."

Book Description
For the Wild Places profiles five of the unsung heroes of the new discipline of conservation biology - the front-line soldiers of the conservation movement who have dedicated their lives to saving endangered species and habitats. In addition to describing the day-to-day activities of the scientists, author Janet Bohlen explores the wider issues that are ultimately responsible for the success or failure of conservation efforts. In the course of her travels, she came to appreciate the complex interaction of local and global needs, and the reality of the political and social context in which all such efforts take place. In describing the scientists, their lives, and their work, she effectively conveys the fundamental importance and ever-present challenge of a life devoted to protecting the environment.
