More than 45 years ago, then Senator John F. Kennedy challenged Americans to willingly serve their countryto give two years of their life to the service of others and, without hesitation, Americans rose to his challenge. Since the Peace Corps' beginnings in 1961, more than 180,000 have served as Volunteers. The mission of the Peace Corps is to help the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women; to help promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served; to help promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans. The Peace Corps was officially established on March 1, 1961 with the number of volunteers and trainees to date totaling 182,000, and the total number of countries served now at 138. There are currently 7810 volunteers and trainees, with these statistics: gender: 58% female, 42% male; marital status: 91% single, 9% married; minorities: 16% of volunteers; age: average-28 years old; median-25 years old; volunteers over 50: 6% of volunteers; oldest volunteer is 79.
President John F. Kennedy: February 21, 1961 "I hope that when the Peace Corps ultimately is organized, and young men and women go out around the world, that they will place their greatest emphasis on teaching; and secondly, that they will learn themselves far more than they will teach, and that we will therefore have another link which binds us to the world around us." Remarks to delegates to a Youth Fitness Conference
March 1, 1961 "Life in the Peace Corps will not be easy. There will be no salary and allowances will be at a level sufficient only to maintain health and meet basic needs. Men and women will be expected to work and live alongside the nationals of the country in which they are stationed - doing the same work, eating the same food, talking the same language. But if the life will not be easy, it will be rich and satisfying. For every young American who participates in the Peace Corps - who works in a foreign land - will know that he or she is sharing in the great common task of bringing to man that decent way of life which is the foundation of freedom and a condition of peace." Statement upon signing Executive Order 10924 establishing the Peace Corps

George Perkins Marsh: Prophet of Conservation (Weyerhaeuser Environmental Books)
David Lowenthal Manufacturer: University of Washington Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0295983159 |
Book Description
George Perkins Marsh (1801-1882) was the first to reveal the menace of environmental misuse, to explain its causes, and to prescribe reforms. David Lowenthal here offers fresh insights, from new sources, into Marsh's career and shows his relevance today, in a book which has its roots in but wholly supersedes Lowenthal's earlier biography George Perkins Marsh: Versatile Vermonter (1958). Marsh's devotion to the repair of nature, to the concerns of working people, to women's rights, and to historical stewardship resonate more than ever. His Vermont birthplace is now a national park chronicling American conservation, and the crusade he launched is now global.Marsh's seminal book Man and Nature is famed for its ecological acumen. The clue to its inception lies in Marsh's many-sided engagement in the life of his time. The broadest scholar of his day, he was an acclaimed linguist, lawyer, congressman, and renowned diplomat who served 25 years as U.S. envoy to Turkey and to Italy. He helped found and guide the Smithsonian Institution, shaped the Washington Monument, penned potent tracts on fisheries and on irrigation, spearheaded public science, art, and architecture. He wrote on camels and corporate corruption, Icelandic grammar and Alpine glaciers. His pungent and provocative letters illuminate life on both sides of the Atlantic.
Like Darwin's Origin of Species, Marsh's Man and Nature marked the inception of a truly modern way of looking at the world, of taking care lest we irreversibly degrade the fabric of humanized nature we are bound to manage. Marsh's ominous warnings inspired reforestation, watershed management, soil conservation, and nature protection in his day and ours.
George Perkings Marsh: Prophet of Conservation was awarded the Association for American Geographers' 2000 J. B. Jackson Prize. The book was also on the shortlist for the first British Academy Book Prize, awarded in December 2001.
