*ANOTHER "DAY OF TEARS" : January 31, 2006*.......2006-02-02
Greatness in women! How is it achieved, and how acknowledged, when one is married to a significant public figure?
CORETTA SCOTT KING died yesterday, and her partnership marriage with Martin Luther King, Jr. is described in this auto-biography that is more his story, yet they were "privileged to share" each other's lives. She was a true helpmate, 'cheerleader' and support whose personality and musical talent provided needed harmony in his daily life. Coretta King was soft-spoken, with beauty and timbre in her speaking voice. She did not lack backbone; it was through her background as a descendant of slaves that lessons of courage were passed down (Read "SHOW WAY" - - Newbery Honor Book, 2006, that tells of similar circumstances.)
After a rural Alabama upbringing, Coretta Scott became a 1949 graduate of Antioch (OH) College. She went on to graduate from the New England Conservatory of Music in 1951, but changed course from career to marriage, though it was said she never expected to marry a man who would march, go to jail for civil rights, and change America forever. (A picture taken of Coretta with classmates at Antioch is "so forties" - - similar pictures taken at other northern schools might not have included black students. The pictures are of great interest, including a lovely photograph of the family saying a 'blessing' at mealtime; others are sharp reminders of incidents in our national life not altogether healed.) The original 1969 edition was later changed, mostly in language, to be more 'politically correct' as people like to say nowadays. The index takes note of a press conference Mrs. King shared in Washington D.C. with my aunt, Dorothy Hewitt Hutchinson, to protest the war in Vietnam. This was a very few days before Martin Luther King was gunned down. Have we progressed at all during the intervening years?
Coretta King was widowed at age 40, left to deal with the trauma of her husband's death, to 'explain' it to their four small children. She drew on a wellspring of courage and faith. We may wonder sometimes if there will be women in the future who grow up that strong. She writes as an historian, yet also as a fully involved wife. There was little that was 'everyday-ish' about their life; the knowledge of hatred and injustice could not be kept from the children altogether. Life was admittedly tumultuous; people did & said ugly things.
The chapters telling about the time following Dr. King's death are filled with expressions of gratitude for those who immediately offered & gave help, and those who came to hold her in their arms and in their prayers. Life has not been easy for the family members, as so often happens with children of the famous, and they need our prayers now. Coretta Scott King deserves every accolade; mcHAIKU says "Amen" to a life well lived.
Mrs. King Is A Strong, Dignified Woman.......2005-09-09
The behind-the-scenes story of the other side in Dr. King's life. His widow, Coretta Scott King, writes an earnest memoir of her own life and what it was like to try to maintain some shade of normality for her family in the turmoil of the Civil Rights movement. There is too much honesty here for the hero worship of the late Dr. King many might expect. After reading this book I came away feeling Mrs. King deserves praise for her own role in her peoples' struggle and her husband's achievements. Coretta Scott King, like so many women behind noteworthy men, should receive more than the footnote status those in such roles too often find is their legacy.
Martin luther King jr. Book response.......2003-03-11
This review is about the book My life with Martin Luther King Jr. By Coretta Scott King. This book touched me because my grandpa used to know Dr.King and this book tells me all the stuff my grandpa never told me. Like when Martin protested to all the whites, the Ku Klux Klan, or [KKK] told Dr.King to stop protesting or he would never see his family again, but Martin was not afraid, and with that the KKK bombed his house as a warning, luckally no one was hurt. The "I have a dream speech". Won Dr.King the noble peace prize, That angered the KKK and in his hotel The KKK guned him down in front of his family, and after the funeral the Mayor made it a law to treat blacks equally. Martin Luther King had one but had lost his life in the process.
I reccomend this book to all people [Blacks & Whites alike] that had a goal in life and did not stop until they achevied it.
Coretta King writes an epic of the life of her husband.......2002-12-22
I read this book for my Modern American History class and aside from two uses of "G__ d___," which I feel Mrs. King used to show the historical accuracy of the persecution during one of Martin's marches, that this was an informative read. I don't know that much about black history, but Mrs. King seems to go in depth while being completely concise. Famous historical figures such as Malcolm X and Ralph Abernathy are littered throughout and we have what I believe is probably an accurate view of the mores and values of the times. The book inspired me to stand up for my beliefs at the expense of persecution. In this book, we have a more human picture of Martin, the love he shared for people and his determination to lead them out of the valley of despair. As I approached the end of the book, I couldn't put it down because I was completely riveted at the events that ensued after his assassination. I've not read any other books about this period, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was the authorative work on the history of black civil rights during that time period.
A Wonderful Book by Far!!!!!!.......2002-04-24
I thought the book was wonderful!!! It gave me insight to what life was like living with MLK Jr. You felt the pain when things went wrong. You felt the happiness when things went right. Coretta Scott King did a great job of letting everyone know the imtimate details of her and her husbands life. If you haven't read it , check it out. Trust me, as a teen, it was a book that grasped my interest. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!!!!!

thorough.......2006-02-22
Instead of reading through alot of Old English interpretation and opinion, the facts here are presented straightforward, clear and easy to read for the average reader. The pictures help immensely as they transports you to the era. Still, the book is thorough and stuffed with facts, historical, personal and cultural. A great buy for anyone interested in this period.
A SUCCINCT SUMMARY OF JOSEPHUS.......2004-12-29
For most people, such as myself, reading all of Josephus' Antiquities and The Jewish War is a daunting and time-consuming task. This book does a wonderful job of summarizing both of these important works in under 400 pages. It's easy reading and the footnotes and timelines added by Mr. Maier are helpful. If you want to learn about ancient Hebrews and Israelites as well as the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans(which Josephus witnessed)then this is your book without reading the complete and voluminous works of Josephus then here's your book.
I should note that the majority of Antiquities paraphrases what is already found in the Old Testament, which is common knowledge to scholars in this subject.
it looked a lot less intimidating than the others.......2000-05-19
This was the first book on Josephus that I have read. The reason I selected this edition over other full length, unabridged versions is that it looked a lot less intimidating (I get shivers down my spine when I think that I am going to have to read through an encyclopedia length tome from cover to cover). My hunch was rewarded with a well organized version that is very easy to read and understand. It covers the essentials of "Jewish Antiquities" and "The Jewish War" in a way that allows you to read through it fairly quickly without having to ponder very long what you have read. The only difficulty I encountered was to keep straight in my mind the family relationships of the nobility in "The Jewish War". Although it is still a fairly long read, I recommend it to anyone who is just starting their studies on Josephus.

A poor attempt at unfounded conjecture.......2007-06-01
It seems that none of the articles have any substance in undermining the topics they attack. For example, Uri Geller, who has proved his ESP in labs worldwide, is simply poo-pooed without contradicting scientific example. This is hardly skepticism; it is simply automatic gainsay. I'm sorry but this book was a real disappointment. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY BY BUYING IT.
"Long on Opinion, Short on Science.".......2007-05-17
Carroll's book is an encyclopedic rant. He spends half
of his section on out of body experience detailing the
history of one heavy drug user, and spends no time
discussing the phenomenon in history or religion.
He completely discounts situation where individuals
have appeared to other conscious individuals and
shared that information afterward.
When he discusses testimonial evidence, he dismisses
it all as "anecdotal,""inherently subjective, inaccurate,
unreliable and biased. Imagine all the lonely scientists
and discoverers that he would have dismissed out of hand.
If it happened that only 20% of the population could
dream and Mr. Carroll were among the other 80%, he would
discount the "dream-able" population as being either
liars, drug addicts, or delusional mental cases.
I sense that if one were to me this gentleman at a party,
one would recognise him by his inability to ever admit
that he could be wrong.
He's also a teacher in California. I'd love to poll his
students. Is this the kind of teacher who will give a
student who agrees with him an "A," and a student who
disagrees with him, even though he or she has made and
equally powerful argument a "C - ?" What do you think?
Don't waste the money on this book. That you can take to the bank!
ebmer.......2007-03-31
A must for anyone involved in discussing issues with people who believe this sort of pseudoscientific stuff. I didn't know what most of these things were or that they were actually still believed by anyone. Perhaps the U.K is more skeptical. There is room for updating and some
additions by now but it is a good starting place. I love it and have given copies to friends.
A facinating book!.......2007-01-19
I had a great time just browsing through this book and reading the various entries. Several of the entries were familiar to me from other books, but this dictionary added aditional information. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in the unsual.
DO WE ALREADY KNOW EVERYTHING THERE IS TO KNOW?.......2007-01-19
It is healthy to be skeptical, but how foolish is it to believe one already have all the answers? Mr. Carroll apparently believes he does. But it was precisely "know it all" people like the author who killed Socrates and ridiculed Galileo's discoveries in order to preserve their erroneous but comfortable world view.
There is much we don't understand and can't measure with our so called "advanced" technology of today. How can we be certain that nothing else exists beyond the limits of our present experience and that a different reality remains obscured by our widely accepted beliefs?
Let's take for example Quantum mechanics which is one of the pillars of modern physics. It explains accurately how the sun shines, how molecules bond together, how iron is magnetized, and even why objects are hard. It is responsible for our computer chips, the electron microscope, lasers, and magnetic resonance imaging. But quantum mechanics also explains how the position or locality of sub-atomic particles is affected by the expectations of the observer. Does this suggest that mind can affect matter? Absolutely. But the author will tell you anyone who believes in mind over matter is delusional.
Many scientists dismiss the possibility of the "supernatural" or of the spirit and even ridicule others who believe in it or consider it possible. However, one recent scientific idea proposes that quantum mechanical waves and fields may be the spiritual portion of the universe and that science may be studying spirit without knowing it.
Consider the work of 1973 Nobel Prize physicist Brian Josephson, best known for his pioneering theoretical work on superconductivity. Josephson points out that there is now strong evidence for the existence of parapsychological phenomena, based on a number of trials designed to investigate telepathy (communication between minds using means beyond those of the known senses) which have produced convincing results.
There is much we need to discover about this universe. What some lambaste today as pseudo-science and delusional beliefs could very well be proven to be true tomorrow. So instead of succumbing to the "herd" mentality, it will serve us better to keep an open mind, and look into the evidence while using our power of discernment. There could be much truth we might be dismissing in some of those "Strange Beliefs, Amusing Deceptions, and Dangerous Delusions" waiting to be understood.
