The pace of life, and the demands of life, just keep getting more intense.  And for many, these tough times bring life crises.  This is a book of encouragement, hope and freedom... an invitation to meet Christ at the crossroads of our lives and move beyond the tough times.

4 out of 5 stars Thank You, Chuck!.......2007-03-21

No one has impacted me more in the early years of my ministry like Chuck Swindoll. I read everything he wrote. He writes like a pastor who cares for his readers. His readers are like his congregants.

This volume is no different. It reflects the heart of a pastor and the mind of a teacher. Buy it! It will help you through some tough stuff.

4 out of 5 stars This is the kind of book Christian authors should be writing!!!!.......2005-08-06

I've always liked Charles Swindoll's books. He writes in a conversational, warm style but uses a lot of biblical references and anecdotes from his personal life that resonate with me. He seems to be speaking my language and telling my life story with each book!

By way of contraste, some contemporary Christian authors (such as Rob Bell, author of Velvet Elvis) gloss over the Bible (or outright undermine it) and offer nothing but more questions, doubts and concerns. (See my review of Velvet Elvis for more on that kind of Christian author's efforts to speak to a "new generation.")

By way of contrast, Charles Swindoll attempts to answer questions and heal wounds. He's not divisive or offensive in his efforts, either. He seems to be a wise, compassionate man who truly cares about those in his church -- as well as those reading his books around the world.

I've been through a few tough times in my life, and I usually gain strength by reading books like this one from Charles Swindoll.

Thank you, Pastor Swindoll for doing so much to touch the lives of those around you.

5 out of 5 stars A book providing biblical answers to contemporary problems.......2004-12-11

Charles R. Swindoll has been through a lot of tough stuff. As a pastor, college chancellor, radio host and author, he has experienced firsthand many of the troubles that life has to offer. From "Anxiety" to "Temptation" and from "Confrontation" to "Shame," the fourteen topics he covers provide a model for the reader to use when life blindsides him. Thus it is with the authority that comes from experience that Dr. Swindoll generously offers to help those who are struggling with their own particular pile of tough stuff.

GETTING THROUGH THE TOUGH STUFF explores two basic premises that are built on an underlying theme. First, if you are alive on this planet, you will have problems. The second premise is that God has provided us with the original self-help manual, the Bible. The underlying theme is the adequacy of God's love and grace to see us through even the toughest of stuff.

Dr. Swindoll has the gift of knowledge when it comes to the Bible, and he deftly identifies the roots of our "troubles" as well as the solutions to them by referencing biblical stories and passages. In each short, focused chapter, even seasoned believers will wonder anew at the omniscience of God. He knew just what kind of problems we would face, how we would try to solve them according to the wisdom of the world, and how sadly we would fail. Then, as Dr. Swindoll demonstrates, God in His loving and benevolent way provided us with the wisdom of the ages if only we would use it --- not only when things get tough but even before they get tough.

Often, when people have problems, they feel guilty and shamed or angry and resentful. But the problems themselves have been around since the beginning of time. And, more importantly, Jesus Himself experienced them. So when the Word of God offers answers, it can be trusted because the Word Himself did what His Father told Him to do...and it worked. We cannot be exactly like Jesus because, though He was tempted, He never sinned; often our problems are compounded because we do sin. Yet, through God's grace, the same solutions are available to us, and if we truly repent, we won't have to go through the same tough stuff again.

GETTING THROUGH THE TOUGH STUFF is not a simple "take two verses and call me in the morning" book of platitudes. It provides biblical answers to contemporary problems in a loving and gentle way. Charles Swindoll is a man after God's own heart.

Book Description

"I had wanted to wrap this book up in a neat little package. I wanted a perfect ending. Now I've learned the hard way that some poems don't rhyme, and some stories don't have a clear beginning, middle, and end."

The world fondly remembers the many faces of Gilda Radner: the adamant but misinformed Emily Litella; the hyperkinetic Girl Scout Judy Miller; the irrepressibly nerdy Lisa Loopner; the gross-out queen of local network news, Rosanne Rosannadanna. A supremely funny performer, Gilda lost a long and painful struggle in May 1989 to "the most unfunny thing in the world"--cancer. But the face she showed the world during this dark time was one of great courage and hope. It's Always Something is the story of her struggle told in Gilda's own remarkable words--a personal chronicle of strength and indomitable spirit and love undiminished by the cruel ravages of disease.

This is Gilda, with whom we laughed on Saturday Night Live: warm, big-hearted, outrageous, and real. This is Gilda's last gift to us: the magnificent final performance of an incomparable entertainer whose life, though tragically brief, enriched our own lives beyond measure.

5 out of 5 stars Thank You Gilda.......2007-04-02

I was diagnosed with colon cancer in April 2005 and life has never been the same. My partner purchased this book for me and I loved it. I loved it not because it read like a self help book but because it read as a true commentary of life with cancer. It's words touched a part of me that no self help book could ever touch. Radner's everyday dealings with this insiduous disease made me laugh and cry and boil over with anger. Radner's words help me to roam through the numerous rooms that one staggers through after a diagnosis of cancer. My heartfelt thanks to Gilda and I would recommend the book to everyone who is affected and infected with cancer.

5 out of 5 stars Cancer and the Babbling Mind of a Comedic Genius .......2007-03-05

I first discovered Gilda from watching the TV-movie of this starring Jami Gertz on ABC back in 2002 (which I don't recommend for highly-acclaimed critics, or to anyone for various reasons resting solely on the persona portrayed by Gertz) .
Although growing up in Detroit, I wasn't very familiar with Gilda as one would think, being from the same town. I looked EVERYWHERE to try to purchase this book, on here, Border's, Barnes&Noble and other various websites and my last resort, eBay (which I recommend if you don't know where to purchase it). In which case, I received it in the mail after a week or so, ripped opened the packaging and read it like a fat kid eating cake. Wanting more. After reading the book, you feel like you know Gilda. While reading the book, you feel like you know Gilda.
She starts off talking about her random excursions in her ambiguous life, how she wanted her story to go one way, but it took a left turn and made another. Gilda especially highlights her relationship with Gene and how they met, where they got married, the process of getting married in a French town hall and saying "I do" at every pause, because she couldn't understand the French language. She did everything in her power to try to become Gene's wife. She suffocated him, he moved to New York came back to see her in Connecticut and when "the ducks were landed" she ended her relationship with Former SNL lead-guitarist, G.E. Smith and so began the relationship between Rosanne Rosannadanna and Willy Wonka. Her never ending battle to have a child, put me at the edge of my seat as she went through 2 miscarriages.
Feeling unexplainably fatigued all the time, she tried to find the source of her problem by taking vitamins, sleeping more, eating properly. She stopped smoking (a habit she picked up at age 14) and went to doctors who mis- prescribed her with "Epsom-Bar Syndrome." Eventually, it got to the point where she couldn't get up and was constantly tired, so she got other opinions and was diagnosed.
STAGE FOUR Ovarian Cancer.
Afraid to be seen in public, she took therapy and began to realize how many other people were suffering from the same thing. She joined the Wellness Community, found her place and died on May 20, 1989. This book touched my heart from beginning to end. As if she was my life-long friend. I own the original 1989 edition, and I am NEVER letting ANYONE else touch it.

4 out of 5 stars Gilda Radner--Class Act.......2006-08-25

Gilda Radner was a very fine performer, but this book--not devoted to her entertainment career--shows her to be a class act off-stage as well. Some of us are lucky to have faired well at the hands of brilliant medicos, and are very grateful for it, but anyone who has had long-term experience with America's byzantine medical system knows how easy it is to become fixated, to the detriment of one's own health, upon its appalling lapses and petty cruelties, and lose sight of what's positive. Practically crawling, doubled-over in pain, before doctors took her condition seriously, and, later, away from treatment for an extended period of "remission," only to find out it was merely a mistaken test reading, Radner shows no bitterness in this honest, brave, and, yes, sometimes funny book.

Someone so famous during the golden era of "Saturday Night Live" that she could hardly walk the streets of New York without being mobbed by fans, Radner is reduced by illness to humble sprees involving bingo parlors and mail-order catalogues. Demonstrating resilience, but also a sweet brave sadness that makes you hope, against all sane logic, that things will turn out differently.

It has been written elsewhere that when Radner was very ill in the hospital she would make the rounds cheering up other patients, introducing herself "Hi, I used to be Gilda Radner." There you have it--that transcendent quality humor sometimes has to defy all human limitations, even death. Fortunately Radner will defy it more than most because her warm, precise and yet delightfully silly comedy will live on in tape, film and this very good book. Thank you, Gilda, you will always be really something.

How wonderful to read something by the funny and wonderful and loveable Gilda Radner. Her descriptions of her trials and tribulations with various doctors..her descriptions of her house. Fate with cancer as a fate worse than the interior decorator..Love for the world..A shining example..A wonderful lady who inspired me during my chemo..Love to her..I shall conjure..The spirit of the one who made us feel not alone..

5 out of 5 stars Ovarian Cancer at 29.......2005-04-12

I read Gilda's book in August of 1991 when I was going thru Chemotherapy for Ovarian Cancer. I was so scared because my 3 children were under 5 years of age. This book gave me alot of courage. It also made me realize that I had a better chance because it was caught in time where her's wasn't, which is a real shame. She suffered so much & so did Gene Wilder at her side. I borrowed it to a friend whose sister was also going thru this, but unfortuneately she was not a survivor. I recommend this book to everyone, especially the men. It'll make you appreciate your women & it'll also make you aware of this silent killer that is usually caught too late.

Dorrie Williams-Wheeler tells the story of a young African American girl that touches you. Lori, the main character, struggles with life, school and trying to grow up in a harsh reality. I recommend this book for anyone who wants to know that things will be OK and that there is life after the highs and lows of young adulthood. As a Caucasian reader it still pulled me in and strung me along! I recommend this book!

I love the gritty and sometimes raw emotion that this book brings out. It makes you want to cry with the charcters at times and laugh with them. It a good book for young adults and I would certainly recommend it. I can't wait for the sequal!

      Book Description

Boston's legendary Scollay Square is still fondly remembered today as the home of vaudeville and burlesque theaters, tattoo parlors, hot dog stands, barrooms, bookstores, shooting galleries, and other entertainment attractions. Located in the heart of downtown Boston, Scollay Square was a place where people of all ages and walks of life, from Harvard College students to transient sailors on shore leave, went to forget their troubles and have a good time.

Now the long, colorful, and occasionally uproarious history of "Good Old Scollay Square" is recaptured in this lively look at the notorious Boston district. David Kruh chronicles the story of the Square from its origins in the Colonial era, through its heyday as an entertainment mecca, to current plans for the redevelopment of City Hall Plaza. He interweaves the personal reminiscences of Bostonians and entertainers with historical narrative to re-create the flavor and essence of Scollay Square. Here one will revisit the Old Howard Theater, Crawford House, and Joe & Nemo's hot dog stand, and relive the days when vaudevillians, slapstick comedians, and stripteasers Ann Corio and Sally Keith ruled the Square.

Always Something Doing will refresh the memories of those old enough to recall the good times in Scollay Square, and it will provide younger Boston residents with a rich portrait of an enduring part of their city's fascinating history.

                  Book Description

Much has changed in warfare in recent years, with America now dominant on the international scene and terrorism the new enemy. In light of these changes, the need for moral grounding in military actions is a more pressing concern than ever.

When it was originally published, Moral Issues in Military Decision Making reflected the concerns posed by nuclear stalemate and the lessons of Vietnam. In that highly-praised work, Anthony Hartle outlined the essential elements of the Professional Military Ethic created for American military forces. In this new edition, he reexamines the moral foundations for America's military leadership in the post-9/11 era.

Considering world affairs since the first edition-the Gulf War, Bosnia, Afghanistan, Iraq, 9/11, and the emergence of the United States as an unrivaled military power-Hartle explains how these events have raised ethical issues that differ dramatically from those of the Cold War. He assesses how moral, legal, and psychological concerns have been impacted by the war on terrorism, homeland defense, asymmetric warfare, the proliferation of American military interventions, and the UN's role in peacekeeping operations. Using meticulously analyzed case studies-twice as many as in the first edition-he considers such moral dilemmas as torture, challenging superior officers, use of overwhelming force, and responding to fire in the presence of civilian shields.

In this revision, Hartle examines further the status of professional military ethics in light of current affairs, changes in the articulation of military values, and recent research. In a new chapter on human rights, he relates moral principles directly to values embedded in the Constitution and argues that overwhelming American military power cannot succeed unless it is accompanied by the moral force of the values it seeks to protect. His discussion of global anti-terrorist opera-tions focuses especially on the difficulties of applying conventional laws of war and human rights doctrine in military operations.

Hartle convincingly shows that national security is as much about the preservation of moral principles as it is about the protection of America's citizens and borders. His book demonstrates that the American military must continue to observe those principles in order to be effective in its primary mission.

                      Book Description

In its first edition, The Global Resurgence of Democracy brought together essays on democratization written from 1989 to 1991 by internationally prominent scholars, intellectuals, and political leaders. This thoroughly revised and updated second edition extends that work with a wealth of fresh material on a wide range of conceptual, historical, institutional, and policy issues.

"A useful compilation popularizing the work of an influential journal... The Journal of Democracy is an effective tribune for mainstream U.S. thinking on these issues." -- Political Studies

5 out of 5 stars A vital theoretical and comparative foundation.......2000-01-10

Diamond and Plattner offer a valuable update from their 1993 book, now comprised of articles from the Journal of Democracy from 1990 through 1995. Anchored by a thorough introduction, the first section introduces the third wave of democratization, the new world disorder, and definitions and dangers of democracy. Articles on institutional choices debate the structural questions of democracy, with a broad perspective on presidential, parliamentary, constitutional and representative questions. A new section on civil society discusses an area to which political scientists are bringing renewed attention. Eight new chapters make up the cautiously optimistic section on the prospects for democracy.

A strength of this book as a teaching tool is that it offers both theory and comparative chapters. Several articles are broad-based, discussing paradoxes intrinsic to all democracies or the gap between democratic concepts and political realities, for example. Others are country- or region-specific, such as civil society in Russia or pluralism in the Arab world.

A second strength is the frequent intermixing of political, economic and cultural concerns. In many individual chapters and in the collection overall, the reader is reminded that institutions, currencies and mores do not exist or operate in vacuum. Rather, they influence and change each other -- and not always for the better. Chapters on technocratic economic emphasis in post-communist states and ethnic divisions and underdevelopment in Africa are particularly revealing.

By highlighting the research published in the Journal of Democracy, this volume offers educators a valuable collection for comparative and theoretical approaches to democratization. The readings prompted thoughtful debates among my students on the central issues. Such a fluid field depends upon regular updates, and this reviewer looks forward to using future editions. Book Description

The proceedings of a symposium held in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, in February 1998.

The symposium was aimed at fostering information exchange and identifying the "state-of-the-science" of swift fox ecology and status in North America. Biologists and endangered species experts from fifteen states, three provinces, and seven countries participated in the symposium to discuss current distribution, population dynamics, characteristics of dispersal, habitat selection, disease, taxonomy, legal status, and conservation of this species, as well as information about the closely related kit fox. A specific goal of the meeting was to formulate a strategy that best addressed ways in which management could be applied to increase the distribution of the species and the viability of existing populations.
