Book Description
A VIBRANT, MEDITATIVE MALK IN SEARCH OF THE SOUL OF JAPAN
Traveling by foot through mountains and villages, Alan Booth found a Japan far removed from the stereotypes familiar to Westerners. Whether retracing the footsteps of ancient warriors or detailing the encroachments of suburban sprawl, he unerringly finds the telling detail, the unexpected
transformation, the everyday drama that brings this remote world to life on the page. Looking for the Lost is full of personalities, from friendly gangsters to mischievous children to the author himself, an expatriate who found in Japan both his true home and dogged exile. Wry, witty, sometimes
angry, always eloquent, Booth is a uniquely perceptive guide.
Looking for the Lost is a technicolor journey into the heart of a nation. Perhaps even more significant, it is the self-portrait of one man, Alan Booth, exquisitely painted in the twilight of his own life.

One of the best.......2006-06-19
I have read many books on Japan, and I hope to share some thoughts on of all of them in time. But this is one of the few that moved me. Having lived in Japan for two years, I read this book during my last six months on the JET Program and even managed to complete one of the journeys that Booth himself travelled - as I was reading this book. I often found myself laughing out loud or shedding a tear in secret. For those that have not spent some serious time in Japan, much will be lost. It is better for those living there or who have lived there. Alan's insights cannot be perceived easily or quickly from the typical ten day vacation. In following his foot steps, I felt as if I was walking with his ghost. This book, as others have stated, is very bitter-sweet. I too, wish that Alan were still alive today, for I would very much would have enjoyed drinking with him.
Highly Recommended
Journey to Japan with Alan!.......2005-08-23
Booth is a master at bringing words to life. You can't help but feeling like you are right there with him as he travels through Japan. Seeing, smelling, hearing, tasting, feeling what he experiences. In "Looking for the Lost," Booth reveals the subtleties of the Japanese people, their culture, and their land that at once demystifies Western stereotypes of Japan and envelopes the country in a totally different kind of mystery. I found nuggets reminiscent of my own visit to Japan. A delight to read!
A Look at Japan, a Look at Alan Booth.......2005-07-21
Looking for the Lost chronicles three independent walking trips the author made through the Japanese countryside, each inspired by a famous historical journey. The first trip retraces novelist Osamu Dazai's journey through his childhood homeland in his autobiographical work, "Tsugaru." The second trip recounts Alan Booth's efforts to follow the trail of the celebrated rebel general Saigo Takamori as he struggled to escape the Emperor's armies at the end of the failed Satsuma Rebellion of 1877. The third trip is of Booth's own devising, a walk from Nagoya to Taira through Gifu province, along one of many paths that legend claims the remnants of the imperial Heike clan followed after their defeat by the Genji clan in the 12th century.
Booth was a British expatriate writer who moved to Japan to study Noh drama, became disillusioned with it, and ended up a permanent resident of Japan despite that. Looking for the Lost's central theme is the dissonance Booth experiences in his journeys when he attempts to reconcile the Japan of his dreams with the nation he travels through. His portrayals of the people he encounters are sometimes cynical, often humorous, and always insightful. When Japan fails to live up to his expectations, he does not hesitate to poke fun, and the reader is often left with the sense that he feels personally let down by the nation. But allegations that Booth did not like the Japanese ignore that he is as quick to turn his pen on himself as on a passerby. Several particularly memorable segments of the book focus on Booth embarrassing himself! Moreover, Booth balances his cynicism with sympathy: when the author meets a person or place that contains the pieces of Japan he seeks, or a human being he can relate to, his heartfelt joy shines through in his writing. It is in these moments that Alan Booth reveals the most about Japan, and about himself.
The book begins with the "Tsugaru" section. Despite Booth's affection for the region he is traveling through, he never really warms up to the subject matter. He represents the novelist Dazai as an unlikeable fellow, and characterizes the region's connections to Dazai as touristy and lacking authenticity. While the descriptions and people are interesting, the reader is left wondering why Booth felt it necessary to reenact the journey of someone he spends so much time sneering at. The second and third sections of the book are much stronger. "Saigo's Last March" interweaves Booth's thorough knowledge of the general's history with a journey that sometimes daunts even the veteran walker. Here, and in the final section, "Looking for the Lost," Booth finds more signs of the Japan of his dreams.
This was Alan Booth's last book, published posthumously in 1994, the year after his death.
Entertaining, informative, poignant........2005-05-11
Alan Booth followed in the steps (pun intended) of numerous previous travel writers, and was better than most. He had a ready wit and an excellent sense of humor, and bore the hardships of his chosen method of travel well. He also liked to drink, an asset when traveling on foot in Japan.
He describes three different walks, each with a distinctive theme. The first follows the trail of Japanese novelist Osamu Dazai's 1944 tour of his home region, Tsugaru, in Northern Honshu. The second follows the path of General Takamori Saigo's retreat from the Battle of Enodake, in Kyushu, which ended the Satsuma rebellion in 1877. The third follows the possible track over central Honshu of the remnents of the Heike clan after their defeat at the Battle of Dannoura in 1186.
Along the way, between descriptions of his blisters and complaints about the weather, he weaves bits of history in with reflections on literature and drama, Japanese society, his own life, and the merits of various alcoholic beverages. He enjoys the Japanese, but doesn't necessarily like them, pokes fun at them constantly. Not that the Japanese, like any other nationality, don't deserve having fun poked at them. But one sometimes wonders why Booth spent so many years living in a country and learning the language of a people for whom he seems to have had so little respect. He acknowledges this indirectly even in the title of the book, "Looking for the Lost", which implies that he is looking for a Japan that may never have existed.
His comments on the Noh are interesting, but perplexing. He was a trained actor, went to Japan to learn about the Noh, and became disillusioned with it very quickly. From the little I have read and seen of Noh drama, it is based on quite different assumptions from European, especially Shakespearean, drama. It was "pickled" from the very beginning, an esoteric art form invented for the nobility, nothing "popular" or "alive" about it. Booth seems to have taken that difference personally, as if the Japanese had played a trick on him, rather than seeing the Noh for the quite unusual dramatic form that it is.
His announcement at the end of the book that he has colon cancer is terse and matter of fact, in some ways like Dazai's attitude toward suicide. One thinks of him writing this book with death looking over his shoulder, which perhaps explains the bittersweet feeling one gets while reading it.
Related works:
Basho - "The Narrow Road to the Deep North"
Isabella Bird - "Unbeatan Tracks in Japan"
Ezra Pound and Ernest Fenellosa - "The Classic Noh Theatre of
Japan"
Mishima Yukio - "Five Modern Noh Plays"
These are not nearly as much fun to read as Alan Booth.
Highly recommended.
Journey through Japan.......2003-03-29
I wish I could write as entertainingly as Alan Booth. This book will not disappoint you, especially if you like traveling and are fascinated with Japan. And if not, it's still a great read anyway.
The most brilliant thing about this book is that the author combines Japanese history into his narratives as he traces three historical figures and/or locations in Japan by foot. The way he makes the characteres he meets along the way of his journey come to life is outstanding. I really enjoy this book and wish that he had written others before he died. The only thing that bothered me somewhat and makes me feel unsympathetic towards him, however, is that he drank too much. But who am I to judge? This is a great book. Highly recommended.
Book Description
THE SWORDSMANS' COMPANION is a superb introduction to a modern system of self-defense based on the Italian medieval masters Fiore dei Liberi and Filippo Vadi.
Intended for the beginner, the book approaches the art of swordsmanship from the perspective of a martial art, building the student's confidence through many drills, exercises, and explanations.
Guy Windsor, founder and director of The School For European Swordsmanship, Helsinki, brings his extensive experience to bear in creating was is surely the first modern treatise based on the medieval Italian treatises. The swordsmanship he offers is elegant and flashy, but it is also rooted in firm basics that include unarmoured wrestling techniques and throws.
Customer Reviews:
Well Written.......2007-07-29
The broadsword in s good place to start for anyone interested in learning Historic Swordsmanship. This book is well written for those who want to learn the basics. I personally found many new drills and new ways to teach my students.
Personally I have been in the martial arts for over 20 years and have been doing Western Martial Arts for about 8 and I really liked this book. It is always good to return to the basics and make sure they are solid.
I would recomend this book to anyone who is starting or thinking about getting into Historic Swordsmanship, also and well equiped sword library should have this book.
Most illuminating.......2007-03-11
Although I read this a few years ago, it remains for me the best book on the subject of swordplay that I've ever picked up. Although I may disagree with some of his interpretations (and that may simply be the result of his models handling blades too long to accurately demonstrate some of Fiore's guards), his decriptions of the fundamental principles of swordfighting are both elegant and insightful. This book was a pivotal experience in the evolution of my understanding of medieval swordplay.
Finalmente ............2006-11-14
When I saw this book advertised on Amazon, I said to myself...oh no!!! not another one of those books written by these whackos who think they can swordfight, just because they played with metal bars in their backyard !!!! Then as I looked through it I said .....Finalmente ....Finally....a well researched book written by an intelligent man who has studied the period manuals and presented his theory on the subject!! What is great about Guy Windsor is that even on his discussion forum he admits that he is learning everyday, and that he feels no shame in changing something that he might be wrong on. Great book written by a great author !!! If you want to learn to fight with the Longsword by this book !!!!!!
Excellent.......2005-03-29
As a long-time researcher and historical fencer, I can say that this is simply the best non-monographical book on the longsword out there. Guy Windsor is a first-rate teacher, and this comes across plainly in his writing and in the organization of this book.
The book provides enough historical material to demonstrate where the original concepts and techniques can be found, then expands into clearly-defined lessons from a teacher with considerable experience. Many of the common mistakes are identified and advice is given on how to avoid them or correct them. Actions are explained in terms of martial soundness and correct body-mechanics. Illustrations are numerous, clear and relevant.
Furthermore, Guy's writing style is dynamic and interesting, making the Companion a good read as well as a useful training tool.
A high-quality, informative and well-written book that I heartily recommend to all serious students of the late-Medieval sword-arts.
A great book for those who want to learn real swordsmanship.......2005-02-21
I just got my copy of this book, and I am suitably impressed. This book is mainly based on the Italian masters, notably Fiore di Liberi's work. And as such, the terms given here for the guards and cuts are in italian. Initially described in english as well, but italian after that. Now, this may be confusing for those who are beginners or non-italian speakers. More on this in a minute.
I like the fact that this book contains plenty of one and two person exercises to work through, illustrated with actual photos that are clear and easy to follow. This book also includes warm ups that should be done before practice begins, and some great exercises on body mechanics. You may wonder what being able to keep your balance on one foot has to do with swordsmanship, especially doing this with your eyes closed (Harder than it sounds!). Nothing, and yet, everything. Proper balance, footwork, and body mechanics are essential to good technique, and to avoiding injury. Many training books forget this. This one makes you think about it.
For those needing ideas for a training regimen, there are several sample class/training session outlines provided that can be borrowed or modified to suit the practicioner's needs. There's also some interesting stuff here that some of the other swordsmanship books don't get into, such as offensive use of the sword's pommel and handguard at close range, and some basic throws and grapples.
Now, about that italian language thing- It can be a bit confusing to be reading through the training exercises, and not knowing the italian terminology offhand. And constantly flipping back to the section where it's explained can be awkward. What I've found helps for those who are new to this form of swordsmanship, is to write a little cheat sheet with the italian names for the various guards and cuts, and their english translations, and keep this with the book. When you're reading the instructions, it's easier to refer to your little sheet of notes than to lose the flow of the exercise by flipping back and forth. And this little trick will help you to learn the historical italian terminology too. It's only been a few days, and it's working for me. As with anything, your milage may vary.
Overall, I highly reccomend this book to anyone looking to learn medieval swordsmanship, or to seperate real medieval fighting from hollywood fantasy.

Waste of Money.......2007-01-13
The title says it all. I got very little out of the book, certainly not worth the time to read or what I paid.
Great starting source of info........2003-12-19
A good friend owns a cabing in the mountains, but not enough land and too close to the river for a septic leach field. Her holding tank was costing her dearly to empty. I bought this book, and helped her install a grey water leach field that has worked great and saved her TONS of money each year!!! While she used to pump her 1000 gal holding tank every couple months at a cost of $500-600, she now pumps about once a year! No more pumping shower and sink water with the sewage!!!!
The info on testing soil porosity was a great help!
While the book is not a complete resource, it is close to it, and will definately get you started (I knew zip about grey-water systems when I bought it).
A couple suggestions I would add:
I used inverted, old 5-gallon buckets for "leach pots". They are dirt cheap (free, actually - just ask around and keep your eyes open) compared to purchased plastic pots, and have way more capacity.
To prevent possible smell from returning via the main line, I installed a trap and vented the above pots with much smaller sprinkler hose, which I returned to the house (in the same ditch) before venting to atmosphere.
Overall, I highly recommend this book.
If you live in the desert states, do this!.......2003-05-01
Excellent, real-world book on how to water a bunch of plants by recycling your own used water. I built this into my own home, and it works wonderfully well. We use only a few gallons of fresh water every month for watering, and we own an acre, much of which is planted in trees and shrubs! This trick works, and the book should be required reading for anyone living in the desert. It is literally all you need to set up a good, working grey water system for no more money than a typical wasteful system costs.
Get this book!.......2002-12-03
Not only should you get this book: you should get your neighbors to get a copy too. Actually, I recommend that you also get the 2 companion books to "Create an Oasis": "Branched Drain Greywater Systems" and "Builder's Greywater Guide".
Art Ludwig obviously has both extensive knowledge of and experience with greywater systems. The substance of these volumes far surpasses anything that I've seen available in books or on the Internet. In fact, his presentation of greywater processing has made me reconsider the blackwater treatment system that I'm planning for a new house. I expect to save money that I would have spent on a post-treatment, aerobic unit that would seemingly have been ecologically responsible; but because of the technological overkill, ultimately that system would have defeated my altruistic environmental concerns.
At first, I was surprised at the short length of each of these books: about 50 pages each; but the sheer volume of information in each one puts other sources to shame. Each volume is very well written, being clear, amusing, and concise. I can't imagine improving these books, other than keeping the information updated with future editions.
I do hope that Art Ludwig writes at least one more book on the subject of greywater: one that is a direct argument to present to government regulators. Don't get me wrong; all of the information for addressing the concerns of regulators is contained in these books. I just don't believe that most regulators would take the time to sit down and examine the data and issues that Ludwig raises, so I'd love to see a book dedicated to the professional regulators. Then I'd buy a few copies to submit to them.
Greywater fights drought........2000-11-01
We came to most of Art's conclusions the hard way. If we had read his book four years ago we would have been spared several embarrassing moments. Like the day the empty surge tank popped up out of the ground after a heavy rain and cleaning the bilge pump so often before discovering the "panty hose filter system". These are issues that most authors don't care to become famous for writing about, but when you save your shallow well from the drought and discover the joy of having used your water twice, you come to believe that Art Ludwig deserves a special blessing for all of his hard work. A must read for everyone working to become independent from the ways of this present destructive world...In appreciation, ........ElectricSunDog

Technical Resourcefulness.......2007-01-09
I find this book giving good examples and guidelines for design of cleanroom for various types of facilities. Very comprehensive. However would like to have typical design method or calculation for designing the various requirements or selection for the cleanroom itself e.g. how to maintain or design for the pressure differential between 2 types of rooms or areas and the sizing for the various plant support system or facilities
