5 out of 5 stars A great artist with a tremendous appetite for pleasure in life .......2007-02-25

Rubinstein's memoir is the continuation of his first earlier work which dealt with his childhood and early adult years. This work covers the year 1917 to 1980. It opens with an account of his South American tour, then goes on to tell of his brief time in New York. It then gives much space to his years in Paris in the 1920's and 1930's. It goes on to tell of his meeting his future wife Nela, their feeling the Gestapo in France and settling in Hollywood. As in Paris Rubinstein rapidly establishes himself as desired social figure and mingles with the social elite.
This work is filled with countless amusing incidents and anecdotes.
Rubinstein seemed to know everybody and be able to charm them easily.
He is a person who seemed to know how to grasp the pleasures of life and live them most intensely.
The book is filled with accounts of his numerous romantic adventures. He apparently was a virtuoso in this field also.
While it is possible to admire him for this love of life, and ability to bring pleasure to others it is also possible to question his sense of morality and responsibility. Apparently he went long periods of time without connecting with his family. He did not seem to turn away from a potential conquest even if she were already married. I may sound old - fashioned but it seems to me that his own egoistic pleasure is at the center of this story.
However this does not mean that he is without morality. He shows in more than one instance great personal loyalty to friends. He went out of his way to help the fading Nijinsky and his account of that great dancer's final performance is a truly sad one.
Rubinstein's Memoir also teaches a great deal about the difficulties and vagaries of the life of creative people, no matter how talented. One of his great loves was the Italian contralto Gabriella Bensanzoni . His account of how her New York career was ruined by scheming rivals is a cautionary one for any aspiring artist.
Rubinstein meets so many people, has so many adventures it is hard to keep up with him. But through it all he does show a real understanding of others. His descriptions of people are very appealing, especially of those women he has romantic involvements with.
Above all of course Rubinstein is a great master pianist. And he has much to say about the way an artist must use the gift which he has been given.
This is a rich work and one most highly recommended.

Product Description

On a night alive with the lights of the Aurora Australis, a distant and abandoned weather station holds the only hope for a young emperor penguin who lies close to death on the most remote ice sheet in Antartica. His name is Pengey Penguin. Even though he was abandoned under the most unusual circumstances, he grew to be an adventurous spirit, undaunted by his troubles and driven by unwavering devotion to his principles and the love of Wendy, the human who saved him from certain death by starvation. Now it should be thoroughly understood that Pengey is not very tall and he is certainly not very strong, but he is very quick, extremely smart, exceedingly polite and very well mannered. This is his story, or at least how it all began. He already likes you, and it's his greatest wish that you'll like him, all his friends, and his bedtime story, too.

Bought a copy for my granddaughter who had it read to her several times and enjoyed it so much she has since donated the book to her school library. I will replace hers with my copy since she is still a firstgrader!

5 out of 5 stars I LOVED this book! What a great story to read to my nephew!!.......2007-03-14

So I just moved and my new roommate had this book sitting on the coffee table. Given that we're both single and in our 30's I had to ask what was up with the kid's book (hoping that I wasn't inadvertently offending him if it was the reading level he was at ;)) and he said the author was a friend of his and that it was a really cute book.

So, knowing nothing more than that I picked it up to read w/my Sunday coffee and couldn't put it down! What a delightful book -- even for the adult who will read it to a child (which makes all the difference when it comes to story time for exhausted parents at the end of a long day). This book belongs in the same category as the childhood classics like Beatrix Potter books, the Chronicles of Narnia, The Velveteen Rabbit, Madeline and Alice In Wonderland.

What a treasure! I can't wait to read it to my 18 month old nephew!! I really really hope there are sequels full of more fun Pengey adventures coming soon!

5 out of 5 stars Adventure & Survival.......2007-02-03

After watching March of the Penguins I became fascinated with all things Penguin, especially the lovable baby emperor penguins. John Burns' book is delightful in this regard as it introduces us to a baby penguin who faces the challenge of survival in the Antartica and in places like an airport.

Pengey Penguin is quite the little character and spends some time swimming in the airport aquarium, escaping from a hungry seal and surviving being sold to a mad scientist who lives in an ominous castle on the outskirts of the city.

The mood is almost like a cartoon with Pengey, the other animals and the evil characters being the cartoon and loving humans being real. The book reads like a movie and for that reason it will appeal to adults and children. The only scene that may cause some concern for children under 5 -7 is the one with the mad scientist, but Pengey escapes unharmed.

Pengey displays bravery, survival skills, friendship, strength in adversity, creative thinking, loyalty, tenacity, kindness, love and a desire to meet goals. The book itself has a beautiful durable sapphire blue cloth binding with gold letters. The arrangement of the text allows for the book to be read more easily and the author cleverly weaves in details about real penguins. This book is the first in a trilogy with additional stories set for release in 2007 and 2009. It will be fun to follow the adventures of this adorable penguin. The pictures throughout really give this book a cute personality.

5 out of 5 stars A charming tale, sure to capture the reader's hearts from the very first page........2006-11-06

"The Many Adventures of Pengey Penguin" is a delightfully entertaining novel for readers age 5 to 95. Pengey is an inquisitive, orphaned young emperor penguin, who is rescued from the brink of death near an abandoned weather station. Courage, curiosity, and plucky determination all power his penguin heart, and he speaks his mind openly; soon, all his talents will be tested to the utmost for the sake of not only himself, but also his animal and human friends. A charming tale, sure to capture the reader's hearts from the very first page.

5 out of 5 stars Pengey's Adventures.......2006-10-17

I just finished reading "The Many Adventures of Pengey Penguin". The thing I liked best about this book was the relationship between the three main characters. They were each different types of birds that had to learn to work together to survive on their trip. They helped each other out of dangerous areas and had fun along the way. I think most people would enjoy this book.

                  Book Description

The world history book to define all others, National Geographic Visual History of the World is a classic in the making. No other volume offers such a comprehensive and richly illustrated chronicle of world events, from the construction of the Pyramids to the overthrow of the Taliban. Readers see how momentous happenings, personalities, catastrophes, discoveries, and inventions unfold in a visually stimulating layout. Four eight-page gatefolds bring to life major events of world history and thousands of paintings, photographs and illustrations depict subjects ranging from the Roman Empire to the Reformation, World War II, to the war in Afghanistan. A timeline at the bottom of every page highlights the most important events, names, and dates of the era, and color-coded cross-referencing helps point readers to other applicable sections. Ideal for people who prefer to flip through books at random, this highly accessible resource contains sidebars on the great religions, influential ideologies, and other topics, as well as biographies of world leaders and notable personalities in the arts and humanities.

National Geographic Visual History of the World is an indispensable, impressive, and extravagantly illustrated reference of social, cultural, and military history in one volume. It is a must-have for all families, armchair historians, and serious scholars alike.

                  Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Too simplistic .......2007-10-01

I wish I could agree with most of the other reviewers but I did not find this to be a remarkable work. I instead found it simplistic, often insultingly so. Its coverage, for instance of the 'Second World War' is absolutely disgraceful. It is almost as if Churchill were just another ordinary politico, who happened to be leader of Great Britain at the time. Nowhere is there any indication of the great role he played in turning the tide towards Allied Victory.
Simplicity reigns everywhere. And it is of course possible to say that this is only for high- schoolers, only meant to provide material at a certain level. But by being so simplistic one does not really provide even a basis in understanding.
I remember the History Text Books used in American schools five decades ago. They were more detailed and my guess is as well or better written than what we have here.
I do not like to down books especially ones which are aimed to being educational tools, and better informing the general public.
But I just believe that the coverage given here to the subjects I know something about, and examined is really not adequate.

                  5 out of 5 stars Superb.......2007-06-07

aspiring writers take note: this is how all books should be formatted... 50% pictures, 50% words.

I especially liked the story of Napoleon who was, in my honest opinion, an even better leader than George W Bush.

Unfortunately, there was no mention of Nathan Rothschild - which I found staggering - but that is not a good enough reason to deduct a star.

                  Verdict:

                  Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars History in focus at the corner of your eye........2007-01-21

There is simply too much of world history to know. But this fantastic book makes it all visual by proper focussing, page by page, time after time and through topic after topic, scientifically organized. In this age of over-information through cyberspace, it is difficult to wade through all of it to get to the truth. Here is an authoritative book, with lots and lots of pictures, overviews and short biographies, that does not miss anything of significance, and tells you the truth in such a way that you have no heart to lay the book down. You have only to think of any subject -- be it Industrial Revolution, European Trading Companies, Early China, Wars of ideology and Extermination or anything connected with history -- you will find a whole page devoted to that topic with all the related stories. Well, this book is a must for every home-library.

4 out of 5 stars brilliant reference work.......2007-01-16

As both a captivating page-turner, and a thorough reference work, this book is quite valuable. It attempts the most coherent narrative of human history possible, casting events and processes into their context, offering a sort of comparative history of simultaneous events, and seeking to provide clear summaries of every major event that composes the master narrative of human knowledge. Both in brevity and in quality, this is a fine work of history for the layperson.

4 out of 5 stars informatie and pleasing to read.......2006-10-18

This was an in-depth look at our world history and written in an easy fashion.

The pictures were well rendered and I loved the stuff written on the early cultures (the byzantine empire, etc).

However, I was a little disappointed on the all-too brief pages written on Asian history. Asia has over 12,000 years of history combined (if you include India, Japan, China, Korea and the Islamic worlds etc). and the authors/editors decide to skim it with only 15 pages or so?
That's not quite a complete view of the world, if you ask me....
There's plenty of focus on the European eras (all of them) and not enough on the Asian ones.

Still an excellent read though; and for any student of history (or needing a paper done in minutes) this is definitely the book to use!

I'm about a third of the way through this book and I've found numerous errors. It will sometimes say B.C. when A.D. is clearly meant also it tends to confuse the word century with millenium. Alexander the Great did not kill Darius nor did Mohammed flee from Mecca to Hejira nor did the arabs conquer the western roman empire. Plus it contains the bizarre statement that the Byzantines "conquered" the eastern roman empire. Pretty pictures though.

5 out of 5 stars Visual History of the World by the National Geographic.......2007-05-28

This is an excellent pictorial rendition of world geography and historic
sites of considerable importance to many nation states. For instance,
the Biblos in Beirut is shown, as well as the Hindu gods of Shiva.
The rule of Herod is depicted together with the Etruscans. The first
empire of the Qin Dynasty is shown in full color. The Berbers, Libyans,
Numidians and Ethiopians are depicted as the first kingdoms of Africa.
The rediscovery of the Machu Picchu is depicted from the 15th century.

This is an important acquisition for anyone interested in world culture,
geography and history. It is reasonably priced for the thrifty at heart.

3 out of 5 stars Black and white text books can cure insomnia.......2000-03-14

I had this book for a US - East Asian affairs class at my local community college. It was a decent text book and contains tons of information about Asian history and the emergence of Asian nations as strongpoints in the Pacific.

Each page of the book is separated into two columns which means that you have to read each page twice. Also, the whole book including all the pictures is in black and white. When reading about the extensive Chinese dynasties, these combined factors can make the casual reader very drowsy.

                    Book Description

The Asia-Pacific region is rapidly emerging as the global economic and political powerhouse of the twenty-first century. Looking at both Southeast and East Asia, this richly illustrated volume stresses broad, cross-cutting themes of regional history, with an emphasis on the interactions between cultures and nations. In this updated third edition, Mark Borthwick provides a significantly revised introduction which places the contemporary rise of China within the context of the political, cultural and economic evolution of the region since ancient times. He then considers more recent developments in their historical context, balancing national and international factors underlying Asia-Pacific economic growth and political change. New areas receiving attention in the third edition include Japan's recovery from economic stagnation, Japan's new political landscape, China's economic transformation and leadership in East Asian regionalism, the North Korean crisis, and the Asia-Pacific impact on the global economic system. The book also provides chronological updates for Cambodia, Vietnam, and Indonesia. Borthwick concludes with an examination of the key domestic and international issues facing the nations of Pacific Asia and the growing influence of these nations on North America and the world economy.

                        Book Description

The last decade has seen a dramatic increase in the attention paid by social scientists to environmental issues, and a gradual acknowledgement in the wider community, of the role of social science in the public debate on sustainability. At the same time, the concept of "culture", once the property of anthropologists, has gained wide currency among social scientists. The book shows how an understanding of culture can throw light on the way environmental issues are perceived and interpreted, both by local communities and within the contemporary global arena.

Taking an anthropological approach, the book examines the relationship between human culture and human ecology, and considers how a cultural approach to the study of environmental issues differs from other established approaches in social science. This book adds significantly to our understanding of environmentalism as a contemporary phenomenon, by demonstrating the distinctive contribution of social and cultural anthropology to the environmental debate.
