5 out of 5 stars WONDERFULl!!.......2005-12-20

I absolutely love this book. Whoever wrote that you can here Estelle's voice as you read it, you are REALLY correct. This book is extremely funny, and tells the truth. I wish she could have talked about her time in Torch Song Trilogy a little more though. However, my book is battered as well I have read this book SO many times!

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE this book...........2005-09-26

I always tought that only the character Sophia was funny, but this book proves that Estelle is just as hilarious....

5 out of 5 stars Golden.......2004-12-18

If you're an avid fan of the Golden Girls, and by that I mean, know when it airs on Lifetime and are able to recite dialogue from the show, then this book is for you. It captures the essence of Estelle Getty, and what we loved about her fiesty character, Sophia. It's an easy read of observations, anecdotes. I've read this many a time...my copy's all battered, but every now and then, when I'm feeling sentimental or a little blue, I pick up this book and find myself feeling a whole lot better. It's comfortable and familiar.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Estelle!.......2003-11-20

While reading this book you could hear Estelle Gettys voice while she's cracking jokes throughout. Thoroughly entertaining!

5 out of 5 stars Estelle Getty is so great........2003-01-30

This book was fantabulous. Anything Estelle Getty does is automatically a classic.

For more than a decade, advertising executive Richard Edler collected pithy bits of wisdom about business and life from leaders in a variety of fields. If I Knew Then What I Know Now: CEOs and Other Smart Executives Share Wisdom They Wish They'd Been Told 25 Years Ago presents the resultant advice and support in a series of easily digestible nuggets from notables like Senator Orrin Hatch, Rabbi Harold Kushner, Peter Ueberroth and a host of lesser-known authorities.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I read jastraub's review....get a life........2004-04-28

My father and Mr. Edler were friends for over 25 years. Unfortunately, Mr. Edler passed away recently. It was a loss.

I am writing this not just to set jastraub straight, as anyone who is capable of thinking rationally will see that jastraub's opinion is lacking of qualification. While it is possible he or she is very knowledgable about business there is no evidence of this in his or her comments.

I must admit I am biased regarding any of the books or projects that Mr. Edler was a part of. Not just because I knew him, but my father is one of the contributors to the book. I remember when I got a copy of the book before it was released. I was a 25-year-old police officer at the time. I have learned a great deal from "If" over the years. I keep one copy in my bedroom and a copy as a reader in my guest bathroom. While I cannot speak for Mr. Edler I believe that he wrote this book to help people in not only their career, but in life. If I am not mistaken all of his works were of a similar nature. I strongly recommend "Through the Valley", also by Mr. Edler. This is an excellent book for anyone, especially those involved in fields or situations where there is unexpected death (hospitals, law enforcement, etc.)

Thank you for reading my review. Take care.

2 out of 5 stars If I Knew Then What I Know Now, I Wouldn't Have Bought It.......2002-08-28

There are a great many good books that share insight from business leaders on how young want-to-be-executives can advance through the ranks, unfortunately this isn't one of them.

On the positive side, there are a number of excellent quotes within the book, ranging from a suggestion of managing time by opening mail at 4:30 PM and thus not loosing control of your day every time a so-called emergency occurs to encouraging everyone to take more risks. The quotes are arranged into sections by their relevance to a particular topic. These topics include "things you should know", "things you'll be better off knowing", "things you'll be nicer off knowing" and "things learned the hard way". Edler does an exceptional job explaining some of the more cryptic or just incredibly short quotes.

Unfortunately, filling the 200-or-so pages not containing valuable insight are repeated suggestions to spend more time with family and find religion. While these topics are obviously important to their contributors, one really has to wonder if these people would be where they are now, if they had taken their own advice. Moreover, while the suggestions are clearly valid, they really don't need to be repeated numerous times throughout the book; some editorial discursion should have been exercised.

The 242 page book will take most readers only about an hour to complete, as many pages contain only 25-50 words, in very large print (note that this is not designed to be a "big print" book as Edler's side-column notes are generally printed in a very small print). Moreover, many of these "CEOs and Other Smart Executives" are virtual unknowns, like many of the companies that they work for. There are some pleasant surprises buried within, but much is simply filler.

If you are looking for a waxing, philosophical guide to living what the contributors feel would have been a better life, for them, then this is the book for you. If on the other hand, you are looking for a book about how to advance through the ranks, and become the successor to one of these contributors, you would be better served elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars I guarantee, that you'll find at least one thing important.........2002-07-20

Reading the book I guarantee, that every single reader will find at least one idea, advice or thought useful or important... Many of these ideas are absolutely new, were not published in quotation books. (I worked for a publisher, and we published several quotation books... I know, what's "out there".)
And if you only find one important thought in this stunning collection, don't you think it was worth to read it?

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful insights for every day at your work!.......2001-11-02

Edler did a wonderful job gathering these quotes. They are very helpful. I read it one or two of its quotes every day. You should have it!

5 out of 5 stars Sci-fi + sex = a great novel.......2006-08-30

Definitely the most exciting and interesting sci-fi book I have read in years. A terrific work from a first-time author. If you love sci-fi and sex you will not be able to put it down. Through the vehicle of mind transference Carleton Heaviside allows you to explore sexual fantasies in explicit detail: old man in a young man's body, man in a woman's body, woman in a man's body, young woman in an old woman's body - all graphically described(this book is not for the faint-hearted or unsophisticated adult). A true joy from beginning to end. I can't wait for the sequel.

5 out of 5 stars This book should get 10 stars.......2006-04-14

This was by far the best written book I have ever read. This book makes the DaVinci Code look amateurish. I really loved this book. A truly amazing book written by a brilliant writer. I have read a ton of stuff and nothing is so detailed, precise and done with excellent skill. The technical parts are described in such a way that you understand and see it as if you are there. A real page turner that you absolutely cannot assume or guess what will happen next. You haven't read a great book until you have read this one.

Book Description

The public remembers one Amy Fisher: the sixteen-year-old "Long Island Lolita" who shot the wife of her lover. But for Amy herself, life hasn't stood still. A decade and a half later, she has grown into a reflective, confident, and happy 30-year-old woman, an award-winning newspaper columnist, and a devoted wife and mother.

Here, in this intensely personal book, she tells her story-clearing up the many misconceptions about who she was, what she did, and who she is now. Amy:

-Talks in detail about her childhood, her relationship with Joey Buttafuoco, the shooting, life in prison, parole, and how she has pieced her life back together again;
-Provides never-before-told details about her time in prison;
-Takes full responsibility for the impulsive, unthinkable crime of her youth;
-Serves as a source of inspiration, proving that rehabilitation and redemption are achievable;
-Delivers advice to parents and teens from her unique perspective-including warning signs and action plans-on how to keep out of danger and avoid potentially deadly choices.
-Shares her vision on gun control and minors and ending domestic violence and the abuse of women in prison

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-10-05

I really wanted to like this book. After reading it, all I feel is ripped off.

I actually thought there would be some introspection from Amy now that she's passed the 30-years-old mark, but in reading this I got the distinct impression that she still wants us to picture her as a little-girl victim, because she still sees herself that way, as evidenced in this lazy, sloppily written book.

She pays lip service to the "horrible" thing she did when she shot someone in cold blood, but it just sounds like lip service. She'd never be a "journalist" today if not for her notoriety.

I take no sides in the Fisher/Buttafuoco affair, but I wish Fisher had given us something with a little more substance. I wonder whether she's capable of that. If this book is any indication, she has a long way to go.

But I did come away with renewed admiration for her mother and for Mary Jo Buttafuoco.

2 out of 5 stars Have read better.......2007-02-09

Not that well written. Some of it was more than a little hard to believe.
Would not have bought for myself.

5 out of 5 stars Refund.......2007-01-19

I never got this item because it turned out to be out of stock. I did get a very prompt refund from the seller, and am still shopping for the item.

4 out of 5 stars Very interesting read.......2006-08-26

All I knew about Ms. Fisher's life was from random items in magazines and the news. I always knew the public wasn't getting the full story or even half of a truthful story by the way she was portrayed in the media, and it was interesting and important for her to set the record straight.

Amy was the ultimate latchkey child. By her admission, she was literally left alone her entire later childhood and teen years, practically raising herself when her father wasn't home terrorizing her. It's no wonder she became as confused as she did and found a nefarious fellow like Buttafuoco seductive.

She most certainly survived her share of abuse in prison and didn't let it harden her or derail the rest of her life, despite the especially long sentence for her crime of assault.

One thing I can say in the negative is that the "I'm a good person" thing did get a little tiresome towards the end. I could hear myself saying "Okay, Amy, I get it, you really ARE a good person!" But that's all I can say negative about this memoir. It was a very good thing that she wrote it, not only to dispel any rumours or misunderstandings about her case (I too had always thought Mary Jo had gotten shot in the face), but to also be a testimony to starting over.

She also adds a common-sense guide at the end to parents who need it spelled out for them in case they wonder if their child is headed for trouble.

5 out of 5 stars Two Sides to the Story.......2006-07-30

For many years we heard what Joey Butafuoco had to say as Amy Fisher was silent or at least she was told not to say anything. But now Amy Fisher finally tells her side of the story in this autobiography book about the horrific, near fatal act of violence that took place on May 19, 1992.

If I Knew Then...sends the readers back to the 90's as Amy Fisher tells her side of the story. She shares how Joey charmed and manipulated her and she admits to being a naive, troubled teenage girl. In the book, there are stories about what goes on in womens prison and Amy "tells all" about her experiences with inmates and guards.

The book, If I Knew Then... provides true stories about child abuse, warning signs for parents about troubled teens, and life in prison.

As a woman who was charmed by an older man, pregnant and married at eighteen-years-old, abused in a ten year marriage, and the mother of three teenage daughters, I have to admit that Amy Fisher made some valid points in her book. Teresa Brouwer [..]

    Book Description

The first CHAMPS/Life Skills programs began in the early 1990's and since then have erupted: more than 450 colleges and universities currently have progams. The University of Arizona has been used as a model nationwide for programming in academics, athletics, personal development, career development and community service. The importance of life skills and of having a broad based experience cannot be overestimated and there is a push for much more programming at the high school level.

In collaboration with the NCAA, student-athletes were surveyed at the NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference, through life skills program coordinators, as well as national student-athlete advisory committees. Dr. Cedric Dempsey, former President of the NCAA has written the foreword for this groundbreaking book that details NCAA student-athlete's experiences in the 5 areas of CHAMPS/Life Skills. Student-athletes share their top pieces of advice in each area, what they would do differently, obstacles they've overcome, best practices and reasons for their success. Included is an approach the author introduces as P-Factor Analysis. By examining seven "P's": Personalization, Preparation, Process, Problem Solving, Persistence, Perspective, and Pausing, student-athletes can evaluate their strengths and weaknesses and make an individualized "game plan" for improvement. This book also looks at the three "C's" of transition: Changes, Challenges and Choices. Listed in this section are the issues student-athletes have identified that they face. Then we get student-athletes to challenge their current assumptions - are their assumptions accurate? The rest of the book is thoughtful and insightful quotes in each of the areas. The need for this book is overwhelming according to many in the field and as one coach commented, "This should be REQUIRED reading for EVERY student-athlete."

Research has shown that students will often turn to their peers for advice. This is the only book on the market that is specific to student-athletes, to CHAMPS/Life Skills and that offers peer-peer advice. Practical advice and shared experiences covering a wide range of topics make this book different from the others. The response thus far has been tremendous and the book is being endorsed by, among others, Jackie Joyner Kersee, Lute Olson, Dick Vitale, Lorena Ochoa, Doug Weight, Mike Candrea, Ann Meyers Drysdale, renowned sports psychologist Dr. Jim Loehr, Steve Kerr, Jennie Finch, and former Division One National Student-Athlete Advisory Committee President, Michael Aguirre. The book has been enthusiastically received by Life Skills coordinators, coaches, counselors, advisors, administrators, parents and most importantly…student-athletes! To date, more than 150 schools are supporting it as well as the U.S. Olympic Committee, the National Junior College Association, the National High School Coaches Association and others.

        Customer Reviews:

        3 out of 5 stars A fun read!.......2005-08-11

If you take the good information about leadership and reduce it to sentences, you'll have Hartley and Hartman's If I Knew Then What I Know Now. If you take those brief, insightful sentences and put them into action, you'll be on your way to becoming a leadership role model. And that is precisely what the authors want for their readers.

If I Knew Then What I Know Now is filled with 248 sentences meant to be read, pondered and put into action. Many of these sentences are things we know but rarely think about. But when they are in front of us, we read and say, "Yes!"

I have my list of favorites:

        Work hard and smart simultaneously.
Take up a sport that will replenish you physically and allow you to meet new people.
Never drink alcohol in front of the people you mentor.
        Admit when you are mistaken.
        Don't gossip.
Don't use ten words when two will do.
Be the biggest encourager you know.
        Don't live in the past.
Leadership is action, not talking about action.
Your legacy will revolve around your actions, not your name.
        Love what you do.
Don't feel guilty for saying no.
Believe anything is possible with hard work.
And my favorite: Instead of listening to people complain about all that is wrong, give them a title and a deadline to fix the problem. They will either accomplish something amazing or they will shut up and stop bugging you, either way you have succeeded.

Armchair Interviews has shared fourteen leadership sentences we would all do well to put into action. There are two hundred forty-eight waiting for you to discover for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting and informative.......2005-04-01

For a guy that didn't grow up during Watergate, I found the third volume in this series to be a real page turner. Ambrose does a good job of telling you what happened, why it happened, how the public saw it and all the ways Nixon tried to keep the public from seeing it all.

Ruin and Recovery is a great subtitle for this volume because Nixon truly did recover. There were a few things he never lost... his ability to guage the American people and how they felt about candidates and the ability to breakdown foreign affairs. It was good to see that in the final years of his life he was called on as an expert on both.

I'm going to say it..."I ADMIRE RICHARD NIXON." Obviously I don't admire his Presidency or his decision-making during Watergate... but... for the most part I feel he was an idealistic, patriotic person that took a bad path and ruined his place in history at least when it comes to his Presidency. He did many things that Americans should respect though and it's high time we did.

I am glad he has made a recovery in the minds of many Americans and as I read this final volume I think I saw Ambrose almost making a case for Nixon being a kinder, gentler person who should be slightly more respected in American history.

Everybody makes mistakes and true Nixon made a big one, but I think in this final volume Ambrose almost makes a personal peace with Nixon and in a way advises Americans who resented Nixon to do the same.

Really an enjoyable series of books that I would recommend to anyone willing to spend 1900 words delving into what made Nixon both good and bad as a person and politican.

5 out of 5 stars Stellar Work on Nixon and Watergate.......2004-08-16

To fully understand Nixon, I highly recommend first reading volumes 1 and 2 of Ambrose's work. If, however, you are more interested in the Watergate affair, this volume certainly stands on its own.

This is the final part of Ambrose's definitive three-volume biography of Nixon. The destructive tendencies wonderfully described by Ambrose in the first two volumes come to a head in Ruin & Recovery. Ambrose takes the reader through the unfolding of the mess that was Watergate.

Even though we all know the ultimate outcome will be resignation, the author manages to maintain enough tension and suspense to keep the reader engrossed. In the wake of resignation, Ambrose follows Nixon's remarkable comeback as an elder statesman.

If an affordable copy is not currently available, be patient. Because this book is out of print, it will be more expensive than you might expect, but you can find it for $20 to $30 if you look around.

4 out of 5 stars Well balanced with the focus on Watergate.......2002-08-31

This third volume of the Nixon series is dominated by the Watergate scandal, with Ambrose skilfully detailing how the great election victory in 1972 slowly unravelled, as the full weight of the media and Democrat-controlled Congress worked to expose the whole tawdry episode. During this era, there was also the bombing of Hanoi followed by the Vietnam ceasefire, and summits with the Soviet leadership, but Watergate overshadowed all. Ambrose makes it clear that Nixon reinvented the story over and over, and bears a large burden of blame for the predicament he found himself in. He also makes clear that this was the opportunity for Nixon's arch enemies in the media and Congress to go for blood. The descent into the nightmare of possible impeachment and eventual resignation reads like an inevitablity, that Nixon lasted till August 1974 said a lot about his tenacity and stubborness in the face of relentless adversity.

The recovery of Nixon was never fully realized, although he was an authoritative elder statesman in later years, and Ambrose shows that Nixon had regained a fair amount of respect in his later years. Since his death the left has continued to disparage and villify his legacy, but as hard as it is to defend Nixon at times, he was still a statesman to be reckoned with, and his foreign policy record, especially with his China trip, is one of distinction. The eastern establishment despised Nixon, but he did not cater to them, it was the silent majority that was his constituency. One finishes this book wondering where America would have gone had the Watergate scandal not occurred.

              5 out of 5 stars A Nixon Finale.......2002-05-05

I enjoyed this concluding part of Stephen Ambrose's three-volume biography of Richard Nixon. This could have been the most difficult of the volumes to write - as the author needed to write in a way which maintained the reader's interest through the often tortuous intricacies of Watergate. I thought that the dangers (or challenges) were twofold: a reader's familiarity with the issues behind and history of Watergate could produce boredom, or the sheer complexity of the affair could bewilder the less well-informed reader.

I sat somewhere in the middle - I knew the broad issues (having read Woodward and Bernstein, and seen various TV documentaries) but being a non-American, my grasp of the relative roles and importance of the various US institutions involved and the politico-constitutional nuances was to say the least, tenuous. I think that Ambrose succeeded in both keeping my attention and guiding me through the whole affair: the book read at times like a political thriller, but with passages which guided me through the more complex issues. Whether or not this would bore politically aware Americans is not for me to judge.

The vast majority of this book is (rightly) devoted to Watergate. I thought that Ambrose made a good point, and one which is perhaps forgotten as the collective memory of the 1970s fades, that Watergate became such a tremendously irritating bore - people wanted rid of it because it was just so tedious, seeming to have been dominating the news forever, and producing a sclerosis in the body politic when major events of world importance needed to be addressed. Again, not being an American, I can't attest to the accuracy of Ambrose's point, but it seems to me to ring true.

The remainder of the book deals with Nixon's post-resignation reconstruction of himself, and one has to admire Nixon's sheer tenacity and willpower. At the end, Ambrose attemps an assessment of the man and his impact on America and the world. It's up the each reader to take his/her own view on that assessment, but in this cynical world when our trust in politicians seems to be ebbing ever further away, I thought that it's tempting to agree with Ambrose that Nixon's tragedy was that he got caught.

5 out of 5 stars Watergate happened in a democracy!.......2002-03-26

Stephen Ambroses third Nixon Volume : "Ruin And
Recovery" takes on into the heart and soul
              of democracy.
Cynics accustomed to political scandal might
be bemused by Watergate. What was all the
              hullabaloo really all about?

Ambrose puts it something like this in the book:
To the british, with their official Secrets Act, nothing
that Nixon had done seemed that out of the ordinary,
much less illegal. The Italians simply threw up their hands
at the crazy Americans. To the French. Watergate
confirmed their suspicions about the naive Americans.
In west Germany, the frequent comparison of Nixon
to Hitler by his enemies in America showed either
how little the Americans understood Hitler,
or how little they understood Nixon, or both.
Nixons friends in China, could not understand
why he just didn't shoot his critics.

But in a democracy you must play by the law,
and you must trust and have faith in the wisdom
              of the election process.
Watergate was all about how these things were
violated and how american democracy proved strong
              enough to recover.
Ruin and Recovery reads like a detective story,

                              Book Description

"Yosemite Valley in July of 1967 would have had to be seen to be believed. There was never an empty campsite in the valley; you had to create a space for yourself in a sea of cars, tents, and humanity. . . . The camp next to ours had fifty people in it, with rugs hung between the trees, incense burning, and a stereo set going full volume." Scenes such as this will probably never be repeated in Yosemite or any other national park, yet the urgent problem remains of balancing the public's desire to visit the parks with the parks' need to be protected from too many people and cars and too much development. In this book, longtime park visitor and professional geographer Bob O'Brien explores the National Park Service's attempt to achieve "sustainability"--a balance that allows as many people as possible to visit a park that is kept in as natural a state as possible. O'Brien details methods the NPS has used to walk the line between those who would preserve vast tracts of land for "no use" and those who would tap the Yellowstone geysers to generate electricity. His case studies of six western "crown jewel" parks show how rangers and other NPS employees are coping with issues that impact these cherished public landscapes, including visitation, development, and recreational use.
