Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but limited.......2006-10-05

Wow, this is tough. Every volunteer has a unique story as amazing as that may seem.
Kirk writes about his time in Nicaragua and Chile. While I enjoyed reading his memoir, I have to say it lacks detail and the structure is too linear. He tends to jump quickly to another topic without a lot of development. I wanted to know what food he ate, what the country people's lives were like among other things and that is rarely included.
I'm glad I read it and feel like I got to know a very unique and admirable individual.
A lot of Peace Corps memoirs are silly and self-indulgent. This is, sadly, the opposite - terse and serious. If I had to choose one book this probably wouldn't be it. I read Moritz Thomsen's Living Poor before I went to S. Korea as a volunteer and recommend it before this good but sparse book.

5 out of 5 stars A Most Unusual Experience!.......2002-09-14

A most incredible man, this Kirk Hackenberg. To have gone through two terms in the Peace Corps seems to be unusual enough but to live to tell about it under the circumstances is quite another story. His adventures were death defying on several levels. Interesting to see how governments can actually interfere with and hinder the good intentions of those concerned with the well-being of people in their own countries. A bit of a history lesson as well!

More than 45 years ago, then Senator John F. Kennedy challenged Americans to willingly serve their country—to give two years of their life to the service of others and, without hesitation, Americans rose to his challenge. Since the Peace Corps' beginnings in 1961, more than 180,000 have served as Volunteers. The mission of the Peace Corps is to help the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women; to help promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served; to help promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans. The Peace Corps was officially established on March 1, 1961 with the number of volunteers and trainees to date totaling 182,000, and the total number of countries served now at 138. There are currently 7810 volunteers and trainees, with these statistics: gender: 58% female, 42% male; marital status: 91% single, 9% married; minorities: 16% of volunteers; age: average-28 years old; median-25 years old; volunteers over 50: 6% of volunteers; oldest volunteer is 79.

President John F. Kennedy: February 21, 1961 "I hope that when the Peace Corps ultimately is organized, and young men and women go out around the world, that they will place their greatest emphasis on teaching; and secondly, that they will learn themselves far more than they will teach, and that we will therefore have another link which binds us to the world around us." Remarks to delegates to a Youth Fitness Conference

March 1, 1961 — "Life in the Peace Corps will not be easy. There will be no salary and allowances will be at a level sufficient only to maintain health and meet basic needs. Men and women will be expected to work and live alongside the nationals of the country in which they are stationed - doing the same work, eating the same food, talking the same language. But if the life will not be easy, it will be rich and satisfying. For every young American who participates in the Peace Corps - who works in a foreign land - will know that he or she is sharing in the great common task of bringing to man that decent way of life which is the foundation of freedom and a condition of peace." Statement upon signing Executive Order 10924 establishing the Peace Corps

                    Book Description

This history of the 10th Mountain Division during World War II focuses on the personal experiences of the mountain troops who served in Alaska and Italy. Feuer conveys the opinions expressed by the veterans about the conduct of the campaigns--both the good and the bad, with no holds barred. Senator Bob Dole, who was seriously wounded during the campaign, provides a foreword. This fascinating account also reveals the differences in training and strategy from those employed by German ski troops of the same era.

Author A. B. Feur skillfully puts a collection of personal combat stories together into his book "Packs On! Memoirs of the Mountain Division in WWII". The author is one of the more prolific chroniclers of WWII history and this book may be his best to date. The Foreword is written by Senator Bob Dole and adds a real touch of class to the telling of this unit.

Feur takes us through the unit's campaigns after a well written introduction that gives us insights on the way the unit was put together and how they trained. He then takes us to Alaska and the Kiska Campaign. That campaign turned out to be a fight for an island that the Japanese had already abandoned and left. There were causalities and deaths due to "friendly fire" in the fog and the confusion of the battle that had no opposing forces.

We follow the unit onward to Italy and Europe and into the mountains and snow. The author allows us to see each battle area through the eyes of the different veterans who wrote their memories of the events. This enhances the story telling format and enriches the final over-all story of the unit. The many different and diverse voices make the book entertaining as well as educational. It feels more personal then any straight telling of historic events would have. Feur expertly weaves all these individual stories together and connects them with facts, data, maps and old photos to make this whole book a first class reading experience.

This is book captures the essence of what this unit was all about. The author realizes that strength of this story was to allow the men who were there to tell it--and he does that well! The Military Writer's Society of America gives this book its highest rating of

A selection of personal photographs, useful maps, and a timeline allow the reader to follow the progress of the 10th in Italy. In addition to combat accounts, readers will find reference to the harsh realities of war, including friendly fire, dead American soldiers used for target practice, and the vengeful shooting of German prisoners.

                        Book Description

George Perkins Marsh (1801-1882) was the first to reveal the menace of environmental misuse, to explain its causes, and to prescribe reforms. David Lowenthal here offers fresh insights, from new sources, into Marsh's career and shows his relevance today, in a book which has its roots in but wholly supersedes Lowenthal's earlier biography George Perkins Marsh: Versatile Vermonter (1958). Marsh's devotion to the repair of nature, to the concerns of working people, to women's rights, and to historical stewardship resonate more than ever. His Vermont birthplace is now a national park chronicling American conservation, and the crusade he launched is now global.

Marsh's seminal book Man and Nature is famed for its ecological acumen. The clue to its inception lies in Marsh's many-sided engagement in the life of his time. The broadest scholar of his day, he was an acclaimed linguist, lawyer, congressman, and renowned diplomat who served 25 years as U.S. envoy to Turkey and to Italy. He helped found and guide the Smithsonian Institution, shaped the Washington Monument, penned potent tracts on fisheries and on irrigation, spearheaded public science, art, and architecture. He wrote on camels and corporate corruption, Icelandic grammar and Alpine glaciers. His pungent and provocative letters illuminate life on both sides of the Atlantic.

Like Darwin's Origin of Species, Marsh's Man and Nature marked the inception of a truly modern way of looking at the world, of taking care lest we irreversibly degrade the fabric of humanized nature we are bound to manage. Marsh's ominous warnings inspired reforestation, watershed management, soil conservation, and nature protection in his day and ours.

George Perkings Marsh: Prophet of Conservation was awarded the Association for American Geographers' 2000 J. B. Jackson Prize. The book was also on the shortlist for the first British Academy Book Prize, awarded in December 2001.
