5 out of 5 stars Quilts are a lot like people.......2004-10-21

Quilts are a lot like people. They are not overnight undertakings. They seldom turn out the way they were intended. Colors change when you run short of fabric. Edges misalign where you least expect it.

When Carol Nielson and her husband inherited an album quilt-half a quilt, to be precise-she had no idea of the journey on which the fragile folds of appliqués and painstaking stitches would call her. Created in 1857 by the women of the Salt Lake City LDS 14th Ward, the quilt was raffled off to raise money for the poor, the Perpetual Immigrating Fund, and for various Mormon charitable enterprises. Each block was designed and signed by one of the women, many of whom were wives of leading church authorities.

Nielson's desire to find the quilt's other half, and to find out more about the women whose legacy she had-both literally and figuratively-inherited, led her back in time through countless lives of hardship, joy, and spiritual conviction in the face of adversity.

Filled with detailed photographs of the quilt and images of those who stitched the blocks, this book is a stirring read, a rich and beautiful testimony to women whose hands shaped not only thread and cloth, but also a state, forging a community with their pioneer spirit.

"Carol Nielson has not only brought together two halves of a quilt, she has restored a forgotten community of women. Her patient research has transformed a family relic into a communal treasure."
-Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, author of A Midwife's Tale: The Life of Martha Ballard, Based on Her Diary, 1785-1812

"A vital contribution to Utah's rich history adding to an unfortunately under-appreciated and under-documented part of our history-frontier women."
-William Slaughter, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Historical Department

"A compelling and thorough study of a quilt, the pioneer women who stitched it, and ultimately, the Mormon experience that defined them."
-Kae Covington, author of Gathered in Time: Utah Quilts and Their Makers, Settlement to 1950

Carol Holindrake Nielson has a BA in English education from Utah State University. She has been a teacher, tutor, and an historical interpreter at Mount Vernon, Virginia. She lives in Layton, Utah.

      Book Description

Among the many countries that underwent transitions to democracy in recent decades, only Russia is as important to the United States and the world as Brazil. The fifth-largest country and population in the world, with nearly one-half the inhabitants of Latin America, Brazil has the world’s ninth-richest economy. Given the nation’s size and influence, its capacity to achieve stable democracy and economic growth will have global impact. Understanding democracy in Brazil is therefore a crucial task, one which this book undertakes.

Theoretically, the author argues that most party systems in the third wave of democratization, after 1974, have distinctive features that require us to reformulate theories about party systems generally; previous works have paid scant attention to the importance of variance in the degree of institutionalization of party systems. The author also argues that many third-wave cases underscore the need to focus on the capacity of the state and political elites to structure and restructure party systems from below.

Empirically, the author studies the Brazilian party system and democratization, with particular reference to the 1979-96 period. He underscores the weakness of the party system and the resulting problems of democratization. He argues that the party system is poorly institutionalized, explores the reasons for the difficulties of party building, and addresses the consequences of weak institutionalization, which leads him to reaffirm the central significance of parties in the face of widespread skepticism about their importance.

In recent years, a growing number of citizens have defected from the major parties to third party presidential candidates. During the elections in the past two decades, minor parties like those led by George Wallace and John Anderson, as well as independent efforts such as Ross Perot's 1992 presidential campaign, have attracted more support than at any time since the 1920s. Third Parties in America explains why and when the two-party system deteriorates and third parties flourish. Relying on data from presidential elections between 1840 and 1992, it identifies the situations in which Americans abandon the major parties and shows how third parties encourage major party responsiveness and broader representation of political interests.

4 out of 5 stars Reasonably thorough examination of American 3rd parties.......2002-05-26

For those interested in the history and contributions of 3rd parties in American politics, this is a very good book. Though now somewhat dated, Politics at the Periphery remains worthwhile reading both for individuals and in Political Science and History courses on American political parties. Neither the historical contributions or 3rd parties, nor their continuing potential as catalysts for meaningful political change are sufficiently appreciated in society today. Gillespie gives us a means of rectification. We would be well served if Gillespie would revise the book in light of the roles of 3rd parties the 2000 elections in particular.

As for weaknesses, Gillespie almost completely ignores La Raza Unida Party. While the party was relatively short lived and confined primarily to Texas--though it had some temporary success in expanding the party to other Southwestern states with relatively large Mexican-American populations--the party's impact on Texas politics (with clear ripple effects on national politics) was profound. Prior to La Raza, the Texas Democratic Party was a white boy's party in virtually every sense of the word. The clear threat of La Raza compelled Texas Democrats to open the party to Mexican Americans and, in the process, also assisted in making it more open to African Americans. These changes helped to fuel the exodus of white racist Democrats into the Texas Republican party, spurring Repbulican ascendency to domination in the State and contributing to the ascension to the White House by both George H. and, especially, George W. Bush.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent resource on obscure US political parties.......1999-06-13

Presented in meticulous detail of certain events pertaining to several third parties; chronicles lots of information from the charisma of Eugene Debbs to the recent outrageous quotes of H. Ross Perot. Even the Libertarian party is covered well. This book was researched for over a decade and Gillespie has some surprise interviews contained therein, interviewed a leader of an American Nazi party. A must-read for those interested in old and current fringe parties in our two-party system. Gillespie's style of writing is pleasing to typical political science junkie.

        Book Description

More Americans now identify as political independents than as either Democrats or Republicans. Tired of the two-party gridlock, the pandering, and the lack of vision, they've turned in increasing numbers to independent and third-party candidates. In 1998, for the first time in decades, a third-party candidate who was not a refugee from one of the two major parties, Jesse Ventura, won election to state-wide office, as the governor of Minnesota. In 2000, the public was riveted by the Reform Party's implosion over Patrick Buchanan's presidential candidacy and by Ralph Nader's Green Party run, which infuriated many Democrats but energized hundreds of thousands of disaffected voters in stadium-sized super-rallies.
What are the prospects for new third-party efforts? Combining the close-in, personal reporting and learned analysis one can only get by covering this beat for years, Micah L. Sifry's Spoiling for a Fight exposes both the unfair obstacles and the viable opportunities facing today's leading independent parties.
Third-party candidates continue be denied a fighting chance by discriminatory ballot access, unequal campaign financing, winner-take-all races, and derisive media coverage. Yet, after years of grassroots organizing, third parties are making major inroads. At the local level, efforts like Chicago's New Party and New York's Working Families Party have upset urban political machines while gaining positions on county councils and school boards. Third-party activists are true believers in democracy, and if America's closed two-party system is ever to be reformed, it will be thanks to their efforts.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books on third party politics.......2004-06-02

This is easily one of the best books on late 20th century third party politics out there. As a journalist who covers third parties this election year, I found this book to be immesely helpful in its analysis of the Reform Party effort as well as a superb account of Nader's unsuccessful 2000 run. If you are reading just one book on third party politics, this should be it.

5 out of 5 stars riveting history of Reform Party in year 2000.......2002-03-11

This book contains a riveting history of the Reform Party during the period 1996-2000. It seems to be the only book which has this history. It tells how Ross Perot lost control of the Reform Party to Pat Buchanan.

There's plenty of other fascinating material in the book also, especially about the Green Party, and new material about how Jesse Ventura was elected Governor of Minnesota in 1998, and about how a majority of justices on the U.S. Supreme Court are hostile to new and minor political parties (this conclusion is clear from Sifry's account of the Forbes debate decision, and the Twin Cities Area decision about "fusion").

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read For Any Fan of Sifry's.......2002-03-08

Having read Micah Sifry's articles for years in the Nation, I couldn't wait for this book to come out. And out it came! This book hits exactly the right notes, and is filled with information. If you care about politics and the way that politics effects your life, buy this book and read it NOW! It will change your life.

                Book Description

This is a study of the formulation of British policy towards the American colonies during the crucial period between the Boston Tea Party of December 1773 and the American Declaration of Independence in July 1776. It is set against the background both of British public opinion and of the developing resistance movement in America. Peter Thomas examines the constraints on British policy-making, and analyses the failure of the colonists either to respond to British overtures or to produce positive proposals of their own. He shows how the crisis escalated as the Americans moved from constitutional demands to a military response, and finally took the decision to separate from Britain. Tea Party to Independence is a scholarly and comprehensive exploration of one of the most important phases of American history. It completes Professor Thomas's acclaimed study of British relations with the American colonies, begun in British Politics and the Stamp Act Crisis 1763-1767 (Clarendon Press, 1975) and The Townshend Duties Crisis 1767-1773 (Clarendon Press, 1987).
