The author of Iron and Silk looks back to his tortured youth with self-deprecating humor and wistful fondness. The oldest child in a middle-class household in Connecticut, the son of a piano teacher and a social worker, by age six the author was an eccentric with enormous aspirations - none of them ever fulfilled - who stood out not only from his more conventional parents and brother and sister but from everyone else in his suburban neighborhood. A hilarious memoir in the tradition of Russell Baker's Growing Up.
Book Description
From the author of Iron & Silk comes a charming and frequently uproarious account of an American adolescence in the age of Bruce Lee, Ozzy Osborne, and Kung Fu. As Salzman recalls coming of age with one foot in Connecticut and the other in China (he wanted to become a wandering Zen monk), he tells the story of a teenager trying to attain enlightenment before he's learned to drive.

entertaining read.......2007-09-14
My mother sent me this book for my birthday and I enjoyed every page. Very entertaining, both funny and serious, as well as making some great observations about growing up in Ridgefield, CT. I also grew up in Ridgefield in the 70s and the book is a very accurate description of life in Ridgefield back then. I amazed at how much he was able to remember, I'm not able to remember anywhere near that many details about my own childhood.
My favorite martial arts related autobiography!!!.......2005-09-06
I have read almost every martial arts autobiography that has been published in the English language. I have put together quite a collection of them from all over the world. As proof, check out my book Martial Arts Biographies-An Annotated Bibliography (ISBN:0595348610). So I think I know a little about the subject of martial arts autobiographies. I liked Salzman's first book Iron & Silk. It is a classic to be sure. But I absolutly loved Lost In Place. It is the funniest of any martial arts biography that I have read. It is also very serious in other parts of the book. The story is great, and I recommend it very highly! Beyond being my favorite martial arts autobiography,I would put it in my top five favorite books of all. BUY IT, READ IT, AND LAUGH YOUR BUTT OFF!!!!
Laughed out loud.......2005-01-03
Memoir of Mark Salzman's adolescent years in Connecticut. Outrageously funny in spots, touching in others, and interesting throughout. The author's description of Sensei O'Keefe and the stories surrounding the Kung Fu Dojo are riotous. Ed, his eternally pessimistic father, adds another element of humor to the story. The novel describes an eccentric teenager's failed attempts to "change myself into something I'm not. The story of my life." He obsessively pursues first Kung Fu to become a fearless warior, then years of cello training to achieve a dream of becoming a concert celloist, and majors in Chinese at Yale because "it was the one subject I had a head start in and could therefore look smarter than I really was." The book is a good reflection back on the eccentricities of adolescence with a profound message offered in the end.
This book is an absolute gem........2004-08-08
This book is an absolute gem. How often do you come across a martial arts book that is not just well written but genuinely, heartbreakingly funny? Mr. Salzman has already shown us he can write in his first book, Iron and Silk, the story of his two years spent in China teaching English and practicing wushu with Pan Qing Fu. The book was later made into a critically acclaimed film of the same name. In Lost in Place, the author lets us in on the secrets of his adolescence. Anyone who has ever been seized by the desire to shave his head, dye his pyjamas purple, and abandon the fast food of suburbia for the wandering life of a Zen monk will love this book.
We follow Salzman through the perils of teenage life, goofing off at school and then frantically trying to make up, agonizing about dates, buying his first car, choosing what to study at university, and in general giving his long suffering family a hard time, and all of this while struggling between Eastern and Western worldviews. We meet some strange people he encountered in his attempts to become a Bruce Lee clone, such as the ominous Sensei O'Keefe, the rowdy and foul-mouthed master of the Chinese Boxing Institute, with his dreaded brainwave, "cemetery sparring". Apart from the stories of Salzman's various martial art experiences, some hilarious and some appalling, there are some well drawn scenes of his interaction with his father, who is described as a good natured pessimist, probably not a bad thing to be for someone forced to compete with the glamorous Bruce Lee for his son's affections. There is a lovely scene of his father listening to an outpouring of his son's existential angst. We get a picture of a gentle, mature man with a nice sense of irony. He must be proud now of how his son has turned out. Salzman has written four critically acclaimed novels, one of which was a finalist for the LA Times Book Review Award. He is a great storyteller and this book will not let you down.
Boy, can I relate.......2004-05-13
In addition to a memoir, this book is an effective mediation on what it really means to master something. We see Salzman try to become a martial artist, and, later, a cello soloist, the first with considerable dedication, the latter with a certain amount of natural ability; in both cases, though, he eventually realizes that he just doesn't have what it takes to really master the discipline. In the case of Kung Fu, after three years of study, he encounters a drugged-out man who threatens him with a lead pipe. In spite of the fact that he could probably easily disarm him, Salzman's nerve fails him and he hands over his wallet. Later, with the cello, he gives up after seeing one performance by legendary cellist Yo Yo Ma. He ends up finding his greatest success as a mailboy for an attorney.
One thing that struck me as interesting is that (I read somewhere) 'Kung Fu' refers to any human skill in Chinese (making a 'Kung Fu skills' redundant, like ATM machine); it's sort of a metaphor, then, for everything Salzman pursues.
Another thing to note is that in spite of the subtitle 'growing up absurd in suburbia,' Salzman's martial arts training is astonishingly difficult. His teacher is a borderline psychopath who curses and hits his students (at one point he throws Mark against a trophy display case), and the school regularly practices full-range sparring with no protective equipment except for a cup, which is about as hardcore, comparatively, as playing the cello with the skin stripped off your fingers.

A very good text for understanding Low Intensity Conflict........2004-10-10
This is an important read for those interested in understanding current world disorder, and the future of Low Intensity Conflict. An examination of the American experience in the Vietnam War, probably provides some of the best examples of the criteria necessary for success in Low Intensity Conflict, including but not limited to guerilla war and insurgency. Andradé identifies in Ashes to Ashes the criteria as articulation, accessibility, and accountability.
Articulation of specific goals and objectives must be clear and reasonable. Accessibility of the officials to the general populace must be systematic. The accountability of every member in an operation must be held to the highest standards. Finally, the combination of the above must achieve a synergistic effect; whereby, the ability to accomplish the mission is accompanied with the will and desire to sustain the effort for whatever duration it takes!
The Phoenix program was a response to a war whose objectives were never clearly stated, but were implemented incrementally, and largely ignored such basic elements as public support, a willing and competent host, and consideration of past experiences evaluated and analyzed by its intelligence community. The Vietnam syndrome is not dissimilar from either the Israeli/Palestine conflict, or current US/Iraqi war. The ultimate question is whether a democratic society burdened with occupation of another unwilling people can, despite its best intentions, sustain the rule of law long enough to achieve the peace.
A fair shake for the Phoenix program.......2003-08-20
If you want to read a fair and accurrate description of Vietnam's Phoenix Program and its scope and activities then this is the book for you.
Well researched and well written it is one of the few books that portrays Phoenix for what it was, a systematic program to counter the VC insurgency. Most books on Phoenix are content to waste space plathering on about mythic conspiracies by the CIA to assassinate and torture every living being within the country of Vietnam. Andrade's book tears away these myths and explains in full detail the situations leading up to the creation of Phoenix, its inception and planned scope, how it operated, and attempts to determine its overall effectiveness on the course of the war.
If you are looking for an anti-US government, or CIA/military/Presidential/feemasons/illuminati conspiracy book then don't even bother. But if you are genuinely interested in knowing more about the truth of the Phoenix program, this book is a MUST. An additional item is that in reading this book you may be able to deduce for yourself how such a program could help our current efforts in Iraq.
An excellent book for a factual account of Project Phoenix.......2001-04-18
A fine work that accurately and truthfully talks about and displays the truth about the Phoenix Program. The author obviously spent a great deal of time on thorough research with operatives who were actually there. This book shows Phoenix for what it was, an effective grass roots campaign to root out and capture the Viet Cong Infrastructure.
Most other books I've seen on the subject have largely been the delusional fantasies of wannabes who were never there. The types who clog VA centers claiming PTSD for top secret commando missions they were never on. This book only interviewed real Phoenix operatives.
Hats off to Mr. Andrade. Job well done.

Compelling, Vital & A Great Read.......2003-01-19
I started reading this book because a friend insisted. I finished it because I couldn't put it down. I laughed, became mesmerized, got angry and celebrated with tears of joy Phil Harvey's triumph in court. George Washington may have been the father of this country but it is courageous individuals who are committed to the Constitution even when that commitment gets difficult or even unpopular, like Phil Harvey, that keep it great. It's worth reading this book just to be reminded of that fact.
Anyone who is looking for a compelling tale with heroes and villains, a superb overview of First Amendment issues and/or just a great and easy read should read this book. Anyone who thinks the freedom we enjoy is precious should read this immediately and then send a Thank You to Phil Harvey.
Intriguing, insightful, and imperative!.......2002-05-27
As timely as tonight's evening news. An examination of what Ashcroft-type first amendment views can do to the individual, free enterprise and the very fabric of society. Harvey's insightful views on everything from organized religion, big government, pornography, to the corporate soul will interest a diverse group of readers including political pundits, free speech advocates, students and corporate players.
This is not some passive academic examination. Instead it is the first hand account of an entrepreneur whose livelihood, beliefs and very right to freedom are challenged by an attempted modern day witch burning.
All the read of a super thriller. Plus the reality of the governments ability to unleash their unlimited resources and threats of long prison sentences with the scantiest evidence. Few of us have the spiritual, physical, fiscal, emotional or intellectual stamina to stand up for what is right under those conditions. Harvey did it and won...making him an unlikely American folk hero.
An extraordinary insight into the possible American landscape when we surrender our liberty to self-appointed/government appointed (and anointed) arbiters of the public taste.
Intriguing, insightful, and imperative!
A story which needed telling.......2002-05-22
This is an important book. Written not by a reporter or bystander but by the person who had most to lose, who risked jail and financial ruin to defy the government's harsh and illegal attempt to destroy his small business. Philip Harvey's story is a terrifying one in many ways, a particularly appropriate reminder, especially now, that our first amendment rights are under clear and constant danger when big government does not approve of our actions, legal though they may be.
We learn that while it would have been easier to capitulate, Harvey refused to accept that alternative, and the resulting court battles are described with passion and insight.
Read this book. You will be by turns outraged and inspired. Phil Harvey has done us all a service with this fascinating story of right vs might.
Hobnails In Your Bedroom.......2002-02-06
What the federal government did to Phil Harvey and his company Adam & Eve in 1986 was scary...chilling...intimidating. And that's exactly what it was meant to be.
The feds wanted to put the sexual genie back in the bottle, and they were perfectly willing to use strong-arm tactics to achieve their aim. Adam & Eve, located in their backyard, Carrboro, North Carolina, was a seemingly perfect target, a thriving mail-order seller of condoms, sex toys and videos. So on May 29, 1986, 37 agents of the United States Department, ignoring local law enforcement, raided the office and warehouse of Adam & Eve.
Headed by Edwin Meese, Ronald Reagan's attorney general, the Justice Department believed it was its duty to prevent Adam & Eve from providing products that enhance and add enjoyment to sexuality.
It took eight years of fighting and spending by Phil Harvey and his legal team to fend off the federal pinch.
The Government Vs. Erotica is that story. A combination horror story, thriller and memoir, it deserves to be read far and wide because it's a very clear tale about the abuse of power in the name of morality. It's a story about what happens when the self-righteous gain control of the institutions of authority and use them for to play political hardball. It's about fundamentalist fanaticism perpetrated in the name of goodness.
Know a lawyer, journalist, legislator, teacher or minister? Or someone studying to be one of those things. Give them this book. It's about how government should not act. And it's about the toll it takes on people's lives to live through wrong-headed intimidation tactics.
The good guys win.......2001-08-24
What the Department of Justice did as recounted in this book can happen again, and is perhaps even more likely with the ultra-conservative Ashcroft at the reigns. This book relates how a religiously motivated anti-sex crusade, funded with government money, trampled on the Constitutional rights of U.S. citizens with total disregard. They were on a religious crusade to stamp out erotica, and the Constitution was simply something to be ignored or worked around. Harvey is a pro-sex family man without any of the seediness of the First Ammendment figures such as Flynt. He is the good guy in this story. The Publisher's Weekly review, calling Harvey's defense of adult material as unconvincing, simply refelects their own anti-sex bias. Harvey's arguments are cogent and intelligent and make sense to anyone who does not equate sex with morbid shame.

Book Description
The facts are shocking. Every day on Earth, approximately 75 plant and animal species are driven into biological extinction. Forests are being destroyed and the wealth of our planet's resources are being depleted at an astounding rate. The planet as we know it is facing a barren future unless the human race can halt the spread of a cancer that holds Earth's fate in the balance. To fight back, we must come to terms with several harsh realities: 1. Human beings must realize that our destiny is inextricably linked to the preservation of other species and environmental resources. 2. We must adjust our perspective to view the human race as an equal, interdependent part of the biosphere, not as ruler over it. 3. We must temper our seemingly unquenchable thirst for progress with a more holistic vision for the long-term survival of our species. In short, we must confront the source of this deadly "earth cancer"--ourselves. Earth Cancer sounds a wake-up call for humanity. Weigel contends that humans have constructed a self-defeating "Berlin Wall" between themselves and other species. This wall is built from arrogance toward the environment as symbolized by the systematic destruction of habitats and the reckless generation of waste. As our blind pursuit of economic development and expansion continues to prevail over ecological concern, the wall grows larger and the devastation more prolific. Weigel explains that humans face a moral and ethical imperative to stem this tide before it is too late. Because the fate of so many species is dependent upon the decisions we make, the ideal of interdependence with all other members of the biosphere must be embraced. This important book provides new insight about our attitude toward the environment and suggests that a change in our priorities could mean a change in our destiny.

Book Description
Now in paperback
âIn the spring of 1995, the condition I seem to have been waiting for all my life finally struck me.â So begins Jane Lazarre’s account of her transforming battle with breast cancer. Following in the tradition of her critically acclaimed literary memoirs, Lazarre brilliantly interweaves her struggle with a life-threatening illness and other stories of recent and past lossesâmost notably, coming to terms with having grown up a motherless child after losing her mother to breast cancer when Jane was a small child. Lazarre draws her strength from her faith in the power of storytelling to make bearable the seemingly unbearable. Her bravely and beautifully written account of grief, illness, and recovery is at the last a celebration of the redemptive possibilities of the creative spirit.
SIDEBAR:
âJane Lazarre combines Adrienne Rich’s brazen approach to plumbing the psyche through language with a certain belief in personal narrative; her intense anxious attachment to her two sons; and her struggle to write.ââMamm magazine
âReading Lazarre’s latest is like spending time with a friend. It’s a story bound to move anyone who has ever experienced love or loss.ââPublishers Weekly
âWet Earth and Dreams is a beautiful, engrossing, enormously moving book. It stirred me to the depths.ââJudith Rossner
â[Lazarre’s] best and most powerful work.ââPhillip Lopate, author of Portrait of My Body and The Art of the Personal Essay
Customer Reviews:
Grief and joy interwoven in marvelous prose........1999-02-11
More than just a story of surmounting physical illness (in Lazarre's case, breast cancer), this is a story in which physical survival becomes a metaphor for emotional healing. One of the book's great pleasures is its structure, for rather than tell her story from beginning to end, Lazarre explores how different memories echo and amplify one another: the bewildered pain of a young daughter at her mother's cancer death, the adult woman's successive responses to the loss of a therapist and a brother-in-law, and finally her own breast cancer diagnosis. While the subject matter may sound grim, the language and above all the author's quiet determination to honor her memories as part of her own living future left me with not only a sense of admiration for Lazarre's courage, but a heightened confidence in my own ability to make meaning in the aftermath of the deepest personal losses. Finally, this is an incredibly moving story of mothers and daughters, and of the ways in which a daughter's longing can, ironically, estrange her from the woman she fears to resemble. The clarity of the images and graceful simplicity of the prose are poetic without any of the fussiness of some works that bill themselves as prose poetry. Read it slowly. Reread.

..........2002-03-27
"This illuminating, real-life story is not so much about Cobble's struggle with death, nor is it about the twists and turns of dying. Instead, it's about her journey toward joyful living in the shadow of a life-threatening cancer. With her thoughts and insights recorded with reverence and grace, the book is a reminder that hope is ever viable no matter the circumstance."
from Christian Retailing.......2002-03-27
"This moving memoir of physician Nancy Cobble, who, after being diagnosed with terminal cancer, offers to others "the gifts of what God has shown me about living, dying, and moving forward." She set out to write a book about what it is like to die and ended up writing a book about what it means to truly live. This book is an inspiration to those facing terminal illness and anyone who wants to live life more fully."

This is a book I could totally relate to!!.......1999-01-08
I lost my Dad to this dreaded disease in September, so this was a book I just could not put down!! It helped me to understand what he must have been feeling and thinking, especially about leaving his loved ones behind. Also, throughout the entire book, I kept thinking about a friend who lost his wife at the same age....I gave the book to him to read, although I think it will take him alot longer to read!!
Truly remarkable; poignant lessons about life and death.......1998-11-28
An excellent account of one woman's struggles and triumphs over cancer. Nancy Cobble's story will make you appreciate the gift of life and how we should all live it, as well as describing the emotion of facing one's own mortality. Joy Sawyer does an outstanding job of organizing the material and putting Nancy's thoughts into book form. A wonderful book for anyone -- top notch!

The objective of this study was to reanalyze two well-conducted, peer-reviewed epidemiology studies in Iowa and Ontario that reported an increased risk of bladder cancer associated with chlorinated drinking water and trihalomethanes (THMs). Is the risk of cancer from DBPs in chlorinated drinking water greater or less than currently thought? Can specific cancer-causing compounds be identified? Can DBP formation be accurately predicted? This study updates our knowledge of the health effects of disinfection by products in chlorinated drinking water. Includes appendices on CD.

Book Description
The past few years have seen a rapidly developing interest in myeloma. There has been an explosion of new knowledge in the biology of the myeloma cell, and the first indications have appeared that some of this knowledge could be clinically applied. Newly accepted and successful treatments are
now changing established practice in the therapy of myeloma. This book provides a major, comprehensive text on multiple myeloma. It covers pathophysiology, clincial features, complications and management, and is an authoritative guide to clinical practice, with a strong emphasis on the fundamental
biology which underlies the disease.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Myeloma Reference source.......2000-03-22
Myeloma is a very difficult and deadly sickness with no cure. Many people are misdiagnosed for years. This Handbook expands on what the IMF says in their booklet so extensively that I recommend it highly as an educational even though technical tool. Great job by Oxford Press and my only regret is that there is no simple way to update it more often. So far there were 1995 and 1998 editions, I look forward to the 2001 edition which could mean an overhaul of the themes. A few non focus subjects on the sickness could be eliminated.

Book Description
The red soils of China are highly weathered, inherently infertile and very susceptible to erosion. However, they represent China's last available soil resource that could be brought into agricultural production, a fact that assumes great importance in view of China's huge and still-increasing population. These soils are typical of similar red soils that occur throughout tropical and sub-tropical South America, Africa and south east Asia, so that if the red soils of China could be successfully utilized then this would have wider implications for agriculture in other countries. Previous attempts to cultivate Chinese red soils have met with little success and it has become apparent that they cannot sustain arable cropping systems without the most careful management.
This book describes recent research outlining the physical, chemical and mineralogical nature of the soils, the various constraints that combine to inhibit their practical use, and the traditional and novel approaches that may be used to overcome these constraints. Building upon previous work and using examples from other countries, the book illustrates these approaches, shows appropriate land uses for the red soils of China and how the fertility of the soils evolves with time under these land uses. Whether these technical and scientific advances will be taken up by the Chinese farmer will depend to a large extent on the prevailing socio-economic conditions.
