Book Description

Tony Dungy's words and example have intrigued millions of people, particularly following his victory in Super Bowl XLI, the first for an African American coach. How is it possible for a coach--especially a football coach--to win the respect of his players and lead them to the Super Bowl without the screaming histrionics, the profanities, the demand that the sport come before anything else? How is it possible for anyone to be successful without compromising faith and family? In this inspiring and reflective memoir, Coach Dungy tells the story of a life lived for God and family--and challenges us all to redefine our ideas of what it means to succeed. Includes a foreword by Denzel Washington and a 16-page color photo insert.

A great book for those interested in Professional Sports such as Football as well as having an uplifting message especially how Coach Dungy and his wife were able to overcome their son's suicide .

In addition, shows that nice guys do not always have to finish last .

5 out of 5 stars Insight.......2007-10-11

This book gives a look at the who and the how of a person.
I like people who don't let life control them.
They control their life by looking beyond what is, to what isn't seen but felt.

5 out of 5 stars A Life changing book!.......2007-10-10

A great read! Very inspirational! A must read for all football fans. Tony Dungy is living proof that good guys can finish first. It just goes to show you that it pays to do things the right way and to treat people with respect.

This was an excellent book. It showed how ones spiritual beliefs can guide you through our daily lives both in good and and bad.

It gave great insight to how and why the Indianapolis Colts football team is managed and what their priorities are in regard to player selection and weekly stradagy.

And finally, Tony presents his philosophy on how trying to do the "right thing" in all situations leaves you with few regrets.

A Tender Story of Faith and Love From Janette Oke

Countless fans of Christian fiction like you were thrilled when Janette Oke released her new series, A PRAIRIE LEGACY. Readers have been rewarded with a touching exploration of the feelings and thoughts of young Virginia Simpson as she grows to be a woman. Now with A Quiet Strength, bestselling author Janette Oke continues Virginia's tale with a heartwarming, romantic novel that mothers and daughters everywhere will love.

Virginia Simpson has learned that grandma Marty was right to insist that when God allows something to be taken from you, he replaces it with something better. The return of Jonathan, their renewed courtship, and the upcoming wedding are all shining examples of that. Still though, the trials and disappointments of Virginia's life weigh heavily on her and the inner strength that has continued to build in her is far from completion.

The first test of her new resolve comes soon after her marriage. Waiting for their house to be completed, the couple has no choice but to live with Jonathan's grandmother. Although Virginia loves the woman, she struggles with having to share her new husband's time. When the house is completed, even greater obstacles arise, challenging both the couple's fledgling love as well as Virginia's inner peace. But like gold refined, Virginia will emerge as a woman of character and godliness.

4 out of 5 stars Marriage, Grandmother, Horses and Mindy.......2004-02-10

Virginia is so anxious to be married to Jonathan that she does not fully count the cost. When reality hits her, she is angry and disallusioned. Her home is finally built and just as life looks promising, an old friend drops in and with her a little waif daughter who ends up being Virginia and Jonathan's. Raising horses is risky and not without long hours - again leaving Virginia to fret. With a baby on the way and an wounded child to heal, horses take priority and Virginia loses her perspective on what is really important. The last straw is when Grandmother breaks her leg and must come live with them. Virginia is ready to throw in the towel when she allows God to speak to her heart and she finally listens. She is able to sort between fact and fantasy, romance and committment and wakes to the real reason for being a family. She is changed forever. Another Janette Oke thriller. Off to book 4!

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2000-02-25

I loved the first two books, but this one is the best yet! Virgina has now grown up. At first I was sad that her teen-years adventures were over, but reading about her as an adult has been thrilling. So many things, including an abused child, her own children, a husband, struggles, and her grandmother, happen to her. Through the whole thing she realizes that her relationship with Christ is not what it should be. I think that this book has a great value to it!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2000-02-24

Just like the previous reader, I couldn't put the book down! It was such a wonderful story I only wished that I had read the first two novels! I'm a first time reader to author Jannette Oke and I'm happy that found her! It was wonderfully written and very warming to the heart. I was glad to see Virginia's strength renewed during her toughest times. May God continue to bless Mrs. Oke.

Book Description

On June 15, 1999, Mrs. Rosa Parks was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor -- a tribute to the power of one solitary woman to influence the soul of a nation. But awards and influence were far from her mind when, on December 1, 1955, she refused to move to the back of a city bus in Montgomery, Alabama. She was not trying to start a movement. She was simply tired of social injustice and did not think a woman should be forced to stand so that a man could sit down. Yet her simple act of courage set in motion a chain of events that changed forever the landscape of American race relations. Quiet Strength celebrates the principles and convictions that have guided her through a remarkable life. It is a printed record of her legacy -- her lasting message to a world still struggling to live in harmony.

2 out of 5 stars Rosa was better than this book.........2006-03-22

A little too quiet. There were some nice insights into an amazing and wonderful woman, but they are scant.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding (and now with a sad epilogue).......2005-11-03

It's amazing: this one courageous woman who simply stood up for her beliefs on December 1, 1955 started one of the largest and most influential civil rights movements in history. This book truly reflects Ms. Parks' in her 'essence.' It is a small collection of her thoughts and experiences. Yet these thoughts convey a very personal and profound impact on anyone reading and meditating on them.
What is sad (as I have noted in my title) is the fact that Ms. Parks recently passed away at age 92, just 9 days before I worte this; her funeral was held today in Detroit. May she rest in peace.

5 out of 5 stars I loved this inspiring book about freedom and courage........1998-11-27

Quiet Strength, by Rosa Parks is an amazing display of one woman's journey to understanding why. Why she and her people needed to justify themselves. Why she had to sit a certain place on a bus. Why she was so tired. Rosa Parks is grounded in her source of Quiet Strength through her relationship with her Creator - God. This relationship has been reinforced by her family and culture. "Love, not fear must be our guide," Rosa states - I would recommend this book to every human being who has a heart and soul.

5 out of 5 stars A Quiet Strength Roars with Astute Wisdom.......2000-11-17

Of all of the meditation books specifically for men, and there really are a number of them, A Quiet Strength is by far my favorite! While it has an issue and meditation for each of the 366 days, I prefer to look up an issue I am dealing with in the index and, every time, I get very pertinent advice. Now and then I leaf quickly through the pages, stopping abruptly and read the section I have stopped on. It always seems to be very pertinent to what is happening in my life at the time. This is well worth the time to search for a copy and encourage (them) to reprint. Your life and those around you will be much the better for it....

5 out of 5 stars The Confident Woman: Finding Quiet Strength in a Turbulent World.......2007-01-18

One of the best books I've ever read!! Our "turbulent world" doesn't lend itself well to finding "quiet strength", but this author has provided great guidance for the process.

5 out of 5 stars A Woman's Perspective.......2000-09-01

This book was excellent for women of any age! I truly related to the scenarios that Ingrid paints, and she has a true knack for writing in a spiritual and uplifting way. As a widow of a pastor, she had a lot to say in regard to dealing with attitude on the single woman's part, the married woman's, and the widow or divorcee. I really feel that this book encouraged and made me rediscover my self-worth and sense of independence. Not only that, but it gave me a challenge on how to focus on work and my life differently. I strong recommend this book to those who are going through any phase of life!

Where can women turn when the demands of schedules and all the accompanying noises crowd our busy days? Where do we go to escape the pressures and mental pollutants of everyday life? People need us. They want us. So much demands our attention so much that we lose both time and desire for quietness. Yet God wants to usher us into His peace and quiet in the exteriors of our lives and in our inner selves.

"Come away," Jesus says. Experiencing God in new, quieter ways begins by learning to still our souls. Answering God's Call to Quiet gives clear and inviting direction for those who long to linger in God's presence and sense His nearness. Neva Coyle shows how even the busiest Christian can incorporate devotional quietness as a part of daily life. Her practical insights and biblical illustrations invite you to discover for yourself the strength found in moments of silence and how you can take that quiet with you into the whole of life.

Designed to fit easily into a busy schedule, day by day this study will help you gain strength and peace by balancing your life with moments of stillness and silence in His presence.

        Book Description

My life has been a testimony to Apostle Paul's letter to James. Paul's call for joy in the face of trials and tribulations seems unusual. However, an examination makes clear that Paul finds joy in the results of tribulations, not in the trials. Difficult times can produce good qualities such as perseverance.

My humble beginning was common for people like me (poor boy from the Projects). I wanted to be a man with a good family and make a positive contribution to society. As a young boy, I never envisioned overcoming extreme shyness or becoming a senior commander in a large police department. I never imagined being the center of a national controversy about the unfair police practice of "Racial Profiling". I did not foresee having to overcome individuals I considered friends, who turned out to be "Negro Judases". I had no idea that I would become the Vice Mayor and a Councilman in the largest predominately African American city in the State of Florida.

I attribute my accomplishments to GOD. "You know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete".

            Book Description

Adolf Hitler enlisted in the Bavarian Army in August 1914 as a war volunteer. Fanatically devoted to the German cause between 1914 and 1918 Hitler served with distinction and sometimes reckless bravery, winning both classes of Iron Cross. Using memoirs, military records, regimental, divisional and official war histories as well as (wherever possible) Hitler's own words, this book seeks to reconstruct a period in his life that has been neglected in the literature. It is also the story of a German regiment (16th Bavarian Reserve Infantry, or List Regiment), which fought in all the main battles on the Western Front. As a frontline soldier Hitler began his 'study' of the black art of propaganda; and, as he himself maintained, the List Regiment provided him with his 'university of life'.

This is not only an account of the fighting, however. Some of the most profound influences on Hitler occurred on home leave or as a result of official wartime propaganda, which he devoured uncritically. His conversion frompassive pathological anti-Semitism began while invalided in Germany in 1916-17. The language of anti-Bolshevik 'Jewish virus' propaganda became Hitler's language, confirmed, as he saw it, by the 'infected' recruits to the List Regiment in 1918.

Hitler is here presented less as the product of high-cultural forces than as an avid reader and gullible consumer of state propaganda, which fed his prejudices. He was a 'good soldier' but also a 'true believer' in fact and practice. It is no exaggeration to say that every military decision made by Hitler between 1939 and 1945 was in some way influenced or colored by his experiences with the List Regiment between 1914 and 1918.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The War and its Influence on Hitler.......2005-09-03

Of the 800 or so German regiments that served on the Western Front during World War I, the 16th Bavarian Reserve Infantry, named the List Regiment after its first commander, had one distinguishing feature. It was the regiment that had Private then Corporal Hitler in its ranks.

It was in the regiment that Hitler claimed he changed from a self-confessed 'weak-kneed cosmopolitan' into an anti-Semite and ardent pan-German nationalist. It was here that he decided he must place his dreams of architectural or artistic glory on hold and instead devote his immediate post-war future to politics. As Hitler claimed, the List Regiment provided him with his University of Life.

It was also here that he developed his understanding of military affairs. In the greatest successes of the regiment, in defensive actions on the Aubers Ridge, Hitler developed that the belief well-entrenched and well-supplied German soldier, suitably motivated and ideologically reinforced was invincible.

It was this kind of belief that led Hitler to many of the decisions he made during the entirely different situations in World War II. But after all, this was his university.

This is a splendid book on describing the war on the Western Front, and how being there influenced Hitler. Highly recommended.

            Book Description

Now doing to IT what the Japanese did to cars, India's rapid emergence as the West's back office, favorite location for white collar jobs and most recently as a hot medical center for Americans needing surgery(!) is shaking up the world.

From CBS's "60 Minutes" to the front cover of BusinessWeek, India is headline news. Not just another argument against exporting jobs to poor countries, Rising Elephant documents the surprising economic power of the world's largest democracy. Could India be the next empire? This is the early scoop on the balance of military and political power for this fast-moving phenomenon.

Ashutosh Sheshabalaya was born in India, educated in India and the US and lives in Europe. This is his first book.

1 out of 5 stars A clumsy collection of quotes from newspapers.......2006-06-16

My oh my, does this book need some editing. It's basically a collection of quotes from newspapers that play up India's prospects in IT and software--that's all. The author conducted absolutely no original research, and resorts to hyperbole to get his point across. Poorly written, jingoistic, and poorly argued, not worth the time or money. Hard to believe Common Courage would publish such an unbalanced work.

How ironic that the first reasoned and comprehensive effort to explain a tectonic shift in the global balance of power, which is now impacting on many lives around the world, is called "India industry propaganda". It is after all tectonic. Ask the US National Intelligence Council on their estimates of the world in 2020, or the many opinion polls (even in the Western world) on this subject ?
This is the very meaning of Rising Elephant.
That the international community means more than just winners for two centuries - with a history of only disturbing the global status quo - but many of whose people cannot accept that unexpected changes can for a change also be positive for humanity.
India is not shaking up the world order because the West likes it, or does not like it; that is irrelevant. India is fulfilling a historical mission, returning to where it was economically before the 19th century, as the source of much that is civilization - why else would half the world "discovered" by the Europeans range from the West Indies to Indonesia, and the native peoples of the Americas be mislabelled "Indians" ? And, along with China, India's rise simply means that the largest chunk of humanity are lifting themselves out of 200 years - just 200 years, one must remember, of being on the losing side of history.
This is important. India, as Rising Elephant shows, means a country with the world's first democracy (and a whole lot of other things) effected in spite of poverty. This alone is a lesson for the world. You don't have to be rich to be just, and this may mean you can be more just if (and when) you become rich (again).
I am a great fan of Ashutosh Sheshabalaya, and follow his writings with a great deal of care.
Ashutosh Sheshsbalaya does not play race. Reviewers who cannot accept his simple defense of India are themselves racist.
It is ironic that two of the key arguments held up by people who call Rising Elephant propaganda have been demolished recently by the book's author.
To learn why India is not going to have a nuclear war, read his piece in Washington's Globalist on Iran and the NPT 2.0. And keep in mind that the biggest part of world's 20,000 nuclear weapons (above all, those in Russia) are targeted not at India or even Pakistan but at the US.
And to learn why India is not succumbing to an AIDS "catastrophe", read his new article at sify.com called AIDS, Indian disasters and Apple II mindsets. Indeed, as he shows, the AIDS "problem" in India happens to be very close to that faced by the US, and 20 times lower than Africa.
Finally, the personal attacks on the author's intellectual and writing capabilities are uncalled for. It may be a good idea to see details of his 'intellectual' background and writing skills at his Website [...]. I doubt if the attackers of what is laughingly claimed to be Indian propaganda are as widely published on as many topics, reviewed in serious newspapers and by academics, and have anything like his College Board rankings or his series of academic scholarships.
To them, I suggest: Read the book again, or buy a dictionary.

1 out of 5 stars Indian Industry Propaganda at its Worst.......2006-06-03

This book is nothing but a self-congratulatory epistle for India written by a man with modest writing and intellectual skills. His constant use of terms like "massive" and "huge" when describing increases in business volumes, his complete lack of significant or comparative statistics and his untamed proclivity for hyperbole leaves the reader both bored and breathless. The tale brings to mind the threats, twenty years ago, that Japan would "buy the United States and rent it back to us." That "miracle economy" has been in uninterrupted recession since at least 1990.

This author bases his arguments on "because I say so" reasoning extrapolated from his being Indian himself and any notion that there might just be a little bias in his thinking is squashed by his playing of the Race Card early in the book. Then, after selecting quotes only from sources supporting his outrageous claims, he feels free to prognosticate about India's future without the need for any verifiable facts to support his thesis.

Most entertaining was his claim that India will emerge as a military power. India has not put a credible army in the field for a couple thousand years. Since independence, they have either lost every conflict in which they were a participant (like against China) or fought to a bloody stalemate (like Pakistan). Perhaps the author longs for the days of the Bengal Lancers but modern conflicts do not typically involve bayonet charges or mounted cavalry actions.

This book has interesting ideas for serious study but it would be foolish to consider this the last word on the future of India as an economic force. The author dismisses or ignores far too many important issues for that. Example: what about the near nuclear conflict between India and Pakistan just a few years ago? If such a confligration were to take place, in what kind of shape would that leave India's infrastructure and economic viability? It is too real a possibility to be ignored but the author manages to do just that. What about the AIDS epidemic rampaging through India and the rest of South Asia? That disease has decimated a generation of leadership in Africa and it has just begun its grisly process in India? Further, supposing the author's predictions do come to pass...who, then, will be able to purchase all these products and services coming from India? Not an impoverished and unemployed America, to be sure.

Buy this book just to say you've done it. It's not worth much more than a casual read.

5 out of 5 stars Delaundering the laundry list.......2006-03-06

Just seen someone here has recommended Clyde Prestowitz for a serious analysis rather than Rising Elephant's "laundry list". Well, Mr. Prestowitz has just endorsed the principal thesis of Rising Elephant: India and China both matter, but India will matter more.
According to a news report in the Press Trust of India at the end of February "China may be the destination for short-term investors, but if you are in it for the long haul you might want to bet on India, according to ... Clyde Prestowitz."

5 out of 5 stars If you thought this book was only about outsourcing, think again.......2006-03-03

As George Bush visits India and recognizes it as a nuclear power (did he really have a choice ?) - what amazes me is that he has backed off any comments about either outsourcing or solving Kashmir.
I find this analysis from Rising Elephant absolutely stunning:

"Still, as India emerges from behind its externally-cast veil of Gandhian nonviolence and general good-neighbourliness (with the obvious exception of Pakistan), it is also important to take close note of the fact that the Elephant has never hesitated to act in its own interests. At present, a strategic alliance with America is a clear priority. The speed of progress of this alliance is breathtaking and its implications profound, once again in terms of complicating and limiting space for a single issue like white-collar job relocation."
"Indeed, few serious observers doubt any longer that India is a fast-rising world power, and its growing presence will have to be accepted. This process has already begun."

            Book Description

Jon Marañón offers a gripping first person account of nature and persons in conflict and the difficulties of meshing human existence into the once pristine rain forests of Costa Rica.

The Gringo's Hawk promotes reader awareness of the natural environment, wildlife, ecosystems, and socio-culture of this remote area. Ecology and spirituality are intertwined as he describes his journey in a mix of naturalist and lyrical prose that, along with humor and introspection, mark the style of The Gringo's Hawk.

            5 out of 5 stars One Man's Eco-journey in Costa Rica.......2006-08-27

This is a true story, as true as one can be about one's own life, of an American who, in his early 20's left the capitalistic society of America to seek a life more in tune with the environment. As a seeker, he made many mistakes along the way, but has found wisdom and harmony and offers it to those who choose to visit La Cusinga Lodge. He fought to conserve and preserve paradise and has definitely made a difference in Costa Rica. He has also found a way to make science more humane. Thank you, John, for your wonderful and honest accounting of your life's journey so far! Read this if you have ever wondered what one person can do to change the world.

            5 out of 5 stars A Gripping Personal Read.......2006-06-21

I live near the area in Costa Rica where the author writes about in Gringo's Hawk. We are inclined to think that the really good stuff in life has to come from overseas, certainly not from the same neighborhood where we live. So as I started reading the book, I was expecting an amateur presentation of life in the rapidly changing tropics of Costa Rica... and then I found myself reading the last page of the book and looking for more.

I have struggled a bit with my reaction to this book since I am truly biased by living here. I share, to a profound level, the concerns for the cultural, social, and ecological upheavals that we are witnessing all around us here, and that this book so capably catalogues. I regret the fact that I arrived to Costa Rica after the big trees were cut down, and I envy the author the fact that he at least got to see it. I think though that it isn't so much being a resident of this small and special part of the globe. "Morita" Costa Rica, is a microcosm of the much bigger picture. The book is a "must read" for all residents of Planet Earth.

By the way, a similar read by another local author is "Monkey's Are Made of Chocolate" by Jack Ewing, also available here at Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book, great live... loved it!.......2003-12-23

Even after reading so many books about costa rica and people that have gone to the tropics and try to make it, I read the Gringo's Hawk... and it is a great book. It is one of those books that flows and makes you want to know what is coming next. A great writer, simple and to the point. It brings you in and makes you part of the story.

I most say that it is a most for all of us who have travel the world, or for those that want to know about the tropics and the struggles with life.

            GREAT BOOK!

5 out of 5 stars A compelling, highly recommended autobiographical story.......2002-02-11

The Gringo's Hawk is the personal memoir of a varied and remarkable life. Jon Maranon was an idealistic American who became a landowner on the southwest coast of Costa Rica. Maranon found himself confronted with one crisis after another ranging from chicken hawks, to termites, to adjudicating peasant disputes, to conflicts with other landlords who felt Maranon paid his peasants too much. He fervently battled with Costa Rican government to stop the slow degradation of the environment, and worked with scientists to understand more about the migration patterns of whales. The Gringo's Hawk is the compelling, highly recommended autobiographical story of a unique, candidly presented, and singularly fascinating life.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite kind of book!.......2001-12-21

I have piles of books that I intend to read someday. I thus have no time for slow moving books. Gringo's Hawk is a delightful and fast moving story that drew me in and allowed me to feel like I was participating in the story. I laughed. I cried. I shook with anticipation. This story is a joy to read.

Now, where can I find another as good?
