A decade after America pulled out of Vietnam, the seeds of the often heart- wrenching oral history, A Piece of My Heart, were sown when writer and filmmaker Keith Walker met a woman who had been an emergency room nurse in Cu Chi and Da Nang. She and 25 others recount the time they spent "in country" as part of 15,000 American women who volunteered or served as nurses and in the military. After working on too many mutilated young men, one nurse tells of wanting to ask her mother to "check around and see if she could find one whole eighteen-year- old." Like male veterans, many returned with post-traumatic stress disorder. They found it hard to shake the numbness that made a war zone bearable or to settle into a life minus manic highs and lows. "The one thing Nam did for me was that I felt like I could walk on water," says a nurse, a conviction that made later jobs seem worthless or impossibly bland.

I read this every once in a while to gain perspective and to make sure I hear the stories of these women. To make sure I'm aware of, and to acknowledge their sacrifices. They touched so many lives then, and are still making a difference in other ways now. I think this should be required reading for every woman.

5 out of 5 stars A compelling collection of Vietnam memories.......2005-08-21

"A Piece of My Heart: The Stories of 26 American Women Who Served in Vietnam," by Keith Walker, is a powerful addition to the large body of writings about the Vietnam War. Walker's technique for compiling this book was to interview the featured women and turn the transcripts of the interviews into chapters. One chapter is drawn from a dual interview of two of the women, and another chapter consists of a letter written by a woman whom Walker did not get to interview. The book is full of black-and-white photographs that further document the women's service in Vietnam. Also noteworthy is the stirring foreword by entertainer Martha Raye, who briefly discusses her own experiences in Vietnam.

Most of the women featured were Army nurses, but the book also includes women who served as WACs, Red Cross personnel, a civilian flight attendant, a USO worker, and more. There are some significant recurring themes that connect a number of chapters: the experience of being under hostile fire; men, women, sex, and dating in the war zone; encounters with the Vietnamese people; fun and recreation in Vietnam; challenges the women faced in doing their jobs in a war zone; and personal and psychological problems some of the women faced after returning home from Vietnam. Also, two of the women discuss possible Agent Orange-connected health problems faced by children they had after serving.

There are some extremely graphic and disturbing accounts by some of the nurses as they recall the horrific injuries suffered by their patients, as well as their own struggles to deliver compassionate care in the combat zone environment. There are many other noteworthy memories, some heartbreaking, some funny. Army nurse Pat Johnson describes painting the barracks "red-and-white striped with pink polka dots." Entertainer Bobbi Jo Pettit recalls touring Vietnam as part of an all-girl band called "The Pretty Kittens." Navy nurse Maureen Walsh delivers a vivid account of an enemy rocket attack at Da Nang.

The voices of these women strike many tones: feisty, introspective, proud, caring. I was especially moved by the memories of post-war reunions and experiences at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. I consider this book to be an absolutely essential complement to the many fine works, both fiction and nonfiction, written by male Vietnam veterans. Recommended as a companion text: Wallace Terry's "Bloods: An Oral History of the Vietnam War by Black Veterans," which is similar in both format and impact to this book.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning Oral history= a must read.......2005-06-04

Written in 1985 when many of the wounds of Vietnam still bled fresh, Keith Walker interviewed 26 women who served in country in a variety of capacities. The result of this ambitious and courageous project is a heartbreaking, captivating and ultimately transcendent oral history.

The stories here filled with an evolution that mirrors the changes of perception that accompanied the war. This is not only a history of women in Vietnam (a history all too frequently too overlooked)but also a history of America as well. Each woman, in her own way experiences the journey from ambition to horror to disillusionment to healing. Many of the women interviewed (as of 1985)are still works very much in progress- as our Nation is as well.

This oral history depicts not only depicts the immediate horrors and consequences of combat but most importantly the post combat experience as well along with the living conditions and political environment as seen in the first person.

Later adapted (by Shirley Lauro) into a powerful dramatic event, A PIECE OF MY HEART makes for a must read for anyone interested in either Vietnam history specifically or American history in general.

A classic.

5 out of 5 stars There's a special place in Heaven..........2003-03-16

... for all of the women who served in Vietnam. Read this book, plus the late Lynda Van Devanter's Home Before Morning and you'll see why.

While Lynda's book is a hauntingly graphic record of the triumphs and tragedies that the ANC nurses and Army surgeons experienced in Nam, A Piece Of My Heart gives the reader a very broad perspective of the contributions of women in many other areas.

The foreword to the book was written by the wonderful Martha Raye, whose unflinching commitment to the men and women who served in Nam led to her being a two-time Purple Heart recipient. That even an entertainer could be wounded twice in the line of duty speaks volumes about the risk level In Country.

Equally, Civilian Flight Attendant Micki Voisard almost met her end when her airliner almost collided with a B-52 that was maintaining radio silence during an airstrike.

Yet even though the Red Cross Donut Dollies, such as Penni Evans and "Sam" Bokina Christie and WACs such as Doris Allen all have compelling stories to relate, it is the experiences of the nurses that really stay with you, long after you have put the book down.

For most of her post-Nam life, former ANC nurse and author Lynda Van Devanter (Home Before Morning - available through Amazon.com) was haunted by the memory of a young soldier who had no face, and who eventually had to be left to die because of the extent of his injuries.

When you read the piece by Anne Simon Auger (91st Evac. - Chu Lai) you realize that injuries of that magnitude were not as uncommon as you might hope and pray. Anne also described a young soldier whose face had been shot away, leaving him blind and in her words, "a vegetable".

While my own view is that people in such terrible physical condition should be given enough morphine to shut down their breathing, or in the absence of that, on the battlefield, a mercy round from an M-16, I fully accept that however you have to deal with such shocking injuries, it will stay with you for the rest of your life.

Let us not forget that while the cowardly Stalinist flag burners were calling the returning troops "baby killers", thousands of true blue American women were risking their own lives to support the largely teenaged US soldiers in a war that increasingly made no sense to the people who were being asked to fight it.

These women were Vets. These women were heroes. These women were angels.

We must constantly seek ways to honour them. Their sacrifice must never be forgotten.

5 out of 5 stars Good Times, Bad Times.......2002-04-27

These stories are so heart-wrenching I had to take a break while reading simply to keep from falling to pieces. These women are so amazing and strong - they're inspiring. I Loved this book and GREATLY recommend the play with the same title by Shirely Lauro that was based off of these stories. It's so unbelievable and so real it makes you feel for those 6 women more than you'd ever imagine!

The two part booklets on World History are just not on a par with the original "Anchor Atlas of World History I & II". The Penguin Atlas's lack any sort of detail whatsoever with their choice of equally dull 3 color maps, gas station road maps are more exciting.

Every map in both volumes displays the same dull color choice of pale blue to represent oceans, white for the continents, and black dots & printing to show cities & regions.

The Penguin Atlas series is about as exciting as a runny nose.

3 out of 5 stars Modern History in very broad brush strokes.......2004-09-12

My recent interest in Early Modern European History led me to search for an atlas that would help place, geographically, the countries, cities, and towns often mentioned in the histories. Modern atlases will do in a pinch, but it can be difficult to match modern spellings with those of several hundred years ago - if indeed they still exist. I was surprised when my search turned up few recent publications. In fact, The Penguin Atlas of Modern History was the only one I could find readily available that covered the specific period of interest.

The Atlas itself is a mixture of text and graphics. It is generally divided into interleaved sections that cover the World and then Europe for a given period. Almost without fail each page of text is followed by a supporting map. Most of the maps are large scale - either showing the entire world or an entire continent. It is relatively easy to locate major countries and large political units, like the Holy Roman Empire, significant trade or exploration routes, and the large population centers. But forget about finding nearly any city or town even slightly off the beaten path.

The Penguin Atlas of Modern History tried to do too many things instead of just focusing on the maps. Consequently, it failed to be more than a very broad introduction to the period textually and even less so graphically. The maps provided less information than my 1950's Rand McNally Atlas of World History. And most of the historical texts covering this period provide maps on par with those in this Atlas.

If you are looking for an introduction, supported with large simple maps, to the general movement of this period than I would recommend this book. But for more in-depth study The New Cambridge Modern History Atlas, if you can find a copy, is a better choice. With 288 pages of maps it has far more information than the Penguin Atlas of Modern History. There is no text, other than that on the maps themselves, but then, thats what the history books are for.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Ancillary Text for AP Modern European History.......2003-12-05

I am writing this review to call this book (and its companion, The New Penguin Atlas of Recent History by the same author) to the attention of all the teachers and students of Advanced Placement Modern European History. Its conciseness, the entertaining nature of its narrative, and the lucidity of its well-conceived maps make it a wonderful supplement for whatever textbook you use for teaching and learning this subject matter. It can be used effectively throughout the year to make the bewildering detail of the successive epochs of European development more understandable by its clear pinpointing of the strategic objectives the various European states were aiming at. Its discussions are also so compact that they make excellent reviews before tests -- and before the big exam at the end of the year, especially. I can't recommend another work available in this field more highly. Criticism of the military and political emphases of McEvedy's narrative seem beside the point as these were instrumental in acquiring wealth and were, whether we like it or not, the basis of policy decisions for all European rulers. The introduction to this volume is particularly valuable as it challenges the universally accepted notion that Scientific and Industrial Revolutions occurred within an encapsulated time periods as a result of immediate causative factors. Here, McEvedy clearly states that the advantages European states enjoyed were not military, but cultural and administrative. These advantages were accumulated gradually. McEvedy's military/political emphasis is merely the result of his recognition that the acquisition of financial power is the objective of the modern state and that history is the resulting record of the means that shaped these ends. Lastly, one reason I find this work so useful because it is written by a British author with all the advantages that perspective entails for a view of Eurocentric history. Use this work for your APMEH courses!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent resource--and most enjoyable reading.......2000-04-15

This was the first of Colin McEvidy's historical atlases in my collection. His skill at showing the panoramic sweep of history has kept me coming back for more.

This volume does an excellent job in covering the period from the late fifteenth century to the fall of Napoleon. The maps are excellent--clear and well-thought out. But what sets this series apart from other historical atlases is Colin McEvidy's sharp wit. The fact that French King Francis I had "more dash than brains" breathes greater life into that monarch's appearance on the world stage than might be expected in the few lines alotted to him.

Overall a wonderful atlas and a good read.

Perhaps a better title for this book would have been: The Penguin Atlas of Recent Mostly Military History: Europe 1815 to 1980. Much attention is given to military campaigns and political boundaries, but little is said of the populations within the borders, except when they are reduced to population figures. Since the book was published in 1982 and not updated since, you won't find any discussion of the important changes in the past two decades.

The writing style is usually engaging, although the author has the irritating tendency to view nations' developments as a contest to attain the greatest levels of population and industrial production.

    Book Description

This mesmerizing, surreal account of the bizarre adventures of Terence McKenna, his brother Dennis, and a small band of their friends, is a wild ride of exotic experience and scientific inquiry. Exploring the Amazon Basin in search of mythical shamanic hallucinogens, they encounter a host of unusual characters -- including a mushroom, a flying saucer, pirate Mantids from outer space, an appearance by James and Nora Joyce in the guise of poultry, and translinguistic matter -- and discover the missing link in the development of human consciousness and language.

5 out of 5 stars Even Better as an Audio Book!.......2007-08-29

Hands down--Terence McKenna is the best storyteller that I've ever encountered, and True Hallucinations is one of my very favorite books of all-time. Terence's masterfully-crafted language simply holds me spellbound. A lot of people aren't aware that the book True Hallucinations is actually based upon a nine CD audio set of Terence telling the tale of his extraordinary adventures in the Amazon. As incredible as this book is, it simply pales by comparison next to the original "talking book." Terence was a master of language, and hearing him tell this story in his own voice is an incomparable experience. The True Hallucinations Talking Book was published by Sound Photosynthesis in Mill Valley, California.

5 out of 5 stars Expedition to the Amazon--an encounter with the magic mushroom in the presence of the "Other".......2007-08-04

Someone first getting acquainted with Terence McKenna probably has listened to some of his theories on novelty, time, and psychedelics and would like to dive deeper into his ideas by exploring his written works. In that case, the books "The Invisible Landscape", "Food of the Gods", and "The Archaic Revival" would be the most direct path.

However if you have a place in your heart for Terence then it would eventually be necessary to read "True Hallucinations". This is the true story of his journeys to the Amazon jungle in 1971, an expedition which started out in search of the shamanic brew ayahuasca. The travelers, Terence, his brother Dennis, and three friends, are quickly taken in a different direction--the mushrooms.

The mushrooms are a constant presence in the rest of the story. Not only are there fresh specimens scattered plentifully across the jungle floor, but the group appears to be in the presence of what Terence calls "an Other". He and Dennis go into a frenzied state of figuring out what the hell it could be and how they might try to understand more about it. Of course this means lots more mushrooms, and they also use harmine for a combinatory effect. This culminates in "the experiment at La Correra", after which Dennis appears to depart from reality for two solid weeks.

Terence gives the details on how he got his ideas on novelty and time, which came to him by hints from the "Other" after what appeared to be an encounter with a flying saucer. The body of ideas that he developed during this time resulted in novelty theory and the Timewave construction out of the King Wen sequence of I Ching hexagrams. Terence eventually came back from the Amazon and wrote "The Invisible Landscape" with Dennis in 1975.

Another important story that is told in this book is how Terence and Dennis developed a successful technique of home-cultivation of psilocybin mushrooms. This resulted in the first step-by-step guide in 1976, "Psilocybin: Magic Mushroom Grower's Guide", which started the underground industry. This work has been carried on with a tribute to the McKenna's contributions to the study of mushroom cultivation in the book "Psilocybin: Mushroom Handbook" by Nichols and Ogame.

I really enjoyed this book because it is a good example of how someone's view of the world and reality and ultimately their path in life can change dramatically if consciousness suddenly raises to very high levels. I know personally what this can be like, so for me this was an amazing story. This last aspect puts "True Hallucinations" into a rare class of books which tell a story of personal transcendence, this one being historically and philosophically similar to Robert Anton Wilson's "Cosmic Trigger" and Philip K. Dick's "Valis/Exegesis".

5 out of 5 stars Great read for any fan of psyconauts.......2007-04-05

I found this to be a very good read and I enjoyed it thoroughly. It gives some great seeds to new thoughts.

2 out of 5 stars I like the McKenna brothers.......2006-08-28

The work they've done, the lectures, the books, Dr. Dennis's research, etc - it's all good. This text IMHO should have been edited much more thoroughly before being published.

3 out of 5 stars An historical review of his trip.......2005-10-15

Well basically there is not much you will learn with this book. This is a great tale, that the author didn't want to be forgotten, so he wrote this book.

Take a look at http://deoxy.org/t_weeke1.htm to know his ideas more deeply.

      Book Description

This completely updated and revised Second Edition of the popular Workbook of Atmospheric Dispersion Estimates provides an important foundation for understanding dispersion modeling as it is being practiced today. The book and accompanying diskette will help you determine the impacts of various sources of air pollution, including the effects of wind and turbulence, plume rise, and Gaussian dispersion and its limitations. Information is shown in summary graphs as well as in equations. The programs included on the diskette allow you to "get the feel" for the results you'll obtain through the input of various combinations of parameter values. The sensitivity of data to various parameters can be easily explored by changing one value and seeing the effect on the results. The book presents 37 example problems with solutions to show the estimation of atmospheric pollutant concentrations for many situations.

        Book Description

What is air? Why is the sky blue? Why do people react favorably to mountain or sea air? How does desert air differ from the air of California's Central Valley? How is air pollution affecting plants and animals? This book is a unique guide to the air we breathe in California. More than a natural history guide, it approaches this fascinating topic by recognizing the overwhelming role played by humans in the story of California's air. In a highly engaging style, David Carle explains daily weather patterns, seasonal climate, characteristic winds, and sky phenomena. He explores air as the gases in our atmosphere, but also considers the aspects of air that influence all of our senses--its taste, smell, feel, and look. The guide discusses California's history of air quality management, air pollution and its effect on humans and the environment, and the technological and individual measures needed to address these challenges. The book also functions as a handbook for more environmentally conscious living by providing information on alternative energy sources for consumers and tips for cleaner running cars.

Features 80 color photographs, 23 figures, 18 maps
Covers regional differences of topography, weather, and the character of the air in California's fifteen designated air basins
Includes a field guide to the sky, explaining color and light, clouds and wind, and the nature of flight
Addresses issues surrounding global climate change in California

                  Description:
Technology forcing is a strategy where a regulator specifies a standard that cannot be met with existing technology, or at least not at an acceptable cost. Using the 1970 U.S. Clean Air Act for controlling automobile emissions as a baseline example, we demonstrate the importance of the regulatory implementation process if regulations are to foster technological change. The 1970 legislation required steep emissions reductions for new 1975 and 1976 automobiles, which presented automakers with major technical and economic challenges. Nevertheless, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency successfully forced the adoption of two marquee control technologies-the catalytic converter in 1975 and the three-way catalyst in 1981. We focus on three factors critical to the implementation process: agency credibility to enforce standards, competitive pressures to drive industry research and development, and uncertainty about technological development.
