Book Description

As a child in German-occupied Poland, Roma Ligocka was known for the bright strawberry-red coat she wore against a tide of gathering darkness. Fifty years later, Roma, an artist living in Germany, attended a screening of Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List, and instantly knew that “the girl in the red coat”—the only splash of color in the film—was her. Thus began a harrowing journey into the past, as Roma Ligocka sought to reclaim her life and put together the pieces of a shattered childhood.

The result is this remarkable memoir, a fifty-year chronicle of survival and its aftermath. With brutal honesty, Ligocka recollects a childhood at the heart of evil: the flashing black boots, the sudden executions, her mother weeping, her father vanished…then her own harrowing escape and the strange twists of fate that allowed her to live on into the haunted years after the war. Powerful, lyrical, and unique among Holocaust memoirs, The Girl in the Red Coat eloquently explores the power of evil to twist our lives long after we have survived it. It is a story for anyone who has ever known the darkness of an unbearable past—and searched for the courage to move forward into the light.

3 out of 5 stars The Girl in the Red Coat.......2007-02-14

Ligocka writes an unusal Holocaust memoir. She writes about her entire life and how the Holocaust affected her. The most intriquing and exciting part of the book deals with Ligocka's childhood. Many people helped Roma and her mother survive by hiding them and providing shelter for them during the war. Roma recalls childhood friends and relatives (including Roman Polanski).
Roma's adult life was not perfect. She mad some bad choices and lived with the consequences. A very interesting life, indeed.

1 out of 5 stars A book of vanity.......2005-07-14

I have read hundreds of books about those who survived the holocaust but this is one book I cannot recommend. Although you get a glimpse of what life during the holocaust may have been like, you unfortunately get too many glimpses of a woman who thrives on vanity. Throughout the book, Roma time and time again stresses how pretty she was and how many men wanted to marry her. Roma is a woman who you cannot come to care about as she cares so much about herself but not in the way of her survival but instead her looks.

5 out of 5 stars great.......2004-05-15

I thought that this book was very good. It was very interesting, and kept getting better. I thought her failed marraiges, addiction to anit-depressants (I think it was), and an abortion, and more were very interesting. Not something I have ever read from a Holocaust survivor. And I have read a lot of books on the holocaust. This is definitly a book that proves that holocaust survivors are humans too, that make mistakes and aren't perfect or born with a hallow on their head.

5 out of 5 stars She provides testimony.......2003-03-17

While I still don't know why some people survived the Holocaust and others didn't, I do know why Roma Ligocka survived: she provides testimony.

Her story begins as a toddler tells her tale of fear in the Krakow Ghetto. Scarcely more than an infant when the Jews were forced to wear Jewish stars on their clothing, she absolutely knew no other way of life. When an aunt said that she'd have men at her feet because of her beauty, she wondered if they'd be dead; that's what she knew.

She watched the snatching of her grandmother before her very eyes, as she hid under a table. Her father was forced to go to Auschwitz. Her mother begged for places for them to stay throughout the war.

The first half of the book deals with Roma's life before the end of the war. The second half deals with her life after the war: how events, seemingly minor, during the war, left permanent scars in her mind.

While this memoir deals with topics such as depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, failed marriages, show business, prejudice, and addiction, this is not a book ABOUT those topics. This is a book about a woman who saw "Schindler's List" and recognized herself and her family as subjects, and who had the courage to reflect, document, and move on. This is a story of survival.

5 out of 5 stars I read it all in one sitting.......2002-12-26

A very moving book. I've read many books about the Holocaust. However, I don't think I previously read one that was written by someone who was so young during the war and that focused so much on the author's adult life. Even though intellectually one knows that war scars a soul forever, living the aftereffects through a single individual's perspective is emotionally stunning. Highly recommended.

              Book Description

William James's Naval History is one of the most valuable works in the English language on the operation of the Royal Navy during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. James corresponded widely with the survivors of the events he describes. By carefully evaluating and balancing conflicting reports and testimonies, he achieved an accuracy often lacking in later studies.

The original five volumes were published in 1822-24, with a six-volume edition appearing in 1826. Previously, the work has only been available to scholars through specialist libraries. This new hardcover edition, with an introduction by the noted naval historian Andrew Lambert as well as an index for each volume, provides both scholars and maritime enthusiasts an accessible and affordable edition of this important work. Illustrated with charts, diagrams, and images, the work remains an essential source for all those who are interested in the operation of the Royal Navy in this period.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Essential history of the era.......2007-03-18

This history, first published in the early 19th century, has recently been reprinted. It has been used as a source by many present day writers for novels set during the time period covered. The author was a historian who wrote about events as they occurred. In one case he was badly beaten in his home by a Royal Navy captain who was displeased by what he had written. The history is written as a narrative account, running chronologically through each year. It tends to jump from location to location as you change paragraphs. There are not chapters as such, just a chronological account for each year. It was published in six volumes, and each volume of the reprinted history has an introduction, appendix and index.

There are a sprinkling of tables and diagrams in the book, although not very many diagrams. Some are of particular interest. For example, at the beginning of 1798 the Royal Navy had 24 admirals, 36 vice admirals, 44 rear admirals, and 26 superannuated rear admirals (retired). There were 518 post captains on the active duty list, and 20 superannuated captains. Some of these, like Admiral Jervis, are well remembered. Most have faded into obscurity. One had to reach the top of the captain's list to become an admiral, a process that usually required over 20 years if the man survived from perils of war, shipwreck, disease, or just old age.

Some naval actions are covered in great detail. Others only receive a passing reference. It is a useful reference if you are reading novels set during the period, and you wish to read the account of the actual event. Individual volumes are sold separately.

This workbook for human and planetary survival is based upon a resonant field paradigm that transcends the Newtonian materialistic model. Argüelles, the author of The Mayan Factor, postulates a planetary design that envisions the evolving field of Earth in relation to the galactic whole.

              5 out of 5 stars Transformative!.......2005-11-21

Likely to prove the most important book ever published. Imagine Plato's Timaeus updated for the information age with full-page illustrations & graphs & you have a good idea of Earth Ascending.
Unifying cultural artifacts from around the world in a whole-systems perspective, Earth Ascending offers the possiblility of transformation from a planet of war and misunderstanding, to a single unified Earth.
It is highly doubtful that the mayan-calendar / 2012 movement would have progressed beyond such mundane topics as GMT correlations and mushroom-induced fantasies if not for this incredibly illuminating textbook on the re-orientation of the human mind & the return of the psyche to its natural state of harmony.
highest possible recommendation for all earthlings.

5 out of 5 stars Most seminal book published in the 20th century.......1999-01-01

EARTH ASCENDING illustrates the mathematical correlations of the binary computer code, the I Ching hexagrams, Ben Franklin's magic square, the DNA code, the Mayan Sacred Calendar, the fluxuations of the Van Allen radiation belt, historical epocs, pristine civilizations, the terrestial seasons, and the governing geomagnetic features of the planet, among others. The author's noetic vision has a density like Mahler's music and Finnegans Wake. This reviewer dares venture that it will prove to be the single most seminal book published in the 20th century. Do yourself a favor: buy it, read it, let yourself be enlightened by it. Not to know it is a sign of intellectual backwardness. Not to ponder it is to walk in spiritual darkness. Not to own it is a mark of cultural poverty.

5 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS DOPE!.......1998-08-27

I read this book when it first came out, and it's the bomb!

If you liked that movie PI, you should peep this.

It looks into the cybernetic feedback loop between the microcosm and the macrocosm/art and nature.

It looks into the way humans transpose microcosmic "pure" math onto nature in order to better understand chaotic macrocosmic natural systems.

for example he corralates the I Ching Hexagrams, Binary computer code, DNA, and the polarization fluxuations of the Van Allen Radiation belt.

It has kind of a steep curve at first, but once you get it, the book is very profound.

"Oppenheim's treatise...is an outstanding work on international law not only from the point of view of its content, scope, authoritativeness and up-to-date character, but from the point of view of its adaptability and usefulness for the purpose of study and consultation.": V.R.I, Law Quarterly Review (1922) 52: 139-140.

              Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars WARNING - not the latest edition.......2006-08-15

Before you spend $250 on what at first glance might appear to be a new edition of Oppenheim, be aware that this is reprint of the 3rd edition (the last one written by Oppenheim himself), which came out in the first part of the 20th century (can't remember the exact date; after 1912 but before 1940). This is NOT a new edition.

The most recent edition is the 9th, of Part 1 only, edited by Sir Robert Jennings and Sir Arthur Watts in 1992. The most recent edition of Part 2 is the 7th, edited by Hersch Lauterpacht in the 1950s. If you want the most recent editions of Oppenheim's International Law, those are the ones to get, not this one.

Having given this general warning, I grant that Oppenheim's International Law remains one of the classics of the field and is one of the most authoritative sources, if a little dated. It is well organized and relatively easy to read.

                      5 out of 5 stars Excellent reading.......2004-07-20

The reader of the cassette tape version of *Treatise on Law* does an excellent job--well-paced, clear, and natural-sounding (as natural as a medieval philosopher can be made to sound!). I listened to this a few times while commuting. That's not easy to do as the book is rather dense, and I would not recommend doing that unless you already have some familiarity with subject matter. There is one thing that makes putting Aquinas's *Summa Theologica* on tape particularly unwieldy: the objections are all stated, followed by the responsio, and then the replies. By the time you get to the replies you will probably have forgotten which objection was which, and the context of the replies does not always make this clear. I rate the production 5 stars nonetheless, because I think it would probably be taking too great of inappropriate editorial liberties to group objections with replies together--even though this would probably make them easier to understand. Obviously, you should have a copy of the text to refer to when you get home; then you can sort out confusions.

Anyone who gives classics like this fewer than 5 stars on grounds of the content of the works is being silly. I give the production itself 5 stars as well.

5 out of 5 stars A Seminal Work in the History of Natural Law.......1999-12-12

Admitedly a difficult work to read, Thomas Aquinus' Treatise on Law is well worth the effort. Its difficulty stems from the strictures of its genre-- the scholastic method of dispution, important in the devolpement of modern critical thinking. The treatise is a rich work that seeks to probe the limits of human ethical knowledge. He asks us to consider the questions "what are my rights, how can I know and guarantee them, what are the limits of the state in relation to the individual." If you've ever pondered the meaning of the words "we hold these truths to be self-evident" in the Declaration of Independence, start with this book. Aquinus has few peers in his understanding of what it means to be a human-being. Agree or disagree with him, Aquinus' vision of a universe whose very fabric both constitutes and guarantees a moral order is deeply moving and ennobling. No less a person than the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King acknowledged in his Letter from a Birmingham Jail his debt to the Treatise on Law. If you love freedom, read this book!

1 out of 5 stars Thomas Aquinas knows his stuff........1999-05-17

Thomas Aquinas knows his stuff. If you find discussions on the essence of goodness or talk of why all things act as agents to a good to be of any use then Aquinas is an absorbing read. If you find this kind of cavilling to be invigorating you are a dullard and are in Good company with Aquinas.

5 out of 5 stars As true today as it was in the 13th Century.......1999-01-21

The treatise on law provides a concise definition of law, a fabulous discussion of natural law, and a view into the inner working of our own human law. A must for lawyers and legislators.

                          Book Description

Since its first appearance in 1986 this book has won uniform praise from many of the world's leading comparatists, has been acclaimed by senior judges and has been cited by the courts of many countries. This new edition of the work, substantially re-written and systematically up-dated, contains over 150 leading judgments, most translated in their entirety, along with references to over 2000 other decisions from Germany and the Common law world. While the book remains an ideal tool for teaching comparative torts and comparative methodology, the fact that it has been extensively rewritten and enlarged now also makes it an indispensable source of inspiration for those with a professional interest in tort litigation and tort reform.

Topics discussed include economic loss, psychiatric injury, wrongful birth, life and sterilisation cases, products liability, traffic accidents, accidents at work, environmental liability and compensation for personal injuries and death.

                              Book Description

Getting out into the great outdoors is now even easier than before! More than one million acres, virtually unknown and untapped, are available for a wide variety of activities. With 97 percent of Texas lands in the hands of private ownership, the state's 51 wildlife management areas provide unique opportunities for those who want to get close to nature.

This book gives detailed descriptions of each area, including locator maps, history, recreational activities, available facilities (including wheelchair accessibility), wildlife, habitat, and contact information. It also includes expert advice from wildlife biologists on hunting, fishing, and wildlife viewing for each diverse area, as well as tips for some of the best birding, camping, hiking, biking, and horseback riding to be found in the great outdoors. Like its companion book, The Official Guide to Texas State Parks, the WMAs are grouped into seven geographic regions—Big Bend Country, Gulf Coast, Hill Country, Panhandle Plains, Pineywoods, Prairies and Lakes, and the South Texas Plains. Beautiful photographs and user-friendly information make this book a must for long-time nature lovers and novice explorers alike.
