Book Description
While recovering from radiation therapy, Suzanne Strempek Shea heard from a friend who was looking for help at her bookstore. Shea volunteered, seeing it as nothing more than a way to get out of her pajamas and back into the world. But over the next twelve months, from St. Patrick_s Day through Poetry Month, graduation/Father_s Day/summer reading/Christmas, and back again to those shamrock displays, Shea lived and breathed books in a place she says sells "ideas, stories, encouragement, answers, solace, validation, the basic ammunition for daily life."

Worth reading........2006-09-01
I would venture to say that any lover of books has toyed with the idea of working at the mecca for bibliophiles, a bookstore. Strempek Shea -- not just any book lover but also a bestselling author -- shows us what it's like on the other side of the cash register.
Shea has a way with words, and her turns of phrase are always skillful and often unexpected. I enjoyed the way she wove details about the publishing business with the details about the inner workings of the store and its many colorful characters.
She did seem testy at times, particularly when describing her reaction to some customers' requests. And I found her denigration of Bill O'Reilly to be unwarranted (what happened to nonjudgment??). And it was interesting that she -- who is so sensitive about her own name being spelled correctly -- misspelled the title of Mitch Albom's "Tuesdays with Morrie."
Those are just minor peeves, though, and overall I give this book a high rating. If you love the written word, you'll love this book .
Another Ho Hum Personal Memoir.......2006-01-11
I picked up this book because I thought it's setting in a bookstore would be interesting. However, it turned out to be just another ho hum personal memoir. Cancer surviving writer is lifted out of her depressed state and brought back to life when a bookstore owning friend calls and asks her to work a few hours a week in the store. The reader does get an interesting tidbit or two about the book publishing and book selling industries, but most of it is an awfully boring recitation of book signing tours or setting up displays for yet another holiday in the bookstore. The author's glib tone is annoying beyond belief and hardly endeared herself to me as a warm human being. The book lacks any organization that I can see and the author seems to have a problem crafting a complete sentence. The book abounds with incomplete ones. Nor do I understand the subtitle of the book as no romance, mystery or drama figures in the book. If you want to read a really fine personal memoir about the world of books I heartily recommend Michael Dirda's, "Open Book".
I felt like I was there!.......2005-08-21
Suzanne's book: Shelf Life was a very enjoyable read for me. Having grown up in Western Massachusetts, and a life-long book-lover, I frequented many of the quaint, unique bookstores she mentions throughout this wonderful book.
Thanks Suzanne!
Un bookish Un-fun book.......2005-07-06
The book reads like a shallow, way too long magasine article.
The shop seems to specialize in self help books, so there's hardly a literary feel to it. The style too is annoying.
For example, she writes that "her dad wasn't big on books".
I would have expected a slightly "bigger" vocabulary then that.
Reads like a first draft.......2005-06-14
I will confess that part of the reason Ms. Shea's writing style bothers me so much is that it reminds me of my own...at least before I get down to the serious business of revising and editing, which she seems to have skipped. Her intelligence and energy do shine through, but she goes off on long, book-reportish tangents about nearly every title she comes across (and she works in a bookstore, remember), without even going into more depth than the back cover blurbs. There is no logical organization or progression of ideas, personalities or events; it's a lot like listening to random breakroom chatter. News flash; it's not so very uncommon for authors to work (or to have worked) in bookstores. This type of environment draws literary types. She acts like she's the sole human being ever to have attempted such a groundbreaking step. Get over yourself.
Book Description
It is the contention of the author that the major events of the past, the wars, the depressions and the revolutions, have been planned years in advance by an international conspiracy. This view is called the Conspiratorial View of History, and is definitely not the view held by the majority of historians today. The more traditonal view is called The Accidental View of History, and it holds that no one really knows why events happen--they just do.

Conspiracies and Truth: Practice or Theory?.......2007-06-01
I have had this book since about 1985, when I was 18, and I have read every chapter at one time or another. Since very few chapters are related to each other, this book is more like a collection of pamphlets than a single volume, which is fine with me.
When I was young, immature and highly impressionable, I thought the claims and message of this book were of utmost importance. I have since learned otherwise. The truth about evil acts committed by government are important, but without the right philosophy from which to view those facts, they are useless. (There is no such thing as a 'bare fact.' 'Facts' only aquire the value that their viewer imputes to them, which is determined by that viewer's presuppositions. Facts, fossils, statistics, results are just like a fiat dollar. They have no intrinsic value. Their value is subjective, not objective. Study Gordon Clark's dogmatism and you'll understand.)
In The Unseen Hand you read about the ACTS of tyranny and the violation of Austrian (read: Christian) ideals such as private property rights, personal freedom, the right to the medical treatment of your choice, laissez-faire capitalism, sound money, and the evils of legal plunder, false philanthropy, economic interventionism, and more. The problem with the conspiratorial view is that it focuses on evil intent (to murder and enslave or cause widespread suffering) as of primary importance. While this is probably true in many cases, I have come to see it as immaterial. This is a dead-end road. You can't do anything about it even if it is true, and promoting these ideas will profit you nothing. In fact, doing so will be socially counter-productive to your own goals. If you follow my advice, you'll be taking a short-cut to what you would learn by experience anyway. Let me save you the trouble.
In Austrian economics we leave such speculations behind to focus on the principles and theories which we see violated in all of the accounts found in The Unseen Hand. If governments followed Austrian theory, there would be no conspiracies. If the majority of voters were educated in Austrian theory, and let their voice be heard, governments would not enjoy the power they now have. The Unseen Hand focuses on evil ACTS (practice); Austrian economics focuses on evil IDEAS (theory). All ACTS are the practice of some theory. Without the knowledge of THEORY, your moral philosophy concerning the ACTS will be disjointed and inconsistent. So, while I encourage you to buy The Unseen Hand, please don't stop there. Move on to Austrian economics and leave conspiratorialism behind.
And by the way, Epperson does provide some excellent theory concerning freedom and collectivism in the first couple of chapters of the book. Learning about the conspiracies will develop in you a healthy skepticism of government, even if some of them are a little far-fetched. And I'm not saying they are.
Whether the accounts in The Unseen Hand happen by design or are the result of stupidity, they are still sin. All of it is a violation of some biblical (Austrian) principle. What difference does it make, especially when they are so difficult to prove, and they are only allowed to happen because of the moral ignorance of the masses anyway? Stick with theory.
"NOTHING IS SECRET THAT WILL NOT BE REVEALED" (Luke 8:17).......2007-05-31
"The man in the street does not notice the devil even when the devil is holding him by the throat." ~Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
How many books have you ever read in which the author printed their home phone number on the first page, allowing readers to contact them directly? Well, you'll find Mr. A. Ralph Epperson's number just inside the stark black, white, and gold cover of his excellent "Introduction to the Conspiratorial View of History", THE UNSEEN HAND. I have never met Mr. Epperson, though I have spoken with him by phone on 3 or 4 occasions over the last 12 years; he is one of the nicest, most accommodating authors I've ever been in contact with, and this 1985 book is one I would strongly urge every red, white, black, brown, and yellow American who deeply cares about the Red, White, and Blue to read.
THE UNSEEN HAND is the first of Mr. Epperson's publications I perused - that was about a dozen years ago. I subsequently read several more, and while they all contained valuable information, this nearly 500 page tome with the small print and comprehensive approach to the infamous "New World Order" was easily his best.
(In the year 2000, I was practically forced by The Spirit to undertake an extensively detailed study of Freemasonry. This is far too complex a subject to address in this review, but that same year, I managed to persuade a high-ranking Mason to give me a personal tour of "The Most Worshipful Grand Lodge" of Phoenix, and I was granted a limited time to study that same afternoon in their library located in the Grand Lodge. Part of my mission was to confirm to my satisfaction that the quotations that Mr. Epperson used in his book "Masonry: Conspiracy Against Christianity" did indeed originate with genuine Masonic publications, and that he was not quoting out-of-context in order to twist and misrepresent their meaning. Not only did I find Mr. Epperson to be a very reliable researcher who was adhering to truth, but when I was unable to locate a particular book even in the Masonic library, he xeroxed the pages in question from his copy of it and mailed them to me at his own time and expense. A VERY nice gentleman! And for my part, I was happy to relate to him a few pieces of interesting information that I was able to gain knowledge of as a result of my guided Lodge tour by maintaining an "Aw shucks, gee-whiz, golly-gosh, I'm so impressed" attitude. It's amazing what you can learn by playing dumb. Of course, in my case, some folks swear it ain't an act.)
THE UNSEEN HAND is a thoroughly researched and referenced study that briefly examines nearly every aspect of the "New World Order" conspiracy, from Forms of Government to Science, from Laetrile to The Atomic Bomb, and everything in between, such as Secret Societies, The Federal Reserve, Population Control, Income Taxes, The Civil War, and about 32 other related topics. With each chapter addressing a separate facet of the conspiracy, obviously no subject herein is given a full treatment, for that you will need to search out books targeting a particular area in question, and those books ARE out there. Nevertheless, THE UNSEEN HAND is a remarkable overview, large and densely packed with solid information (including an index) that draws a lucid, meticulous, and faithful picture of the unseen forces that shape our world while we sit mesmerized in front of the glowing box of superficial and misleading images that serve only to fill our minds with the ideas "they" wish us to entertain.
Although this book does contain some, what on its face would seem to be, outrageous and insane charges, I would caution everyone not to dismiss ANYTHING out-of-hand. Dig deeper before dismissing! It has been suggested on this Product Page that Epperson's contention that Jesse James lived to the age of 107 and that Karl Marx was a satanist raises some doubt about the validity of his book. While I tend to believe that the outlaw's assassination by a Robert Ford bullet has been fairly well established now, there is reason to believe that James may have been a member of the Knights of the Golden Circle, as Epperson claims. And though Marx's connection to satanism is unproven (and thus Epperson ought not to have framed it quite so affirmatively), I've looked into that question sufficiently to state that the suspicion most definitely is not without merit. (See "Was Karl Marx A Satanist?" by Richard Wurmbrand.) As for Epperson's opinion of the John Birch Society: buy the book, dial his phone number, and ask him directly.
Overall, THE UNSEEN HAND is an illuminating Introduction to the Conspiratorial View of History by a very serious researcher. The book collects an enormous body of evidence from a massive amount of sources and organizes it in a very logical way. Along with "The Creature From Jekyll Island" by Griffin, "None Dare Call It Treason: 25 Years Later" by Stormer, and "Foundations: Their Power And Influence" by Wormser, I consider THE UNSEEN HAND a "must-read" for all American patriots. It may be a history book, but don't kid yourself, it is really all about our future!
This being the last review I intend to write for this website, I would like to close by quoting those immortal words of Admiral Yoey O'Dogherty, spoken to the brave men aboard the U.S.S. Queeg after the rout of Communist Chinese forces at the battle of Phatphuc Mao: "Men, we've kicked enough Red heinie for one day; let's get some pizza 'n' beer and study America's Constitution. We'll have strawberry blondes for dessert."
Very poorly written.......2006-10-02
While I am quite interested in the subject matter, the author's horrible presentation (including poor citations and inadequate attributions, grammatical and punctuation errors, poorly-constructed sentences that must be reread several times to understand the meaning, unnecessary explanations of the obvious [such as explaining who Rose and Joe Kennedy were and what "immutable" means] and fallacious reasoning make this book a complete and total loser. If you can find a copy of this book (which may not be easy to do since the author is self-published) in the hands of a friend or at your local library, for a good laugh you can read the chapter entitled "Science versus Reason" -- it's quite entertaining! I never laughed so hard.....
Unbelievable.......2006-08-23
Wow! What a contrast to what we learned in history classes in school. Obviously, when reading about secret societies, scandals, cover ups etc., one cannot assume that all is valid. However, this book is very stimulating. Good food for thought, e.g. "wow, what if this is true".
Epperson is very persuasive in his conspiratorial view of history. If you're a skeptic, you'll love this book. He does a great job of tying governments, wars, assasinations, to capital interests and economics. It's a great read.
Excellent new look on history.......2006-05-05
With conventional history books leaving many holes and questions as to why, this books starts here. The first 9 chapters educates you to full understand the remaining topics. This should be required reading in all history class in school to give a different perspective. This is a book I will read more then once; learning more each time.

SAM'S EARLY PLAYS ARE AMAZING.......2000-01-20
WOW! This book is absolutely electrifying. I was first turned on to Sam Shepard from reading "True West", one of his later amazing plays. As I read more and more I thought I had a good understanding of his writing: until I read this book. This book contains many of Shepard's earlier plays from the time he first landed in New York and, as his roommate Charles Mingus Jr. has said "Would go into a room with a ream of paper and come out two hours later with a finished play". If you have really enjoyed some of Shepard's later stuff, I definetly recommend this book to give you a fresh perspective on someone who literally turns "conventional theatre" upside down. If you are new to Shepard, you might want to tryhis later works first, only because they are easier to follow. These earlier works are very much like the "Beat generation"- throwing out speeches and sentences without punctuation, with tons of craziness happening on every inch of the stage. Sometimes the plays may be hard to follow, or confusing, but if you really "get" what Shepard is doing, you will love this book. Just be warned that all the plays are far from conventional theatre. If you are an "Our Town" type of person this isn't for you. If you enjoy Albee and Beckett, if you enjoy equal parts peace and chaos on stage, then check this book out.

Earthshattering.......2005-09-23
This book will galvanize the lukewarm and pampered Christian with it's amazing stories of revival Ethiopian-style. These people know what persecution is like and what it's like to walk in power with the Almighty. Just thinking about Brother Tekle and Erkenesh I get a lump in my throat!
WOW!!!.......2001-04-18
This is the amazing story of how Brother Teklemariam came to know God and of the mighty revival that is sweeping Ethiopia even as I type this. The stories may seem unbelievable, but they are true nonetheless. Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever.
If you enjoy Unseen Hands (only a corpse couldn't) I highly recommend you read the sequel Then Came the Glory. Just as awesome and power-packed and inspirational as Unseen Hands.
Deeply moving, filled with the Supernatural move of God.......1998-07-11
This book puts a supernatural hunger in your soul ! The events in this book are remarkable. One mans journey, not only to become a mouth peace for God, but how he leads thousands to the One God, Acts 2:38 message. This is how the revival in Ethiopia was started.
Awesome!! Powerful !! Extremely, deeply, moving !!.......1998-01-05
This book was strongly recommended by a friend a few years ago. Since that time I have read it many times, and I have given it as a gift often. The story reads like the book of Acts in its miracles, signs, and wonders. I will never forget the first time I read it, lying in bed sick, I shook as the power of God filled the room where I was. The story has in many ways changed my life as I realized that Jesus is still very much the same today as he was in the Bible, also the "strong", "deep", "fervent", prayer life of Bro. and Sis. Tekle challenged me to go far beyond where I was in my walk with the Lord. Only one other book has done as much for me as "Unseen Hands" that of course was the Word of God. I can't recommend this book enough!
Book Description
To a blind person, human touch is essential. In the absence of facial expressions, it reassures and comforts. But can you still feel the warm and soothing touch of an unseen God? Author and musician Jennifer Rothschild, who lost her vision at the age of fifteen, explains how God's touch works from the inside out, warming the heart, mind, and soul. It lifts weights that eyes could never see. It washes away the anguish of guilt, the bite of fear, and the ache of loneliness. With the gentle pressure of His hand on our shoulders, we can find our way through the darkest of nights.

Unseen Hands and Unknown Hearts.......2006-05-17
The documented story of how a spontaneous nationwide prayer network save a child's life when medical science had abandoned all hope.
Kathy Callahan, a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy, tells the gripping story of her daughter Deirdre's descent into a deep, life-draining coma as a result of Reye's syndrome. Despite the doctors' pronouncement that Deirdre would not live, the family refused to abandon hope and began to pray.
As word of Deirdre's condition spread, a prayer network mysteriously came into being across the United States. She miraculously emerged from her coma with no ill side effects.
The author weaves a suspenseful, yet practical and instructive story of how the family used prayer and alternative holistic therapies in restoring life to their daughter.
This book is a tribute to a family's love and to the power of prayer that transcended medical knowledge.

Book Description
In this new edition, Lester Brown outlines a survival strategy for our early twenty-first civilization.
The world faces numerous environmental trends of disruption and decline such as rising temperatures, falling water tables, shrinking forests, melting glaciers, collapsing fisheries, and rising sea levels. In Plan B, Lester R. Brown notes that in ignoring nature's deadlines for dealing with these environmental issues we risk the disruption of economic progress.
In addition to these environmental trends, the world faces the peaking of oil, the addition of 70 million people per year, a widening global economic divide, and the spread of international terrorism. The global scale and growing complexity of issues facing our fast-forward world have no precedent.

Best Yet.......2007-09-20
Plan B. 2.0 is the most comprehensive book I've found yet on the converging crises that we are facing in the world today. In Part I of the book, Lester R. Brown lays out each crisis, explaining the causes, and then goes on in Parts II and III, lays out a rational, well-thought-out,practical solution to the problems at hand. I gave my husband a copy of it to use for part of the Critical Issues for Law Enforcement class he's teaching at our local university. As far as I'm concerned, every American ought to have a copy and read it often and thoroughly. We need to be aware of what we're doing to ourselves and others. The frosting on this cake is that he gives us the tools we need to remedy the situation...if we act now.
Essential reading for every human on this planet.......2007-09-19
If you care about this planet and our journey upon it, this book is essential reading for the millennium ahead. I just wanted to add my five stars. Please read the other reviews for the overview of "Plan B: 2.0"
Plan B 2.0: Rescuing a Planet Under Stress and a Civilization in Trouble.......2007-02-06
We do have prophets for our time. Lester Brown is one of the most important among them. In his well founded search for truth and solutions for our demographic, ecological and economic problems of global dimensions, he powerfully opposes the four faces of destructive stupidity of our times: ignorance, refusal to discuss matters, denial, and faithful dysfunctionality. I made this book the present day Bible that must be read and discussed in my course on Bioethics: Perspectives on Human Life, at Le Moyne College, Syracuse NY.

Best Single Book for Both General Public and Broadly Read Specialists.......2007-01-26
It's a real shame that the publisher did not take the trouble to load the table of contents into the product information section provided by Amazon, because that alone should persuade anyone that gets to this page that the book is a MUST BUY MUST READ MUST SHARE.
Each of the following section titles has six sub-titles that I will not repeat here:
1. Entering a New World
2. Beyond the Oil Peak
3. Emerging Water Shortages
4. Rising Temperatures & Rising Seas
5. Natural Systems Under Stress
6. Early Signs of Decline
7. Eradicating Poverty, Stabilizing Populations
8. Restoring the Earth
9. Feeding Seven Billion Well
10. Stabilizing Climate
11. Designing Sustainable Cities
12. Building a New Economy
13. Plan B: Building a New Future.
Although an updated version of the first edition published in 2003, this version can be said to be both completely new, and finally ready for public consumption now that Al Gore has put Global Warming on the public mind.
I still prefer J. F. Rischard's HIGH NOON: 20 Global Problems, 20 Years to Solve Them for the general reader, and I still think E. O. Wilson's "The Future of Life" is one of the top three in this area, but this book by Lester Brown has the merit of consolidating and structuring detail in a manner I have not seen elsewhere.
I recommend the book be ready in conjunction with books by Herman Daly and Paul Hawken, in part because everyone is now starting to realize that green sustainability is in fact the non-negotiable first step for any business to survive into the next decade--natural capitalism.
Most intriguing to me, and the heart of the book on page 257, is the consolidated Plan B budget totallying $161 billion a year needed to meet all of the goals the author postulates.
BASIC SOCIAL GOALS
12B Universal primary education
04B Adult literacy
06B School lunch in 44 poorest countries
04B Assistant to pregnant women and preschool childen in 44 poorest
07B Reproductive health and family planning
33B Universal health care
02B Closing the condom gap (Bill & Melinda Gates can have this one)
EARTH RESTORATION GOALS
06B Reforesting the earth
24B Protecting topsoil on cropland
09B Restoring rangelands
10B Stabilizing water tables
13B Restoring fisheries
31B Protecting biological diversity
As the author points out on the next page, world military expenditures total $975B a year, with the US alone responsible for $492B (this was published before we all knew of the half trillion dollar cost of the Iraq invasion and occupation). Hence, the $161B a year total is a fraction of the total spent on out-dated military systems, and could be funded by the US alone if we had the right leadership and public consensus.
Personally, and based on other readings, I believe that the author is under-estimating the costs, and avoiding a focus on many other factors including the urgent need to eradicate transnational crime and end inter-state and civil war. This is, however, a superb start and ideally suited as a primer for any level of learning.
Readers interested in seeing a broader perspective that places the ten high-level threats (poverty, infectuous disease, environmental degradation, inter-state conflict, civil war, genocide, other atrocities, proliferation, terrorism and transnational crime) in the context of the twelve policies that must be managed as a whole by all nations (agriculture, debt, diplomacy, economy, education, energy, family, immigration, justice, security, society, and water), and that in turn oriented toward the urgency of keeping the eight challengers (Brazil, China, Indonesia, India, Iran, Russia, Venezuela, Wild Cards) from repeating our mistakes, can check in at Earth Intelligence Network.
Rescuing are planet and our civilization is going to be a great deal harder than the author suggests, and is going to need a massive awakening by the public as to the "true cost" of all that we are doing wrong. I expect that we will succeed, in part from top down efforts by Al Gore and this author among others, and in part by bottom up efforts where individuals can get from the Internet the "true cost" of any good or service in terms of water content, fuel content, sweatshop labor content, and tax avoidance status. Noami Klein's book, "No Logo" is recommended in this regard.
Over-all an absolutely superb piece of work that caps the author's decades of advocacy on behalf of the planet. There is no other person that has been focused on this topic with due diligence year after year.
Wake Up America.......2007-01-14
Lester Brown has been monitoring the state of the world for many years and is probably one of the most knowledgeable and authoritative people on this topic. The first half of the book, filled with many little known but interesting and important facts lets us know how a declining resource base at a time of rapidly increasing human population is taking us toward a very unstable and potentially dangerous world. In the second half of the book he spells out what needs to be done worldwide and how it can be accomplished with about 1/3rd of our annual US Defense Dept. expenditures if we wake up to the facts and act immediately.
The book was so factual and encouraging that I bought a dozen to share with my congregation in the hope of spreading the facts, stimulating concern, and seeing some personal action.
