Work's still not completely finished on Bramasole, the Tuscan house that California-based poet and bestselling author Frances Mayes bought a decade ago and has been fixing up every summer since. Nevertheless, in Bella Tuscany, she goes out--in search of Italy and Italian life. The sequel to Under the Tuscan Sun is awash with sensual discovery, from Sicilian markets with "rainbows of shining fish on ice" to the aqueous dream of Venice "shimmering in the diluted sunlight." Wherever she is, Mayes celebrates everyday rituals, such as picking wild asparagus, "dark spears poking out of the dirt ... stalks as thin as yarn" and driving through country rains, as "the green landscape smears across the windshield" for buffalo mozzarella and demijohns of sfuso--bulk wine kept fresh with a slick of olive oil on top. Mayes also ventures into the world of the locals, some "bent as a comma" and others throwing six-hour communion feasts where half a dozen cooks in a barn continually send out heaping platters of pasta with wild boar sauce, roasted lamb, and even the thigh of a giant cow--wrapping up the festivities with honeyed vin santo, grappa, and dancing to the accordion. Capturing the details that enrich the commonplace, in Bella Tuscany Mayes appears less like a visitor and more like someone discovering in Tuscany a real home and a real life. --Melissa Rossi
Amazon.com Audiobook Review
Following up on her bestselling novel, Under the Tuscan Sun, Frances Mayes returns to her beloved villa in the small hill town of Cortona, Italy. Welcomed back like an old friend, she is soon puttering in the garden, and as Mayes devotees might expect, busy in the kitchen as well. As Mayes rediscovers her taste for la dolce vita, she embarks on a journey of cultural awakening and embraces a newfound romance with the Italian language and people. "I came to Italy expecting adventure," reads Mayes. "What I never anticipated is the absolute sweet joy of everyday life."
Mayes is as generous a cook as she is a writer, flavoring her story with tasty descriptions of local gustatory delights--many of which are included in a small recipe book. She also serves as narrator, and the beguiling simplicity of her voice makes listening as enjoyable as spending an afternoon with a well-traveled favorite aunt. (Running time: 9 hours, 6 cassettes) --George Laney
Book Description
Frances Mayes, whose enchanting #1
New York Times bestseller
Under the Tuscan Sun made the world fall in love with Tuscany, invites us back for a delightful new season of friendship, festivity, and food there and throughout Italy.
Happiness? The color of it must be spring green, impossible to describe until I see a just-hatched lizard sunning on a stone. That color, the glowing green lizard skin, repeats in every new leaf. The regenerative power of nature explodes in every weed, stalk, branch. Working in the mild sun, I feel the green fuse of my body, too. Surges of energy, kaleidoscopic sunlight through the leaves, the soft breeze that makes me want to say the word "zephyr"--this mindless simplicity can be called happiness.
Having spent her summers in Tuscany for the past several years, Frances Mayes relished the opportunity to experience the pleasures of primavera, an Italian spring. A sabbatical from teaching in San Francisco allowed her to return to Cortona--and her beloved house, Bramasole--just as the first green appeared on the rocky hillsides.
Bella Tuscany, a companion volume to
Under the Tuscan Sun, is her passionate and lyrical account of her continuing love affair with Italy. Now truly at home there, Mayes writes of her deepening connection to the land, her flourishing friendships with local people, the joys of art, food, and wine, and the rewards and occasional heartbreaks of her villa's ongoing restoration. It is also a memoir of a season of change, and of renewed possibility. As spring becomes summer she revives Bramasole's lush gardens, meets the challenges of learning a new language, tours regions from Sicily to the Veneto, and faces transitions in her family life.
Filled with recipes from her Tuscan kitchen and written in the sensuous and evocative prose that has become her hallmark,
Bella Tuscany is a celebration of the sweet life in Italy.

SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE BOOK REVIEW
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2007-01-26
I had heard about UtTS and how wonderful it was, so when a copy of Bella Tuscany came my way, I grabbed it happily. Perhaps I didn't give Mayes enough of a chance: I assumed she would be a female version of Peter Mayle, and write with joy and humor.
After about a third of the way through, I was thoroughly sick of her whining and sniveling. Her descriptions of food and landscape and wine, I thought, were less than dazzling, less than enamoured - they were more like descriptions from a creative writing class. Mayes became a traveling companion that annoyed me, someone who could not appreciate her good fortune, a drain on anyone's good humor.
I never did finish the book. I couldn't see my way to spend another moment with Mayes.
If wishes were horses we'd be eating steak.......2006-11-17
I get that it is the sweet life in Tuscany. I get that Frances Mayes works her [...] off planting roses and whirling all over the country side searching for the prefect tile for the butterfly bathroom. I get that she became an overnight success and very well know because of a movie based so loosely on her book Under the Tuscan Sun it was an eerily reminder of Demi Moore's version of The Scarlet Letter. I have never set foot in Italy although I know people who have. Frances Mayes is not one of them. Bully for you. I feel very put out by the book jacket glossing over all the really depressing things that run all over the "sensuous and evocative prose." And what was in the package Ed had in his suitcase for her for Christmas - what is the bloody point in saying how small it was if we don't get to find out what it was! It was like reading the ramblings of a spoiled child.
Boring.......2006-09-15
I am about half way through the book and can't bring myself to read another page. I only read this far hoping that soon it would become as interesting as her first book, but sadly I feel I've wasted enough time listening to the boring rants of wine, gardens, and other writers... If you'd like to read whole chapters devoted to describing gardens and flowers and if you like to whole chapters devoted to recipes she's come across while in Tuscany, you'll enjoy this book. The only parts I enjoyed were her travels to other parts of the country.
Francis Mayes' Italian Adventure Continues.......2006-08-18
Francis Mayes returns to Tuscany from her teaching job in San Francisco, and while continuing to work on Bramasole, she takes the time to make trips to other areas of Italy. She is feathering her nest with the beautiful pottery, great wines and cheeses, clay tiles and other treasures that she discovers as she travels beyond the village she has made her own. I love food, gardening, shopping and planning a household myself, so Mayes' accounts of her adventures in Italy really appeal to me. She has a wonderful way of describing color and texture and flavor, that makes the armchair traveller feel as though they are really in Italy. Like some other reviewers, I am unnerved by Mayes' prosperity and elitism, but I still really enjoy the fantasy of living the "sweet life", buying beautiful things, finding myself in ancient places as the sun sets, and eating wonderful food which Mayes so skillfully brings to life.
This book provides an imaginary escape for the reader..........2006-05-03
The book itself is beautifully bound with thick hand cut pages. I found it to be pleasurable simply to hold it as I read it. Frances took me on a gentle journey through various small towns, museums and trattorias throughout Italy, along with shadowing her personal journey during that 6 or so years. The book had everything I want from Ms. Mayes Tuscany stories. If you are looking for an escape to an Italian dreamland, you will like this book.

Amazon's Waterloo!.......2006-11-06
This is the first time I had a problem with Amazon shipment. I ordered the 1995 edition, but Amazon repeatedly (twice) shipped the 1966 edition. However, the customer service was excellent. I could ship back without charge and the amount was credited to my account. That is the reason I am giving 4 stars.
An Erudite Synthesis of the Enlightenment.......2004-10-02
Peter Gay is an important intellectual historian and in his lengthy work "The Enlightenment: The Rise of Modern Paganism" he summarizes the ideas of the great philosophers and how they changed the world. This book is a work of great erudition, of synthesis and he begins with the relationship between the philosophers of the 18th century and those of the classical period. The philosophers of the Enlightenment, active in the late seventeenth through the middle of the eighteenth century, had an affection for the Greek and Roman era, but felt the recent discoveries in science, the search for empirical fact, had allowed their own era to supercede the work of the great classical philosophers.
While the classicists inspired the philosophers of the Enlightenment, theis new breed of thinkers were generally contemptuous of religion and they sought to confront, to challenge and to overturn the philosophical concepts of the Hebrew and Christian thinkers who they viewed as their rhetorical adversaries in the battle beaten reason and faith.
Gay is an engaging writer with a gift for synthesizing a raft of material. Here he neatly summarizes the philosophical historians work: "...the philosophes wrote history with rage and with partisanship, and their very passion allowed them to penetrate into regions hitherto inaccessible to historical explorers. Yet it also made them condescending and oddly parochial: their sense of the past merged all too readily with their sense of the present." Although the philosophes view of history was critical, pessimistic, they saw the world "divided between ascetic superstitious enemies of the flesh, and men who affirmed life, the body, knowledge, and generosity; between mythmakers and realists, priests and philosophers."
Gay's book neatly depicts an age, the conflicts between enlightenment thinkers and the past, their areas of agreement and disagreement and, their battles with the weakened Christianity of the day. He points out how te philosophers used the scholarship and erudition of the Catholic orders against them. "The Enlightenment" is not a history of philosophy, summarizing the work of each major philosopher, but a history of the way that the ideas and the debate developed in the period. In this volume, he writes of Voltaire, Hume, Smith, Bentham, Gibbon, Diderot, Montsequieu, Lessing, Locke, Holbach, Rousseau and finally, Jefferson and Franklin, intertwining them in a consistent narrative. He concludes the book with a helpful bibliographical essay which will help point those of us who want to do further reading in the right direction. Elegantly written, in clear, crisp prose, "The Enlightenment" is a detailed and nuanced account of the men and ideas that gave us the gift - and curse - of modernity.
excellent book!.......2003-09-04
The Enlightenment has met many critics nowadays, which even make people overlook the positive worth of the enlightenment to modren society. This great book can help readers make a comprehensive and positive view to the enlightenment. I recommend it !
Engrossing and detailed.......2003-02-16
Peter Gay needs no introduction, but I still feel that this work needs to be lauded for what it manages to achieve: it provides an exhaustively detailed socio-cultural account of the enlightenment that is as enjoyable as it is informative. The main slant of this work, namely that the 18th century enlightenment was a reprisal/continuation/adoration of classical (hence Pagan) culture is coherent and functions as a solid structure to this work. Highly recommended.
Rarely has a book been so enlightening.......2002-12-17
As an intellectual history, "The Rise of Modern Paganism" has few peers. Peter Gay makes sense of a dizzying array of thinkers and their (often dissimilar or even opposing) thoughts. He shows, in prose both clear and elegant, that the Enlightenment was more a phenomenon than a program, albeit a phenomenon tied together by a love of inquiry and intellectual exploration.

this reads like an encyclodpedia, but is essential.......2004-05-12
This book is about the education of the intellectuals of the Enlightenment. While it is very interesting to trace how their minds developed - how they mastered and began to question the works of the masters of antiquity in a manner far more daring than the scholars of the Renaissance - it is so encylopediac that it impedes the narrative. In other words, I got bored and literally set it down for years. However, this is the work of a first-rate historian and so may have been too sophisticated for an amateur like me. (I like history, but this guy has READ EVERYTHING in the original, which I cannot.) Once I picked it up again, I did indeed enjoy it. Rather heavy handedly, Gay argues that what they concluded was that Christianity was a fiction and could not be true. Readers should know this. While I am somewhere on the spectrum between atheism and agnosticism, what I interpreted as Gay's atheism is even a bit too much for me.
I learned an immense amount about this period here, perhaps the most pivotal of the modern world. While a bit much, if taken in the right way it is a great guide to many of the debates that continue to this day and that originated with these intellectuals. However, I look forward to the next book, which is about what they did in a practical institutional sense rather than what and how they thought (covered by this first volume).
Recommended, but it is serious scholarly study rather than vacation reading!

Book Description
In the last half of the twentieth century, cultural products--from films and news reports to museum exhibits and novels--profoundly shaped ideas about the relationship between Americans and the Middle East. In this innovative book, Melani McAlister explores the cultural history of political interests, arguing that U.S. encounters with the Middle East were influenced by both the presence of oil and the religious symbolism of the region. McAlister's richly textured study shows how culture functions as a social and historical force in shaping politics and identity. She skillfully weaves lively and accessible readings of popular culture with a rigorous analysis of U.S. foreign policy and the domestic politics of race.
McAlister begins by situating the postwar development of U.S.-Middle East relations, including the rise of anticolonialism and the establishment of the state of Israel. Subsequent chapters consider specific events and cultural texts such as the epic film The Ten Commandments, the King Tut museum exhibit, writings from the Black arts movement, the U.S.-Iranian hostage crisis, and the 1990-1991 Gulf War. In each of these cases, McAlister demonstrates how representations of the Middle East have been a site of struggle over both the nature of U.S. foreign policy and the construction of race, religion, and gender within the United States.
Truly interdisciplinary, this work will appeal to a wide audience as it illuminates the significant intersection of culture and politics that is at the heart of both nationalism and globalization.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent exploration of cultural and social identity.......2004-03-18
An incredibly good book. McAlister dissects and analyzes the representations of the Middle East in various media -- movies, news, plays, books, etc. -- and their relationships to the projection of US global power and the shaping of US cultural identity since the end of World War II. As she puts it, her goal is to address the absence of culture from discussions of the history of US imperialism, the absence of empire from discussions of US culture, and the absence of the US from discussions of postcolonial imperialism.
Among her subjects, all of which she treats deftly and with attentive detail, are: Amiri Baraka's "A Black Mass," the Israeli military raid on Entebbe, the 1977 John Frankenheimer movie "Black Friday," the tour of King Tutankhamen's artifacts through the United States during 1977-1978, Hal Lindsey's "The Late Great Planet Earth," the rise of the Moral Majority, the Iran hostage crisis of 1979-1980 and its obsessive coverage in the US media, the prevalence of military revenge movies in the 1980s like "Navy Seals" and "Delta Force," Betty Mahmoody's book "Not without My Daughter," and the Gulf War.
I found particularly compelling her discussion of 1950s biblical epics, such as "Ben-Hur" and "The Ten Commandments." The recent controversy over "The Passion of the Christ" is put into definite context when you see how "The Ten Commandments" was received (and what purposes it served) when it was released in 1956.

Book Description
This practical book covers all of the fundamentals for obtaining air quality permits for new sources of air pollutant emissions and Title V operating permits for operating sources. Written for facility environmental managers, consultants, and air quality regulatory staff, Air Quality Permitting provides a thorough discussion on the strategies of successfully permitting a facility.
Customer Reviews:
Good Overview.......2000-11-08
This book provides a good overview of air permitting and good explanations of many of the issues involved. I don't think it "...shows facility air quality managers, regulatory agency staff, and consultants how to prepare permit applications for Title V Federal Operating Permits or for New Source Review (NSR)or Prevention of Significant Deterioration (PSD) perrmits for new or modified sources of air pollutant emissions, and how to comply with permits obtained." The differences between different facilities and states are too great for one book to do all that. Most books providing advice about air permitting imagine the reader is working for some "Mega-firm" with a team of eager co-workers. They might prove more useful if they focused on the poor guy locked alone in a room with six inches of forms and a bad calculator. Still, Leonard knows his material and provides many useful insights into the permit process. He writes clearly, has organized his material well and does a better job with a huge topic than any other book I have found.
This is a great book on Air Quality Permitting in the U.S........1998-10-06
I used this book last year, as a text book in a class at UCLA that I teach. I am also using it this year. The book was very well received by the students. I found it very useful to teach from, and as a reference book. It is the only book of its kind, as far as I know. Thanks, Leon!

Book Description
Air Quality Compliance and Permitting Handbook provides a straightforward, easy-to-read, nonlegal explanation of the regulatory and technical concepts of air quality compliance, explaining how to effectively manage air compliance at a facility. Although the majority of the book is devoted to a wide general applicability, it also describes the actual permit submissions that are required under regulations (many of which end up being state requirements) and the technical and analytical approaches which are needed in preparing the information required in the permit applications. Useful topics include: Fundamental 1990 and previous Clean Air Act concepts, Permitting, Compliance Checklists and risk assessment methodologies.

Made Sense of It All.......2004-05-23
This is a terrific, clear explanation of air pollution rules. As a plant manager, I got more useful information from this book than I got in five years of paying attorneys and consultants. It's an easy read and it's easy to find the information you need. In the 700 pages (not 1,500 like somebody else said) Mr. Trzupek makes sense of all of the rules that nobody can understand, gives you weapons to fight with and provides a bunch of resources to use. This is a book I can actually use.
Not Worth It.......2003-03-14
Three hundred pages of generalities, very little specific. 1200 pages of appendix. The book was over price, considering it is really nothing more than a dictionary of air quality compliance and permitting. The chapters and topics over and over suggest the topic at hand is complicated and changing and to variable to go into specifics. For 90 dollars and 1500 pages I want to know specifics for different processes, at different levels, in different regions, in different states. On page three he suggests that if you are looking for a book that covers every possible contingency this book is not for you...he is correct...yet the book should be renamed to 'If You Are In Business, You Can't Afford Not To Hire Someone That Can Understand Air-Quality Compliance...But Not Write A Comprehensive Text On The Subject in 1500 Pages or Less".
