Great Book.......2000-02-26
If you enjoy drama as much as I do you will enjoy these biographies and plays about famous African-Americans. I liked it because it includes doctors, artists, inventors, educators, athletes and civil rights activists. Kids and adults can read about them and act out a drama or reader's theatre production of the life of the individual. Social Studies skits are hard to come by and this one is easy enough for all ages of readers and beginning readers.
Book Description
The focus of Fernand Braudel's great work is the Mediterranean world in the second half of the sixteenth century, but Braudel ranges back in history to the world of Odysseus and forward to our time, moving out from the Mediterranean area to the New World and other destinations of Mediterranean traders. Braudel's scope embraces the natural world and material life, economics, demography, politics, and diplomacy.

Still the Undisputed Masterpiece.......2007-07-16
You need to have been an apprentice historian in the mid-sixties to appreciate the impact this book had on Europeanists. I was thirty-one years old in 1967. I had taught history in high school for eight years and picked up a master's in history at NYU, and I was starting my Ph. D. program in history at Yale, concentrating on early modern European history, and within that specialty, on medieval and early modern political theory. (Later, when I taught college, my specialty course was on Machiavelli, More, Erasmus and Guicciardini.)
Braudel had just published the second edition of his masterpiece. The book had been significantly rewritten and was about a third longer than the original edition. But it was available only in French, which I read well but exceedingly slowly. The first edition --but not the second-- had been translated into Spanish, my preferred second language, so I swotted the Spanish first edition for orals. Reading it in a foreign language, it was too much in a limited amount of time to absorb and integrate with what I already knew about the times. I more or less flubbed the Braudel question in my orals. (In contrast, I did a killer job responding to a question about Ernst Kantorowicz's The King's Two Bodies: A Study in Medieval Political Liturgy.)
Later, teaching a winter term course in college, I assigned the by-then-published English translation of Braudel's second edition to my students, giving myself --at long last-- an opportunity to read it in my native tongue. I was floored! The masterful use of maps and graphs to show hitherto unnoticed trends in history, the wealth of illustrative detail, the scope of his view! Of all the masterworks of the first two generations of Annales historians --Bloch and Febvre, Braudel's other works, Le Roy Ladurie, Aries, Duby, etc.-- Mediterranean is still the undisputed masterpiece on early modern European economic and social history.
Well Balanced........2006-02-24
This book is a very detailed starting point for Renaisance fans. At its heart this is a socio-economic history. The clever inclusion of climate and geographic conditions presuasively explained why prosperous Capitalism grew in some regions while others remained stagnant. Chapter 5-"The Human Unit" was the most informative. Most facets of history are here for the reader to absorb. This is the type of book we all wished we had in school.
An education..............2004-04-07
I have been keenly interested in world history for nearly 20 years. I read, on average, 30 non-fiction historical accounts per annum. With rare exception, I have always felt up to the task of both completion and comprehension. Braudel is an entirely different animal. What Braudel has presented in the form of 16th-century Mediterranean history is formidable, innovative, and exhausting.
Braudel's narrative weaves itself through overlays of historical strata that demand as much from the reader as any contemporary written history available. His is not a mere linear schedule of cause and effect, but a finely crafted history of regional parallels which render the methodology as thought provoking as the content.
Fully one-fourth of the book is devoted to economics in such painstaking detail that, while the specialist may revel, the layman may grow foggy, uninterested, and, unfortunately, bored. But, this does not detract from the overall value of Braudel's effort. The Mediterranean and the Mediterranean World is a singular achievement in written history which offers the reader a vantage point that I have yet to find elsewhere. 5 stars.
A Fitting Finish to an Astounding Work.......2003-08-16
I have written a review of the first volume of Braudel's history of the Mediterranean, and here will only say that it is necessary to read this second volume in order to appreciate what Braudel began in the first volume. The second volume is the more typical "history of events", but as Braudel concludes -- and correctly so in my opinion -- the history of events is founded on geography, demographics, and social and economic history. Braudel builds this foundation in the first volume, and the two volumes must be read jointly in order to fully appreciate Braudel's astounding accomplishment.
An Amazing and Exhausting Opus.......2003-08-16
Braudel's text on the Mediterranean is considered one of the contemporary classics of historical writing, and I can see why. It sets out to convey a total history of the Mediterranean world in the latter half of the 16th century, but ranges over so much more territory in order to achieve this objective. Just as Jared Diamond builds a foundation on geography, climate, and local flora and fauna in _Guns, Germs , and Steel_, so does Braudel begin his history. However, he does not stop there, and moves on to cover social and economic history, and, in the second volume, deals with the more standard "history of events" typical of most historical literature. Do not skip the second volume, as the tapestry Braudel weaves is not complete without it. The text is very detailed, too detailed at points, but I believe this gives the reader confidence in the authority of the writer. Clearly Braudel has done exhaustive research. You, too, will be exhausted by the time you finish this magnum opus.

highly useful book on basic probability with calculus.......2003-07-18
A friend of mine had Carol Ash as his professor for probability theory back in the late '80s and he remembers her quite fondly. Upon looking through the book he told me this a write-up of her lecture notes. Taking probability (a notoriously difficult subject) around the same time I didn't get so lucky. The professor was decent but the book was not and I struggled with probability topics (though curiously enough, I still have it and use it as a reference--time cures all wounds :).
Much later I taught probability and statistics and drew a lot of examples, problems, and explanations for class from this book. It's quite good and very well written, worth your time if you need some extra help understanding your textbook (many of these are shockingly bad) or for self-study. One big selling point is that the problems are quite thoroughly worked out with intermediate steps explained.
Helped Me Learn a Difficult Subject.......2003-04-11
Like a good tutor, the "Probability Tutoring Book" explained and clarified points that I'd learned from my instructor and textbook in introductory Probability. Ash's explanations are often very helpful, and her book is loaded with good practice problems. The section on Combinatorics is probably a little too difficult, but I finally managed to grasp the concepts by consulting and doing problems from an old, very helpful book from the library: "Probability: A First Course" by Mosteller, Rourke, and Thomas. Overall, I give Ash's "Probability Tutoring Book" a very high rating as an aid to mastering the fundamentals of probability theory.
Thank God for Dr. Ash.......2000-06-13
This is a truly terrific book covering the basics of probability theory, but it goes far beyond a mere topical treatment of the subject. I was preparing to take a graduate course required for getting a PhD in statistics, and this book was an excellent way to get a leg up in the course. It is clear to me that a great deal of effort and thought was put into making this an excellent text. Thank you Dr. Ash!

Tabloid Junk.......2006-04-28
I doubt the voracity of anything in this book... it is a way however for the author to use a famous name and face to promote herself. Fostering "hate" doesn't help anyone.
Sorry to ruin your day, but Dr. Phil is a Slimeball; just check the public record.......2005-11-10
This book was conducted by real award winning journalists if anyone would bother doing any research on the making of this book, not some tabloid reporters. None of the negative stories are refuted in the book because Dr. Phil chose not to respond to any of the allegations in the book. I'm sorry to brake the news to people but Dr. Phil is a slimeball. He really did leave the members of his gym high and dry and and really was severely disciplined by the the licensing board for his sexual exploits with one of his clients. Its all public record. Sure there are people with axes to grind, but not everyone can be lying. The overall portrait is not a mistake. He is a very ambitious manipulative man who will succeed at all costs. Money is king to him. Don't believe the hype. Believe the people who actually worked with him. The book is competetantly written and it is so great to see what a hyprocite this pedantic jerk really is.
This is a MUST READ book about Dr. Phil!.......2005-11-03
I just finished reading this book, "The Making Of Dr. Phil" which is an excellent book, and I recommend it to everyone who wants to see what the Wizard Of Oz looks like behind curtain.
It paints a clear picture of the kind of person Dr. Phil really is, a hypocrite! What is interesting is that this book did not receive much publicity, as there is an alleged campaign against the book by Phil, and most media outlets refused to interview the writers for fear of retaliation from Phil. It also shows that Phil is really just an expert psychological manipulator and a very aggressive entrepreneur. Here are some random bullet points I picked out of the book, it's a worthwhile read...pick it up now!
· Phil is not a therapist, and never really was. He hated doing therapy. He went into psychology as a way to make money. He is an expert negotiator, businessman. He is no longer even a licensed psychologist. Phil just uses psychology as a way to make money. He quit practice and went into the Court business, as that was a way he could use psychology as a weapon, and as a way to make a lot of money, and not have to deal with all these dumb people with their problems!
· Phil has quite a sordid past. His first Gym business went bankrupt, and there is lots of evidence that he was still selling to people, when they knew it was going under. They were just spending all the money that came in, and were not putting the money into the health club. They had people buy long-term contracts, and then sold these contracts to 3rd parties, and even after the gym went under, those folks STILL has to keep paying for it! This was based on a tricky contract Phil designed. After that company went under, Phil left in the middle of the night, and to this day the people who got shafted are still bitter about what happened.
· His first marriage was a disaster, he was controlling, abusive, and there were all sorts of charges of endless womanizing. His first wife speaks out very clearly on all of this.
· "You Seminars" which became Pathways, with Thelma Box, was pure sleazy "charismatic" seminar stuff. This is where Phil started to apply all of his salesmanship and psychological seminar tricks, and started to make some money. Thelma Box spills the beans on how Phil takes credit for other people work, and even tried to scam her near the end. Phil would also abuse the "volunteers" that worked for Pathways.
· Phil is NOT a registered psychologist anymore. He ran into trouble years ago, when a 19 year old woman lodged a complaint against Dr. Phil, she said he sexually abused her, pulling her into his lap, reaching into her blouse, etc. He was severely disciplined by his licensing board in a number of different ways.
· His new company, Courtroom Sciences, CSI, tested the loyalty of his employees by staging calls from people pretending to be from the media. His demands, perfectionism, impatience, infuriated outbursts created an atmosphere of fear, resentment, and anxiety. CSI was a 24/7 job for all his employees, they "own you". Dr. Phil behaved in a sexist manner towards his female staff, calling some of their work "an abortion". He was verbally abusive, swearing, calling a woman a stupid b*tch, etc. Former employees describe CSI as being like a "cult" in the demands it would place on them.
· Dr. Phil Show: Phil got a lavish office, but were very cheap with the crew, no food on-set, 16 hr days, he made the job a "living hell" for the crew, making it "the worst show they had ever worked on". He would yell profanities at his crew, making last minute changes and keeping people up all night. Even his wife Robin was interfering with the lighting, and caused the Emmy award lighting director to be fired! The staff all has to sign non-disclosure agreements, so they could only leak info out. Phil did not bother to learn the names of his crew.
· Phil's ego is so big, he refuses to have any other experts in psychology on other than himself.
· All guests on the show sign massive releases that release them from everything.
· He gets $125,000 per speech.
· He launched products called "Shape Up", in a deal with Alticor, the parent company of Amway.
· Phil presents himself as though he thought up all the valid psychological ideas he uses, he makes it seem they are all his own ideas. McGraw also doesn't seem to follow the APA guidelines or ethics, in how he deals with the people on the show.
· He tries to erase his ugly past from the record, and pretends it never happened. He filed for bankruptcy after his health club went out of business, then left town in the middle of the night, and didn't mention it again. The same with his first marriage, which was a disaster, with allegations of Dr. Phil cheating on his wife many times. He tries to pretend things in his life never happened.
· People are so afraid of Phil, that they will not talk about him, won't return calls, and expressed fear of retaliation from Phil.
90% Tabloid Journalism.......2005-05-20
I found this book to be predominately Tabloid Journalism. The majority of the book has the exact same tone & phrasing & spin as the rag mags. Just like the rag mags do, the authors took a few facts, a lot of gossip & rumor then added their version of armchair psychology & spin to create a sensationalistic waste of money. When you're done reading, it feels more like you've read a fiction novel than legitimate non-fiction. As any good journalist knows, if you can't get enough corroborating sources, you don't run the story. So why did they bother? Money?
Dr. Phil Basher!.......2005-05-13
If you are a fan of Dr. Phil's, I recommend that you not read this book. I felt it did nothing but tear apart, not only Dr. Phil, but his wife, kids, parents, etc. I'm not so naive to believe that the man is a saint, but it was annoying and obnoxious to read -- numerous times on every single page! -- that this man is a horror!
The jacket describes this book as a sweet story -- however, I liken it to those tabloid rags that only want to find the negativity in someone and go on and on about it.
For example, when Dr. Phil's father graduated college as a 21-year old, he barely passed with C's. When he went back years later, he had done much better. However, the book stated several times, "Well, he might have done better this time, but remember he almost flunked out before."
The book also constantly used derogatory words in describing Dr. Phil and his work. For example, instead of writing "Dr. Phil consistently tells his audience his therapy isn't for everyone," the book writes, "Dr. Phil 'admits'. . . ."
Every thing Dr. Phil did was torn apart. If I wasn't so interested in Dr. Phil's life, I would have tossed the book after the first chapter.
Not for nothing, but if this man is as much a terror as the book tries to convince you he is, I don't think he would be as successful in his business, in his (long) marriage or as a wonderful, loving, devoted father.
