Only for the daily handicapper. .......2007-06-08
As a part-time horse player this book is just not a good fit. To benefit from everything this book offers you would have to be a full-time handicapper. There are some great hints and tips that can be pulled out for any horse player, but to truly implement everything involved in this book you would have to be at the track every day. Maybe when I retire and I can be at the track every day I can pull out this book and use it to pick winners all day long, but until that point just 2 stars.
A great book for the part-time player is Brad Free's book Handicapping 101.
Rehash of same old thing.......2007-05-10
This book was a reissue of an old book with nothing new worth buying it again.
Gaining An Advantage At The Wagering Window.......2007-04-27
Andrew Beyer revolutionized Thoroughbred handicapping in the 1970s with the introduction of the Beyer Speed Figure.
Found in most racing forms, the speed figure gives the handicapper a guide to how the runner rates against others in the field that day no matter if they competed in races at different tracks and/or against a variety of levels of competition.
In The Winning Horseplayer, Beyer takes his analysis to trip handicapping, which takes into account the type of journey a Thoroughbred has in a race, with a focus on being compromised due to any trouble in the start and turns, what path was taken around the track and if there was any stress due to the pace.
What has been perhaps the most subjective handicapping tool is given a firm foundation by Beyer, which can be utilized by horseplayers who take the time to take trip notes from replays of previous races.
In an updated version of the book that was originally published in 1994, there are numerous case studies and witty anecdotes, along with a new preface penned by Beyer.
This is not a book for beginners to handicapping races. But for those with experience - and are looking for a possible betting edge or simply a great read on handicapping - this is the winning ticket.

Another winner.......2006-03-28
Beyer expanded on his legendary speed figures by implementing trip and pace factors into his handicapping. He gives you real world examples of how giving attention to those elements can improve your win %. As usual, Beyer's writing incorporates a certain flair that other writers on the subject just don't seem to have. That's what seperates him from the expert handicappers who write books. Andy Beyer is both and everyone who wants to better understand the sport needs to read all of his works.
Another top book, by Andy Beyer.......2003-08-04
Andy Beyer is speaking of very sophisticated and advanced technique's in track bias at the many different tracks a person may play or go to.
In this age of simulcast wagering at multiple facilities, this book is even more important.
You have to keep a detailed log book as far as we are conerned to know what the bias is at different tracks.
Andy correctly points out many important factors that the majority of the horse racing public would not consider, and thus if you considered them would give you an advantage.
Beyer is the King !

some good info, some biased material.......2002-06-17
This book is worth reading for the appendix and details on trip handicapping, but the material on track biases smacks of type 1 errors (finding differences that aren't really there).
A serious horse player must read.......2000-07-13
The main theme of this book is trip handicapping and a horseplayer who mainly focuses on figures must read. This book will change your mind and ways of thinking. I am actually quite surprise that this book was written over 10 years ago.
A must read........1999-05-29
With Andrew Beyers new approach to handicapping, I have grasped the full potential of my own creative handicapping skill. A full out knowledge investment. This book is gauranteed to lead an intelligent player to success.

Book Description
On December 8 (Japan time), 1941, Imperial Japan launched a massive attack on beautiful Pearl Harbor, calling it "the preemptive first strike." The island empire, seduced by a mirage of eternal glory, had lunged forward without knowing its destination. Imperial Japan, fiercely proud, fought to the last soldier against the strongest nation in the world. Throngs of women and children who had encouraged the soldiers to kill every enemy had also died for the promise of eternal grandeur. In the heart of the empire, the Japanese, who had survived the blanket bombings by the "flying fortress" B29s and the two atomic bombs, waited for the dishonor of surrender. Born in Japan five days after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, I grew up in the terrible aftermath of Japan's first defeat in war. And, like all other children who had survived, I knew hunger, poverty, and the burden of defeat. I remember leaving Osaka with my mother for the mountainous countryside, where she, a wealthy landowner, employed many tenant farmers. The train we took had all its windows painted black to hide from the B29s, which rained incendiary firebombs on anything visible or moving. Even with that precaution, our train crawled through the darkness of the night. Soon afterward, Osaka was reduced to smoldering ruins. President Harry S. Truman assigned the illustrious U.S. Army general, Douglas MacArthur to the unprecedented task of changing militant Japan to a peace-loving nation. We, conquered and starving, thought the tall, handsome, and charismatic MacArthur was "the missionary of democracy." The reissue of Unconditional Democracy (originally published in 1982) will, I hope, illustrate the difficult mission of a regime change: a successful metamorphosis that amalgamates incompatible cultures and religions, conflicting memories of hopes and disappointments, and then gives birth to something greater than the past.
Book Description
An eminent political scientist and government official here offers witty and trenchant counsel on what leaders need to know in order to be effective—how to deal with war and crises, diplomacy, secret intelligence, political advisors, the media, and more.
“A tour de force. . . . Lord’s understanding of the workings of government, both ancient and modern, is profound, and his ability to assimilate the two, makes The Modern Prince indispensable. . . . As a handbook for leaders it deserves to become an instant classic.”—Brian M. Carney, Wall Street Journal
“Our politics will be a lot healthier if our politicians can be persuaded to read Carnes Lord’s engaging and penetrating book. And even if the politicians don’t take Lord to heart, we should, so we can learn how to select better leaders.”—William Kristol, Editor, The Weekly Standard
“This wonderful book covers everything you need to know about politics today.”—Harvey Mansfield, Harvard University

Complements "The Prince" and Uses It Wisely (Among Other Issues)........2007-05-05
Author Carnes Lord has created a text that complements, but does not compete with, Machiavelli's most famous treatise "The Prince."
Lord offers advice to, ostensibly, men and women in positions of global leadership. However, this advice can and should be easily tailored to meet the needs of every politician, military officer, law enforcement executive, and business CEO.
On page 208, for example, Lord illustrates Machiavelli's answer to the question of whether caution or impetuosity is a more valuable quality in leaders. With that said, Lord, in acknowledging that a contemporary leader (in particular, the United States President) having access to the use of the modern invention of executive power, most likely will have to follow the Machiavellian model: "the deep message is that princes cannot afford to follow cautious or passive courses because the world is more easily shaped to human purposes than hitherto believed. Energetic leaders project an image of strength that overawes and impresses, that succeeds by its own success."
He contends that this is based more upon and is evidenced more so by the free enterprise style of leadership in the business world, however it has its roots deeply planted in "proper" politics.
With the belief that every leader can benefit from the gold nuggets of observation and advice offered between the pages I rate this text at five stars.

How Machiavelli's Prince applies to modern world and politics .......2007-03-18
Based on Machiavelli's writings on "Prince", the author develops several guiding principles to today's public administration, democracy operations, elitism, foreign affairs and diplomacy, intelligence and communications, strategic operations and crisis amangement, recommendations and executions, elements of leadership etc.
Bascially the author advocates institutionalization to systems, as opposed to individual charisma for leadership. But how a leader could run a government (or an organization for that matter) within this institutionalized framework, bureacratic controls is a focus of this book too.
Business leaders are becoming more politicized with the increased organization size and layers. This books offers classification on the types of leadership, decision models, advantages and disadvantages of each, and advices on how to deal with factionalism within an organization.
This book is an in-depth analysis, drawing examples from the world and history, on leadeship today and tomorrow. It is suitable for students in the public administration, high level decision makers, strategic think tanks. I like reading it.
The Modern Prince is not Machiavelli.......2006-01-03
As the prior reviewer (Adam Ewer) stated, "The Modern Prince" is not what I had expected either. I expected it to expound on Machiavelli's original theories and found little connection. I had hoped for some insight as to Machiavellian ideas as pertaining to general leadership principles and instead found a book focused on Political science. Therefore, for me, this book was terribly disappointing and of very little utility. Two thumbs down.
A Map of the Modern Political Landscape.......2005-01-28
"The Modern Prince" is not what I had expected, but it provides something equally valuable.
I would not call "The Modern Prince" a handbook in the sense of Machiavelli's original. The fact is, it spells out hardly any real answers for dealing with the complicated problems of contemporary governing. I had hoped to find something comparable to Machiavelli, a handbook that would impart sage advice for the modern statesman. But Carnes Lord is not Machiavelli's successor. If you want a handbook filled with little nuggets of wisdom, turn to Machiavelli's original or to Marcus Aurelius.
What Carnes Lord has created instead is a map of the political landscape in today's advanced democracies. In each chapter, he gives competent analysis of the various features of that landscape, including the media, the military, intelligence agencies, the economy, and the class of people he calls "the elites". Each of these has their place, and each can be manipulated to serve the policy goals of the leader. But he reminds us that they can also become obstacles if not supervised or managed adequately. They are tools that can work for you or against you. That is his main point, and it's an important one to understand. The trouble is that Lord does little to explain HOW to make them work for you. This is what I had hoped to find here. But perhaps the answers are too complex to fit into a layman's guide to government.
Yes, I've said that it isn't the handbook I expected. Yes, I've said that it raises more questions than answers. And I haven't even mentioned that it's littered with a whole bunch of the author's personal right-wing prejudices. But stil I give it four stars. Why? Because at the end of the day, I realized that it had given me something equally enriching: exposure to the realist school of politics. It's easy to fight for lofty ideals; but how do you bring those ideals down into the dirt, into this imperfect world, full of people with conflicting ideas and agendas? That's a much more important question.
In short, this book has given me new appreciation for what defines a competent statesman. I feel that from now on, my vote shall reflect an opinion that is not just more educated, but also better-educated.
Incisive and surprising treatment of leadership.......2004-12-14
This book is among the most incisive interpretations of leadership in modern times. To say more is to say less.

Book Description
The hardy, multipurpose Dominique chickens that came to the New World with the Pilgrims and later traveled in pioneer saddlebags to help settle the West were once too numerous to count; by 1990 a mere 500 hens survived. This is but a single example of the diminishing diversity of farm animals: half of once-common livestock breeds are endangered, others are already extinct. The need to preserve farm animal diversity is increasingly urgent, says the author of this definitive book on endangered breeds of livestock and poultry. Farmyard animals may hold critical keys for our survival, Jan Dohner warns, and with each extinction, genetic traits of potentially vital importance to our agricultural future or to medical progress are forever lost. This comprehensive book features: complete information on the history, characteristics, qualities, and traits of 138 endangered livestock breeds (goats, sheep, swine, cattle, horses, other equines) and 53 poultry breeds (chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese); where these breeds may be seen today; the degree of rarity of each breed in the United States, United Kingdom and Canada; information on feral livestock populations; 160 color photographs and over 80 black and white photos and historical illustrations
Customer Reviews:
Wondrous source book.......2005-09-15
An eyeopening look at the diversity of livestock we may lose if we're not careful. Looking for stock that has survived the test of time, but has been left behind in the handful of homogenized varieties beloved by big farming? This is the book for you! This book is a must have for recreation and historical groups throughout the states, and I firmly recommend it.
Full of interesting information!.......2003-05-11
Ms. Dohner has written a well-researched book on a topic that has begun to catch the attention of many -- historic (and now rare) breeds of livestock. In the past, people dug up roots and bulbs from the old family homestead and transplanted them to new locations. They could go to grandpa and get some of those "dominicker" chickens that his daddy started with.
For many, the homestead and the dominickers are gone now, just like the items the Smithsonian that were once part of every day life. But for some, like the author, "dominickers" and other historic livestock are still a part of life on the farm.
Perhaps that is why Jan Dohner has been able to write a very readable book, giving the reader the profiles and histories of over 200 breeds of poultry and other livestock (goats, sheep, swine, cattle, horses, other equines)and even accounts of their original domestication along with their current status. The illustrations only add to the text.
If you are interested in agriculture or farmsteading, if you have been thinking about becoming involved in small farm livestock, poultry raising, or rare breeds conservation, I recommend this book. Or if you are interested in these endeavors and cannot find the book in your local library, ask your librarian "Why not?" Maybe the local library needs a donation!
