As a favor for a friend, a bright and talented young woman volunteered to read her poetry to a group of prisoners during a Black History Month program. It was an encounter that would alter her life forever, because it was there, in the prison, that she would meet Rashid, the man who was to become her friend, her confidant, her husband, her lover, her soul mate. At the time, Rashid was serving a sentence of twenty years to life for his part in a murder. The Prisoner's Wife is a testimony, for wives and mothers, friends and families. It's a tribute to anyone who has ever chosen, against the odds, to love.

Rashid was and IS perhaps the BEST MAN SHE WILL EVER BE BLESSED FOR REST
of her living days to come across.

they were great together you can FEEL his SEVERELY INTENSE AMOR for her
but yet she did say he was the BEST MAN SHE EVER MET,AND the MOST BEAUTY,
most beautiful man inside and out she ever came across laid her eyes on

to give the ending let us just say she leaves us in TEARS emotions running
wild during each chapter but was completely ambiguous towards the ending
but yet we really did not know what HAPPEN AT THE END OF THEIR so called

good book giving it because of how it ended in the book so ambiguous and
later what i did actually find out about her and rashiid i am giving it
a 4 star NOT five,because of her giving up it seem later on and afterward.
but do love the fact the daughter they do now share around 8 now or 9 yrs
old will always be part of them for eternal.just too bad their love was
not....

Unimpressed, only disturbed!.......2007-03-19

The author, Asha Bandele, is a talented writer, but she should have utilized her talents on a more positive subject matter. An inmate is not to be glamorized, but should be punished, only! Her self-esteem, which she admitted to, was very low, so she was vulnerable to any negative situation. The writing was very descriptive and should have been targeted to a more worthy cause. Overall, the memoir was very informative, it described the prison system as very isolated like it should be. Afterall, the prisoners are there for a reason they committed crimes and should be punished with very little if any civil rights.

Great Read! Must have for wives/girlfriends of inmates! .......2007-01-09

I too met my husband while incarcarated and found a beautiful friendship that turned into a wonderful marriage. It was nice to read something that didn't downgrade the inmate, and to actually listen to someone else's struggles, and tribulations with the prison system itself. Who at times treat the loved ones as if they themselves committed the crime. Asha's book was well written, I cried through the wedding, as I felt the same way on my wedding day. I wouldn't change my life for the world and am glad I found my soul mate, no matter where he is, and thanks Asha for putting our voice out there! Job well done!

Slow read.......2006-12-14

Although I am working my way through the pages of this love story, it is going rather slow for me. As far as I have read the story is one of love and passion. Unconventional and unconditional love. Bandele is a great writer, and use her ability to tell of a love that was born from the least expected of circumstances. She embraced the situation as it became more apparent to her this was going to be her lifes work as well. Although it is taking me awhile longer to read through the story, I am intriqued by bandeles writing and will continue to read her material.

This is a personal story of three people sharing many years of their life during a period in which our country was involved in military conflict with Vietnam. Reading this will help one to understand what commitment it took in survival and coping with life. The endurance of people in the book is remarkable and leaves one to better understand that love and devotion to the military members and their families does not go without great sacrifices.

Dora Griffin Bell tells the love story of being married to two Vietnam POW heroes but after reading "The Heroes' Wife", you realize Dora is also a hero. Her strength and courage during the worst of times makes her a role model for all military wives.

The book is written in such a way, that after completing it, I felt like Dora and I spent the weekend together as she told me about her experiences waiting 6 years for the return of her husband who was shot down in Vietnam and the joy of meeting Jim Bell (a returning POW) who has been her love (and husband) for the past 30 + years.

This is an inspiring story of love, courage and patriotism but you do not have be associated with the military to enjoy reading it. It is a reminder of the sacrifice our service people and their families make everyday. Something we all need to remember!

This is a very accessible overview of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, its history, the principle players in its creation and distribution, as well as the numerous court cases that have debunked its validity. The text is a bit dry, but it would be very useful in the context of a high school classroom or library.

The Plot; a Forerunner to Mein Kamph.......2007-05-14

This animated approach to an old story about a world-wide Jewish plot to
take over the entire world is as chilling as it is artful. Will Eisner is
quite talented in his ability to render figures in animated form. His re-telling of this nineteenth century story familiarizes us with the material
that Adolph Hitler no doubt utilized in his own concoction of a worldwide
Jewish take-over plot as described in the latter's work, Mein Kamph.
This book should be a requirement for those who are serious students of
the Holocaust, of sociology, and of anti-Semetic written works.

but well-done at its core: I think the side-by-side comparison of the Protocols and the work it was plagiarized from is by far the most compelling part of the book. However, I did have some trouble keeping the characters straight at the start of the book.

Christians: Don't Be Deterred By The Preface..........2006-12-22

Cartoonist Will Eisner's graphic narrative format is ingeniously well-suited for portraying the absurdity of the fraudulent and ridicule-worthy #1 antisemitic book of all time: The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, a plagiarized fiction passed off as fact. Both the format and the eerily intriguing cover might be especially attractive to teens, and the book would be a great addition to any high school library.

Eisner starts off with The Protocols' origin in France and Russia, then traces its resilient spread through time and geography. One of the most impactive parts of the book is when it visually depicts side-by-side comparisons of the Protocols with Maurice Joly's Dialogues in Hell Between Machiavelli and Montesquieu, the near-identical similarities so outrageous how anyone can believe this stuff as true is dumbfounding. The fascinating story maintains a fast pace, noting The London Times exposing of The Protocols as fraudulent, Henry Ford's appropriation of the lie, use of it by Hitler, legal rulings against the Protocals in Switzerland and South Africa, and more...yet it will not die, even after a U.S. Senate report busting it as a "Fabricated 'Historical' Document." Spain, Argentina, USSR, India, Egypt, Italy, the KKK, Lebanon, Japan, Turkey, Hamas, and so many others helped perpetuate the myth of an international Jewish conspiracy responsible for every bad event. The book ends with 2004, and so does not cover the present-day use of the Protocols on Islamic websites, the 2006 incident of a Hollywood figure spouting off about Jews responsibility for all wars, or any of the other new forms of Protocolsesque propaganda such as blaming social and political ills on some conspiratorial controlling "Israel lobby."

The Plot keeps its focus on key peoples, places and events involved in The Protocols' history, not delving much into the historical contexts or the specifics of The Protocols' 24 items. The strength of the book is in its appealing format that manages to make a powerful presentation without being pedantic, an enjoyable read about a descpicable topic. There is one serious (and ironic) flaw early in the book: In the Preface Eisner in talking about "devices that antisemites used to promote their message" says, "There had to be some weapon other than the ancient Christian Gospels' condemnation of Jews that appeared again and again and resurrected itself, vampire-like, to reinforce antisemitism." This is a sure way to alienate Christians, surely part of the target audience for this educational book, who might likely not make it to page one of the book proper, because of Eisner's misrepresentation of the Gospels and perpetuation of what we Christians consider to be a "big lie" or myth about our faith and because of the loss of credibility caused by Eisner purporting to be correcting a prejudicial lie while hypocritically propagating another. By his general, out-of-context reference to "Christian Gospels' condemnation of Jews," Eisner does what antisemites misrepresnting the name of Christ have done, that is he falsely makes it seem as if the Gospels are against the Jewish people and thereby justify antisemitism. Hopefully future editions of this book will remove this divisive and dishonest statement that isn't even about the focus of the book anyway, and is the reason for the 4-star rating.

Powerful and fascinating.......2006-11-21

This book really shows how even a laughably unlikely conspiracy theory can be wildly effective when packaged properly. Towards the end it discusses the continued use of the Protocols worldwide as anti-Semitic propaganda. Frightening and enlightening.

Elementary school level.......2003-01-12

I ordered this book because I thought it would provide an introduction to the politics of the Dominican Republic. When I got it, it reminded me more of a mixture between a tacky guidebook and an elementary school social science book. It does present some insight into the historical, economical and political conditions of the country, some of them even differing from the mainstream image, but it is all very limited in scope and not very useful. If you want a guidebook, I'd suggest Lonely Planet a million times before this one. When it comes to a political review of the country, I have unfortunately had difficulties in finding one. But surfing the web for a couple of hours will certainly provide more useful information than a copy of this book.

This book is a much needed new insight on Dominican Republic where I travelled a lot a few years ago. It is very interesting situation with haiti and the author adresses cultural issues sensitively but informatively. The book is very easily to read and has a good order.

This book has dealt well with subjects like the economy, politics, and local places to visit. Unfortunately, I found the information on the history and cultural identity of the Dominicans to be lacking information. For example, When Howard spoke too briefly of the Taino Indians or how the Dominicans have a need to be more "Indian". He was totally incorrect. The author does not hold a strong enough argument or facts to support this. He leaves the reader with much confusion about the Dominican identity.
