Book Description
Marine Sniper is not only one of the most astonishing true stories to emerge from the Vietnam War, it has become a classic of military nonfiction, inspiring a sequel, Silent Warrior: The Marine Sniper's Vietnam Story Continues.
There have been many Marines. There have been many marksmen. But there has only been one Sergeant Carlos Hathcock. A legend in the Marine ranks, Hathcock stalked the Viet Cong behind enemy lines-on their own ground. And each time he emerged from the jungle having done his duty. His record is one of the finest in military history, with 93 confirmed kills.
This is the story of a simple man who endured incredible dangers and hardships for his country and his Corps. These are the missions that have made Carlos Hathcock a legend in the brotherhood of Marines.
"Highly readable." (Publishers Weekly)

Courageous Type of Warfare.......2007-09-24
This book is about Carlos Hathcock, the distinguished Marine Corp sniper of the Vietnam War. Honored in this country, with 93 confirmed enemy kills and having gained notoriety among the enemy as White Feather, because that is what adorned his cap and gained him a bounty on his head. The book is a good portrayal of what it takes to become proficient at sniper warfare, along with its effectiveness in warfare. Although often considered a cowardly method of warfare, the reader will pick up that Hathcock's time in the bush stalking the enemy's position days on end to obtain the perfect shot, but not too close to make escape impossible is a personally courageous act. The book highlights one incident where Hathcock goes one on one with an equally savvy Viet Cong sniper and another four-day stalk within a Viet Cong base camp to bring down a North Vietnamese General. The author's portrayal of Hathcock's banter is not all that humble when discussing himself, but this man can also walk the walk. It is a little sad about the adjustment problems Hathcock has to civilian life. Most civilian jobs pale in comparison to hunting and being hunted by humans., The book is a fast light read with some heart pounding entertainment. The book could have used some more sniper accounts.
Very pleased with product. Great book.......2007-09-13

Marine Sniper: 93 Confirmed Kills.......2007-06-25
Very good book...I was in Vietnam in May of '67 till May of '68....This book is very very real !!!War is a varied mixture of total boredom and the mundane to the highest Adrenalin rush one can ever imagine !!!Many things described in this book present that...
Taste of What War is Like.......2007-06-08
This book gives you an idea of what it is like to be the hunter as well as the huntee. Brings home the brutality of war.
Must Read.......2007-03-08
Henderson does a great job telling Hathcock's story. I couldn't put this book down. If Vietnam interests you, you have to read this book. Also, Silent Warrior the sequal is great to read as well because it tells a lot of the stories in this book more in depth because Henderson went and found out more info about certain battles. even going as far as interviewing NVA soldiers that were stalked by Hatchcock. One of my favorite books ever. Like the Military Channel? read this book!!!!!!!!

Lee's Last Retreat: The Flight to Appomattox
ASIN: 0807825689
Release Date: 2000-08-30 |
Book Description
Although Appomattox Court House is one of the most symbolically charged places in America, it was an ordinary tobacco-growing village both before and after an accident of fate brought the armies of Lee and Grant together there. It is that Appomattox--the typical small Confederate town--that William Marvel portrays in this deeply researched, compelling new study. He tells the story of the Civil War from the perspective of one of the conflict's most famous sites.
The village sprang into existence just as Texas became a state and reached its peak not long before Lee and Grant met there. The postwar decline of the village mirrored that of the rural South as a whole, and Appomattox served as the focal point for Lost Cause myth-making.
Marvel draws on original documents, diaries, and letters composed as the war unfolded to produce a clear and credible portrait of everyday life in this town and the galvanizing events of April 1865. He also scrutinizes Appomattox the national symbol, exposing many of the cherished myths surrounding the surrender there. In particular, he challenges the fable that enemies who had battled each other for four years suddenly laid down their arms and welcomed each other as brothers.

An Appomattox Genealogist's Dream.......2002-06-07
From the point of view of a family historian, Marvel's book fills a hole in the genre of social history books for Appomattox. The gems in this book consist of a lengthy source for chapter notes, family names like Ferguson, Flood, and McClean, and simplified maps showing the layout of Appomattox CH, as well as Clover Hill, and the dilineation of Buckingham and Appomattox Counties. The latter can be a source of much confusion in census records after 1845.
Marvel tells a story of typhoid epidemics, social mannerisms, and politics that will tickle the soul of the wanna-be gossip, as well as the reader who relishes a good story. The attention to detail goes beyond the call of duty, and is much appreciated by this reader. This is the first book I've seen that mentions Robert Kyle's heavy artillery division in any detail.
If you're not familiar with the names and families through genealogical research, you'll know them by the time you finish the book. Excellent reading, excellent resource.
Good read.......2002-04-13
Overall this book is a good read on a unwritten about subject. The events during Lee's surrender have been written many times, but not many have discussed how Appomattox was founded, who lived there, etc. Marvel does this, although the first couple chapters are a bit slow. However, during the war years, the text picks up and is more lively. Marvel's description of the differing personalties in Appomattox's history is very good too. The section on the post-war years did not go into as much depth however. Nor did Marvel go into much depth on the death of Appomattox or its rebirth as a national park. I have been to the park and this book gave me a better understanding of some of the things I saw. Overall, the book is very good, but Marvel did miss a couple things.
Great Book.......2001-06-01
Marvel's "A Place Called Appomattox" is a great book. Overall it provides an insightful and intriguing portrait of the life and death of Appomattox Court House, VA. However there are some minor problems with the book that prevent it from being an outstanding book.
First off, the book takes several chapters to really get rolling. The first three chapters of the book consist entirely of narrative by Marvel and no quotations from letters, diaries, newspapers or government documents. This lack of visceral primary sources keeps the book from involving the reader in the narrative and may bore readers who aren't committed for the finish.
However, once the war does start, the books becomes much more active. There are active quotations from individuals and the narrative becomes much more involved with the individuals of the town. I really enjoyed this part of the book.
Overall this is a great book. However, Marvel doesn't go as far into the death throes of Appomattox or its restoration during the 1930's and 1940's as I would have liked. Marvel also doesn't really do as thorough a job as I would have liked to prove his statement in his preface that Appomattox was a typical Southern town. Other than this, it was an interesting book.

Flow Dreaming a Radical New Technique for Manifesting Anything you Want.......2007-10-10
Is a nice 'easy' read book, the real bonus was an unexpected CD sitting secretly at the back cover. The CD is an easy to listening tool. The authoress's voice smooth, west coast and easy on the ear, especially 'absorbant' for actually daydreaming or meditating.
This material needs to be 'seen' in perspective with other material of the same genre. I would imagine many readers are 'searching' and investigating material and this subject. This is another writer sharing their experience. A visit to the Radio/Publishing web site also gives more perspective, this book is a slick, commercial product with plenty of 'professional' glitz.
Create a Beautiful Life.......2007-06-30
I discovered Summer McStravick and Flowdreaming on Hayhouse Radio and that discovery has been another stepping stone for a better life. If you treasure your inner world as well as the outer one, you'll manifest good things with flowdreaming. It gets you started with guided daydreams that will turn your life around.
Visualization rather than Meditation.......2007-05-08
I first heard the author on Hay House Radio and had to listen with an open mind. Her enthusiasm could be construed as "out there" but I would love nothing better than to have that energy swirling around me 24/7. I have also called in to speak with her and have found her to be very warm, caring and so helpful in my own path. When I am having a really bad day and think that life isn't a great or safe place, I turn on my ipod, listen to her and then feel like I have my power back and life is really good. Her book is simply written and easy to follow. The accompanying CD shows you how to bring yourself in to the flow in different areas of your life; money, relationships, etc. When I am in the flow, everything works be it financial, health it works.
This is an active technique........2007-04-11
Summer has an energetic emotional technique that brings about what you desire. The Hicks thinking is the same as Summer's. Summer just helps people get that vibrational thinking going and able to sustain it for a short period of time, which is required for the universe to respond to us. We have such negative thinking playing in the background constantly because of our society and the way most of use were brought up. Summer allows us to actively dream and focus on the things that we want. Since I have started flowdreaming many things are happening and many more are on their way. I know it, I have experienced it and I have faith that these good and wonderful things are coming to anyone who has the ability to energetically flow with Summer or come up with their own energetic dreaming and focusing.

Flowdreaming is a magnificent tool!.......2007-03-26
I bought this and, shortly thereafter, all of the other cd's she has put out! I have to say that I like the tempo of the recordings that accompany this book best, but they are all very helpful for when I am diligently working to create something in my life or just barely keepin 'my head above the water' to be happy or positive.
I have other training in meditation, visualization and the such, but flowdreaming has been a magnificent addition to my toolbox for creating my life.
You may have heard the quote "Life is not about finding yourself, it's about creating yourself!" and Summer McStravick's work has helped me in so many ways, on so many levels to do that. Let me also let you know that this is not a series of MEDITATIONS, at least that is not how I experience these recordings. She guides you to connect with YOUR FLOW and helps you to bring up the FEELINGS that are KEY TO MANIFESTING what you want. There is nothing else I have experienced which helps me to create the feelings as if I already have what I'm creating. Many teachers say this is what you should do, but she helps you to do it!
The concept she presents here is simple and easy to follow. But just like with anything, timing is EVERYTHING!! For the few who bought this and didn't like it, it's likely it just wasn't a good time for them to be able to receive the information. Sometimes, I don't resonate with it either! But I have experienced numerous times that I do and at the very least, my spirits are uplifted by it. Let alone the things that are magnetized and drawn into my life because of it!
I appreciate the amazing work Summer McStravick is doing, which has lead me to also listen to her podcasts from her show on Hay House Radio's website. Her technique has given me a quick and easy way to tap into 'my flow' and I use that to stay as authentic as possible in my life. I have gotten my mom, my sister and at least five of my friends creating in their lives by flowdreaming and with great success! I hope more and more people try it, because the likelihood you'll love it and share it with your friends and families is incredibly high!
ENJOY! :)
Book Description
In a book written while he was president of Czechoslovakia, Vaclav Havel combines the same powerful eloquence, moral passion, and abiding wisdom that informed his writing as a dissident and playwright, with a candor unprecedented from one with the broad perspective and infinite responsibility of governing a country.
Havel, now president of the Czech Republic, addresses the legacy of Communism as the euphoria of the Velvet Revolution gives way to a more problematic reality. Yet even as he grapples with the challenges of political change, he affirms his belief in a politics motivated by moral responsibility; in an economy tempered by compassion; and in the central roles of art and culture in the transformation of society. Summer Meditations is not only a timely and necessary testament of events in Eastern Europe but a profound reflection upon the nature and practice of politics and a stirring call for morality, civility, and openness in public life throughout the world.
Customer Reviews:
One of my favorite books.......2005-06-17
I first picked up this book before I headed off to college 8 years ago and couldn't put it down. I now pick it up every so often to read through all the pages I underlined and highlighted for brillant thoughts. It's an inspirational book. I reference it as a must read to all the students I mentor now who have interests in government.
Tremendous!.......1999-07-01
How many politicians take the time to sit back and think about their career, the world around them, and the state of affairs in general? How many take the time to then write what they are thinking and share it with the world? Few; almost none. That is what makes Havel so special and this book so inspiring. By the time you read it many of the arguments he makes for and against certain laws or policies may be largely moot. But that isn't the point! The point of the book is to look at Havel's sense of morality and his philosophy of politics and government. Every politician should be required to read this book!
A breath of fresh air in a world of political smog and smut........1999-02-07
Havel's heart is placed on each page. His masterful ability to break down complex issues with his personal moral code inspires hope and resolve in the reader. A true world leader and example in a world of fallen leaders and stained examples. The reader leaves the book a better person. And in the final analysis, isn't this what it is all about? Havel thinks so.
Book Description
A season of both growth and of stillness, of hard work in the garden and of relaxing in the cool of the mountains, summer is a celebratory time. Every day matters, says summer. Look around you. Life is starting up again after a long winter and spring, and we find ourselves in a world filled with creatures and plants and shimmers of heat on the subway, with backyard cookouts and ice cream trucks jingling through the neighborhood.
This collection of powerful, stirring pieces from a wealth of sources--ranging from poems composed in eighth-century China to letters from a pioneer woman in the American West, from the Declaration of Independence to Ray Bradbury's musings on childhood summers--invites us all to fully experience the rich and bountiful spirituality of summer.

A book of touching simplicity and spiritual intimacy........2000-05-23
Sometimes in this book I find myself reading about qualities I would rather not admit I relate to. I find myself transfixed by the story, thinking, "How's Jesus gonna affect this one?"
Invariably, after reading a meditation, I have felt powerfully touched by Jesus' love and compassion in ways that often surprise me and make me hungry for the next story. I feel closer to God, myself and others and it stays with me for hours.
Reading about Mary Magdalene, Peter, and the others - they seem so human, they could be your neighbor, your family or coworker - or even you or me.
The ONLY thing I don't like about this book is the title - which I feel is awkward and doesn't capture the essence of this book and I worry that it won't reach as many people as it could with a cleaner title. If I were to have named it, I think I would have chosen something like, "New Light on Jesus." The title aside, this is a great book - spiritually powerful as it is simple and well written!

Touch My Heart in Summer.......2002-01-19
"Touch My Heart in Summer" was such a wonderful devotional for me. I found myself taking a trip away from the daily cares of my life, and escaping to another place where I could rest and meditate on Jesus. This devotional reminded me that spending time to meditate on the written word is so essential in the life of a christian.
Touch My Heart In Summer.......2000-07-08
I had the opportunity to read this book at a women's retreat. I found it to be soothing, uplifting and beautiful. The meditations are short and easy to read, leaving the reader to search her own thoughts & emotions. It is a wonderful book to own and give to all the women in your life.
Beautiful pages to meditate on for the whole summer.......1998-07-25
This is the most beautiful book-aesthetically and spiritually that I have had to use during my quiet times in a long time. Each page is like a new view of the world.

Arguments about the environment in the history of Western thought accompany a guide to developing an approach to environmental thought based on ecological attunement in this analysis of the fundamental concepts that ground environmental policy.
