Book Description
This book was inspired by Jennifer Jordan's 2003 National Geographic documentary special, "The Women of K2."
Climbers call K2 "The Savage Mountain." It is not quite as tall as Everest, but it is far more dangerous, located at the border of China and Pakistan in the deadly Karakoram range, which has the harshest climbing conditions and weather of any place in the world. Ninety women have climbed Everest, but only five female climbers have ever reached the summit of K2 alive. Three of these women died on the way back down the mountain, and the other two have died since their climb. Because these five women who defeated the most ferocious of all mountains have lost their own voices, SAVAGE SUMMIT told their tragic and compelling stories.
The terror and triumph of K2 was revealed through the stories of the few women who have succeeded in climbing it. The women in these stories are forced to deal with harsh conditions from the mountain and from the men climbing around them, often being treated unfairly or discrimated against in their struggle to get to the summit. SAVAGE SUMMIT also attempted to answer tough questions: Do female climbers rely too much on their male climbing partners? Are women prepared for the physiological and emotional rigors of K2? Are female climbers, because of the publicity and sponsorship opportunities afforded them, climbing the mountain without the proper training, endangering their own lives and the lives of those who climb with them?
Customer Reviews:
Great Adventure Reading.......2007-06-24
Savage Summit by Jennifer Jordan is a must read for those who appreciate true-life adventure stories. As a non-climber who lives vicariously through the adventures of others as told in their books, I can't attest to what really goes on during an expedition or the ins and outs of the social-politics of the climbing community, especially high altitude climbers. I can say that Jordan's book seems to be well researched and recounts the adventures of the five subjects in the manner that made me feel a part of their lives and their climbs.
As a collection of adventure stories the book did not disappoint me in the least. I will admit that I was expecting a book about the first five women who climbed K2 that was written by a woman would be heavily slanted with a sexiest bias against the mostly male community of mountain climbers. Instead I found the book to be about 5 people who have that special inner drive to climb who also happened to be women. In telling the stories of these special people, Jordan also describes the bias and prejudice that some were faced with as they joined expeditions led by experienced men. This is especially true in the telling of Polish climber Wanda Rutkiewicz's adventures when women were a rare sight in climbing and as Jordan tells Wanda's stories and the stories of the other women she acknowledges that each was a person in her own right with their own strengths and weaknesses. Putting gender aside, Wanda Rutkiewicz had a personality that alienated many outside of a handful of people who understood her and even those closest to Wanda admit she could be difficult on an inter-personal level.
In telling the story of Chantal Mauduit Jordan clearly acknowledges that Mauduit, a happy-go-lucky sort who enjoy much luck climbing 8,000 meters peaks, used her feminine and sexual attributes to her advantage and thus enjoyed an advantage as she manipulated the males on her teams to carry the heavy loads and break routes that she could easily follow on her summit attempts.
The stories of Liliane Barrard, Julie Tullis and Alison Hargreaves were all exciting recounts of their climbing careers and their ultimate climbs to the summit of K2. Each of these women were beloved by friends and family, each recognized the dangers in high altitude climbing and each of them struggled with the pull of their loved one against the pull of the mountains. Ultimately, the mountains won and each died as accomplished climbers, not women, doing what they were drawn to do.
Bottom Line: Savage Summit is a great adventure read about 5 people who loved climbing and were eventually drawn to the attraction of solving a problem that is much greater than the well worn routes of Mt. Everest on the world's second highest peak, K2.
Women's struggle to climb high.......2007-02-02
Easy read. Gives an interesting insight into the lives of these women, however it does not always paint a good picture of them. It does show how sexism plays a large part in mountaineering. Heartbreaking to read about the way they lived and died and the choices that they made.

Units of measurement..........2007-01-09
I was interested in a previous post that questioned the ability of a runner to cover "50 leagues or 175 miles per day," and discovered that an Ancient Roman league is equivalent to 2.22 km; therefore, 50 leagues would approximate 111 km or 68.93 miles - presumably a distance entirely possible for a top athlete of the day. Fascinating, huh?
This book is an excellent resource for students.
A comprehensive and accurate account of world history.......2003-05-18
This extraordinarily well written book contains every essential fact with which we all need to be familiar. No other book on the market offers so much information at such a low price. Furthermore, the structure of the book facilitates reading and also makes it more interesting. Needless to say, many history books nowadays present biased accounts of historic facts (after all, it is a well known fact that winners write history books). This book, on the other hand, provides a relatively unbiased and balanced account of world history. I have read a number of history books but none of them is nearly as well written and well structured as this one. In my view, this book should be a part of every student's book collection. Highly recommended.
Rewriting history, or fabricating it from whole cloth?.......2003-04-27
RE: A History of World Societies, Vol. B, by McKay, Hill, and Buckler. The following was taken directly from the pages of this text; chapter 14, page 460, last paragraph, left column:
ýThe average runner could cover about 50 leagues or 175 miles per day ý a remarkable feat of physical endurance, especially at high altitude ý but the larger the empire became, the greater the distances to be covered.ý
I had always supposed that genuine scholars wrote textbooks, and that they were intended as works of non-fiction. Instead, this text is more akin to Paul Bunyan; itýs a sort of South American version of American Folktales.
Upon reflection, I donýt know whether the appropriate response is outrage at the ignorance of the authors, or amusement at the gullibility of the (what ý apparently sleeping?) editors. Is the ubiquitous filter of political correctness the only scrutiny to which textbooks today are subject?
In my view, this passage calls into question the reliability ý indeed, the credibility ý of the remaining information. If such fundamentally simple information as this is worthless, to what level of factual scrutiny were the socio/political ideas subject?
On time like said.......2002-06-30
The book came in good cond.and on time!... Do business anytime..referred them to other classmates
An excellent resources for teachers and students.......2000-02-03
As a high school history teacher, I have found this book to be an excellent resource for lecture notes. It includes specific and detailed information to illustrate significant historical periods and events that I have not found anywhere else. For example, the section on the Renaissance contains facinating detail on the role of women and Africans in Europe at that time. I have also loaned this book to students because the authors clearly outline the "so what" of historical events.

Writing an introductory Western Civ text is a daunting task. Maltby and Hause have done an excellent job of representing events accurately and clearly. They have included interesting details that help students gain a feel for the people and the periods discussed. I highly recommend it.

Thick, but thorough.......2002-01-28
I am currently a student at Brown University, and in fact taking a class taught by the author himself, Tim Harris. The book is very thorough, covering every aspect of what used to be a period with very little literature. Of course, the writing is at times erudite, but Harris does a fine job of summarizing and dividing his chapters into appropriate sections. I highly recommend this book for anyone doing research on the time period; however, if you are looking for a relaxing read, try something a little lighter.
definitive account of the rise of English party politics.......1998-12-15
Harris, arguably the best young historian of the early modern period, has produced what by all accounts must be considered a gem. Drawing from a wide evidentiary base, he delves into the complexities of the court and country division, exclusion, the emergence of party, the Glorious Revolution and life under William and Anne before concluding his work with a comprehensive discussion of Jacobitism. A model of outstanding historical scholarship, this book is an absolute must for anyone even remotely interested in this period of British history.

Book Description
Offers a birds-eye view of society in France during the 'long' seventeenth century from 1589-1715, one of the most dynamic phases in French history Covering the reigns of the first three Bourbon kings - Henri IV, Louis XIII, and Louis XIV - the author explores the upheavals in French society during this period by looking at the traditional bonds which tied together the various classes and groupings. Using examples from the lives of real people, her unique approach discusses how the turbulence of the age threw these established relationships into disarray, and explains why, by 1715, France had become a more peaceful and civilized place. Book Description
This fascinating new book by Chun-shu Chang and Shelley Hsueh-lun Chang follows the career, times, and ideas of P'u Sung-ling (1640-1715) and focuses its discussion on his magnum opus, Liao-chai chih- i, or Tales of the Unusual from the Studio of Deliberation and Musing. P'u lived through the turbulent period of Ming-Ch'ing dynastic transition in the seventeenth century and he aspired, as did millions of young men of his time, to pass the Imperial Civil Service Examinations necessary for securing a government position.
While P'u did not attain his goal of becoming a statesman, having failed exam after exam for fifty years, he was not impeded in his intellectual and literary pursuits. When he died in 1715, he left a body of work including over 500 essays, 1,295 poems, 119 lyrics, 18 encyclopedias and handbooks, 20 operas, 100 folk songs, and 500 short stories. He went on to become one of the most well-known scholar-writers and the best known short-story author in Chinese history. The 500 stories in Liao-chai chih-i, which P'u composed in his self-styled capacity as historian, had the most lasting influence of any single work on the shaping of popular consciousness in China.
Following the life and literature of one man, this study sets out to detail the history of the Ming-Ch'ing dynastic transition in the East Shantung region. It is based on an exhaustive exploration of contemporary Chinese historical and literary sources, including local histories, clan and family records, autobiographical and biographical materials, folklore, essays, poems, and plays: in short, the entire range of literary sources. Using a comprehensive historical approach, the authors cover a broad array of issues relevant to the topic at hand.
Redefining History is an important source for the study of Chinese history and literature and comparative historical studies. It will also appeal to people interested in the relation between history and literature, issues of gender and class, race relations, biographical studies, and popular culture movements.
Chun-shu Chang is Professor of History, University of Michigan, and Honorary Professor of Chinese History, China. Shelley Hsueh-lun Chang is Visiting Associate Professor of History and Research Associate, Center for Chinese Studies, University of Michigan.

The book got a little bit longer with every turn of the page........2007-07-05
I was given this book as an award for winning psychology student of the department at my high school. I, as a psychology student, am not a fan of all the neuroscience, and I believe that's why my teacher chose this book for me. It started off interestingly and I really actually enjoyed the first two chapters. However, as the book continued, it just got a little bit longer and harder to read as I moved into later chapters. The author didn't really do a good job of staying on track, fully explaining his ideas, and then explaining them correctly. What made the book even worse was that he puts all of his numerical notes at the end of the book and not as footnotes. Therefore, I had to constantly turn back and forth and save two pages when I stopped reading.
I ended up just closing the book instead of reading the last 15 pages because I wasn't happy with the way Ramachandran did this.
Brief Tour of Human Consciousness.......2007-06-14
I have read, and own, several previous books by Dr. Ramachandran and have fully enjoyed every one of them. This book is less intensely full of scientific jargon than his prior books, but is every bit as enjoyable. For those who haven't read much, or any, books on the fascinating workings of the human brain this just may be the book to start with! I can promise you'll be hooked on the subject.
He is a talented writer who makes a difficult subject available to the non-scientist without your ever feeling talked down to.
Buy this book and be ready to make plenty of room in the science section of your bookshelves!
Not as good as his other book.......2007-06-05
I purchased this book after reading and loving "Phantoms in the Brain," also by Dr. Ramachandran. I was sorely disappointed. This book stands on its own; if it weren't for "Phantoms" I would have to rate this higher. However, this is merely a watered-down version of his earlier work: most of the content is the same and there is less of it. "Phantoms in the Brain" is nearly twice the length and, being the older book, still costs a little less. They're both intensely fascinating, but there is no reason to buy this book. Buy "Phantoms in the Brain" instead.
Read Phantoms instead.......2007-05-11
I read Phantoms in the Brain by the same author and was wowed, so I bought this book and was sorely disappointed that it really really is a shorter, less interesting version of Phantoms in the Brain. Don't waste your time on this book just buy Phantoms in the Brain. I wish I had read the other reviews earlier that said this before I ordered it!
It's all in your mind.......2006-08-22
V.S. Ramachanchandran has a produced a wonderful book which delivers exactly what its title promises.
Through patients he's treated we learn about brain anatomy, various physical disfunctions what they say about human limits and overcoming them and why some people associate color with numbers and why that has anything important to say about humans generally.
Along the way, Ramachandran says more noteworthy things about art and why people are attracted to it than any philosophy course or supposedly "learned" treatese attempting to answer the question of "what is art."
What's more Ramachandran has skill with the spoken language so that his ideas are readily accessible to the layman yet still relevant to the specialist (who will no doubt enjoy seeing his field of study through another's eyes).
An excellent read; an excellent book; an excellent purchase!

Since the earliest days of our nation, new communications and transportation networks have enabled vast changes in how and where Americans live and work. Transcontinental railroads and telegraphs helped to open the West; mass media and interstate highways paved the way for suburban migration. In our own day, the internet and advanced logistics networks are enabling new changes on the landscape, with both positive and negative impacts on our efforts to conserve land and biodiversity. Emerging technologies have led to tremendous innovations in conservation science and resource management as well as education and advocacy efforts. At the same time, new networks have been powerful enablers of decentralization, facilitating sprawling development into previously undesirable or inaccessible areas.
Conservation in the Internet Age offers an innovative, cross-disciplinary perspective on critical changes on the land and in the field of conservation. The book:
- provides a general overview of the impact of new technologies and networks
- explores the potentially disruptive impacts of the new networks on open space and biodiversity
- presents case studies of innovative ways that conservation organizations are using the new networks to pursue their missions
- considers how rapid change in the Internet Age offers the potential for landmark conservation initiatives
Conservation in the Internet Age is the first book to examine the links among land use, technology, and conservation from multiple perspectives, and to suggest areas and initiatives that merit further investigation. It offers unique and valuable insight into the challenges facing the land and biodiversity conservation community in the early twenty-first century, and represents an important new work for policymakers, conservation professionals, and academics in planning, design, conservation and resource management, policy, and related fields.
Customer Reviews:
A remarkably well-written book.......2002-12-13
I am interested in both new networks, American history and conservation, so I was not surprised that the content of this book was so strong. I WAS surprised that it was so well-written and that the connections between the past and the future were so thoughtfully drawn. I really enjoyed this book.
Imporant and interesting insights.......2002-11-01
The book fills an important void by asking whether the Internet and might affect land use in the United States-particularly whether it could have dramatic and largely negative consequences on large habitats in previously rural areas.
At first glance, this connection is not obvious. But, as Levitt notes, virtually every significant innovation in transportation and communications technologies (such as highways, telephones, and electricity) have spurred decentralization.
Starting from this premise, the various contributors offer readable, in-depth analyses of whether the Internet is having such impacts and, in an interesting twist, how organizations concerned about habitat preservation can tap the power of the Internet to further their goals.
The result is a volume that should be read by anyone interested in the intertwined fate of rural communities and the natural habitats that surround them.

CONSERVATION IN THE INTERNET AGE - FASCINATING.......2002-10-18
A very valuable and thought-provoking read, both personally and professionally. The book's historical sweep is impressive. Its range of contributors is also very broad and impressive - while I follow a good bit in the environment and conservation, this book offers many perspectives that I had not considered previously. A good book for those who love the dynamics of history, are fascinated by technology and its leaps, who protect and manage natural resources.
The book takes on the vexing questions of "When does change realize progress? And when does it not?" By juxtaposing nature and man's interaction with it, with the rapidly changing world of high technology, the book requires consideration of these questions. CONSERVATION IN THE INTERNET AGE makes one inclined to believe that people serious about the directions of land use and conservation need to be thinking about what Leviit calls "new networks." (I certainly didn't know what this meant before reading the book!) Overall, the book provides hope that new analysis and communications technologies will advance prudent long-term protection of land, water, and other natural resources.
