4 out of 5 stars Not Perfect.......2007-07-05

This is a good overview of the technology, but it is not, by itself, sufficient to prepare a novice for the RFID+ examination.

3 out of 5 stars Useful but not exhaustive.......2007-02-02

This is a useful (however not sufficient) book if preparing for the RFID+ exam. It is cleanly written and understandable, with an emphasis on simple facts, e.g. High Frequency tags transmit at 13.56 MHz. Check. Got it. There are a handful of contradictions in the book, e.g. on one page, LF tags are used for animal tracking, and on another page, HF tags are used for livestock tracking. ?!?!? It provides a solid, across the board overview of the subjects on the exam and as such makes a good intro book for a newbie. The practice questions at the end of each chapter are easy and there is only a single practice exam with ~50 questions on the CD. (The actual exam has 80).

Having taken the exam, I can assure you that this book is in no way sufficient to adequately prepare you for the actual exam on its own. You will need to either use a more exhaustive reference or supplement this with a second reference.

If you are looking for a single exam prep guide, this is not the one. If you are prepared to pick up ~3 books to cover all the bases, get lots of practice questions, reinforce knowledge through repetition, etc. then this book should be one of the ones you pick up.

4 out of 5 stars Good but not perfect..........2006-06-08

This book gives you a very good feel for the exam; and reading it from end to end atleast twice would give a good chance of passing the exam. I have passed the exam but I did not entirely rely on this book. Relying on this book entirely is not recommended.

For multiple choice questions, where you have to select more than one answer, the book fails to mention how many. This is not how COMPTIA exams work. It makes it very difficult for the reader to judge the sample test scores..

I ordered an e-book online through the OTA website and also got a discount, but it can only be enabled on one PC

Book Description

Continuing to put great classic and contemporary design within everyone s grasp, Chronicle Books proudly delivers the next four installments of the popular Compact Design Portfolio. Written by top design critics, these books cover modern masters whose work ranges from the cozily domestic to the aggressively avant-garde: Eva Zeisel, whose elegantly democratic housewares span a 70-year career; Ingo Maurer, who raises lamp and lighting design to a high art form; Gaetano Pesce, whose rejection of traditional good taste brought about revolutionary furniture design; and George Nelson, the impresario behind the Marshmallow sofa and other Herman Miller classics. Follow-ing the introductory essay, a visual gallery exhibits selections of the designers best work in photographs and sketches. Presented in an irresistible small format, this series encapsulates the life, work, and influence of the great designers of our time.

5 out of 5 stars I loved the book.......2005-08-25

The book was more informative of Eva's life and persectives on art than another I purchased at greater by twice the price! The photos were excellent and the pieces chosen for representation were all my favorites! The biography can't be passed over, for it is what has developed her into the admirable woman life and hardship has made her. I bought it to give to a close friend who is a potter, but now it's mine to keep! Janet

Book Description

With a trailblazing career that spans more than seventy-five years and continues to this day, with recent creations that include a Martini glass featured in Bombay Sapphire ads and vases for Klein-Reid, Eva Zeisel stands at the forefront of modern designers. Her works are a reflection of a profoundly independent vision and are featured in the permanent collections of museums throughout the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art.

In this lavishly illustrated, full-color book, the designer for the first time communicates the ideas that have guided and inspired her. Each aspect of the design process is analyzed—variety, spontaneity, line, contour, shading, and texture, among others—to show how the best works are the result of a dialogue between creator and object, the result of which is an environment that is pleasurable, comfortable, and elegant. The language in which this dialogue is conducted, “the language of things,” is one in which ZeiselÂ's fluency is unparalleled, and her thoughts, read alongside the photos of her stunning creations and those that have inspired her, make this book indispensable to every enthusiast of art, ceramics, and design.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good collection of short essays and photos from one of the most experienced designers in the world.......2005-11-08

Eva does not subscribe to the theory "newer is better." The artist/designer's observations "On Design," refined from years of experience in the world of art and product design, exhibit a warm attitude toward design along with a distaste for the modern movement she has seen develop since her birth in 1906.

Zeisel believes the modern movement focused too much on removing and simplifying. She discusses why the philosophy of `simplify, simplify,' and the expectation of modern designers to create a visual appearance entirely unique for each new product, has simultaneously increased novelty. "Our inherent belief in evolution has led to our appreciation of novelty. ... [Designers] often forget to tone down [a product's] over-interesting features, its novelty, because we ... want to show our skill." Creating products void of character, personality, and warmth is something Zeisel wants future designers to avoid.

Zeisel's reflection on evolution leading to appreciation of novelty is as applicable to 24 hour news channels as to the design of objects. Eva hopes the 21st century will bring beauty, harmony, loveliness, and elegance to design, qualities she believes were not aims of the 20th century's modern movement.

The book itself is well done. The 169 full-color and 75 black-and-white photos, the focus of the book, are printed cleanly and driven by a nicely flowing narration. There is no shortage of photos depicting Eva's creations, but there are even more pictures of objects that are Eva's inspirations or examples of ideas. One particularly jarring photo shows what the Chrysler Building may have looked like without the proper attention given to its structure. Other photos bring in many diverse inspirations to Zeisel, including Roman aqueducts, Japanese courtyards, 15th century toys, and modern sculpture.

Eva wants designers to take their job seriously but still carry whimsy. "The control and articulation of line and surface doesn't give a sensuous physical pleasure like molding clay, but it requires disciplined articulation" between maker and object. She entreats her fellow designers to "not overvalue the lines we first sketch when developing our ideas. Play with them to articulate what we want to say, clearly and beautifully."

Eva's "On Design" contains wonderful insight into design along with many beautiful photos. The variety of design topics will make a good, quick casual read for anyone who appreciates thoughtful art and design, especially from one of the most time-tested designers in the world.

                Book Description

Hegemony tells the story of the drive to create consumer capitalism abroad through political pressure and the promise of goods for mass consumption. In contrast to the recent literature on America as empire, it explains that the primary goal of the foreign and economic policies of the United States is a world which increasingly reflects the American way of doing business, not the formation or management of an empire. Contextualizing both the Iraq war and recent plant closings in the U.S., noted author John Agnew shows how American hegemony has created a world in which power is no longer only shaped territorially. He argues in a sobering conclusion that we are consequently entering a new era of global power, one in which the the world the US has made no longer works to its singular advantage.

                5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2007-09-24

This book was extremely helpful in explaining Hegemony and the global environment to me as a Global Health Student.

5 out of 5 stars Ignore the other review, read this book!.......2007-01-27

This is an original book which claims and makes an argument with historical analysis that contemporary globalization has developed out of the US geopolitical role in the world. So, rather than technology or capital simply driving globalization, the US has mediated the emergence of the world of flows that we see around us now every day. This argument will not be popular with either parts of the extreme left which sees the world as on automatic economic pilot or the US nationalist right which views the US as a blameless victim of foreign plots and subterfuge (pace Lou Dobbs). For the rest of us, except apparently a student of the author's who got a bad grade (see the other review), this book is well worth reading.

1 out of 5 stars One of the worst books for the subject..........2006-12-13

This is perhaps one of the worst books I have read on the subject as it circumvents real answers and provides circular logic without taking a definitive stance. After talking to the author, I believe the book falls into the author's "opinion" and nothing more substantive than that.

The Blue Ridge Mountains run 500 miles from Pennsylvania to Georgia and take in some of the eastern United States' wildest country, including seven national parks and many state parks and wilderness areas. The mountain chain also embraces, environmental journalist Steve Nash writes, 29 species of snakes, 70 species of mammals, more than 200 species of birds, 70 species of fish, 1400 species of flowering plants, and more than 130 species of trees--almost as many as can be found in all of Europe. The richness is astonishing, but also, Nash writes, seemingly unappreciated, for the Blue Ridge is now under threat from industrial, commercial, and residential development, with acid rain and other hazards affecting its many ecosystems. Guiding his readers through many scenarios on how these environmental problems might best be lessened, Nash points out that conflicting scientific data lends an "illusion of precision" to the idea, on one hand, that nature will automatically right itself or, on the other hand, that catastrophic change is irreversible. Neither case, he suggests, is strictly true, and he invites his readers to participate in the business of developing a vision for the Blue Ridge's sustainable future. Residents of the region and students of regional planning alike will find Nash's book to be of much interest. --Gregory McNamee

                Book Description

The mountain chain known as the Blue Ridge traces a 550-mile arc through Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Georgia. Along the way, it encompasses Shenandoah National Park, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Blue Ridge Parkway, seven national forests, numerous federal wilderness areas and state parks, and parts of the Appalachian Trail. It is the largest concentration of public lands east of the Mississippi and home to an astonishing diversity of plant and animal life. But as the most extensive natural area in the increasingly populous Southeast, the Blue Ridge ecosystem faces unique challenges in the next decades.

Drawing on scientific research in a variety of disciplines, journalist Steve Nash provides a clear and evenhanded introduction to some of the most hotly disputed environmental issues facing the Blue Ridge, including the invasion of exotic plants and insects, the explosive growth of suburban-style communities in natural areas, worsening air and water pollution, and the erratic management of national forests. Informative and highly readable, Blue Ridge 2020 takes a hard look at what is at risk in these mountains and what we—as the "owners" of the public lands—must do if we intend to preserve their future.

                Customer Reviews:

                5 out of 5 stars A most important owner's manual.......2000-11-14

Just the title provides food for thought: Blue Ridge 2020, An Owner's Manual, reminds us that the public has a responsibility for effective stewardship of the public lands in the Blue Ridge. I also like the play on words of 2020--hindsight is 20/20, and if we don't take a hard, clear look at what is happening to the ecology of the Blue Ridge and work hard to improve it, we will have deep regrets by the year 2020. The human scale of twenty years is very effective. I'm 31--what kind of Blue Ridge will I experience at 51? As a local environmental activist in the Page Valley, I find this book is a tremendously useful and motivating resource. In one book, Steve Nash provides an overview of specific problems and practical solutions. His writing style is clear and accessible. If you care about the health about the Blue Ridge or want up to date information about the quality of air and water in the mountains, this is a book you need to read. This is one of the best "state of the ecology" books I've read, and it is particularly useful for its regional approach.

                  Book Description

In this important book experts in science, economics, and law discuss key resource management issues in the greater Yellowstone ecosystem-among them the management of fire, elk, wolves, and bison-using them as starting points to debate the manner in which humans should interact with the environment of this region. Generously illustrated with special archival photographs of the Yellowstone area, it will be the major source of information on this area and a valuable resource for worldwide wildland preservation for years to come.

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive edited volume on management problems surrounding Yellowstone.......2007-05-20

Like many others,, this book examines ecosystem management in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. (Sidenote: why doesn't anyone seem to study the Greater Yosemite or Smoky Mountain Ecosystems?) The concept of "ecosystem management" has plenty of wrinkles to it - - hence the need for this book - - but the basic idea is to management both processes and outcomes at the level of an entire ecosystem instead of managing individual species.

The book focuses on three controversial issues, fire, elk and wolves. However, many other ecosystem issues appear through the book as well.

This book is explicitly multidisciplinary, with contributions from lawyers, economists, biologists, and land managers. The contributors address the kinds of topics that you'd want them to address, such as the role of top-level carnivores (wolves and bears), the consequences of elk (over)grazing, forest fire, and the like. The chapters fall into three rough groups - - the first, one the history and policy of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE) concept, varying approaches to ecosystem management, and then particular processes (especially forest fire). The book is intended for the specialist rather than the layman - - but specialists in one discipline won't have any trouble understanding contributions from other disciplines, and advanced-level undergraduates in many fields would be able to read the book.

Like any edited volume, the contributions vary significantly in quality. Some authors have a clear view of the "big picture," while others are more limited to their own specialty. The biologists tend to have the greatest tunnel vision, but John Craighead's chapter does a great job seeing biological issues in a larger historical and political context.

It's also dated in significant ways, reflecting debates over the northern range of Yellowstone in the 1980s and 1990s. Since the introduction of wolves in 1995, top-down regulation of elk by predators has supplanted the policy of "natural regulation" of elk by food supply that motivated many of these changes.

Nonetheless, if you're interested in ecosystem management, or in the management of Yellowstone National Park, you'll want to read this book. It doesn't really address topics outside of these, so the general reader will probably find it frustratingly specialized.

4 out of 5 stars Not totally for the layman.......2003-11-13

The essays compiled in this book are an excellent resource for someone who is trying to understand the complex issues surrouding the protection of the Greater Yellow Ecosystem. However, a number of the essays, in providing evidence to support the arguments are geared more toward the policy maker or toward the scientist who is gathering background information on the issues.

Not all of the essays are written in such a fashion that they are beyond the comprehension of the average reader. Some essays are written clearly and do provide an effective starting point for someone coming into the field to understand the issues surrounding issues such as fire policy or wolf management. Both of which are still hot topics in the region today.

Finally, many of the essays are better for understanding a historical perspective to the issues. Wolf reintroduction has occurred and now Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho are looking to have wolves delisted. The essays on wolf management are dated enough that they are a starting point to understand the underpinnings of the issues of today, rather than where we are going in the near future.

All in all, if the reader can move past some of the more technical aspects of the book, they will have a better grasp of how and why various management issues are occuring in this wonder of nature.

5 out of 5 stars What do the authors think about the nuclear/hazardous waste?.......1999-08-09

The DOE plans to build a nuclear/hazardous waste incinerator directly upwind of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. What do the authors think about this recent development?
