A NON-fictional account of TRUE street"gangsta" life.......2007-09-24
Unlike,the fabricated tales of these so-called"gangsta rappers"(better known,as"STUDIO-gangstas'in the hoods of Detroit)this book tells of the REAL-deal,of street hustlin,along with the not-so glamorous consequences'of life in the"game"...If you're looking for a bunch,of gangsta "fairytales"like T.I. and a lot of other rappers' from the "Dirty South"(better known as the"Downy-Soft"by those in Detroit,who,KNOW,that,Atlanta,Memphis,and New Orleans,are "SOFTER"than pharmacy cotton.and "SWEETER"than a bake-sale!!)like to spit out,then,this book,is not fo you!!As,a lifetime Detroiter,I personally knew about how "Out-cold"the Young Boys were,and,I also knew,that wandering over,into their hood,was a DANGEROUS move,to say the least!!These cats had,MUCH respect,from one corner of tha"D"to the other!!
The Autobiography of Butch Jones Y.B.I. Young Boys Inc........2007-01-29
I enjoyed reading this book. I know some of the people that are mentioned in the book and I can recall when all of this was going on. I now have a vision of what happened from the inside out and why things went down the way they did,as was viewed by Butch himself. I reccommened parents of all urban youth to get a copy of this book and let their offspring read and educate them on the pitfalls of the BIG MONEY, DRUG SELLING LIFESTYLE.
wonderful.......2006-03-08
I have yet to read the book but i am planning on it very soon. I am 39 and i not only lived in detroit during that time, but i was indirectly associated with several members of the group. I am proud and glad to see butch turn things around and tell this story. I am hoping that so called "tough guys " read this book and learn from it, learn ! I am in a carrer where i try to help young people overcome mental health issues and problems in the streets and in the homes. Because of my past it;s easier to connect with these children. This book is another step in continuing to open the eyes of our kids. Thanks.
this book is a certified pageturner`.......2005-12-31
I am proud of the way Butch made all that money from the streets and while doing it, he exposes the hypocrisy of the government that tries to bring him down. they charge him with running a criminal enterprise, yet the government controls liquor, "pharmacueticals", and cigarettes which is equally or more damaging than heroine. This was a story was really one of the best books Ive ever read, honestly....because its based on a true story. Someone needs to make a movie out of this quick!!! I wonder who would play Butch....
Been there done that........2005-09-29
I read this book twice when it first came out. I remember those days like it was last week. Now that I'm 33, I try to tell my Kids how it used to be in the days of Y.B.I. , Young Gunz, and the Chamber Brothers. I still sport my Black and Green gear once in awhile just for the memories. My Crew was located about ten miles south of Detroit, and this book tells it like it is. I'm going to buy another copy of it so I can show my Kids why they need to stay off that path. Like another reader responded, I lost my Brother and a few close Friends to the game.
Book Description
From the end of the second century A.D., the Roman Empire was beset by internal unrest, revolts, usurpations, civil wars, and attacks along its far-flung frontiers. This stimulating book is the first comprehensive discussion of how the Roman army adapted itself to these growing threats and how effective it was in combating serious problems-sometimes several at once-during the late imperial period.
Customer Reviews:
A very useful book.......2004-11-17
If you're looking for a detailed overview of the development of the Roman army from the third century through the end of the fifth century, look no further. This period saw the transformation of the Roman army from its classical infantry-dominated form to a cavalry-heavy precursor of medieval armies. It also witnessed a shift in strategy from frontier defense, to defense-in-depth. This book covers both of these trends in great detail. It offers a narrative history of the troubled third century, the reforming reigns of Diocletian and Constantine, and the barbarization of the army during the fifth century, quoting numerous ancient sources including Ammianus, Zosimus, Vegetius, Procopius, and others. It supplements this with archaeological data, maps, architectural schemes, and plates.
Most useful is the thorough description of the arms, armor, and clothing worn by the Roman soldier during this period, coupled with photos of surviving bits of armor, helmets, swords, belts, etc. The authors also provide an excellent overview of how the dramatic changes in Roman society, economy, and law during this period affected the army.
In conclusion, I found this to be an extremely useful book and recommend it highly. It will be especially useful as an introduction for serious students to Roman military history.
Book Description
The twilight of the Roman Empire saw a revolution in the way war was waged. The drilled infantryman, who had been the mainstay of Mediterranean armies since the days of the Greek hoplite, was gradually replaced by the mounted warrior. This change did not take place overnight, and in the 3rd and 4th centuries the role of the cavalryman was primarily to support the infantry. However, by the time of the 6th century, the situation had been completely reversed. Late Roman Cavalryman gives a full account of the changing experience of the mounted soldiers who defended Rome's withering western empire.

Arthur's Warriors?.......2007-03-29
This book, like most Osprey books, was filled with detailed information and excellent plates by Christa Hook. As I read it, I could not help but wonder if, assuming the legendary 'Arthur' was real, these are what his 'knights' would have looked like.
Spanglenhelms, Cataphracts, Spathas..........2005-09-20
I love this series and its publisher, Osprey. Only the British can put out such quality. Besides the excellently detailed plates, each book in this series gives an historical overview of the subject's time period.
I've always been fascinated by the Roman Empire, particularly the later Christian period. This book (and its companion, LATE ROMAN INFANTRYMAN AD 236-565) shows the influence of Germanic and Iranian styles, weaponry and tactics which not only transformed Rome's military but also layed the foundation for the development of the medieval knight.
Be sure to purchase both books together.
Excellent overview.......2004-08-01
I had previously been disappointed by Osprey's "Romano-Byzantine Armies 4th-9th Centuries," and was therefore hesitant to purchase any more of their books. This book changed my opinion of the quality of Osprey's titles. It is a well-conceived overview of the the Late Roman cavalry, examining its transformation from an auxiliary force to the core of the Justinianic Roman army. The numerous black & white photos of contemporary art and artifacts depicting arms, armor and cavalry soldiers in various states of activity help bring to life the text which is well-written and lifely.
Of particular note are the beautiful color plates done by Christa Hook. They are attractively done with tremendous attention to detail. My personal favorite is a scene of Roman medicine being practiced on three injured soldiers. This scene is taken directly from an account in Procopius where the procedure is described in some detail.
All in all, I can't recommend this book highly enough. It is especially useful for those with little to no knowledge of the period who are looking for a quick overview. The bibliography is also very useful and much appreciated.
Late Roman Cavalryman 236-565 Ad.......2000-10-25
Another valuable addition to the Osprey Warrior Series. Most of the books written about Roman armies usually concentrated on the famous Roman infantry -"Roman Legions". The Roman cavalry is usually considered as an auxiliary and being ignored or only briefly mentioned. However, this book is specially written about Roman calvary. It gives readers an insight into Roman's calvary. Roman cavalry's formations, tactics and warfare are studied in detail. As tradition of Osprey military books, a section of full color illustrations is offered. These color illustrations are beautiful and, as realistic as possible, depicting the appearance and equipments of the late Roman cavalry. This book is informative. I recommend this book to anyone who is into military warfare, especially for those interested in Roman armies

This work is really just a preface for a book on the subject.......2001-11-11
(...)I found nothing compelling in the 51 pages of this book, no photos, no new bibliographic finds, no unusual insights, the footnotes are not bad. I was very disappointed in this work, and very happy I bought it at Amazon, where I didn't have to get angry at myself for paying full price for a book that may not even go in my library!
Yes, it is "concise"... 'nuff said!
Give this a miss and invest your research dollars elsewhere!
Lack of substance.......2001-06-07
This book lacks any substance whatsoever. It is not original in any way, shape or form. It continually states the obvious and leaves one wondering why it was written. All the material can be gained by reading AHM Jones' "The Later Roman Empire" or any other of the books listed in the bibliography. This is a book that may be useful to undergratuates at best.
Satisfying.......2000-12-08
This is a very concise work. For once a historian has written a book that looks at the possible reasons why the Western Roman Empire didn't survive and the Eastern half did. Instead of brushing over the topic with the usual cliches Cromwell actually looks at the possibilities in depth. For too many years I've only been able to find brushovers on this time period. Cromwell takes it on directly and in doing so fills in a rather mysterious era. This is a short work, but it dosen't leave the reader feeling shorted. It belongs in all history buff's libraries be it Roman, military history or both.
Excellent for the Military History Buff.......1998-07-06
A serious book that is detailed yet consise. A must read book for someone that is interested in Roman history!

Book Description
This encyclopedic book provides comprehensive data about Soviet and Russian strategic weapons, payloads, and delivery systems and on the nuclear complex that supports them. The data are drawn from open, primarily Russian sources. All the information is presented chronologically, arranged by individual systems and facilities, and is not available elsewhere in a single volume.
Following an overview of the history of Soviet strategic forces, the book discusses the structure of the political and military leadership in the Soviet Union and Russia, the structure of the Russian military and military industry, nuclear planning procedures, and the structure of the command and control system. It describes the nuclear warhead production complex and the Soviet nuclear weapon development program. It then focuses on the individual services that constitute the so-called strategic triad -- land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles, the strategic submarine fleet, and strategic aviation. It presents an overview of Soviet strategic defense, including air defense systems, the Moscow missile defense system, the radar and space-based early warning networks, and the space surveillance system. The book also includes a description of the Soviet nuclear testing program, including information on test sites and on all Soviet nuclear tests and peaceful nuclear explosions. It concludes with a look at the future of strategic nuclear weapons in Russia.
Customer Reviews:
Russian Nuclear Power.......2006-09-04
Nuclear forces, like other branches of the military, are divided into two categories: Tactical and strategic. Strategic division of the nuclear forces covers the armaments that have a wider scope of effect. These are the forces that have kept the MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction) balance between the superpowers so far. Strategic nuclear forces have air, land and submarine launch capability of nuclear warheads targeted for intercontinental targets.
This book covers every aspect of the Russian Strategic Nuclear Forces from the very beginnings up to post-Soviet restructuring. It covers detailed development phases of strategic bombers, land-based launch platforms and the submarine leg of the nuclear triad. There are detailed data on the organization of the nuclear command, early warning systems and launch protocols. There are also detailed data on the Soviet/Russian nuclear complex and their products. At the end of the book, there is a long list of the nuclear tests undertaken by Russia.
All in all, this book should be read and kept as a reference by all those who want to have a well-balanced look at the Russian Nuclear Strategic Command's capabilities and importance. Readers of this book will appreciate why the latest efforts by the United States for a missile defense system will be highly counter-productive.
Comrade - Good information about the Empire's Nukes!.......2006-03-26
Mr. Podvig's book, "Russian Strategic Nuclear Forces," is an excellent unclassified look into the world of Russian/Soviet nuclear weapons. The book covers weapon systems, facilities and nuclear tests since the dawn of their nuclear age. The diagrams and tables are clear and concise.
This book was very helpful in allowing an individual to quickly memorize (or 'compare and contrast') different missile ranges and warhead yields. Very useful if briefing American missile combat crews on potential nuclear threats, or if writing 'peace-nik' papers on the evils of nuclear weapons. Honestly, I don't care what your bent is - if you want to know about nukes, this book needs to be added to your library.
A bit disappointing.......2005-10-16
This book is interesting in some ways but heavily focused on facilities and process rather than the history of development of some of the critical technologies. A good reference but a bit disappointing.
For most readers interested in Soviet missile development I would recommend Zaloga's The Kremlin's Nuclear Sword: The Rise and Fall of Russia's Strategic Nuclear Forces. Covers some of the early debates on missile development and strategy, with special emphasis on competition between the design bureaus.
Note that both of these books only focuses on Strategic missiles, as their titles certainly acknowledge, so there is little detail on short and intermediate range missiles except for the earliest missiles such as the SS-3 and SS-4. If you are looking for Scud information you won't find it here unless you are looking for the submarine launched version.
Highly detailed material.......2003-11-18
This is an amazing book about the history, design, strategies and current state of the Russian nuclear forces. There was not a single detail I didn't found in this fascinating material. The chapter about the process for veryfing an incoming attack and launching a response is really good.
Very technical, but a treasure trove of accurate information.......2002-07-30
This is not an easy-reading book, but if you desire to know the smaller details of the history, development, design, construction, and strategy of the Soviet and current Russian strategic forces, without conjecture and without fluff, this is your book. If you can or wish to coherently discourse on the design differences between the Soviet R-36 and R-36M2 second stage and other such details, this one's for you. Highly recommended.

Book Description
Christoph Bluth presents an original analysis of the buildup of strategic forces from the death of Stalin to the SALT I agreement. The author outlines Soviet strategic arms policy, identifies the principal interest groups involved, and studies a number of critical decisions taken in relation to strategic bombers, ICBMs, strategic nuclear forces based at sea, ballistic missile defense, and the military uses of space. As well as examining external threat assessment and wider foreign policy, the author pays particular attention to the role of domestic factors such as Khrushchev's endeavors to shift resources away from military industries to agriculture and consumer goods production. Therefore he is able to demonstrate how domestic priorities and internal power struggles account for the seeming inconsistencies of Soviet military and foreign policy.

From the supplier: The state of Russia's strategic readiness continues to decline due to a lack of financial and resource commitments. Furthermore, troop training and equipment maintenance have not been given high priority status. By the end of 1998, 756 intercontinental ballistic missiles were located at 19 bases in Russia. The government has announced its plan to produce between 160 and 220 Topol M SS-27s by the end of 2004. The country's nuclear powered ballistic submarines are only part of the Northern and Pacific fleets with only three bases maintaining operational SSBNs. There are 70 strategic bombers, but a lack in funding has prevented them some of them from being operational.

Stokes Purple Martin Book.......2007-07-25
This is an excellent book. It's very informative. This is my first year to put up a Martin House. I learned a lot from reading this book.
Purple Martins.......2007-05-29
An excellent book with suggestions on how to attract and keep martins in your backyard.
Landord-ism 101.......2007-02-26
Twenty years ago the air above the narrow street outside our little row house in Costa Rica used to teem with swallows dashing about in the later afternoon coolness. I loved to watch their antics, finding in their effortless twists and turns a vicarious agility.
When we moved house and the swallows were no longer part of our end-of-day joys, I knew that I must someday remedy this situation by having a Purple Martin house that would persuade the similar martins to take us into their company.
It's March, 2007 in Indianapolis and a late snow lies on the ground. The Martins will be here within weeks if prognostications are accurate. From the comfort of my easy chair and a laptop bookmarked to several vendors of Purple Martin houses, I've read through the excellent Stokes Guide.
These people have a rare gift for understanding the bird in question but also for speaking to the level of the interested, reasonably intelligent novice, a reader who knows very little of the topic but is capable of getting up to speed with just a little help.
That assistance comes in the form of inviting prose and beautiful photos, all presented in an affordable format.
I know a whole lot more about Purple Martins than I did just an hour ago and am just about to order that house and telescoping pole. Heck, this frozen ground can't last forever and those newbie Martins will be looking for a place to call home.
We'll leave the light on.
Everything I wanted to know about attracting Purple Martins!.......2002-01-15
My husband and I invested in a Purple Martin House, but didn't have a clue how to entice them to our back yard! I have several of the Stokes bird books and have always found them informative, easy to use, and excellent photography. I found all of this to be true in their Purple Martin Book. The book starts with Purple Martin basics, how to attract, and something I hadn't even thought of, when to expect their arrival. Each section of their breeding range has a different date, the Gulf Coast being approximately Feb. 1st, so I need to get ready in a hurry! Also covered, is their behavior, selecting housing, egg laying to leaving the nest. Dealing with predators and parasites. I don't think there was a "stone uncovered"!If you just enjoy learning about birds, this book is a joy. For me, I am hoping in a few short weeks, I'll be a Purple Martin landlord!
An essential book for Purple Martin landlords.......2000-08-12
Educate yourself before you buy a Purple Martin house. Reading this book is a great beginning. Many houses sold are not suitable and you will end up with a sparrow house. The Stokes have thorough information and nice photographs in their book. I also recommend you join the PMCA (Purple Martin Conservation Association), Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, Edinboro, PA, 16444 if you are serious about being a martin landlord.
