5 out of 5 stars A Story of Courage and Love.......2007-05-27

I was really impressed with this book. Cindi is a remarkable woman to come through so much physical and mental pain and then to be able to forgive and move on with her life. It makes you grateful for what you have in life and shows you that amongst all the evil in the world there are still so many good people, helping each other. I really enjoyed reading this book and would urge others to do so.

5 out of 5 stars A Random Act.......2007-01-04

It took courage to live thru this horrible attack and more courage to write so honestly about her pain and then to be able to forgive the anonymous attacker.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent journey.......2006-08-08

This was a great book! I really enjoyed the positive attitude that Cindi demonstrated throughout this extremely difficult time in her life. I thought it was a fabulous read! I was finished with the book in three days!

3 out of 5 stars Forgiveness and Survival.......2006-03-07

This is an incredible story of an amazing woman who fought (and in many ways is still fighting) a horrific and totally senseless crime. Her very personal journey of survival is truly an inspiration to us all,and I thank her for having the courage to share it. She is helping to make the world a better and safer place. While it is often very difficult, forgiveness is NOT an option: it is a necessary part of this life. The bondages of anger, bitterness and depression that accompany unforgiveness far outweigh the original pain of whatever we may have encountered. When we release those who hurt us to God's justice, we free ourselves of any and all bondages and then our own healing can begin.
The only complaint I would have about this book is that it tended to drag a bit once I got past the half-way mark.Otherwise it is a powerful read.
God's blessings to Cindi and all her family!

5 out of 5 stars A true heroine.......2006-01-08

It's all about attitude and Cindi Broaddus sets a fine example for us all. The single mom has become a visible heroine and now a role-model for women around the world. Acid violence is a largely ignored hate crime that often goes unpunished throughout much of the world. Victims are shunned for their disfigurement. Cindi Broaddus shines light on a shameful situation with courage and grace.

      Book Description

An interdisciplinary collection of essays designed to map out a wide-ranging and productive future for postcolonial studies, this volume assesses the current state of the field and points toward its most promising new developments. In addressing questions about the definition and relevance of postcolonial scholarship, many of the essays consider its relation to the study of globalization. While some contributors offer broad reflections on the existing two-way influence between postcolonial theory and established university disciplines such as literary criticism and history, others forge ahead into some vital, if nascent, areas for postcolonial research such as media studies, environmental studies, religious studies, and linguistic and semantic analysis.

The contributors represent many of the fields altered by postcolonial studies over the past two decades, including literary studies, history, anthropology, Asian and African studies, and political science. They model diverse applications of postcolonial theory to Latin America, East Asia, the Middle East, and the United States. Postcolonial Studies and Beyond propels the field forward. It showcases scholars coming from intellectual precincts usually considered outside the purview of the postcolonial finding new ways to deploy classic techniques of postcolonial analysis, and scholars strongly associated with postcolonial studies offering substantial critiques designed to challenge the field’s most fundamental assumptions.

      Book Description

In C. L. R. James's classic Beyond a Boundary, the sport is cricket and the scene is the colonial West Indies. Always eloquent and provocative, James--the "black Plato," (as coined by the London Times)--shows us how, in the rituals of performance and conflict on the field, we are watching not just prowess but politics and psychology at play. Part memoir of a boyhood in a black colony (by one of the founding fathers of African nationalism), part passionate celebration of an unusual and unexpected game, Beyond a Boundary raises, in a warm and witty voice, serious questions about race, class, politics, and the facts of colonial oppression. Originally published in England in 1963 and in the United States twenty years later (Pantheon, 1983), this second American edition brings back into print this prophetic statement on race and sport in society.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Well written but not my cup of tea.......2006-06-10

I'm too far removed from the author to appreciate this book. This memoir is written with the assumption that the reader is familiar with his articles on cricket, is as avid fan of the game of cricket and an avid reader. Well, I have the third qualification for this book except that I haven't read his favorite book: Vanity Fair. To someone who follows cricket will come away with much more from reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars Lives up to its reputation.......2005-12-01

Beyond a Boundary reached number 3 in the UK Observer Sport Monthly's poll of the best fifty sports books of all time. It is burdened with enormous praise; amongst the quotes included on the cover are: `To say "the best cricket book ever written" is pifflingly inadequate praise' and `Great claims have been made for [Beyond a Boundary] since its first appearance in 1963: that it is the greatest sports book ever written; that it brings the outsider a privileged insight into West Indian culture; that it is a severe examination of the colonial condition. All are true.'

The praise is justified. The only way that this is not the best cricket book ever written is if you do not consider it as a cricket book. It is beautifully crafted, transcending the genre: an engaging combination of cricket book, personal memoir and political and cultural commentary. There are other very good books about cricket but this is something more than that. It is a cricket book, a history book, a sociology book and more.

CLR James is a fascinating man: widely travelled, spending long periods in England and the USA as well as Trinidad, an important writer and journalist, a politically active Marxist, instrumental in getting Frank Worrell appointed captain of the West Indies team. The book covers a wide range of subjects including his childhood in Trinidad; great cricketers he has known and watched; Caribbean politics amongst others. For cricket lovers one of the beautiful things about the book is that James loves cricket, he appreciates it as an art form. He possesses the clarity of thought and the prose to convey this love and appreciation to the reader.

In places the book shows its age (it was written in 1963); it is very much of its time: a product of the anti-colonial struggle, and the emergence of West Indies cricket as a serious challenge to the domination of England and Australia. In some places events have overtaken some of his observations and some of the language jars. It is still a fantastic book - amazingly insightful and interesting.

This is a book that no genuine cricket lover should be without.

4 out of 5 stars Fortunately about more than Cricket.......2003-09-11

The best blurb endorsing Beyond a Boundary is "To say `the best cricket book ever written' is piffingly inadequate praise." It succinctly conveys this is a great book, is about cricket, is about other things as well, and is written in language you don't use that often. Beyond a Boundary was published in 1963, but was written over most of the previous 35 years or so. The author, CLR James, was a West Indian Cricket fan, journalist, and patriot. The book is organised according to his reminisces of other Cricket players, most significantly better players than James (although it sounds like James was a quality player, just not an international class player). Now, any American thinking about reading this book already knows there is no such thing as a "famous cricket player". These people may be national heroes in other places, but one of the most famous cricket players, WG Grace, was to me just a name that reminds me of a floor wax company. So be forewarned that James is prone to using phrases like "the story of which is known to all" when for me little was known.

It is either fortunate that there is so much else beside cricket in this book or unfortunate that there is so much cricket in this book. There are many chapters where James goes on about the role of cricket in a boy's life, role of cricket in society, and the role of cricketers in society. These are the best parts of the book, especially if one is able to substitute the word "sport" for "cricket". These chapters do not dwell on the detailed points of the game, but simply need the reader to acknowledge that cricket is a game that people care about. Any sports fan should be able to make that leap. He does a great job describing how sport got organised in the West Indies, and the meaning of that organization.

Perhaps the single best section of the book is about how sport came to be prominent a prominent feature in society and how those that dismiss sport as a part of culture are basically being snobs. The rise of cricket and sport in Britain was the avant-garde of a cultural shift that came to the US just a shade later. We adapted our own sports, but aggressively so to be differentiated from the Brits who were doing the same. James is able to describe the changing role and position of sport in society with a keen social historical eye, as well as do a lengthy analysis on the aesthesis of sport (which unfortunately aggressively privileges cricket).

James lived through a period of tremendous political and social change in the West Indies. He played a central role in the movement for independence and in breaking down class and racial barriers. He labels himself a Marxist early in the book, and I am not one to argue with his assessment of his politics, but from the stories in this book he sounds more like a democrat (little d). Through great skill he manages to give the reader a sense of West Indian society and its changes while always making sure that Cricket is his main subject matter.

But, the flaw of the book, for an American, is that Cricket is the subject matter. I have a better than average knowledge of cricket for an American, but the references in the book were still far over my head. I was lost when he went on about the interactions between batter and bowler, not even understanding the terminology. I think a reader would be even more lost if they didn't even understand the basic rules of cricket, including the scoring system. This is a great book. It is a satisfying read, and one that demonstrates a tremendous command of language and structure on the part of the author. I would almost say it is worth learning the basics of cricket to make all this accessible. But the key word in that sentence is almost. But by all means, if you know cricket then read this book, but then you probably already have.

      5 out of 5 stars An Earth-Shattering Book.......2002-05-04

James's "Beyond a Boundary" is one of the finest literary works of the twentieth century. It asks questions that go to the heart of the human condition: where do democratic ideas come from? How does one strive towards self-emancipation in a totalitarian world? What tools may dismantle colonialism and neo-colonialism? What is the relationship between art and everyday life? Oh, and there's the social and cultural analysis of cricket, and how this endeavor fits into the larger picture. "Beyond a Boundary" is often referred to as the founding text of postcolonialism. It is more, far more. A caveat is in order, however. One cannot rush through this book. Take time to digest the ideas. A background in the history of the West Indies is also helpful

1 out of 5 stars James is too full of himself.........2002-02-12

Parts of this book, esp where he discusses the aesthetic value of cricket are tolerable. Otherwise, most of the book is about trying to tell the reader what an intellectual James is. I'm afraid this book is less about cricket and more about James. He's too full of himself and that diminishes the value of what could have been a great book.
Also, the writing leaves a lot to be desired.

        Book Description

Beyond Belief is a bold rethinking of the formation and consolidation of nation-state ideologies. Analyzing India during the first two decades following its foundation as a sovereign nation-state in 1947, Srirupa Roy explores how nationalists are turned into nationals, subjects into citizens, and the colonial state into a sovereign nation-state. Roy argues that the postcolonial nation-state is consolidated not, as many have asserted, by efforts to imagine a shared cultural community, but rather by the production of a recognizable and authoritative identity for the state. This project—of making the state the entity identified as the nation’s authoritative representative—emphasizes the natural cultural diversity of the nation and upholds the state as the sole unifier or manager of the “naturally” fragmented nation; the state is unified through diversity.

Roy considers several different ways that identification with the Indian nation-state was produced and consolidated during the 1950s and 1960s. She looks at how the Films Division of India, a state-owned documentary and newsreel production agency, allowed national audiences to “see the state”; how the “unity in diversity” formation of nationhood was reinforced in commemorations of India’s annual Republic Day; and how the government produced a policy discourse claiming that scientific development was the ultimate national need and the most pressing priority for the state to address. She also analyzes the fate of the steel towns—industrial townships built to house the workers of nationalized steel plants—which were upheld as the exemplary national spaces of the new India. By prioritizing the role of actual manifestations of and encounters with the state, Roy moves beyond theories of nationalism and state formation based on collective belief.

              Book Description

Opposing the orthodoxies of establishment postcolonialism, Beyond Postcolonial Theory posits acts of resistance and subversion by people of color as central to the unfolding dialogue with Western hegemony. The testimonies and signifying practices of Rigoberta Menchu, C.L.R. James, various "minority" writers in the United States, and intellectuals from Africa, Latin America, and Asia are counterposed against the dogmas of contingency, borderland nomadism, panethnicity, and the ideology of identity politics and transcultural postmodern pastiche. Reappropriating ideas from Gramsci, Bakhtin, Althusser, Freire, and others in the radical democratic tradition, San Juan deploys them to recover the memory of national liberation struggles (Fanon, Cabral, Che Guevara) on the face of the triumphal march of globalized capitalism.

                Book Description

Interventions into Modernist Cultures is a comparative analysis of the cultural politics of modernist writing in the United States and Taiwan. Amie Elizabeth Parry argues that the two sites of modernism are linked by their representation or suppression of histories of U.S. imperialist expansion, Cold War neocolonial military presence, and economic influence in Asia. Focusing on poetry, a genre often overlooked in postcolonial theory, she contends that the radically fragmented form of modernist poetic texts is particularly well suited to representing U.S. imperialism and neocolonial modernities.

Reading various works by U.S. expatriates Ezra Pound and Gertrude Stein, Parry compares the cultural politics of U.S. canonical modernism with alternative representations of temporality, hybridity, erasure, and sexuality in the work of the Taiwanese writers Yü Kwang-chung and Hsia Yü and the Asian American immigrant author Theresa Hak Kyung Cha. Juxtaposing poems by Pound and Yü Kwang-chung, Parry shows how Yü’s fragmented, ambivalent modernist form reveals the effects of neocolonialism while Pound denies and obscures U.S. imperialism in Asia, asserting a form of nondevelopmental universalism through both form and theme. Stein appropriates discourses of American modernity and identity to represent nonnormative desire and sexuality, and Parry contrasts this tendency with representations of sexuality in the contemporary experimental poetry of Hsia Yü. Finally, Parry highlights the different uses of modernist forms by Pound in his Cantos—which incorporate a multiplicity of decontextualized and ahistorical voices—and by Cha in her 1982 novel Dictee, a historicized, multilingual work. Parry’s sophisticated readings provide a useful critical framework for apprehending how “minor modernisms” illuminate the histories erased by certain canonical modernist texts.

                    Book Description

The history of civilization is, in many ways, the history of wine. This book is the first comprehensive and up-to-date account of the earliest stages of vinicultural history and prehistory, which extends back into the Neolithic period and beyond. Elegantly written and richly illustrated, Ancient Wine opens up whole new chapters in the fascinating story of wine and the vine by drawing upon recent archaeological discoveries, molecular and DNA sleuthing, and the texts and art of long-forgotten peoples.

Patrick McGovern takes us on a personal odyssey back to the beginnings of this consequential beverage when early hominids probably enjoyed a wild grape wine. We follow the course of human ingenuity in domesticating the Eurasian vine and learning how to make and preserve wine some 7,000 years ago. Early winemakers must have marveled at the seemingly miraculous process of fermentation. From success to success, viniculture stretched out its tentacles and entwined itself with one culture after another (whether Egyptian, Iranian, Israelite, or Greek) and laid the foundation for civilization itself. As medicine, social lubricant, mind-altering substance, and highly valued commodity, wine became the focus of religious cults, pharmacopoeias, cuisines, economies, and society. As an evocative symbol of blood, it was used in temple ceremonies and occupies the heart of the Eucharist. Kings celebrated their victories with wine and made certain that they had plenty for the afterlife. (Among the colorful examples in the book is McGovern's famous chemical reconstruction of the funerary feast--and mixed beverage--of "King Midas.") Some peoples truly became "wine cultures."

When we sip a glass of wine today, we recapitulate this dynamic history in which a single grape species was harnessed to yield an almost infinite range of tastes and bouquets. Ancient Wine is a book that wine lovers and archaeological sleuths alike will raise their glasses to.

                    5 out of 5 stars Utterly fascinating.......2007-08-01

I cannot remember holding a book in my hands that caused me more excitement and enchantment any time recently. And the best thing of all is that it is not a fairy tale, not even a "romanticized" account of the ancient history of wine; on the contrary, with all the diligence and impartiality of a good CSI detective, this book sticks to evidence and confirmed facts. Still, it manages to weave a compelling story of how wine was intricately connected with the very origins of civilization (or, should I say, civilizations). The book is not only difficult to put down, but as a viticulture and wine educator I find it impossible to ignore when preparing teaching materials. Granted, there is still a lot of uncertainty about certain wine archaeological issues and much more work to be done, but I find that part probably the most exciting. I recommend this book to the viticulture and wine professional and enthusiast alike, as well as anybody interested in archaeology and origins of civilizations.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensible and Unique.......2006-12-21

There is no book on the history of wine that is so widely
quoted. In fact,it may not be possible to write a credible
history of wine without referring to this brilliantly
                    assembled volume.

What makes this book outstanding is its author's background.
He is a chemist and archaeologist. As such, he holds dual
citizenship in two of the least sentimental professions in
the world. While other authors may be taken in by their own
poetry, McGovern relentlessly sticks to the facts as manifest
in the physical evidence. This Joe Friday approach makes him
                    not only believable but readable.

A case in point is the Godin Tepe jar, an artifact some 5500
years old from Iran. McGovern gets his description rolling with
the following: "My laboratory had already developed techniques
for identifying very ancient biomolecules." You know you're in
the company of a heavy hitter with an opening like that. McGovern
goes on to describe his skepticism that the jar could have
contained wine and then his assurance, based on molecular-
                    level study, that it had.

Compare this with the High School Book Report nature of a lot
of wine history writing. No, don't bother. There is no comparison.

I have enjoyed many books on the history of wine and grapes, my favorite being Johnson's The Story of Wine. McGovern's new book may replace Johnson's at the top of my list. McGovern's attention to detail is wonderful but his story telling is really top notch. He manages to weave a great story while at the same time providing us with an academician's attention to detail -- all without boring us! His examination of early cultures and their use of the grape is fascinating. A very enjoyable and educational book.

                      Book Description

Since the first edition was printed in 1991, there have only been minor changes in air regulations. The opposing "trenches" used by environmental regulation proponents have deepened as each side increases their database. Agencies and environmental groups have backed off a little in issues such as bubble policies and enforcement time tables. This has made it extremely difficult for equipment vendors to anticipate industry requirements. Overall, the current market projections are not very favorable for the new equipment suppliers. In contrast, the service organizations are seeing increasing need for their help in areas such as dispersion modeling, troubleshooting and testing. Existing systems are being improved upon to keep them in operation. There remains a continuous need for up-to-date references and training materials to serve these needs, and it is for this purpose this revised edition is dedicated.
